I feel you. I’m living that fear right now. I went into a deep depression and stopped caring for my appearance at all when I came out of it all my makeup was several years expired. I was low on my two favorite perfumes when I went in. When I came out both of my favorite perfumes have been discontinued, and a totally different profile is currently popular, so I can’t even find anything similar. I’m not into the clean/soap and vanilla scents that are everywhere right now. I’ve spent more time than I care to admit on Fragrantica trying to pin down what the profiles I like are so I at least have a starting point to look for a replacement. It sucks so hard. I’m basically having to start over entirely, and I’m honestly considering giving up. I really wish I bought like 6 of them when I had the chance, as I wore them every day. It was the one thing I splurged on, and the current lineup most designers have are a huge letdown. But for most products, I feel like they’re pretty interchangeable. I can find a different eyeliner. Black is always available. I can find new eyeshadow - neutral tones have staying power. Or lipstick. Red and berry tones are always findable. I can find a different blush, since brick reds are always around. I might even get tired of mine and be interested in a change. If it’s technique based you’ll probably be able to find something that works for you in the event of a discontinuation.
Never thought of the concept of having a “fantasy self” but this made me realize that I definitely buy for a “fantasy self” that would love bold lips or bright liners/blushes and neverrrr use it lol I definitely need to spotlight that part of my spending and stop while I’m ahead 🤣💸
I wanna add to this and say even if you loved something in the past, I loved to wear bright unusual color lipstick and eyeshadow when I was younger; it doesn’t mean you have to force yourself to do it or hold on to your past self if you just aren’t into that anymore. I am currently trying to come to terms with this and let go of this idea that I need a lime green eyeshadow (that I don’t want to wear anymore) to be a cool girl still.

Now i just use blush for everything from eyeshadow to lipstick. I really need to recognize that and that it’s okay to not wanna represent brat summer on your face.
Being an older person, I really miss having things like Avon samples to actually try for a week or so without committing. Those teeny lipstick samples were amazing. I’ve become a trial size first buyer. I’d rather pay a little more per unit for a small amount instead of buying larger more expensive options and feeling obligated to that choice. I just really miss practical purchasing.
Hi! If you have a Sephora or a Dept Store near you, you can ask for a sample of different items. My Bobbie Brown counter always makes me up a sample on the spot (most of the time in a tiny jar or container). Very helpful. PS: I'm 52 and remember those fantastic tiny lipstick samples. ❤💋
We still have Avon in Italy, I love them!! The problem is that they are not “tik tok “ worth .. but their products are really good and you get the chances to try them
Avon kid here!!! I inherited all of my mother’s samples and returns. Those were the Good Ole’ Days!!! My classmates would get Avon swag as party favors at sleepovers. ❤

Some places still give out samples. I was looking for a foundation and couldn't find my shade and I went to a big beauty store (I'm in the UK) and I asked for samples the lady was amazing she tried to match me and gave me 3 and told me to check them in daylight. She also gave me a few other samples too. She was lovely I was with her for an hour didn't buy anything but left with good advice and went back the next week and brought my correct shade from her
As a person who has worked in cosmetic sales for years. ANY TIME I did a shade match I would walk my guests over to big windows or even ask them to walk outside to look and pick a shade. And yes! Make a note in your phone your perfect shade of foundation you love. So easy to compare side by side in store if you can’t, or don’t want help.
THIS!! Wear it out. See how it looks and make a decision when you’re comfy. I’m ungodly pale and I turn to a tan during summer but go back to pale in winter. I keep a bottle of a deeper tone that suits my tan (once I get to a certain shade I don’t tan much more somehow and I’ve never gotten burnt) and I get one that’s the palest and I just mix the two because one month I’m one color and one month I’m another. It’s just better for me to use my two then buy one of every tone between 💀
I suffer from buyers remorse so often and you make a ton of great points. You really have to be realistic when shopping otherwise you're just pouring money down the drain..
Maybe a bit out of topic but liquid blushes and bronzers if you already have the powder version. We don't actually need to layer them, a single step is enough most of the time
This is a valid point that isn’t noted often! I personally layer them because it helps with longevity + it’s fun for me to mix colors. But on days when I’m in a rush, I only use one or the other.
I was going to add this is genius if you’re doing a project pan 😮 Getting two in one usage when trying to use up both a cream and powder product - although excessive, great for project planners 😅
for me my “fantasy self” is the one that wears neutrals… I do neutral looks like two times a month. maybe two times a week in fall, but grungy ones. so for me buying colorful, especially purple eyeshadow is the smartest thing ahah.

