Yes! I thrift clothes for fabric for crafting. Never yet found a Shein item I wanted to buy - the fabric is horrible. It's getting harder to find anything worthwhile.
She is right, its not the people who can't afford more expensive clothes that isnt the problem, its the influencers that CAN afford to shop sustainable, but they choose the quantity for the views and shock value. Then you never see them wear any of it after they make the haul. I really wish influencers would update us on how long the item lasted and how much use they actually get from the clothes.
@heatherva To be fair, I don't know how representative these hauls are and how much they push up the average. There are people with much smaller orders who don't produce content on social media. But that alone wouldn't make them so big.
I think it's a little trickier. We know through multiple exposes that influencers don't make as much money as they claim to or look like they have. It's usually rented or sponsored or just faked. But for influencers who can shop sustainable, it often means a higher expense. And a part of influencing is reliability. Given the current economic situation, a lot of people can't afford to shop sustainable and influencers need to be relatable, leading to them buying shein or whatever their audience can afford. This is obviously multi-faceted and not the only reason but it is a major one. But haul culture and bulk-purchasing is definitely not the way to go!
@@heatherva, additionally, though I’ll never tell someone on a tight budget what to do, a smarter approach would be to buy quality clothing on the used market. Especially if sustainability is their passion. I hated it back then, but my parents were on a tight budget when I was growing up, so my school clothes were quality pieces from thrift stores. As I got a bit older (teens), I was given a budget for new clothes, but I’d pick only a few durable pieces and wear them for the entire year or more. This was way before Shein existed, and Forever 21 hadn’t reached peak popularity. The great thing is, there are online thrift stores like Thred Up, so if one is looking for a very specific piece, then it likely exists. As I wrote in my own comment, though, some of my local thrift stores are getting overrun with Shein and its ilk, and dampening the thrifting experience. 😥
I talked to a friend of mine recently, both of us are 30. I was shook that she dismissively said "yeah sure, I am wearing clothes once and then throw them out, why would I not? It's so cheap." Wasn't aware there are actual real people that go like this about fashion. I am incredibly thankful I have been raised in a way to consciously think purchases through and am actually able to follow it as an adult 😊
The only thing I've ever gotten one use out of and had to toss was hosiery because I merked a foot out of them. Even small holes I no longer care about. I have a few pairs I keep for "fancy work needs" and that's it. All my stuff I buy to last. Reminds me, I have some tshirts to repurpose for cleaning rags or reusable bags
I mean I’ve bought shein and wish before and I actually still have a bra from wish from like 5 years ago and it still works great. I keep them until they aren’t able to be used
Load of lies most stuff on shein is good quality and I have been using for years. Most of our top UK and USA brands factories are in China anyways but they just then sell it for western prices. Most modern brands use slave labour etc unfortunately. Shein quality isn't any different from your average to even expensive brands. I've had a fair amount of things on there all of which are good nice material and have washed and lasted well. Spending more doesn't necessarily equate to better quality fabric. For reference I used to be anti shein for years until I realised Most brands I/we/everyone uses use cheap labour in chineese factories they then just uncharge us...shein doesn't. I have at least 2 dresses I can think of which I paid slightly more for on shein(not cheap shein prices) both are very Unqiue colours and details and have such nice breathable. Shein also refund quicker than any company ever I've done multiple returns with them and they always refund within 2 days of you sending the parcel.
@@laurs5551I find that ppl either get good quality or bad quality. Never in between. I also realize what some call good quality is mediocre since I actually know what I'm looking for in quality for myself. My aunts buy shien and there's always somethjng wrong kr coming apart ajd I have to fix it. Fabric is thin as hell and just weak seaming. I live in a different country that makes shipping anything very expensive. Hence I don't feel like wasting my money and time chancing a shit order from them.
i reuse them!! i use them for bags when I'm going on travel and for storage! i got some from when I used to not have a lot of money and I got a few items off romwe and I keep the ziplock bags and use them for other stuff !
I do this too but my sentimentality bites me on ONE specific item. I have one shirt that decided to tear itself apart at almost every joint. It’s one of my favorite shirts, so that sucker is slowly becoming more hand stitches than original fabric. I call it the Frankenshirt. Frankenshirt has given me so much free practice and I love him.
This is really interesting to me because I remember when chinese shops first came to my country it was socially unacceptable and tacky to buy these low quality products even tough people were quite poor back then. For my generation flexing is still buying high quality products that you absolutley cannnot afford on normal paycheks. How can cheap toxic waste even be a flex I honestly just don't get it 🤔
The spring break haul was so telling - “I don’t know if this will fit how I want, it’s weird, it’s not the best quality” then why buy it at all? 🧐 trial and error is one thing but this is next level
But it looks so cute! And this mini skirt, oh, wait, it isn't a mini skirt. But what is it then? If I only could remember what I ordered... :-o Seriously, I don't remember that I ever ordered shoes or clothes online. Even if it's more or less my size, it's still possible that the shape doesn't fit. Especially shoes 👞 👟
My grandfather passed on to me a beautiful leather jacket that's 75 years old. I get complements on it all the time. It's occurred to me that if you've truly landed your style, you want to purchase/have things that last, because you like the thing and always want to wear it. You get less stuff because you want to return to the pieces you like often. So of course Shein prefers you to lack self-confidence and trend-chase.
This is the answer! You spend the same on one incredible thing then you would on 3/4 crap things at SHEIN/temu/walmart and let it last. We are so easily manipulated to feed that dopamine receptor & impress others that we sacrifice so much in order to do so.
@@tb2dx, and to be clear, I realize not everyone has someone passing things like that down. Broad groups of exceptions. But people with relative resource access need to have a conversation with themselves.
