Your tutorial is spot on, very nicely done. I however have a question right where you ended. On my son's IPod there are 2 pretty good size dents in the metal frame. One is by the lower volume buttom and the other is about a 1/4" above the top volume button. The dents were so bad it shattered the screen. How can I get the dents out and deal with the volume buttons?
I laid my iPod down on a counter that I didn't realize was soaked in water, and water got into the charging port. The iPod functioned just fine, but it could no longer charge for whatever reason. I haven't used that iPod since, which was probably two years ago. I found that iPod in one of my drawers the other day and decided to try and resurrect it. Is this repairable, or am I just out of luck?
Kurt for me I always play with it one day I just want to charge it but it didn't for idk reason and today my mom found it and we try to recharge it but it didn't
@Chavaan1 - It's likely you didn't connect the display cable back properly or that that cable is also torn. The cable is not a sticker. If it tears, it will have to be replaced.
@floopdiddy - The plastic cosmetic buttons aren't attached. You can remove the actual buttons (the ones responsible for the actual clicking) from the cable.
Right, I understand that and is what I'm trying to do. How do I separate the metal case and the motherboard/volume ribbon cable so I can hammer the 2 dents out?
Hi, I have an iPod touch 4th gen. I recently had water damage occur to it, however was about to absorb most of the water out with the old rice trick . but today I realized, my external speakers are not working anymore. I was wondering if you had a tutorial on how to fix the speaks or know how to .
thanks for the guide, will be sure to take note, if anything on my ipod/ and other device breaks. On the ipod touch 4g subject, it makes me happy to know that the head phone jack is extremely easy to replace if it gets damaged. (unlike the older versions that have it soldered on.)
hey PowerbookMedic! i dropped my ipod touch 4th gen and cracked the screen today.. if i bought a screen digitizer replacement should i follow the step up till 1:36 ? and to assemble it back just do it in reverse? THANKS FOR UR HELP IN ADVANCE!
Hello, I just recently repaired my iPodTouch 4! The only question I have before I glue it back together is: Though I don't see it in your video, when I open my iPod, there is a metal piece at the top right of the iPod, just beneath the LCD. In other videos, people take this metal piece out, put it to the side, but don't replace it. Is it a necessary part to replace? I am thinking it's use is for the adhesive and nothing else...any thoughts?
hello, ty for step by stepinstructions they were great. so my problem is when i turn on ipod u cant see the screen at all so i took apart following ur directions carefully and reattached the cables and still i can not see the screen but if i carefully press on the screen u can see it for a few seconds any ideas whats wrong or how to fix? apple wont fix it because it has small crack in screen.
I'm in the process of taking apart my ipod touch 4g and while doing that I think I might have damaged some of the components around the digitizer cable, and on the logic board. What would I have to do to send it to your website to get replaced and is there anyway that you could give me an estimate over the phone on how much it would cost to replace?
I came across an odd event when I dropped a dc motor onto my touch 4g. It sparked when it hit and looks like it arced out of the bottom of the iPod. Now my Pod turns on and when I plug in the charging cable it autostarts but won't charge back up. I'm wondering whether this would be the port or logic board that needs replacing? Thanks for the tutorial. Rob
About to help a friend tackle this. Just one question, are all the small Philips screw inside it the same or different for each part it comes off of, like some longer or shorter. Thanks!
@PowerbookMedic Could you make a complete video of the ipod touch disassembly and how to change the back panel and finally assembly? PLEASEEE I really need this
what type of flat tool do you recommend? what is the name of the tool that you used in the video? when i tried to replace the screens on my previous itouches, all the instructional videos made it seem super easy to get the lcd screen off but it was a huge PITA and i ended up doing more damage than good.
Which cables would be the most likely? I have rechecked the conections and they all seem to be seated. I did hold down the home button without the rubber top and got a little shock.
Hi, I was curious on whenever I clicked the LCD cable back into place my Ipod wont turn on. Is there something that I did wrong? Please answer! Very good tutorial btw!
i was wondering if you could tell me if heatgun could help in loosen the cable for removal? and you super glue the volumen-power button to the housing or how you put back in its place? thanks man i apreciate all your guide :)
Yes, however it's a good idea to check all of your connections as if one popped loose, another one may have as well and it's better to find out before sealing the unit back up.
@PowerbookMedic Hey your tutorial is great! but i am only looking to take the LCD Screen off (smashed :( ) do i have to continue removing stuff in the ipod if the LCD is off??
I am trying to replace the power/volume button and I was wondering if you can make a video showing how to remove it completely and apply a new one or can you please tell me. Thank you
Nice! Where do you guys get all these tools that you are using? I bought some case opener tool kit on eBay and it was really bad quality, what do you recommend?
Seems like the video ended before the process was finished...is there a part 2? I was waiting to get to replacing the charging port. Is there a video on this process? Thank you.
is it possible to to take the components from the ipod touch 4g and put it in an iphone housing for more cases or is there a way to use iphone cases on the ipod touch 4g itself
My down volume button was jammed recently, should I bring it in to Apple or would it be easier to fix it myself? I don't have warranty on this anymore.
Hi there, great video unfortunately I watched this to late...ahhhhh, I somehow managed to separate the battery from the copper and not when I re assembly the lot it doesn’t charge. Only whilst the charger is plugged in the battery sign comes on but doesn’t charge enough to turn he iPod on. What’s the solution to this please, would I need to get a new battery etc..+ how is it a straight swap ? Many thanks in advance.
@PowerbookMedic Hey, could you give me some "specs" on the soldering? For example, heat temperature and what size solder to use! I'm a little stuck because I dont wanna over heat it and I dont wanna use a solder too big! Please respond!
I've done that too 4 months ago. I just got done fixing a friends ipod and i found it easier to separate some of these hard glued parts with strips of paper cardboard ( like index card ) wedge it in slowly holding it down and work in a flat tool, it works for me i havent tore any ribbon cables.
If I want to replace the touchscreen+digitizer, after disassemble the broken screen, how is the new screen assembled on the ipod? I mean, does the new screen to be glued when finishing the reparation? Thanks.
also, would it be possible to buy the iphone 4s's higher resolution cameras, and put the on the ipod touch 4g, as a modification? (without it causing any problems putting it back together)
I'm wondering, is it possible to upgrade an ipod touch just by removing the apple gear and put it in a larger home made case where hou can store more stuff in like more RAM and than have a better ipod?
hola, I found an ipod touch 4th generation while snorkeling around the dock at the lake i swim at. i have no idea how long it was down there but i put it in a bag of rice when i got home and waiting a day or two, then i saw your tutorial and dried it out that way, so now it doesnt turn on but i plugg it into a charger and it turns on but the screen is all weird like if there is water in it or something, any ideas?
About 2 months ago I had my iPod in my purse and a bottle of Powerade I had in my bag wasn't sealed fully, and slowly dripped on my ipod. I used a hair dryer, rice, leaving it face down in sunlight and my ipod won't turn on or anything at all. What do you think it is?
@PowerbookMedic I have the same problem. There is a gray blotch on the top left corner of the screen, but It happend a 10:00pm last night, and its not going away. It looks about 1/4 of a milimeter vanished, but its still there. Can you please help? Thank you so much.
It is likely just the LCD, but you need to replace the LCD / digitizer assembly to fix the issue. There is a chance it could be the logic board, but LCD is much more likely.
@gutturtle i have seen some vids where they do replace it and others where they dont. I didnt replace it as i was afraid that i would not get it in the exact place and it may obstruct front facing lens or would cause ipod to not got glue back together correctly I glued it back and everything seems to be okay.this is first one iv done so maybe next time i might bullet and try replacing it
does this fix the common volume and lock button problem or is that OS based? because it always fixes when i restore from DFU mode.... just never permanently
My Daughter Cracked the Glass on her 4th Gen Ipod touch I purchased new Glass is it possible to seperate the LCD from the Glass, and just replace the glass or do I have to purchase a whole new Glass/LCD component?
Just acquired one of these for free trying to fix it...it was washed an plugged into a power source..I realize some parts may be fried...any ideas which ones? I know the battery will probably have to be replaced but what else?
my ipod has some water (not a lot) behing the screen. You can see the water when the ipod is on, but the ipod functions normally. if i was to try and remove the water, should i open the ipod as shown and stop at 1:37 or will i have to seperate the lcd and digitizer? (i can provide an image if needed)
To use your old lcd, you would have to separate the digitizer from the lcd which usually ends up in cracking the LCD. You're best bet is to replace the whole assembly.
basically started this procedure and got the screen off and unplugged the LCD cable. but next to the ribbon I tore the orange ribbon which was attached to the screen on the inside. i havent got a new digitizer and lcd screen yet but i was wondering is this bad that i tore that orange ribbon?
recently my ipod was rained on, i let it dry out and most of it works, but my volume will turn on and off, but it wont play at all with out headphones (even unplugged it says headphones are in). Is it my speaker thats buster or my head phone jack? thanks for the help!
@PowerbookMedic My Dock Connector doesnt work after my display repair... The display is now pasted so im not sure if i can remove it a second time... Is there any way to replace the dock connector or fix this problem? Thank you