I feel this as well! Based on this type of advice there's a blue green lipstick that I never bought, but it happens all the time where I'm like you know what I want to wear with this look right now?? And I don't have it!! So yeah definitely good to know yourself when buying makeup
I bought a really cute purple/pink eyeshadow palette from rom&nd, I don’t use it regularly but it’s always there when I want a more colorful look for special events :D my other palette is a little square of neutral browns and a single eyeshadow that’s a nice coral (?) color. I’m running out of both because I’ve had them for almost 2 yrs, and I’ll probably just buy the same thing because they worked for me! i just hope I can find it in a store somewhere bc I forgot where I got them 😭😭
What really gets me with some makeup products sometimes is I LIKE the color and I'm drawn to it, but it never looks good on me... but I still like the COLOR 😭
Maybe use that color in your decor? Nail polish? Clothing? Or stationary? If you like the color and want to be surrounded by it, there are so many other ways to do that besides just using in your makeup, which you can't see without a mirror anyway.
I regretted the Tatcha dewy skin cream soooo much! Even worse it’s so expensive. It felt so nice on my skin but it broke me out so bad and clogged my pores. Honestly don’t know why I thought I needed a $70 moisturizer. Thankfully I gave it to my mom and it worked great for her. I don’t recommend it if you’re acne prone.
Fr I don't understand why things are so expensive these days and the cream its self isn't even that good stuff are soooooooooooooooo over rated these days like sure the packaging is AMAZING but the cream is not that good it also broke me out really badly I tried it from my friend btw. And for like 100 dollars.
It feels luxurious on the skin, but it's just a thick moisturiser. You really can get exactly the same outcome from a jar of Nivea. I also regretted spending my hard earned money on it!!!
Since I started keeping all my makeup in a small organizer, I've found that I cut down drastically on impulse purchases. If I buy a product, I have to ask myself "Is this worth the space it's taking? Will it replace something I'm not using? Do I already own something similar?" Also following panning subreddits and youtube vlogs really inspires me to finish up what I have instead of buying more.
I'm using basically the same strategies! Keeping my makeup in one tiny drawer has really helped me because not only do I not buy more because of the space but also I can see all the stuff I do own much easier. And I'm the same with panning/low consumption channels. They're so helpful, I've started being able to look at the stuff I have as opposed to the stuff I don't.
As an employee at Sephora, the lighting is exactly why I tell people to try at home with samples I'll make for them (Sephora still can do samples just not fragrance anymore) or have me put the product on, if it's not able to be a sample and see if it's truly a good product for you. Most of the time they come back and buy the products that did work, and we try again for the ones that didn't. I want the client to be happy. Irdc about the sale $$$. I'm a makeup artist through and through, the goal is to get the client their needs matched. I often tell people to get the lip treatments from Tower 28 over the Summer Friday balms. They're amazing and so much better. Better hydration, not sticky, gorgeous tints that are actually noticable, and a better price. I have every single one. The Summer Friday balms are over hyped. and T28 is $16 vs $24 for SFs
This video hit so many good points!! I have a plentiful stash of makeup stuff, especially lippies, and it's really dawned on me that makeup takes FOREVER to use up. That's really helped me to not buy stuff just because it's on sale and to not buy backups/replacements, I just have so much stuff XD The one and only thing I buy backups of is my makeup cleansers, I currently have 3 bottles of my oil cleanser because it removes all my makeup perfectly and doesn't irritate my skin (the three pack was also 50% off, so I snagged that deal asap XD) Another thing that's good to keep in mind is that just because you have space/money to buy something new, doesn't always mean you should. For example, I recently finished a whole lip oil, but didn't go out and buy another one because I still have more lip oils in my stash and I want to save my money for a future makeup purchase I really want to try.
On the topic of mismatched shades - I will ask staff to colour match me, then explicitly state to them that I’m going to pop outdoors to look at the shade in natural light and then come back to finalise my decision. Some super helpful staff members will even offer me their vanity mirror to take outside with me! It’s a little inconvenient walking in and out of the store multiple times, but I’ve never regretted it because I’ve never bought an incorrect shade since I started doing this :) 5:32
Finding content creators with similar preferences/ taste to me has helped me massively. if I buy something that someone I trust has recommended, It drastically decreases the likelihood that I will regret the purchase. I only regret products if it’s trend based/ something I’ve chosen at random. I regretted something for the first time this year a few months ago and it’s the worst feeling. I hate not using something I’ve bought.
The one time I’ve gotten shade matched at Sephora, the woman helping me actually did so good with the shade matching and told me to go outside to see if it worked. ALWAYS CHECK OUTSIDE PLEASE
I do have to say, I love buying for my ‘fantasy self’ & I use that to get me out of my comfort zone. I love red lipstick! I recently bought black lipstick & I’m obsessed!! To satisfy my shopping craving, I will go to yesstyle, sephora etc, add everything I want to cart, then stop. In a month or so, the itch will come back and I will do it again. If I really want something, I would end up adding it to cart again. I'll consider actually buying a non-essential product if I still want it after 1-2 years. If I end up still not using it much, I wouldn't feel bad because I know I would always fantasize about it if I never bought it.
I recently had my colors done, and found out that I look best in cool tones. It really helps with shade selection, and when I see beautiful warm shades that I am tempted to buy.
This. I went through my makeup the other day and saw a trend in my lip shades I used most. They were almost all some variation of the same shade just light or darker or a different format. I got rid of a bunch that I was drawn to but never picked when getting ready.

i completely agree with you in regards to products that are easier to use. i felt hard for the liquid blush trend only to realize that its such a fuss to deal with- its patchy because you need a certain technique to blend it and its so PIGMENTED (making it hard to build up). SADLY, the same thing calls for loose powders. i've been trying to use up the ones in my collection but these products last forever. both a curse and a blessing sometimes 😤💸
i bought the wrong shade of foundation and to “combat” being wasteful and not returning the light shade, i bought a darker shade to mix with it and now both shades are sitting on my vanity a year later untouched 🥴 so in the process of me trying not to be wasteful, i dropped $130 on 2 products that i will probably end up having to trash.

Also another hack while shopping for complexion products is testing it on your neck and if you have a possibility going outside or to a window to see it in daylight. I usually shop alone so i go to complexion first and go back and forth to see if it is my shade🙌🏻
I just want to share with makeup anonymous here on youtube PLEASE stop buying things just because its good. I bought the haus lab’s foundation because it seemed like an amazing product, and it is good, however…I DONT EVEN LIKE FULL COVERAGE FOUNDATION ANYMORE. I already had complexion products I loved and work perfectly for me so whyyy. Just because something is good doesn’t mean you need it, or that it is your style/taste, will suit your body type, skin color, texture ect. I know this and still did it so please, try not to get swept away in the frenzy. Now I am trying to sell an expensive bottle I’ve never tested and wasted money don’t be like me 😂
This is such a good point. I feel like the rise of shopping and makeup videos as a form of relaxation has made me shop in reverse, where instead of thinking about what I need and *then* looking for the best match for that need, I learn about and end up wanting a product before I ever even consider needing it.
My fantasy self gets a lot of sleep and does whatever she wants for however long she wants. She eats well and drinks well and stays hydrated. She also takes care of her appearance more and looks great. Her body bounced back from pregnancy and looks so fit and confident. Smh

Uh YES I DO because I 100% I’m using them every day. I love Maybelline Vinyl ink lipsticks and I have them in couple of different shades that all suit me and that I use regularly.

