    Good video, thanks! The power button/volume button ribbon to the motherboard was glued down very very tightly on mine and I ripped it even though I was very very slow and careful. Best thing would be to heat up the area with a heat gun/blow dryer to loosen that adhesive before trying to lift the cable around the volume button.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yea, you're right. It's not very clear in the video. You are not suppesed to pry under the battery, but the copper shield instead. Also the dining knife I used isn't sharp at all, so it was fine for me.
    I'll see if I can add a note to the video.
    Thanks for pointing out.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're more likely to rip off power button ribon cable if you don't use sharp blade. That adhesive is too strong to just pull the cable. I've done quiet a few replacements with no accidents. If you are not confident doing that on yuor own, just have a professional tech doing it for you.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It might work. If not, you'd have to get a new ribbon cable ($5 on eBay) and re-solder it - not the easiest job...
    Try to put everything back together without closing the screen, just connect all parts and turn on iPod. Hopefully it'll work.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It depends if you had repair experience before. This is probably the hardest one I've done so far. Without prior experience it's 8 out of 10, but you can do it. Just take your time and be extremely careful.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try to sell it on Ebay. Just describe exactly what happened, include every single part you have and post a few pictures - and some repair guy might buy it for parts. Non working iPod Touch 4th goes for ~ $40.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It will be not cheap for sure. Call and ask them how much it will cost. Then try local repair store as well. It might worth to sell it as is for parts on Ebay and get a new or used iPod. Just shop around.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's bad, man. The cable itself is $2-5. But you'll have to solder it the motherboard. You may need special soldering iron for that (~ $20) Look for the video tutorial on how to do that on TH-cam.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most likely yes. Even a small dent may not allow LCD screen to seat in place properly. If you try too hard to fit it in place, it'll crack.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    US. It will be cheaper if you find some local repair store. With parts and shipping it'll be around $80.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    How in the world did you manage to break it? The metal is pretty strong... It usualy bends, not breaks.

  • @DIYtime
    @DIYtime  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you got your screen trashed and back housing is bent - you have no choice but replace both.

    it takes more than 20 seconds to change the screen, more like 30 minutes. Trust me, I've replaced a couple of iphone screens

  • @fictionatemykarma

    Good video EXCEPT, I now need to replace the battery, because the battery has dents and one slight puncture all along the edge, from being pried up by a knife like in your video, which makes no mention about how soft the battery is. Also the copper shield is scored badly too. And I reheated the cover again just before detaching the battery. It might be better to use a flexible tool instead, which can flex around the battery's edge to pry away the battery/copper shield from the back cover.

    Thanks for posting this vid, it helped alot. The only thing I would add to the instructions is I found it not necessary to remove the center camera and wifi antenna. The only problem I had was I got a small tear in the flex cable near the lower volume button. That's the only thing that doesn't function now on my ipod. You really need to be Careful. Now I know what a surgeon must feel like. Thanks again.
    By the way this took me about 5 hours to complete successfully.

  • @lupham1
    @lupham1 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could just buy another ribbon for $5 on eBay and de-solder and solder on the new one like I did. I had a cheap soldering iron so it was rather difficult to melt the solder precisely. I ended up messing up the connection somehow so that the up button is always in a pressed-in state (not physical button but the soldering I think). I just set Activator to ignore all volume button presses.

  • @frauup
    @frauup 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. well I got as far as the last bit of ribbon, the part where you said to "go slowly and take your time", and I did - but I noticed a small tear. I wonder if I should just stop here or put it all back together to see if it works. I was in the process of replacing front & back + rear camera. think it will it work still?

    if your having trouble closing the iPod after the repair, i think its best to not move the white plastic piece into the new rear housing. I think it elevates the screen which is why it may not pop into place for you. I don't think it has any impact on the functionality of the iPod.

    • @DIYtime
      @DIYtime  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely doesn't affect functionality.
      Did you use glue instead, cuz this white adhesive kinda holds screen in place?

    I peeled the power/volume ribbon directly (not from the metal plate below it -- didn't even know that existed) and ripped it. Good video, but I think something more than "take your time" would save some people's devices.

    • @DIYtime
      @DIYtime  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, that's all I did. I did it very very slowly and carefully. It took me forever, but it worked. (I trimmed the whole process from 20 min to 1 min in the video). The only extra thing you could do is to heat it up with hair blower to loosen the adhesive.

    • @lorenzovanhethul1355
      @lorenzovanhethul1355 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing more than take your time is think and watch tutorials before doing it by yourself, i destroyed my first iPod Touch 4g with it :P

    • @TrevoPhD
      @TrevoPhD 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to get it working in the end, but with a new board I found that with removing the ribbon cable, there is a very thin metal strip under neath it, and you can remove the cable much faster and very easily if you push from under that.

    I have a I pod touch 4g, that I replaced the back housing and lcd screen. when I tried a test run the everything worked except the camera and the screen had a light white flashing to it. what do you recommend?

    • @DIYtime
      @DIYtime  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally, you wanna test everything before putting it all together. Make sure you snapped in camera ribbon cable properly. If still doesn't work, you can get replacement part for few bucks online. If still doesn't work - it might mean you have broken connector on motherboard.

    • @mrcaliswag91
      @mrcaliswag91 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      okay. do you fix I pods? how much would a rough estimate cost be?

    • @DIYtime
      @DIYtime  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually try to keep the old cracked screen until I'm finished with repair. If new screen doesn't work, I connect the old one and it usually works fine. Than it means you've got defective replacement part and you need to return it. It happens a lot, especially if I buy the cheapest ones out there.

    • @mrcaliswag91
      @mrcaliswag91 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there are some scratches on the copper cover of the battery from taking it out of the back housing, would that be a problem? I just dissembled the whole thing just now lol

    • @mrcaliswag91
      @mrcaliswag91 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      the reason I say this because maybe the battery was damaged when I took it apart, perhaps?