I bought a vintage (allegedly 1970s) wine red leather trench coat on etsy a couple years ago and I get compliments every time I wear it. People adore that coat (with the possible exception of the cashier who said she thought I was cosplaying as Peter Quill). It’s unique and striking. Even with a couple missing buttons it still looks well made.
@@TempestPhaedra, and most people won't even notice the missing buttons (which could be replaced). Glad to hear you're giving the coat a long and happy life!
Omg yeah! My friend has a burberry jacket handed down from their grandma. It’s stunning just on its own, but a lot of the beauty I’d say lies in the quality.
"Purchasing trends is not a fundamental human right". EXACTLY. Many of the problems in our society come from people thinking their wants/privileges and their needs/rights are the same thing. NO. You are not entitled to something just because you want it. To desire something does not automatically give you the right to possess it, be this an object or even a human being. Erich Fromm talked about this in his book To have or to be.
Please keep making these videos! You have helped me SO MUCH. As a shopping addict I an so appreciative of what you’re doing. I have been able to change my habits and have already saved $1500 in just one no buy month. Thank you!!!!
I really appreciate that you're not yelling at me, Shawna! It might sound funny, but a lot of people with educational channels talk really fast and aggressive and unnecessarily loud. I love your calm approach on these topics. It makes it easier for me to listen. Glad I found your channel. 25:58 these few seconds alone made my brain hurt 🤯
The only time I technically bought a new phone case for a holiday was because my old one was broken anyway. I put off replacing it for months and ended up getting a new one just before I went away for the weekend.
I never heard of people buying clothes or other stuff they don’t really need before a holiday. Is that a thing? My bf and I went hiking and I needed shoes for it and in the store there were shorts for hiking and I bought a matching shirt and long socks for the shoes. I felt so extra buying all of this because of one vacation.
I’m so confused about why people arent more against Shein, I always see Shein being recommended in Tiktok comment sections and no one seems to have a problem with it??
Yeah I had one come upon my fyp, and though that the comments would be calling out how wasteful it was but nope they were all praising the person. It shocked me honestly
All of these marketplace sites look like shifty spam sites from the 2000s that we were taught never to enter. The lesson has stuck with me but I don’t know why so many people can just ignore that it looks like a place just built for stealing your money 😢
I was born in 2000 too but shein is cheaper than Walmart now especially and its wild bc the clothes come from the same place. Everyone's so mad at shein but walmart, target etc is buying the same things and selling them to everyone for 3x the price.
@@tiffanysbeautyhouse755 Walmart isn't adding literal millions of new clothes to its site every day, Shein is. Nobody is out here praising Walmart as a beacon of sustainability.
Idk why anyone would want all those clothes at once. I recently moved for college and just putting away my own clothes ive had for years was overwhelming.
I've had a half-baked thought for a while that SHEIN, Temu, Cider, and various other low cost super fast fashion retailers are basically influencer wholesalers. The same way you use capital to start a business by bulk buying materials, to start being a lifestyle influencer, you need to invest in an aspirational lifestyle. So, you invest start-up capital in super cheap clothing you know you don’t really care about just to make enough hauls and outfit videos to turn a profit from your affiliate links until you can afford to buy the good stuff, or get so much pr you'll never have to buy clothes again. Fake till you make it, basically edit: for 👡
As someone who has had 80% thrifted clothes since childhood (the other 20% mainly being socks and underwear), I will never understand these huge hauls. A 100-item haul of cheap new items would never make me even half as happy as I get when I leave the thrift store having scored 2 or 3 unique pieces in just my size for a good price. It's the thrill of the hunt. It's the payoff that comes when you've wanted a white denim jacket or a pair of plaid pants for months and after all that searching through racks upon racks, you find your grail item and it fits perfectly. And then you cherish and love the clothes you found and wear them all the time, and when people compliment them you get to go "can you believe I found these for only $4 at savers?" And one day if you outgrow or no longer love the piece, you can re-donate it so someone else can have a turn loving it. That feeling will always be miles above the instant gratification of going on one of these fast fashion sites and ordering a cheaply-made garmet that falls apart in 2 washes. Thrifting also goes a very long way if you're struggling with money. Sure, you can buy more if you go through a fast fashion sit, but its better to thrift fewer items that will last longer. A warm coat, thick socks, a few shirts and some sturdy jeans will go much farther than a bunch of crap that'll fall apart as you're wearing it (and then you're spending more money to replace it all). None of this is to say you CAN'T buy new clothes. We all deserve to treat ourselves sometimes. I for one like to buy T shirts at concerts, for example. I just think that for everyday life, it does us good both financially and environmentally to wear the clothes that are already here on this planet than constantly purchase brand new stuff. I mean, surely we as a species have enough clothes to go around?
I love to go thrifting, and unfortunately, I’m finding more and more Shein junk on the racks. I have never purchased their clothing new or used, except for one thrifted pair of shoes that I didn’t know were from Shein until after I took them home and researched. I have a feeling that others feel the same way. My local Goodwills have a system where they’ll mark a certain color tag to 50% off one week, and the next week, a new 50% color is introduced, while the previous week’s color drops to 75% off. I tend to see a lot of Shein clothing get to 75% off, and still no one has purchased it. Aside from the depressing knowledge that many of these clothes will just end up in landfills, it has taken the joy out of thrifting. The thrill of the thrift store is finding high-quality items for cheap.