Great video! You really did cover every reason I have regretted buying a beauty product, which has sadly been more times than I'd like to think of. I also think it's helpful to just be honest about what happens to beauty products we don't use or want...we usually throw them out. People use the word "de-clutter" to feel better about it, but when you've used a product and had it sitting around for a considerable amount of time it's usually best to pitch it rather than hope that it's safe to give to someone else (who may not really want it, anyway). This kind of honesty does help deter me from buying excessive amounts of products or ones that are redundant to what I already have. I don't want to create unnecessary waste and throw my money away in the process!

ha! i’m the complete opposite with lipsticks! i used to try and try again with nudes but they never suited my skin tone, but a lovely pink or red is what i always come back to! i’ve given up buying nude lipsticks now😌 totally agree with difficult to use/ time consuming products too. if you aren’t going to grab it then there’s no point spending your money on it!
i think a lot of makeup lovers may have some degree of shopping addiction. whenever they're feeling down about themselves, they convince themselves the solution to their unhappiness is that YSL lipstick or rare beauty blush -- buying items in the wrong shade in the deluded hope they can somehow become that "fantasy self" with the right purchase. while i definitely believe in treating yourself occasionally, your first instinct when you feel sad or hopeless should never be to pick up your credit card.
Good point, buying things for your "fantasy self" isn't practical. But how do you differentiate between buying something for your fantasy self vs buying something to try a new thing/get out of your comfort zone? For example, I like colorful makeup and want to get into it more, but I don't do rainbow eyeshadow everyday. I do simpler/natural makeup much more often!
I think it's up to you to determine your limits! As someone who plays with makeup for fun, I personally allow SOME room for this, but I try not to go overboard. Example: In the past i've bought a few colorful palettes for the moments I want to experiment! But I don't continue buying them because I don't get much use out of it. This also allows room for me to grow and change my preferences. But other people who are more minimal or practical won't even bother. I would base it on your lifestyle and relationship with makeup!

i only buy my backups when the im running out of the original product(like a week or two left). i noticed that if i do that earlier the excitement of unpacking a new product tends to get the best of me, and then i only want to use the newer one cuz pretty shiny packaging. hope this helps!

I'm very guilty of getting backups of a product or duplicates in multiple shades. I've had so many holy grail products discontinued, though. It's a response to that lol. At least it tends to be stuff I'd realistically go through and pan, like a specific face powder or primer or mascara or lip balm. I do go through lip tints as well. Skincare too. I have some backups of things I've used for years, and I don't really try a bunch of skincare so I do use it up in time. I need to never buy eyeshadow again, I almost never wear it. I just like touching it lol
I'm really new to makeup, starting off strong with trying to consciously consume !! luckily for me I know myself and the things I already wouldn't like, which does make it easier to keep my small collection..well small.

I regretted the multiple shades thing and buying tons of backups for skincare. I remember buying two of the rare beauty lip oils and ended up hating them, and now i am stuck with a product I hate in two shades.... such a waste of money. I just have two face palettes, just the too faced one which I bought years ago, and the ND glam face palette and I only use them for travel or work, as they are quick and easy. I like everything in the ND one so I get really good use of it, not a single bit of it I do not like
This is helpful today b/c I’m trying so hard not to be influenced by all of the Lipstick Day sales. Especially Ulta’s free gifts with purchase today. I have to keep reminding myself that I rarely wear lipstick & I get grossed out by lip glosses (or anything with a wand that you apply to your mouth & put back in the tube). I mainly wear lip balms, and I already have plenty!

I used to get stuff that wasn't my shade all the time, but since I found a Fenty product I really like, I don't think I'll ever try another one. Fenty really knocked it out of the park with undertones.
i learned the hard to use / fantasy self thing pretty quick!! my routine is pretty short: i almost only ever use black shadow, i never use complexion products and rarely touch lipstick (i prefer glosses) and realizing all of that has saved me a lot of wasted product and money! :”)