You are the man. I could not for the life of me figure out how to do a back replacement. Thank you ipod God.
I laid my iPod down on a counter that I didn't realize was soaked in water, and water got into the charging port. The iPod functioned just fine, but it could no longer charge for whatever reason. Kurt for me I always play with it one day I just want to charge it but it didn't for idk reason and today my mom found it and we try to recharge it but it didn't
It could be a defective display assembly. If your old one is functional enough for testing, when you plug it back in does it work at all?
@Chavaan1 - It's likely you didn't connect the display cable back properly or that that cable is also torn. The cable is not a sticker. If it tears, it will have to be replaced.
ty! do u recommend heating the ipop before removing the digitizah?
The same thing has happened to my iPod, I am going to open it up next week to have a closer look. Have you opened yours up yet?
@floopdiddy - The plastic cosmetic buttons aren't attached. You can remove the actual buttons (the ones responsible for the actual clicking) from the cable.
Where did you get that tool for opening the iPod it's perfect!!!!
do you have to do all that to remove the battery? or can you remove the battery after you remove the metal bracket?
Right, I understand that and is what I'm trying to do. How do I separate the metal case and the motherboard/volume ribbon cable so I can hammer the 2 dents out?
@KidFunni13 - Not sure I understand the question. The LCD does "plug in" via it's connector to the logic board.
@mahonums - The home button does come away from the glass and lcd component.