If you care about landfills, you should really get some of that shein clothing. Their quality is absolutely fine I've had items from shein that have lasted 5 plus years and by items I mean 15 plus items from them I still have and that I've washed over 100 times. If you would take a walmart item, target or really just about any clothes store that isn't expensive...then you're being petty at this point by not taking shein as quality is fine and it would help planet to guve the clothed the self life they actually di have. Most of the shein stuff that is ending in landfills shouldn't really be there as everything I've got is good quality and will last me many more years to come. They even have their brand glow mode which is a literal lululemon dupe/fake for 1/5 the cost. Amazing soft material and washes really well. Thing is alot of these big companies when you look at where their factories or manufacturing is its China but then they just sell item to us for 5-10x price of shein for same quality...
@@laurs5551 shein quality is absolutely not fine, it's appalling. i've bought shein tops from depop and the lacing came off after a couple of wears, the straps came undone, and sometimes the material feels like the plastic that is used for bin bags.
@@laurs5551 lmao girl bffr. I have the real lululemon define jacket and I’ve worn the shein dupe. The quality is not comparable at all, and the fact u can’t see that says a lot.
As someone who would shop there when I was younger because I was uneducated, most stuff actually lasts a while. I would only get 90-100% cotton items tho. I have stuff from years ago and their still wearable 🫠
I have a 15yo H&M coat and 10yo primark tops. If you consume wildly you will not be sustainable even if you buy from sustainable brands or second hand.
@@verybarebonesexactly. A good portion of my wardrobe is from Walmart because of how accessible Walmart is and because it’s what I can afford. Many, many items have lasted me five and ten years. I take good care of my clothing and I don’t over consume. I want to be able to actually feel fabrics and try things on. I will buy leggings online since they stretch, however and have found a brand that I really like the quality of. I know that Walmart is not a good company, and I am not defending them at all. But, we don’t have to choose to over consume and actively make things worse either.
I also shop on Shein sometimes because of the prices, tho I'm not proud to admit it :// I actually bought clothes hangers, a pair of snow boots for winter (My feet is too cold in winter, I didn't have any) and a coat. But I also got a fidget toy and an item that reminds me of my favourite show (Doctor Who 💗), which I obviously didn't need, but really wanted. I'm both very excited and feeling horrible for it 🙈 But I always wear my clothes until they tear and then I still use them for DIY or simply around the house. (I would wear them further, my parents are against it tho, haha) I much prefer buying second hand clothes, but even these aren't affordable anymore, especially in (mostly) modest 1960s style that I much prefer and love. I feel like second hand shopping used to be much more affordable and easier:// It can be also because I'm forced to shop second hand clothes online due to health issues, maybe the situation is different in person?
I feel like the news on the utter lack of human rights for shein workers and the blatant dumping of overproduced clothes should deter people from buying shein at all.
OMG, exactly! I spent around €600 on clothes this spring/summer, but I buy quality for a higher price. And those clothes are in a classic style and will last me for years. Would never buy that plastic shite from Shein or Temu.
@@eggi4443 true. The folks out here finding almost a $1k to spend on there really had some kind of situation type deal happen. I always wonder how much they return or sell. I see so much SheIn and Fashion Nova in Goodwill. Sometimes can even scrap the stuff for material
I knew I had a shopping problem when this would happen. I would get a package and be like wtf is this because I bought so much constantly I would forget what u got. So sad
I’m currently in WEEK 6(!!)of my clothing no buy. I can’t believe I’m this far. It was going to be for August only but now that I have momentum I’m going until January. Your channel is helping me soooo much. I’ve been watching your videos instead of window shopping online. Thanks girl 💖 also, looove your top in this one; you look stunning! 🩴🩰🥿
For some reason this put me in mind of a girl I knew years ago, who had so much more money than the rest of us. She described the underwear from Primark (the cheapest clothing shop chain in the UK) as "disposable pants" like to take on holiday and throw in the bin at the end to make room for souvenirs. Most of us were in complete shock because that was the only brand we could afford as our actual underwear.
The "buy stuff for a vacation" mentality ALMOST got me this week. At work there was a cute navy blue knit sweater with red lobsters knitted into the pattern by vinyard vines. I'm going to Maine ans Boston in a few weeks so i thought "oh cute! Its maine vibes" then I thought "wait. It's still august and flippin HOT. I'm NOT wearing a woolen sweater. I'm sure lots of lobster motifs will be available at gift shops when i get there."😂😅
But do you NEED lobster motifs on ANYTHING? And gift shops are so expensive! Aren't you trying to get talked out of buying it instead of justifying waiting just to spend more later? ❤
Won’t you be around a lot of water and Maine is far north making it colder. You wanted one sweater why not we out here working hard we can get a sweater.
I would buy something with lobsters, but for my daily life not vacations 👀 (tho I'm also the kind of person who waits after Valentine's Day to get heart-shaped stuff to use all year long because it's lovely so I'm not the best example, I love eccentric stuff according to most people)
Ok but buying something with a local little animal and STATE NAME/TOWN NAME, AQUARIUM/NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM/ETC is fun!! Find the little tourist shop on Main St and it’s a little expensive, but fun! I got me and my bestie matching XXL sweatshirts on my vacation recently. Little otters holding hands. So I hope you DO go out and find a little lobster sweater or something and treat yourself! Buying a little treat you don’t really need but want, and know you’re gonna wear, is completely different than bulk impulse spending $400+ dollars (even if the tourist shops up charge a bit). Just check yourself and your intentions if impulsive shopping is an issue.