This also made me realize I do have products that are finicky/messy to use that I have been avoiding. I have the nars orgasm liquid blush and its not messy per se but its just kind of inconvenient to use as i have to put it on the back of my hand first before applying, and I haven’t used it at all since I’ve gotten a cream blush that I much prefer. Such a shame cause it is a nice color but I definitely prefer something that is easier to apply
For the foundation/colour matching one, you can also swatch a bunch of shades that look like they match, write down what they are, than leave the Sephora for a bit to look at them in different lighting. You could go so far as to go home, or just hang out in your car/the mall before going back in.
Another product I wouldn't buy often are makeup brushes. You don't need expensive ones to work either, sometimes it's all about your skills in makeup and understanding of a product. I still use the same 4 morphe brushes for eyeshadow which I bought 5 years ago. I have a variety of other brushes for liquid and powder products, but I definitely won't buy a similar brush in a different brand. You shouldn't buy a brush just for a product either. You either already have a brush at home that will do the same job or you end up hating the product you bought and will rarely use it.
omg the foundation one! i recently found shades that matched me. turns out i'm olive tone. everything i had bought that i thought matched me would ultimately make me look red. but even now it's still hard to find olive shades bc i don't think not many brands have widened their range. the only times i have been able to buy my shade was at ulta. i have never been able to find my shade from drugstore brands
I bought the lightest pink shade of the fat oil slick click (02 - Clout - Soft baby pink) from Nyx, and I was so exited to wear it. I thought it would suit my completion, but my heart sank when i tried it on at home and looked in the mirror. It looked so ugly on me, and I completely hated it. It makes me so sad, because if I’ve just bought another shade, it probably would’ve been one of my favorite lip products. Now it just lies on the bottom of my makeup bag, never to be used again:(. Now, every time I see it, it just makes me feel guilty, since I wasted all my money(at the time) on a product I never use🙁
I loved this video, getting to the sales one, I do a lot of research and I know which brands and which products never go on sale and when they go on sale I get it.
my downfall are almost always mystery beauty boxes. When i open them i find a lot of strange products in color (which nobody wanted) or the 10th cleanser or fixing spray (both are very cheap to produce) or a nude lipstick for everyone, but I am not everyone. And I hate absolutely the 2 ml shisedo face cream samples etc. It doesn’t matter if it is the most expensive sample, I hate these little things.
The only one I personally disagree with is the different shades. Personally, when buying new shades of the same product, what tends to happen with me (and this is mostly with lip products), they have different purposes (school, weekend, and going out) or I prefer the new shade. For example: I had the charlotte tilbury pillowtalk mini lipstick, and I wore it daily until I bought the pillowtalk fair shade. Pillowtalk fair is an overall better shade for me as it's my natural shade and it's perfect to layer over lip liners for a different finish, but it didn’t exist at the time, and even if it did, it wasn’t in my budget at the time where the mini was. Same with the e.l.f liquid blush, I initially had the dusty rose blush, which worked really well with my pillowtalk lipstick. However, it often looks too peach with the pillowtalk fair lipstick, so I bought the shade suave mauve, which I prefer overall. I also have only one of every other product (bar eyeshadow and eyeliner (My friend got me one extra when I already owned one.)) Personally, I think different shades (or different formulas) are ok if they're for different purposes (situations or parts in a routine) that are often occurrences.
Fair points! I personally also have the same experience for certain things, especially as someone who switches my look constantly. But I’m also speaking from experience where the rule of buying in a different color doesn’t always apply. 😅
I am the same! I saw some comments saying makeup takes forever to go through and it’s comepltely true but I’ve known this and when I go on olive young they give you a lot of 2 for 1 boxes of skincare/makeup products and I actually don’t like that. I like to try a variety of products that I can without hoarding products and creating a cluttered room. That is just me though but I am so glad everyone is being more conscious about their purchasing habits. We watch influencers like Mikayla and it’s so so many products and it’s obvious over-indulgence, it’s honestly gross to me now to see vanity tours and it’s just filled with makeup that be use to probably hundreds of people…
I'm honestly just glad that my family is finally realizing that I will never use neutral lip colors, brown eyeliner, or pencil eyeliner. I will die on my hill of bold crisp eyeliner and black/purple/green/red/bright pink/every other color in the rainbow lipstick/gloss. I am very alternative in my fashion taste.
14:38 this is actually the opposite for me- I love changing up my blush! I'm currently obsessed with the tower 28 crème blush, and I have it in 3 different colors. I usually choose my blush shade based on my outfit that day. I've hit pan on 2/3 of them, and I'm close to hitting pan on the 3rd!!! but I used to be like you and only reached for one shade.
Honestly i’ve bought many bad products but I don’t regret it. It was mostly cheap, and so I could learn techniques, the colours I like on my skin, styles, etc. Did that for about 3 years and I have so many product I stopped using within a month. But now I’m finally ready to commit to better brands and more expensive make up :)
(Sorry if bad English, it's not my first language 😭) For regret #1, I agree with foundations and concealers, but for blushes and eyeshadows, no matter how much I don't like them when I look at them separately, I found that with clothes, wigs, accessories and stuffs, there are always ways to make it look nice to your preferences :D
Oh yeah, I'm lazy and very simplistic when it comes to makeup, yet I still got 4 of the Rare Beauty liquid blushes. But to be fair, I didn’t expect that they would be harder to use and soo pigmented. In the morning I tend to reach out for a blush stick or sheer cream blush and I only use the liquid blushes when I have more time to get ready. Oh well, I at least learned my lesson now
ive so been there.. i bought the tirtir cushion foundation in the wrong shade just because i wanted it while it was in stock (its a good formula, its just SO orange and i cant wear it anywhere), i bought the mac plumping gloss stick but the applicator is so impractical that i never reach for it over the much cheaper revolution plumping gloss that i have. its so annoying because i did 'research' on these products and convinced myself that i wanted/needed them, but i was just lying to myself lmfao
As someone with sensitive skin, i dont have the luxury to impulsive buy with beauty products (not i ever want it lmao) so, i research with the ingredients in that specific product and the products i use and see if it matches.
For any foundation that doesn’t match, I just use L.A. Girl mixing pigments or their colour correctors. Just mix them into the foundation until you get the right shade…no more regret buys or anxiety over the shade not matching 😊
Backups are good to buy if you are getting something you use on a daily or almost daily basis like shampoo conditioner body wash or hair mask because that has saved me money in the long-term buying a bunch of on clearance because I did that last year and I still have not had to replace my conditioner yet and it’s been amazing not having to re-buy it every few months

Here we go… i regret buying : 1. The it cosmetics cc cream natural matte- dry, cakey, crappy shade range 2. Rare beauty bronzer stick- too warm, too greasy. 3. Fenty soft matte foundation- stunning finish, but clogged my pores big time, it also oxidizes a lot. 4. Nars soft matte complete foundation- dry, accentuates dry patches. 5. Nyx on the rise mascara. Clumpy, flakey mess with a mediocre effect. 6. BEWARE OF THE FENTY LIP STAIN. Dries out the lips, clings to any texture on the lips, and the stain looks extremely bright, almost neon😭 my worst dissapointment
one really good rule of thumb whenever im trying to be financially responsible is to consider two factors 1. go away for at least over 3-5 days (ideally a week) and if you still want that product(s), then it’s usually worth buying (this only applies to irl shopping) and 2. what else can i do with that money/how many hours have i worked for this product? so if its a pricier product (perfumes, designer, tech etc. worth $250+USD), i can literally use that money to book a round trip flight ticket to go to an entire new country. it’s usually very effective in stopping me from over consuming lol, i just think ‘i could literally backpack around europe with that (cumulative) amount’ (stopped me from buying a new iphone when i have a perfectly functioning one, expensive clothes and makeup, expensive food, luxury goods etc.)
My worst habit is buying because it’s on so. I had an unhealthy relationship with makeup, before it was clothes, before that was shoes (didn’t wear 90% of what I bought!) but now it’s perfume - I can’t seem not to have a vice.
This might be obvious, but replacing shopping with a hobby that you enjoy more could help! I’ve found reading, play games, walks, etc has been helpful for me.
I haven’t bought a beauty product in a year, my makeup routine is a mascara and a lip balm and eyeliner if I’m feeling fancy, I have one all purpose healing cream for the night and a day cream that’s a moisturizer and spf for the morning and I use the home made soap for my face . But did I watch the whole video ? Hell yeah I like watching videos while studying and your video is very soothing and maybe when I have the time and money for makeup and skin care I’ll use your advice for sure.

Remember that all these products are appealing to the eye, but plainer and cheaper substitutes work just as well and can even last longer.