Do I have to put the screwdriver between the glass and the plastic or the plastic and the metal?

Rob
to replace the battery, is it needed to remove the logic board? many thanks from NZ!
@PowerbookMedic So you just need to replace the Power/Volume flex cable to fix the power button right? Please Reply!
Where do I get that at? Is it easy to replace it by hands or do I need to get it professionally done?
PowebookMedic Do you have any videos on how solder a iPod touch 4 speaker I bought one with ripped speaker cables
About to help a friend tackle this. Just one question, are all the small Philips screw inside it the same or different for each part it comes off of, like some longer or shorter. Thanks!
@Marifervc - You likely need to replace the home flex cable or the logic board.
@PowerbookMedic Could you make a complete video of the ipod touch disassembly and how to change the back panel and finally assembly? PLEASEEE I really need this
Which part do I pry the glass on, the glass before the black part, or, on the edge of the casing?
what type of flat tool do you recommend? what is the name of the tool that you used in the video? when i tried to replace the screens on my previous itouches, all the instructional videos made it seem super easy to get the lcd screen off but it was a huge PITA and i ended up doing more damage than good.

do you put the tool between the glass and the plastic or the plastic and the metal
@parkourkid4ever - Either the digitizer cable is not properly seated or you have a defective digitizer.
what adhesive is used to close it back up. need to unjam the power button and i do all my own repair work since im stationed overseas.
You can sometimes reposition the home button when opening up the device.
i was wondering if you could tell me if heatgun could help in loosen the cable for removal? and you super glue the volumen-power button to the housing or how you put back in its place? thanks man i apreciate all your guide :)
Hey, when i pry my screen off, do i pry between the rubber seal and digitizer? Or rubber seal and metal housing?
Yes, however it's a good idea to check all of your connections as if one popped loose, another one may have as well and it's better to find out before sealing the unit back up.
@PowerbookMedic Hey your tutorial is great! but i am only looking to take the LCD Screen off (smashed :( ) do i have to continue removing stuff in the ipod if the LCD is off??
@PowerbookMedic What do you do when your power button gets jammed? I mean, how do you fix that? Can you just pop it back up or... Please reply!
I am trying to replace the power/volume button and I was wondering if you can make a video showing how to remove it completely and apply a new one or can you please tell me. Thank you
@iapdirect - You do not have to heat it up. It is recommended to replace the adhesive.
Can you please make a video on how to solder the volume/power piece and how to remove the old one thanks
could you guys make or complete the video on how to replace the volume/power cable
Nice!
Where do you guys get all these tools that you are using?
I bought some case opener tool kit on eBay and it was really bad quality, what do you recommend?
@STRmw2 - It could have been moisture behind the glass. It's hard to say without seeing the unit.
@PowerbookMedic
what holds the ipod touch and the screen? is it some kind of jelly?
@armcruncher - You need to replace the digitizer and lcd panel together as one assembly.
Seems like the video ended before the process was finished...is there a part 2? I was waiting to get to replacing the charging port. Is there a video on this process? Thank you.