If given the opportunity I would totally reuse those Shein bags as crochet project + yarn storage bags. I’m kind of salivating over the idea. I use grocery bags but the Shein bags look thicker, non-static, and they have a zip! The Shein girls should find a local crafting group to donate their bags to for reuse, I bet they’d get snapped up
@@TempestPhaedralol my toddler's daycare is *full* of these bags, they have been asking parents to bring them in because they use them to keep art projects and supplies
Part of why the hauls are so ridiculous is to create a “set point” in your mind against which you should compare your purchases. If all the hauls are 50-100 items, your 10 item order seems reasonable, even modest! And now shopping at a regular shop where this same haul money will only get you 1 or 2 or 3 items seems “expensive” and “for rich people”. Because your set point has moved plus inflation has legitimately increased prices but reducing your consumption level can feel bad so you stick with low quality high quantity clothes shopping.
I bought from Shein twice. Once I learned how unethical and how bad for the environment this brand is, I never purchased from them again. The quality of the clothing isn’t good. It’s also insane in the thrift shops the amount of fast fashion that sits there.
Oh my god. Seeing that overshoot day creep higher and higher made me sick to my stomach. Thank you for bringing this to my awareness and being a voice for reason. Maybe we can make a change, one person at a time. I know I've rethought SO much of my consumption since finding your vids, and I was never a huge consumer. You're making a difference in this world!
I feel like at this stage it’s been proven that individuals won’t do what’s best for future generations and governments need to put in legislation preventing people from buying from these sellers. They won’t do that though because they’re driven by money under capitalism.
i went kinda shein crazy in 2020 when quarantine started (as a lot of ppl did unfortunately) because the cheap prices were alluring and i was going through a lot at the time (recovering from an ed by myself and major depression) so i was shopping a lot to cope. i used to watch SO many shein hauls, like i had a whole shein haul TH-cam playlist i would add to every day. it was so bad 😭 it took me a few years to snap out of it and im still recovering from a shopping addiction to this today. fortunately shein isn’t one of my problem stores anymore after truly recognizing how unethical and mid quality they are. ngl some of the clothes i ordered back then from shein still hold up but most of them didn’t age well and some have started to show signs of wear and close to tearing and i regret spending so much on those clothes. cuz even tho they are cheap, the prices add up the more you buy from them. like im embarrassed to share how much i spent on shein over the span of 4 years, but idek cuz that’s how much it was 💀 but i try not to beat myself up over it cuz i also recognize that i was in a different and dark head space at at the time, and what matters now is that i know better and have snapped out of it. $900 shein haul is so crazy to me. you could buy better quality pieces with that money that will actually last and make you happy. in fact, i can’t imagine casually dropping $900 on a clothing shopping spree of all things. as much as ive bought due to my shopping addiction, ive never spent that much money at once on clothes because that just sounds so unnecessary and extra 😭
Im with you girl i was the exact same but now just the thought of buying it/ how crazy i went over it makes me feel sick 😢 I'm glad we realised how bad it was lol!!
I just did a thrift "haul" and got six pieces for fourteen bucks: a wild 70s golf hat, a pair of low rise khaki shorts, and four chunky bracelets. Half the fun of thrifting is the hunt, the other half is knowing that you're helping keep resources in play. I can't imagine doing an online haul, where you can just type in what you want and find it. Like, how is that fun?!
Plus the thrift store stuff will be better quality than anything from Shein. I just got a pair of Lululemon capri pocket leggings for $5 on my last thrift haul, for example (and the reason I even did a "haul" was because of back to school.)
I saw these haul videos around the time I heard about no buy and decluttering. And I thought, OK, that's it, we are doomed. Even if I don't buy anything for the rest of my life, I can't level out these hauls.
@@jochenkraus7016 you can help make low consumption normal again. Communities and spaces like this one prove that we are making change happen. Just have a look at all the comments of people saying they're working very hard on consuming more consciously and much less overall. :)
I feel like I have ~30 items for work (pants, blouses, sweaters, cardigans, jackets, etc). Then I have comfy clothes for when I’m home/running errands, gym clothes for exercise, casual clothing for going out, speciality/formal outfits (interview, snow pants, raincoat, black tie, funeral, etc). I also tend to pull in and out my clothes for the seasons. Clothing for 90 deg weather is way different than -10 deg weather. I definitely feel like I have 100+ pieces.
As a Shein customer (for basic articles of clothing here and there - I try to stick to cotton and non-elastic blends) your explanation of World Overshoot Day has been the most persuasive argument against fast fashion I've heard so far. Makes me want to wear nothing but wool, even in the summer.
I just found your channel yesterday and I am obsessed. We need more of this discourse online. I love how you dive into each subject with so much nuance and understanding.
For people who struggle with the addictive nature of overconsumption: I totally recommend getting into clothing DIYs and thrift flip videos instead. You get the same dopamine rush because you see new shiny clothes, but it's extremely encouraging to try re-working old clothes instead of getting rid of everything. Most of these TH-camrs buy second-hand as well.
Also, the library, and apps like Libby and Overdrive. Those give the feeling of browsing and getting something but it’s free and 100% guilt free, in fact the more you use the library the more you’re helping them secure funding so you’re actually doing a public service by going on a library “shopping spree” every week. I use Libby to checkout audiobooks for driving and I get DVDs from the library for movies that I can’t find online. I won’t lie, I do enjoy the dopamine rush of shopping but thankfully I get it from the library too!
I was under the impression that a bunch of the 500+ Shein hawls were gifted product. Like "here's a 500$ giftcard. Get what you want" and beacuse it's "gifted" people didn't disclose it as an ad. I never throught that people were actually spending their own money on the mega hauls.
THIS. I'm absolutely certain that this is Shein's marketing strategy, and that these people aren't buying for a vacation or anything like it. The hauls have the same relation to reality that a Glamour magazine photo spread does -- the company has said 'here, have these free clothes and say that you bought them for 'vacation' or 'my new job' or 'spring break'". I'm sure that the company just contacts them and offers them pre-selected packages of clothing in their size. Nobody actually buys 100 pieces of clothing at a time for any reason whatsoever, but it's very much the sort of thing that marketing departments would send out as samples.