I always research ingredients in anything that goes on my face! I'm oily and breakout prone, so there is no way I could just pick up whatever and slap it on without anxiety! I did impulse buy Alastin A-Luminate Brightening Serum. Those of you familiar with that brand you know how expensive it is. It's still sitting in my cabinet. I was bummed. My skin doesn't like something in it. I usually NEVER play with skincare, and that is why. Always get on an ingredient finder site to make sure your skin will be more likely to respond in a way that you won't want to put a pillow case over your head! One thing I don't understand is the people who buy 200.00 retinol when you can get Tretinoin (gold standard in skincare) for maybe 40.00 with insurance and usually 78.00 tops without. You don't even need to go to a dermatologist. There are online providers that will prescribe and mail you effective skincare. It's been a huge money saver and I get results!!!
This is why dupes are not my favorite. I think they’re only great if you don’t plan on ever buying the high-end version or want to try before committing (bc that’s when you truly save money)!
I relate to number 1 so much. I got a tower28 concealer in the totally wrong shade, way too dark and all the concealers dont fit my tone and were too warm (olive tone girlie sob) so I bought it and ended up throwing it out bc I just couldn’t use it. Nobody I know who wears makeup is that tone, so while I hate to have wasted it, I kinda had no choice. And #3/#4 makes total sense, so what I do to try to make sure I’m not buying smth just for trends or getting a certain look is to try it in store/wait on it a little b4 buying. Stopped myself from buying viral halo glow that way bc I found my skin reacted poorly to it and again, there was no shade that matched me well
I feel you as an olive toned girlie who just started wearing makeup and hasn’t found the perfect shade match yet. You can try mixing with colour correcting concealers or green primer next time you end up with a shade that doesn’t match - that way it’s not wasted :)

I feel you. I’m living that fear right now. I went into a deep depression and stopped caring for my appearance at all when I came out of it all my makeup was several years expired. I was low on my two favorite perfumes when I went in. When I came out both of my favorite perfumes have been discontinued, and a totally different profile is currently popular, so I can’t even find anything similar. I’m not into the clean/soap and vanilla scents that are everywhere right now. I’ve spent more time than I care to admit on Fragrantica trying to pin down what the profiles I like are so I at least have a starting point to look for a replacement. It sucks so hard. I’m basically having to start over entirely, and I’m honestly considering giving up. I really wish I bought like 6 of them when I had the chance, as I wore them every day. It was the one thing I splurged on, and the current lineup most designers have are a huge letdown.
But for most products, I feel like they’re pretty interchangeable. I can find a different eyeliner. Black is always available. I can find new eyeshadow - neutral tones have staying power. Or lipstick. Red and berry tones are always findable. I can find a different blush, since brick reds are always around. I might even get tired of mine and be interested in a change. If it’s technique based you’ll probably be able to find something that works for you in the event of a discontinuation.
Never thought of the concept of having a “fantasy self” but this made me realize that I definitely buy for a “fantasy self” that would love bold lips or bright liners/blushes and neverrrr use it lol I definitely need to spotlight that part of my spending and stop while I’m ahead 🤣💸

I wanna add to this and say even if you loved something in the past, I loved to wear bright unusual color lipstick and eyeshadow when I was younger; it doesn’t mean you have to force yourself to do it or hold on to your past self if you just aren’t into that anymore. I am currently trying to come to terms with this and let go of this idea that I need a lime green eyeshadow (that I don’t want to wear anymore) to be a cool girl still.

Being an older person, I really miss having things like Avon samples to actually try for a week or so without committing. Those teeny lipstick samples were amazing. I’ve become a trial size first buyer. I’d rather pay a little more per unit for a small amount instead of buying larger more expensive options and feeling obligated to that choice. Hi! If you have a Sephora or a Dept Store near you, you can ask for a sample of different items. My Bobbie Brown counter always makes me up a sample on the spot (most of the time in a tiny jar or container). Very helpful. PS: I'm 52 and remember those fantastic tiny lipstick samples. ❤💋
We still have Avon in Italy, I love them!! The problem is that they are not “tik tok “ worth .. but their products are really good and you get the chances to try them

Some places still give out samples. I was looking for a foundation and couldn't find my shade and I went to a big beauty store (I'm in the UK) and I asked for samples the lady was amazing she tried to match me and gave me 3 and told me to check them in daylight. She also gave me a few other samples too. She was lovely I was with her for an hour didn't buy anything but left with good advice and went back the next week and brought my correct shade from her
As a person who has worked in cosmetic sales for years. ANY TIME I did a shade match I would walk my guests over to big windows or even ask them to walk outside to look and pick a shade. And yes! Make a note in your phone your perfect shade of foundation you love. So easy to compare side by side in store if you can’t, or don’t want help.
I’ve never experienced this. They’re usually pretty quick in their shade matching. I have since learned how to shade match myself. 😅
THIS!! Wear it out. See how it looks and make a decision when you’re comfy. I’m ungodly pale and I turn to a tan during summer but go back to pale in winter. I keep a bottle of a deeper tone that suits my tan (once I get to a certain shade I don’t tan much more somehow and I’ve never gotten burnt) and I get one that’s the palest and I just mix the two because one month I’m one color and one month I’m another. It’s just better for me to use my two then buy one of every tone between 💀
I suffer from buyers remorse so often and you make a ton of great points. You really have to be realistic when shopping otherwise you're just pouring money down the drain..

This is a valid point that isn’t noted often! I personally layer them because it helps with longevity + it’s fun for me to mix colors. But on days when I’m in a rush, I only use one or the other.

I bought a really cute purple/pink eyeshadow palette from rom&nd, I don’t use it regularly but it’s always there when I want a more colorful look for special events :D my other palette is a little square of neutral browns and a single eyeshadow that’s a nice coral (?) color. I’m running out of both because I’ve had them for almost 2 yrs, and I’ll probably just buy the same thing because they worked for me! i just hope I can find it in a store somewhere bc I forgot where I got them 😭😭
What really gets me with some makeup products sometimes is I LIKE the color and I'm drawn to it, but it never looks good on me... but I still like the COLOR 😭
Maybe use that color in your decor? Nail polish? Clothing? Or stationary? If you like the color and want to be surrounded by it, there are so many other ways to do that besides just using in your makeup, which you can't see without a mirror anyway.

I regretted the Tatcha dewy skin cream soooo much! Even worse it’s so expensive. It felt so nice on my skin but it broke me out so bad and clogged my pores. Honestly don’t know why I thought I needed a $70 moisturizer. Thankfully I gave it to my mom and it worked great for her. I don’t recommend it if you’re acne prone.
I’ve had a mini of the Tatcha Dewy Skin cream and had a similar experience. 😅
Fr I don't understand why things are so expensive these days and the cream its self isn't even that good stuff are soooooooooooooooo over rated these days like sure the packaging is AMAZING but the cream is not that good it also broke me out really badly I tried it from my friend btw. And for like 100 dollars.
It feels luxurious on the skin, but it's just a thick moisturiser. You really can get exactly the same outcome from a jar of Nivea. I also regretted spending my hard earned money on it!!!