Okay, so does the screen just fit back on, or is glue needed?
also, would it be possible to buy the iphone 4s's higher resolution cameras, and put the on the ipod touch 4g, as a modification? (without it causing any problems putting it back together)
How do u put the new screen on?
Do u glue it?
HA! DigiRepair forgets about the power/volume button cable and tears it. Finally a professional video.
that small spring that you touch in 3:02 is it very important? mine fell off and i didn't found it D:
i looked on your website for a new home button but couldnt find one so do you know where i could find one from
I'm wondering, is it possible to upgrade an ipod touch just by removing the apple gear and put it in a larger home made case where hou can store more stuff in like more RAM and than have a better ipod?
You likely have bent bins on your dock connector and either need to straighten them or replace the logic board.
@AlexTVYo - You likely need to open it up and reposition the position or possibly replace it.
Hey I tore the copper ribbon cable that you mention at 2:03. Is there anything I can do to fix it or am I screwed?
any idea on a rough estimate on how much that would cost?
hola, I found an ipod touch 4th generation while snorkeling around the dock at the lake i swim at. i have no idea how long it was down there but i put it in a bag of rice when i got home and waiting a day or two, then i saw your tutorial and dried it out that way, so now it doesnt turn on but i plugg it into a charger and it turns on but the screen is all weird like if there is water in it or something, any ideas?

@anoblea15 - You will likely have to replace the logic board to fix the issue.
is possible change only the glass? I found in my city, in Brazil, only the glass selling, and the glass + LCD, but it's too expensive. Thanks
@MrRaven92 - You can usually reuse the adhesive that is there. Otherwise we sell replacement adhesive at our online store.
@Nevvbs - Usually that will require an LCD replacement.
We regularly stock these, so you may want to check back. The GB does not matter. You can use an 8, 32, or 64 in any model.
It is likely just the LCD, but you need to replace the LCD / digitizer assembly to fix the issue. There is a chance it could be the logic board, but LCD is much more likely.

is the on/off-volume cable solder?
does this fix the common volume and lock button problem or is that OS based? because it always fixes when i restore from DFU mode.... just never permanently
@scarozza1 - The dent may be putting pressure on the lcd. I'd try to replace the case first, and if that doesn't fix it, replace the LCD.
We call the metal flat tool an iPad opening tool. It is available on our website.
@coolnoodles11 - It shouldn't, but if you aren't careful you can damage any component in the iPod.
My Daughter Cracked the Glass on her 4th Gen Ipod touch I purchased new Glass is it possible to seperate the LCD from the Glass, and just replace the glass or do I have to purchase a whole new Glass/LCD component?
@MrJasonrolfe - There is a very high likelihood of damaging the glass which is why it is recommended to replace the glass and lcd on this model.
i need a battery replacement..how much is it? and where are you guys located?
Just acquired one of these for free trying to fix it...it was washed an plugged into a power source..I realize some parts may be fried...any ideas which ones? I know the battery will probably have to be replaced but what else?

the power button on my ipod 4 gen sank in. do i have to replace anything or just open it and fix it ? what can you recommend ?
You don't have to have it, but it makes things go back together better...especially if the unit has been opened multiple times.
Using all those metal tools how many have you messed up?
recently my ipod was rained on, i let it dry out and most of it works, but my volume will turn on and off, but it wont play at all with out headphones (even unplugged it says headphones are in). Is it my speaker thats buster or my head phone jack? thanks for the help!
@PowerbookMedic
My Dock Connector doesnt work after my display repair... The display is now pasted so im not sure if i can remove it a second time... Is there any way to replace the dock connector or fix this problem? Thank you
@Stxpz - Usually you'll need to use adhesive strips. Those are available at our website.
@ayomelanie - Probably not, it should likely reassemble fine...but then again it depends on exactly which screw.
do you have a reassemble video of this?
@makemelaughprod - You can use adhesive strips which are available from our online store. Your DO NOT glue it.
do you have to glue it back in?