Your comment on vacation is spot on. It is nice having new clothes for vacation but is it needed? No! The clothes being linked to memories is also accurate.
I found your channel on Friday and I’ve been watching/listening nonstop. I’ve been really enjoying being educated on overconsumption and how I can actually make a change
All of the boutique / curated second-hand stores near me have signs up refusing all shein items. Its such a big issue. Last time i went to one, the poor cashier had to try to explain that no, she could not accept an overflowing basket of fast fashion garbage that will disintegrate in one washing machine cycle. Shein lady kept trying to argue that they were "on trend" ....... bruh
Sometimes I go on shien and add like 3 items to my cart that I love. Then I close it down and think about it for a day or two and usually after 24 hours I've forgotten . I end up never buying the clothes but I got to scratch the instant gratification shopping itch 😂😂
I automatically flag any channel with a Shein or Temu haul video as "don't recommend this channel." (Edit: Amazon, too. At least on youtube, I don't do tiktok)
What i hate about these Shein hauls is its Shein who gives these influencers a certain amout of money to spend to do these massive hauls essentially paying them in cloths to get a video out of these influencers.
I bought something second hand from a thrift store that was still brand new. It was from a site like Shein. It started to fall apart after the first wash on delicate and in a lingerie bag. By the second was the actually fabric was deteriorating. Most of my clothing is thrifted and I have NEVER had this happen with anything before.
Very intelligent and thoughtful video essay. I refuse to purchase SHEIN! I thrift pretty much all my clothes bc the quality of 80s and 90s clothes is amazing ! As my style is clean and minimalist it’s pretty classic and hasn’t gone out of style. But frankly I am pretty confident and don’t care what’s trendy. Thanks for spreading awareness.
Hi Shawna, not sure you'll see this at this point in the comments, but I wanted to thank you for all you do in your videos. I'm a recovering shopping addict, and I'm still finding it difficult to resist the temptation to spend on pointless things that I know I don't need. Whenever I feel the itch to go shopping, I always check out your channel first, and I find your videos very therapeutic and eye-opening. Thank you!
The absolute guilt I feel when I have to buy items of clothes new, I buy 98% of stuff second hand, and people are just out here buying 100+ items and just being able to go about life not feeling disgusted with themselves?

Tip for trips : if you want to be excited about the trip without shopping, try planning your outfits and the clothes you will pack, with what you already own. That's what I did this summer: I don't go on vacation every year (let alone several times a year), so a month before, I started remembering which clothes I wanted to wear, looking in my closet, rediscovering items I had forgotten about, planning outfits for any possible weather and activity... I had quite a few lists and felt very good. Eventually, I had put so much thought into it that I have never packed such a small number of clothes. My backpack was super light. And the same goes with planning anything: meals, activities, board games you want to take with you...
Recently I had to replace a skirt I had in my closet that didn't fit anymore. I searched offline and online Vintage stores but simply couldn't find the right type of skirt in the right color in my size. After I had exhausted all thrift options, I decided to go and buy this one item at Zara. I loved the new skirt but the night after I woke up with a panic attack because I felt so guilty I bought this fast fashion item. And then I see this.
As someone ho used to buy new clothes on a weekly basis, cutting back was a really tough part of my "underconsumption" journey, but it really is all so unnecessary. If I am buying something new, particularly for a specific occasion, I have a rule that I have to be able to come up with multiple other places I can where that item. If it is only useful for that one occasion I find something else that I can get more use out of. It's actually caused me to have a lot more fun with my wardrobe, finding ways to dress up and down the same piece!
It’s interesting that the first TikTok was Australian. There was an Australian report recently that said that we consume the most textiles in the world and spend less per item and the average is 56 items new per year. I’m ashamed of my country. The media is suggesting that the government is going to start putting an extra levy on clothing but idk if it’s going to actually happen 😢
"Viewers want to look for things to want" is soo true. I've been very into beauty community at one point and I did not even realise that I was essentially watching hour-long ads. Once I stopped watching videos about makeup, my interest gradually died. I have only replaced concealer this year, that was my only beauty purchase.
Like, fast fashion is so wasteful and just points a neon "I'm a horrible person" sign to these dreadful people. And the fact that they likely just toss their old clothing out rather than donating them to people that need the clothing?? Awful. And it's sad that donating clothes to a second-hand store isn't a good, affordable option any more. 🙁 Unrelated: your voice is so calming, omg. 😭❤️
Over the last three years, I've been slowly trying to replace my entire wardrobe (some 50-60 pieces of clothing, underwear not included) at the least) after I transitioned from female to male. I still have so much of my girl clothes that I hide under more masculine clothing because I don't have the money to replace it. And yet I can't imagine buying all of my clothes, replacing all of the clothing items I once expected to last me years, with cheap Shein products that will wear out after a year of constant use. I have a MASSIVE need to replace all the clothing that no longer fits me. It's not just a few shirts here & there, or a pair of pants that no longer fits, I'm actively replacing my entire wardrobe. & still the amount of bs I see being sold on Shein is appalling, I can't imagine actually using all that stuff, actively wearing it in day-to-day life
Love your content, it really sparks conversations that are so important. Especially the "restock" videos and buying more stuff to feel like you're getting organised! I have bought from shein about 3 times over the past few years, one was a holdall bag as I simply didn't have the budget for a new, decent quality one and it's still going strong 🤞🏻
New subscriber here! I used to be a Forever 21 teen (I didn’t know it was fast fashion when I was in high school in ~2010) and shopped at urban outfitters all the time. None of the clothing from that time lasted more than 2 seasons. I now focus on buying a few items a season, if that, and prioritize quality fabrics and only buy for my style, not trends. I appreciate this video and am excited to watch more of your content!