Since I started keeping all my makeup in a small organizer, I've found that I cut down drastically on impulse purchases. If I buy a product, I have to ask myself "Is this worth the space it's taking? Will it replace something I'm not using? Do I already own something similar?"
Also following panning subreddits and youtube vlogs really inspires me to finish up what I have instead of buying more.
I'm using basically the same strategies! Keeping my makeup in one tiny drawer has really helped me because not only do I not buy more because of the space but also I can see all the stuff I do own much easier. And I'm the same with panning/low consumption channels. They're so helpful, I've started being able to look at the stuff I have as opposed to the stuff I don't.
As an employee at Sephora, the lighting is exactly why I tell people to try at home with samples I'll make for them (Sephora still can do samples just not fragrance anymore) or have me put the product on, if it's not able to be a sample and see if it's truly a good product for you. Most of the time they come back and buy the products that did work, and we try again for the ones that didn't. I want the client to be happy. Irdc about the sale $$$. I'm a makeup artist through and through, the goal is to get the client their needs matched. I often tell people to get the lip treatments from Tower 28 over the Summer Friday balms. They're amazing and so much better. Better hydration, not sticky, gorgeous tints that are actually noticable, and a better price. I have every single one. The Summer Friday balms are over hyped. and T28 is $16 vs $24 for SFs

This video hit so many good points!! I have a plentiful stash of makeup stuff, especially lippies, and it's really dawned on me that makeup takes FOREVER to use up. That's really helped me to not buy stuff just because it's on sale and to not buy backups/replacements, I just have so much stuff XD
The one and only thing I buy backups of is my makeup cleansers, I currently have 3 bottles of my oil cleanser because it removes all my makeup perfectly and doesn't irritate my skin (the three pack was also 50% off, so I snagged that deal asap XD)
Another thing that's good to keep in mind is that just because you have space/money to buy something new, doesn't always mean you should. For example, I recently finished a whole lip oil, but didn't go out and buy another one because I still have more lip oils in my stash and I want to save my money for a future makeup purchase I really want to try.

On the topic of mismatched shades - I will ask staff to colour match me, then explicitly state to them that I’m going to pop outdoors to look at the shade in natural light and then come back to finalise my decision. Some super helpful staff members will even offer me their vanity mirror to take outside with me! It’s a little inconvenient walking in and out of the store multiple times, but I’ve never regretted it because I’ve never bought an incorrect shade since I started doing this :) 5:32

Finding content creators with similar preferences/ taste to me has helped me massively. if I buy something that someone I trust has recommended, It drastically decreases the likelihood that I will regret the purchase. I only regret products if it’s trend based/ something I’ve chosen at random. I regretted something for the first time this year a few months ago and it’s the worst feeling. I hate not using something I’ve bought.
And price point 😅 I mean I watch more expensive creators but also searching specifically for my actual price point helps me too

To satisfy my shopping craving, I will go to yesstyle, sephora etc, add everything I want to cart, then stop. In a month or so, the itch will come back and I will do it again.
If I really want something, I would end up adding it to cart again. I'll consider actually buying a non-essential product if I still want it after 1-2 years. If I end up still not using it much, I wouldn't feel bad because I know I would always fantasize about it if I never bought it.
I recently had my colors done, and found out that I look best in cool tones. It really helps with shade selection, and when I see beautiful warm shades that I am tempted to buy.
This. I went through my makeup the other day and saw a trend in my lip shades I used most. They were almost all some variation of the same shade just light or darker or a different format. I got rid of a bunch that I was drawn to but never picked when getting ready.

i completely agree with you in regards to products that are easier to use. i felt hard for the liquid blush trend only to realize that its such a fuss to deal with- its patchy because you need a certain technique to blend it and its so PIGMENTED (making it hard to build up). SADLY, the same thing calls for loose powders. i've been trying to use up the ones in my collection but these products last forever. both a curse and a blessing sometimes 😤💸

i bought the wrong shade of foundation and to “combat” being wasteful and not returning the light shade, i bought a darker shade to mix with it and now both shades are sitting on my vanity a year later untouched 🥴 so in the process of me trying not to be wasteful, i dropped $130 on 2 products that i will probably end up having to trash.

I just want to share with makeup anonymous here on youtube PLEASE stop buying things just because its good. I bought the haus lab’s foundation because it seemed like an amazing product, and it is good, however…I DONT EVEN LIKE FULL COVERAGE FOUNDATION ANYMORE. I already had complexion products I loved and work perfectly for me so whyyy. Just because something is good doesn’t mean you need it, or that it is your style/taste, will suit your body type, skin color, texture ect. I know this and still did it so please, try not to get swept away in the frenzy. Now I am trying to sell an expensive bottle I’ve never tested and wasted money don’t be like me 😂

My fantasy self gets a lot of sleep and does whatever she wants for however long she wants. She eats well and drinks well and stays hydrated.

Great video! You really did cover every reason I have regretted buying a beauty product, which has sadly been more times than I'd like to think of. I also think it's helpful to just be honest about what happens to beauty products we don't use or want...we usually throw them out. People use the word "de-clutter" to feel better about it, but when you've used a product and had it sitting around for a considerable amount of time it's usually best to pitch it rather than hope that it's safe to give to someone else (who may not really want it, anyway). This kind of honesty does help deter me from buying excessive amounts of products or ones that are redundant to what I already have. I don't want to create unnecessary waste and throw my money away in the process!

i think a lot of makeup lovers may have some degree of shopping addiction. whenever they're feeling down about themselves, they convince themselves the solution to their unhappiness is that YSL lipstick or rare beauty blush -- buying items in the wrong shade in the deluded hope they can somehow become that "fantasy self" with the right purchase. while i definitely believe in treating yourself occasionally, your first instinct when you feel sad or hopeless should never be to pick up your credit card.

Good point, buying things for your "fantasy self" isn't practical. But how do you differentiate between buying something for your fantasy self vs buying something to try a new thing/get out of your comfort zone?
For example, I like colorful makeup and want to get into it more, but I don't do rainbow eyeshadow everyday. I do simpler/natural makeup much more often!
I think it's up to you to determine your limits!
As someone who plays with makeup for fun, I personally allow SOME room for this, but I try not to go overboard. Example: In the past i've bought a few colorful palettes for the moments I want to experiment! But I don't continue buying them because I don't get much use out of it. This also allows room for me to grow and change my preferences.
But other people who are more minimal or practical won't even bother. I would base it on your lifestyle and relationship with makeup!

i only buy my backups when the im running out of the original product(like a week or two left). i noticed that if i do that earlier the excitement of unpacking a new product tends to get the best of me, and then i only want to use the newer one cuz pretty shiny packaging. hope this helps!

