  • Chuck shows you how to get a Smooth Two-Color Inlay 3D Print Using CURA Z Hop. This method gives you a flush flat top surface or inlay on a single nozzle 3D printer. Chuck shows you all the steps to make it easy to implement on any 3D printer though he shows in on his low-cost Creality Ender 3. The secret is the Z- Hop setting in the Cura Slicer.

What an amazing, simple and free method to enable multicolor printing, without resorting to an expensive add-on device! I've been a long time 'listener', and finally subscribed! You put out simple, clear, easy to understand videos. I really appreciate that you take the time to work through the myriad issues we face as 3D print Makers; it has certainly helped me avoid or reduce the troubleshooting time involved with printing. Kudos, Chuck!

If anybody needs to print something that isn't centered, draw concentric squares around your items (e.g. in TinkerCad).
For instance, put a 100mm "square" (just a .4mm outline, .2mm high) around one item, then put a 99mm square around your 2nd item, and a 98mm square around your third.
Export these thin squares as part of the .STL for each color you're using, so that each one is only printed once by one color. If you print the item with the smallest square first, you're less likely to have problems with the print head crashing (b/c the outer layers will z-hop appropriately)
This allows you to center .STLs in Cura. Everything will line up perfectly, and you'll have a "skirt" built in to each color to help purge the filament colors as well!

I didn't know about Z-Hop. that's very interesting. I just now finished putting my Ender 3 Pro together during the night. I'm looking at many videos and I hope to make my first test prints soon. I made one change in the Power Supply location. It was designed to be less than 1/4" from the heated bed. I didn't like the very small clearance that presented. Looking from the front, at the Extrusion as designed, there are 2 power supply mounting holes to be on the left side. Turn it 180° so the holes are on the right side of the Extrusion instead. That gives you 3/4" more clearance for the bed to pass. Some glass plates are a bit larger than the original design allowed.
(Power Supply location comments were added/edited in later)