Only recently getting into your videos but they’re always so interesting! One thing I want to ask for is that when you use articles and show passages on the screen, to please highlight the sentences you’re reading from them. I’m hard of hearing and the automatic captions only work so well. Thank you!
Agree 100% with not shopping specifically for vacations. I want to bring my most comfortable, most reliable, absolute favorite clothes and shoes that make me feel and look my best. Why would I want to risk bringing something that might chafe, rub, fit weird, or be in any way uncomfortable while walking 20,000 steps a day.
I dont overconsume anything!! Ive embraced a simplistic lifestyle, it makes everything so much easier. but every time I do buy something I need or want I thank God I can afford it because many people cannot.
its so bad! i recently visited my mom and i saw she had a shein cloth i was weirded out becasue she cant really use the internet etc and i asked her about it. Her friend who is kinda rich made her buy that cloth from her because it didnt fit her and god. that woman can buy better clothes but no she buys shein. also the fabric was horrible i told my mom to never buy anything like this from her because its toxic etc and my poor mom had no idea how could she know.
I only buy secondhand, for a few years already! This year i bought 15 items so far and honestly i feel like thats already a bit much to be honest and i still wish i would buy less. If these people had only 1% of that feeling...
i was wondering when you would talk about this! never bought anything from shien and PROUD OF IT 🥰 we don't support super fast fashion in this household! (esp when you have other alternatives)
Im 14 and since I was 12 my wardrobe didn't really change and every time i get new clothes i get them from some family member or i trift them and I'm really happy with it. So i dont realy understand this behaviour
ive gotten shien at the thrift store just by not noticing the tag. I sometimes feel a bit scammed, but i also know that i will get more use out of it then the previous owner, so i feel less bad. tossing it after a few wears is wild, ive had a shirt (thrifted) that ive worn for like 2 years, and it still holds up great. I plan on turning the design into jacket patches when it eventually gives out
I am only allowed to buy from Shein once a year. I have a very niche aesthetic (going strong for almost 3 years now, not a micro trend) and Shein is helpful for finding some niche items. But I have really strict rules, its not allowed over 50 dollars, once a year only, i search really hard for cotton items if its clothing, and I have to keep the items in my cart for a month before i purchase. I'm working hard to not use it at all anymore
@@Wanda-v4b awww thats the sweetest! I'm a retro/recreationist for the 50s. I used Shein for clip on earrings 😂😅 but i recently got a chance to go to Japan and they have SO MANY clip on options there so I wont/dont need Shein for anything anymore
You say “we’re vastly over time” on some of your longer videos. I just thought I would mention that I don’t mind your long videos! I throw them on while I prep dinner and do the dishes, so long videos keep me from stopping what I’m doing midway (risking distraction) to find another video.

Meanwhile I'm waiting for my 3-5 items on my Zalando list to go on sale so that I can get new pieces of clothing that I desperately want and need (I haven't purchased new clothes in like a year) ...
Girl, “participating in large-scale behavior that strips our planet of its resources”… cut, print and send it to production! Ohkay! Say it again. Say it louder. That hit me like a ton of bricks. You better preach!
If your dumping you new clothes on the floor you bought too many! Haha wow 🤯 I love your videos!!! Thank you for the good you are bringing to the world!! Love from Colorado
I don't blame anyone who has to buy inexpensive clothing because they can't afford expensive things. People who can spend $ 1,000.00 on SHEIN however... Whoever can spend that amount on SHEIN has enough money to buy sustainable and ethically sourced clothes.
Wow, I felt bad when I ordered about 10 dresses within one year because all my favorites fell apart after about 10 years of wearing them all the time 😂
As a plus size person, I'll add that as an Asian company, the sizing is extremely different than Western sizing. Significantly smaller! They will list something as 6-7X that is maybe a 22/24 at most (which is a 2X traditionally in US), so it makes sense to me that they show them on non-plus size models because they are barely plus sized items.
I'm so hyped up when you brought up buying different outfits for every day of your vacation! I'm clutching my phone so tightly because this is what im currently experiencing with my friend group! We decided to go on a short vacation together in a few months and they brought up colour-coordinating so it will look cute in our photos and what not. The problem is, their ideas/suggestions are so specific that it doesn't match with my own aesthetics that I'd be forced to buy new clothes for those few days of vacation! It's so infuriating😂 It's one thing if someone say something 'blue' because at least i can wear my baby blue dress. Nope. It's something specific like 'navy blue blouse/shirt and white jeans'. I've always been a pastel kind of girl. Has been for almost 11 years now so it's almost impossible for them not to know. Oh, and yes, nobody has those specific colour and jeans either so everyone has to buy something new. And that's only for day 1😂 At this point, I'm just ready to back out entirely and save my money for something else. Why waste money for something that I'm gonna be wearing once? I may donate the clothes once the vacation is over but I'm not made of money so I'd rather not buy them in the first place😂
for 900 dollars you can get a coach bag and like rly rly nice clothes at h&m old navy or literally wherever else. why would you want cheap clothes? let alone 80 items of it
I wear mostly fast fashion, the most fancy I can afford is Zara 😂. But on any day, I would rather buy a $900 wintercoat, bag or pair of shoes than 100 separate pieces of wardrobe.
upcycling a pair of pants (technically combining 2 pairs) watching your videos and theyre helping to remind me why i started doing things like this in the first place
I understand that shein is bad for the environment, wasteful, and overall non sustainable. It’s a problem for me however because people dont realize that the same type of materials that are on shein are also found in stores. It’s a polyester apocalypse!! Also, since shein is so cheap, it definitely preys on people who have less of a budget. For example, high school/college students. They honestly just want cute clothing without breaking the bank. I think that we should hate on the influencers that have money and still buy shein. They have enough money to buy from brands that use sustainable materials, and yet they make $1000+ shein hauls. For what?? Again, I understand every hate comment that Shein gets. But honestly, i feel like people who have a smaller budget than many just want cute clothing!