I'm very guilty of getting backups of a product or duplicates in multiple shades. I've had so many holy grail products discontinued, though. It's a response to that lol. At least it tends to be stuff I'd realistically go through and pan, like a specific face powder or primer or mascara or lip balm. I do go through lip tints as well. Skincare too. I have some backups of things I've used for years, and I don't really try a bunch of skincare so I do use it up in time.

I regretted the multiple shades thing and buying tons of backups for skincare. I remember buying two of the rare beauty lip oils and ended up hating them, and now i am stuck with a product I hate in two shades.... such a waste of money. I just have two face palettes, just the too faced one which I bought years ago, and the ND glam face palette and I only use them for travel or work, as they are quick and easy. I like everything in the ND one so I get really good use of it, not a single bit of it I do not like

This is helpful today b/c I’m trying so hard not to be influenced by all of the Lipstick Day sales. Especially Ulta’s free gifts with purchase today. I have to keep reminding myself that I rarely wear lipstick & I get grossed out by lip glosses (or anything with a wand that you apply to your mouth & put back in the tube). I mainly wear lip balms, and I already have plenty!

I used to get stuff that wasn't my shade all the time, but since I found a Fenty product I really like, I don't think I'll ever try another one. Fenty really knocked it out of the park with undertones.
i learned the hard to use / fantasy self thing pretty quick!! my routine is pretty short: i almost only ever use black shadow, i never use complexion products and rarely touch lipstick (i prefer glosses) and realizing all of that has saved me a lot of wasted product and money! :”)

This also made me realize I do have products that are finicky/messy to use that I have been avoiding. I have the nars orgasm liquid blush and its not messy per se but its just kind of inconvenient to use as i have to put it on the back of my hand first before applying, and I haven’t used it at all since I’ve gotten a cream blush that I much prefer. Such a shame cause it is a nice color but I definitely prefer something that is easier to apply
Would using a makeup palette get you to use it more? I’ve been feeling this way about loose powder lately. 😭
For the foundation/colour matching one, you can also swatch a bunch of shades that look like they match, write down what they are, than leave the Sephora for a bit to look at them in different lighting. You could go so far as to go home, or just hang out in your car/the mall before going back in.
Another product I wouldn't buy often are makeup brushes. You don't need expensive ones to work either, sometimes it's all about your skills in makeup and understanding of a product. I still use the same 4 morphe brushes for eyeshadow which I bought 5 years ago. I have a variety of other brushes for liquid and powder products, but I definitely won't buy a similar brush in a different brand. You shouldn't buy a brush just for a product either. You either already have a brush at home that will do the same job or you end up hating the product you bought and will rarely use it.

omg the foundation one! i recently found shades that matched me. turns out i'm olive tone. everything i had bought that i thought matched me would ultimately make me look red. but even now it's still hard to find olive shades bc i don't think not many brands have widened their range. the only times i have been able to buy my shade was at ulta. i have never been able to find my shade from drugstore brands
I bought the lightest pink shade of the fat oil slick click (02 - Clout - Soft baby pink) from Nyx, and I was so exited to wear it. I thought it would suit my completion, but my heart sank when i tried it on at home and looked in the mirror. It looked so ugly on me, and I completely hated it. It makes me so sad, because if I’ve just bought another shade, it probably would’ve been one of my favorite lip products. Now it just lies on the bottom of my makeup bag, never to be used again:(. Now, every time I see it, it just makes me feel guilty, since I wasted all my money(at the time) on a product I never use🙁

my downfall are almost always mystery beauty boxes. When i open them i find a lot of strange products in color (which nobody wanted) or the 10th cleanser or fixing spray (both are very cheap to produce) or a nude lipstick for everyone, but I am not everyone. And I hate absolutely the 2 ml shisedo face cream samples etc. It doesn’t matter if it is the most expensive sample, I hate these little things.
Mystery boxes are a big no for me, I like to know what I'm buying!
The only one I personally disagree with is the different shades. Personally, when buying new shades of the same product, what tends to happen with me (and this is mostly with lip products), they have different purposes (school, weekend, and going out) or I prefer the new shade. For example: I had the charlotte tilbury pillowtalk mini lipstick, and I wore it daily until I bought the pillowtalk fair shade. Pillowtalk fair is an overall better shade for me as it's my natural shade and it's perfect to layer over lip liners for a different finish, but it didn’t exist at the time, and even if it did, it wasn’t in my budget at the time where the mini was. Same with the e.l.f liquid blush, I initially had the dusty rose blush, which worked really well with my pillowtalk lipstick. However, it often looks too peach with the pillowtalk fair lipstick, so I bought the shade suave mauve, which I prefer overall. I also have only one of every other product (bar eyeshadow and eyeliner (My friend got me one extra when I already owned one.)) Personally, I think different shades (or different formulas) are ok if they're for different purposes (situations or parts in a routine) that are often occurrences.
Fair points! I personally also have the same experience for certain things, especially as someone who switches my look constantly. But I’m also speaking from experience where the rule of buying in a different color doesn’t always apply. 😅
I am the same! I saw some comments saying makeup takes forever to go through and it’s comepltely true but I’ve known this and when I go on olive young they give you a lot of 2 for 1 boxes of skincare/makeup products and I actually don’t like that. I like to try a variety of products that I can without hoarding products and creating a cluttered room. That is just me though but I am so glad everyone is being more conscious about their purchasing habits.
We watch influencers like Mikayla and it’s so so many products and it’s obvious over-indulgence, it’s honestly gross to me now to see vanity tours and it’s just filled with makeup that be use to probably hundreds of people…
I'm honestly just glad that my family is finally realizing that I will never use neutral lip colors, brown eyeliner, or pencil eyeliner. I will die on my hill of bold crisp eyeliner and black/purple/green/red/bright pink/every other color in the rainbow lipstick/gloss. I am very alternative in my fashion taste.
14:38 this is actually the opposite for me- I love changing up my blush! I'm currently obsessed with the tower 28 crème blush, and I have it in 3 different colors. I usually choose my blush shade based on my outfit that day. I've hit pan on 2/3 of them, and I'm close to hitting pan on the 3rd!!! but I used to be like you and only reached for one shade.
Honestly i’ve bought many bad products but I don’t regret it. It was mostly cheap, and so I could learn techniques, the colours I like on my skin, styles, etc. Did that for about 3 years and I have so many product I stopped using within a month. But now I’m finally ready to commit to better brands and more expensive make up :)
I think we all go through that phase - it helps to learn what we like!
(Sorry if bad English, it's not my first language 😭) For regret #1, I agree with foundations and concealers, but for blushes and eyeshadows, no matter how much I don't like them when I look at them separately, I found that with clothes, wigs, accessories and stuffs, there are always ways to make it look nice to your preferences :D