I feel like the idea of buying new clothes for a vacation isn't always a problem, but it needs to be done thoughtfully. For example, it depends on the kind of trip you are going on. For example, when I went on a cruise to the Bahamas, I got some new stuff - not because I couldn't wear what I already had or anything, but I was from the Midwest and didn't have a lot of clothing that was suitable for the climate. I needed a swimsuit so I could go swimming (I didn't have one at the time). A cover up. A couple dresses - because I needed a slightly more formal one for the dress code at a restaurant on the ship. But I did end up wearing all of them more than once on the trip. I'm also thinking I will be taking a trip to Costa Rica in the future and that's going to necessitate new clothes, because I will be hiking in the rainforest looking for birds. I don't have the right shoes and clothing to deal with that kind of environment safely and comfortably. I think responsibility is the most important thing. If you're going to buy new clothes for a trip, do it responsibly. Just a few things at most, but also consider whether you actually need something new for this specific trip. Most of the time you don't.
watching videos like this does make me appreciate how I grew up and was taught how to deal with clothes. Ended up getting a lot of clothes from cousins and my sister to the point that there wasn't really any need to go out shopping for more. I was very lucky in that regard. It has however made me very anxious when it comes to buying anything lol I buy 3 pairs of jeans and I buy them so I can wear them for years to come.
That's $900 of clothing that will basically be garbage in like 6 months because it's that poorly made out of absolutely garbage material. So so not worth it.
I bought a few of times in shein, the quality of some pieces are decent, specially hair accesories, certain denim skirts, some chiffon dresses, sweaters (one of them is incredibly durable) and some of them were straight trash: the sizing is inconsistent, then I realize i just can go to a store and look for a better quality item. Even if i dont do massive purchases, I realized buying there is like gambling and not sustainable, then i dont buy items in tjat website in a while.
It’s crazy because I feel like I can’t even go to the thrift anymore because all I see is donated SHEIN clothes
Yessss. It's so poor quality but thrift stores price it probably higher than the original owner paid for it.
And they even ask for high prices 😒
Yes! I thrift clothes for fabric for crafting. Never yet found a Shein item I wanted to buy - the fabric is horrible. It's getting harder to find anything worthwhile.
I never see Shein at my goodwill. Just old, old clothes.
fr. i won’t buy it even if it’s second hand. the quality is awful and it’s full of toxic materials
I'd be so embarressed If i did a 900$ Shein Haul
Yeah, it’s literally what I pay for rent every month 😭💀
Idk if I could find $900 worth of items on there I like that much.
no actually because the amount of better things you can get with 900$
If you’ve got that money to spend on clothes you could still MANY way better quality things lol like I don’t get it
@sheatemyheartt right like if I had the 900 to spend on clothes I def wouldn't be looking on shien lol
@@jochenkraus7016 no one should be buying anything from shein period. No matter the haul size.
So no shein but walmart, target, marshalls, homegoods is fine? 😅@thismachinekillsmusic2
I keep them until they aren’t able to be used
This was literally a point in Beave New World SMH. "Spend, don't mend" or something

Oooo I’m gonna look into that read’

Fake till you make it, basically
edit: for 👡
I really do think this happens, and you can haul the stuff in the process
The influencer starter kit!
That’s actually so spot on
As someone who has had 80% thrifted clothes since childhood (the other 20% mainly being socks and underwear), I will never understand these huge hauls.

Every single item I got from shein is still in pretty good shape actually! But you do need to be careful with your choices

I bought a few sweaters from Shein YEARS ago. I still wear them. You can be sustainable with fast fashion, it’s a choice.
I have a 15yo H&M coat and 10yo primark tops. If you consume wildly you will not be sustainable even if you buy from sustainable brands or second hand.
True. I wear most of my shein items several years. Anyone who claims the clothes only hold up for 2-3 washes doesn't know what they're talking about.
@@verybarebonesexactly. A good portion of my wardrobe is from Walmart because of how accessible Walmart is and because it’s what I can afford. Many, many items have lasted me five and ten years. I also shop on Shein sometimes because of the prices, tho I'm not proud to admit it :// I actually bought clothes hangers, a pair of snow boots for winter (My feet is too cold in winter, I didn't have any) and a coat.

OMG, exactly! I spent around €600 on clothes this spring/summer, but I buy quality for a higher price. And those clothes are in a classic style and will last me for years. Would never buy that plastic shite from Shein or Temu.
Why do influencers opening SHEIN hauls act like everything inside is a surprise? You bought it??
Could you remember over 100 items? Their surprise might be real 😅
They may not. Sometimes it takes 2 months to get to you and most of them buy 200 items so they have no clue what they got
@@deltasaves to be fair, if you have no idea what you bought you probably shouldn't have bought it
@@eggi4443 true.

I'm sure lots of lobster motifs will be available at gift shops when i get there."😂😅
I’m from New England, I promise you’ll find a half dozen navy blue things with lobsters on them once you get to Maine! 😊
In addition to the unethical labor, the amount of plastic bags is making me ill 😣
@@TempestPhaedra i buy off shein sometimes, where can i donate?