Oh yeah, I'm lazy and very simplistic when it comes to makeup, yet I still got 4 of the Rare Beauty liquid blushes. But to be fair, I didn’t expect that they would be harder to use and soo pigmented. In the morning I tend to reach out for a blush stick or sheer cream blush and I only use the liquid blushes when I have more time to get ready. Oh well, I at least learned my lesson now

ive so been there.. i bought the tirtir cushion foundation in the wrong shade just because i wanted it while it was in stock (its a good formula, its just SO orange and i cant wear it anywhere), i bought the mac plumping gloss stick but the applicator is so impractical that i never reach for it over the much cheaper revolution plumping gloss that i have. its so annoying because i did 'research' on these products and convinced myself that i wanted/needed them, but i was just lying to myself lmfao
As someone with sensitive skin, i dont have the luxury to impulsive buy with beauty products (not i ever want it lmao) so, i research with the ingredients in that specific product and the products i use and see if it matches.
For any foundation that doesn’t match, I just use L.A. Girl mixing pigments or their colour correctors. Just mix them into the foundation until you get the right shade…no more regret buys or anxiety over the shade not matching 😊

Backups are good to buy if you are getting something you use on a daily or almost daily basis like shampoo conditioner body wash or hair mask because that has saved me money in the long-term buying a bunch of on clearance because I did that last year and I still have not had to replace my conditioner yet and it’s been amazing not having to re-buy it every few months
but all your points in your videos never miss!! keep up the great content ❤ tbh tho, most of my favorite purchases were somewhat impulsive… i work at target in the beauty section so ill see things and then buy them like on my break💀 im NOT saying this is a good idea because financially i have so many regrets but i don’t often dislike the makeup ive bought 💪💪

Here we go… i regret buying : 1. The it cosmetics cc cream natural matte- dry, cakey, crappy shade range 2. Rare beauty bronzer stick- too warm, too greasy. 3. Fenty soft matte foundation- stunning finish, but clogged my pores big time, it also oxidizes a lot. 4. Nars soft matte complete foundation- dry, accentuates dry patches. 5. Nyx on the rise mascara. Clumpy, flakey mess with a mediocre effect. 6. BEWARE OF THE FENTY LIP STAIN. Dries out the lips, clings to any texture on the lips, and the stain looks extremely bright, almost neon😭 my worst dissapointment
one really good rule of thumb whenever im trying to be financially responsible is to consider two factors
1. go away for at least over 3-5 days (ideally a week) and if you still want that product(s), then it’s usually worth buying (this only applies to irl shopping) and
2. what else can i do with that money/how many hours have i worked for this product? so if its a pricier product (perfumes, designer, tech etc. worth $250+USD), i can literally use that money to book a round trip flight ticket to go to an entire new country. it’s usually very effective in stopping me from over consuming lol, i just think ‘i could literally backpack around europe with that (cumulative) amount’ (stopped me from buying a new iphone when i have a perfectly functioning one, expensive clothes and makeup, expensive food, luxury goods etc.)
My worst habit is buying because it’s on so. I had an unhealthy relationship with makeup, before it was clothes, before that was shoes (didn’t wear 90% of what I bought!) but now it’s perfume - I can’t seem not to have a vice.
This might be obvious, but replacing shopping with a hobby that you enjoy more could help! I’ve found reading, play games, walks, etc has been helpful for me.

I haven’t bought a beauty product in a year, my makeup routine is a mascara and a lip balm and eyeliner if I’m feeling fancy, I have one all purpose healing cream for the night and a day cream that’s a moisturizer and spf for the morning and I use the home made soap for my face .

All of them. It's the packaging that's beautiful and that's the only reason I want it all.'' Remember that all these products are appealing to the eye, but plainer and cheaper substitutes work just as well and can even last longer.
You know. This week, I had a large paycheck and basically went ham - 1K - on products because my friends started getting into beauty products. Now, your video reaches me and I have shared many of these thoughts. Thankfully, I caught this video on time and am not hoarding anything or thinking about buying more. I always research ingredients in anything that goes on my face! I'm oily and breakout prone, so there is no way I could just pick up whatever and slap it on without anxiety! I did impulse buy Alastin A-Luminate Brightening Serum. Those of you familiar with that brand you know how expensive it is. It's still sitting in my cabinet. I was bummed. My skin doesn't like something in it. I usually NEVER play with skincare, and that is why. Always get on an ingredient finder site to make sure your skin will be more likely to respond in a way that you won't want to put a pillow case over your head! One thing I don't understand is the people who buy 200.00 retinol when you can get Tretinoin (gold standard in skincare) for maybe 40.00 with insurance and usually 78.00 tops without. You don't even need to go to a dermatologist. There are online providers that will prescribe and mail you effective skincare. It's been a huge money saver and I get results!!!

I relate to number 1 so much. I got a tower28 concealer in the totally wrong shade, way too dark and all the concealers dont fit my tone and were too warm (olive tone girlie sob) so I bought it and ended up throwing it out bc I just couldn’t use it. Nobody I know who wears makeup is that tone, so while I hate to have wasted it, I kinda had no choice. And #3/#4 makes total sense, so what I do to try to make sure I’m not buying smth just for trends or getting a certain look is to try it in store/wait on it a little b4 buying. Stopped myself from buying viral halo glow that way bc I found my skin reacted poorly to it and again, there was no shade that matched me well
I feel you as an olive toned girlie who just started wearing makeup and hasn’t found the perfect shade match yet. You can try mixing with colour correcting concealers or green primer next time you end up with a shade that doesn’t match - that way it’s not wasted :)
Yes, shades play a huge role in if you like a product. If it’s a bad shade, I can’t even enjoy the formula. 😭