They never show the poor fit or comment on the cheap smell of these clothes. It’s ALL made of plastic. Could retitle these “huge plastic haul”
Right?? Like ohh yes girl can’t wait to wear some sheets of plastic and sweat, smell, get itchy rashes and feel soooo breezy and comfortable! Lol
Because your set point has moved plus inflation has legitimately increased prices but reducing your consumption level can feel bad so you stick with low quality high quantity clothes shopping.
this is a good point
I bought from Shein twice. Once I learned how unethical and how bad for the environment this brand is, I never purchased from them again. The quality of the clothing isn’t good. It’s also insane in the thrift shops the amount of fast fashion that sits there.
Same
The last time I came across a SHEIN haul I almost had a panic attack 😅 it’s just too much! Please just buy clothes you actually LOVE and WEAR
"This top, I was so excited for!" How can you remember that out of the 101 items you just bought??
I have 42 items of clothing. (Not counting pj's and underwear) what do you even do with 101 items? We'll, I have no social life, but still!
Bringing in 101 items at once is insane, it's a lot!!
I’ve never counted how much clothes I have not gonna lie but I probably have around 50. 101 pieces of clothing at once is crazy
I realized I have a ton of clothes but they are mainly all comfy home clothes. 😂
@explodingpryro I'm retired, that's why I can get away with so little
As a Shein customer (for basic articles of clothing here and there - I try to stick to cotton and non-elastic blends) your explanation of World Overshoot Day has been the most persuasive argument against fast fashion I've heard so far.
Makes me want to wear nothing but wool, even in the summer.
As someone with a wool allergy (linoleic fat), I wish I could 😭
I just found your channel yesterday and I am obsessed.
Shein lady kept trying to argue that they were "on trend" ....... bruh
I really respect and appreciate you for not using teenagers’ videos. ❤️
I do the same, instant unfollow and mark as not interested. I know they offer good money but everyone knows they are terrible quality and unethical
What i hate about these Shein hauls is its Shein who gives these influencers a certain amout of money to spend to do these massive hauls essentially paying them in cloths to get a video out of these influencers.
👠 Loving your content and your intelligent, well-researched discussions of these topics. Much respect! Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you!
I don't think you should feel guilty for buying brand new stuff, just do it rationally
@@ronabrookes61 why are we now shaming people for buying new clothes? I am plus size i really struggle finding anything cute in my size in second hand shops, so i shop on plt often🤷🏻♀️ just cus it works for you doesnt mean it works for others
My wardrobe isnt that big that mix and match in items is true especially when you dont know hway to wear
Unrelated: your voice is so calming, omg. 😭❤️
Speaking as a low-income person, FAST FASHION ISN'T WORTH IT! Seriously, it wears out _way_ too fast and costs more money in the long run.
Your correct on alpt of this... unfortunatly as a family of 4 i find myself shopping on shein every season.
What’s your aesthetic? Maybe we can crowdsource other options.
@@Wanda-v4b awww thats the sweetest! I'm a retro/recreationist for the 50s. I used Shein for clip on earrings 😂😅 but i recently got a chance to go to Japan and they have SO MANY clip on options there so I wont/dont need Shein for anything anymore
Shein hauls like the ones shown make my skin crawl
I grew up at the beach and haven’t even owned 14 bikinis in my entire life!
The amount of SHEIN I see in thrift stores is incredible. SHEIN and H&M is 90% of the racks.
You say “we’re vastly over time” on some of your longer videos. I just thought I would mention that I don’t mind your long videos! I throw them on while I prep dinner and do the dishes, so long videos keep me from stopping what I’m doing midway (risking distraction) to find another video.
glad to hear it! This video started off at about 80 minutes, maybe one of these days i'll just let it go 😅
@@shawnaripari I’d love that! if you’re worried about your algorithm, you could always release the “unabridged” versions of videos a while after the initial edited down release. Then for those of us who love to hear you pop off can (re)watch the longer ones. 🤩
I think she's mainly preaching to the choir here.
(I admit, I learned that phrase some time ago and I think it fits here 😅 )
I love the way you pace your videos- its hard for me to pay attention to anything but your vids have me locked in

I love your content and peaceful vibe. your account is very welcoming and safe. I am gen z and I always look forward to watching your videos 🥿👠👢🥳
I'm so happy to hear that 💕 thanks for being here
I don't blame anyone who has to buy inexpensive clothing because they can't afford expensive things.
I'd love to watch more of you talking about normal/under consumption content!
That’s why I only brought 4 items at once cause I ain’t getting a whole box of clothes if I haven’t tried the quality 🤷♀️
It's so infuriating😂
It's one thing if someone say something 'blue' because at least i can wear my baby blue dress.
And that's only for day 1😂
At this point, I'm just ready to back out entirely and save my money for something else. Why waste money for something that I'm gonna be wearing once? I may donate the clothes once the vacation is over but I'm not made of money so I'd rather not buy them in the first place😂
for 900 dollars you can get a coach bag and like rly rly nice clothes at h&m old navy or literally wherever else. why would you want cheap clothes? let alone 80 items of it
So glad to have boycotted shopping as a hobby. It’s going to take years to rectify my situation!
I’m a recent subscriber and I find your topics extremely fascinating. 👟
I'm so glad to hear it!!
Yes, on a ski trip we just had to get -0 jackets and thermal pants/socks, everything else like normal clothes underneath was stuff i already had🐑
👞 👟 👠 gotta give you more than one cause it’s shein 😂
omg 😂
watching videos like this does make me appreciate how I grew up and was taught how to deal with clothes.
