Thanks for the video! When de-soldering you can use a little amount of fresh solder on the tip of the soldering iron and would help you to de-solder with much ease.

This is the best, most accurate tut I’ve watched so far. I’m attempting to do this... One guy goes bloop bloop bloop and the battery is desoldered. It took me forever🤦🏼‍♀️ Another guy had the display off in like 3 seconds...I spent over an hour🤦🏼‍♀️-he never mentioned ^glue^😥 just double sided tape....well obvs his opened right up! Mine is full of glue, like they weren’t having this thing open ever. I wound up cracking the screen in a couple spots. I’m still working on soldering the battery in. I’m not ordering a new screen until I’m sure the battery is gonna work. Ty for showing the legit probs of trying to fix these things! It’s more complicated than people think!

OK; I just went through this exercise of replacing the battery. The issue is: trying to unsolder the battery as is won't work, as the contacts are covered with silicone, which is not heat conduction; hence, the difficulty to get it off. Solution; use a sharp object, like a cutter, and scrape the silicon off. Add a bit of solder to each point, and then heat one point and pull slightly until off, and repeat with the other two. Since I did not want to open a new cartridge of silicon, I opted ti use a piece of insulating tape and put a patch of 5 by 20 millimetres over these three solder points. -- Also, add solder to the three battery contacts AFTER routing it under the circuit board. Way easier to fiddle it through. :)

Thanks for the guide! It really helped.
Everything was doing great but when I tried to turn it on. It didn't. I thought the new battery was bad so I
put the old one back. Nothing. I looked at the board and it seems at 5:20, I put my tool a little bit too far and broke 2 capacitors/resistors. It sucks. I really thought I could do it. I could try to replace them but it's way too tiny to attempt that.
Besides, I didn't back up my stuff lol

heating a piece, even to remove the solder on a component still requires the iron to have a bead of it on the tip. This works like hot mercury, molding to form and transferring heat to the ribbon. That's why you had such trouble achieving temp. it wasn't transferring. A blunt tip might remedy this.

Well done, the first time it's usually the tricky one, I'm trying this as soon the replacement battery arrives, no way I'm paying Apple 100 € to do this (replacement only cost 12 €). Thanks!

Worked great. Others were completely removing the screen. Only thing is I got white screen after replacement and had to hold power home and vol up for a bit mild panic but did the trick. Haven't soldered in years good advice on bottom of the tabs solder.

I watched a number of videos over and over thinking I had this procedure down pat. And this one seemed to make it simpler without removing the LCD screen, cables and parts for the front-facing camera, etc. In THIS video from 2:40 to 3:07 there's mention of the WiFI cable and the LCD cable attached to the motherboard. All good. But at 6:16 the battery cover is removed and just lifted off -- only problem is that on MY iPod Touch 4th gen there was a copper cable attaching the battery cover to a small square sheet of copper on the rear-facing camera, located at the top left corner in the video -- but it doesn't show in this video. It easily snapped in two when I took off the battery cover. Dang!! :-( I continued the battery replacement and put everything back together, then turned it on. The screen is now a MESS!! A total disaster. I can see everything that should be there "under" what appears to be damage to the screen electronics from the heat gun when I softened the adhesive around the edges. I guess the screen is EXTREMELY susceptible to damage to "too much heat." Had that been emphasized, I think I would have been more cautious in applying heat to the face. I thought I was being careful.
The battery replacement only cost me $7.00 on Amazon. But now I'm wondering -- do I order a new screen for something like $13.00, send the whole unit in for repair to a special shop (for ~$30), or just chuck the whole thing and purchase a NEW 5th gen unit that's faster and holds more songs and apps? Apple had refused to do the repair, along with two other local fix-it shops in my area (they said it wasn't worth their time to do this type of work anymore). Looks like Apple designs these things so when the battery goes bad, they INTEND it to get thrown away!!!! Sad for us, more money in Apple's pocket.
It was an interesting "learning" experience -- maybe I should have just let someone else do the work. Crud...

Great video. I did this replacement twice because the first battery was deeply discharged. However the second was also deeply discharged.
I have changed the battery as you said. Then I followed all the steps but the battery was just hanging in an endless time of charging.
I think it has to do with the age of them. After all the batteries for the ipod touch 4g are over a decade old.

  • @johnintagliata7792

Very nicely made video. However, when I was prying up the metal cover at the corner, I inadvertently got my pry tool underneath a plastic part that had a black and red wire and the plastic part remained attached to the metal cover (where the pry tool is at 6:08 in the video). The black and red wire broke and there is no way to fix it. Too bad the video didn't caution about this. No worries. Live and learn. Also, my metal cover has a copper strip that broke when I removed the metal cover. It is connected to somewhere under the green pc board, so I don't know how this could have been avoided.

    • @johnintagliata7792
      @johnintagliata7792 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Update. I discovered that the part with the black and red wires that I accidentally pulled out is just the speaker. I use my iPod with headphones all the time anyways, so no big deal. Since it was just the speaker i went ahead and replaced the battery (which was pretty simple, btw). Anyway, iPod works fine now.

I accidentally deleted someones comment about the solder and iron that I used.
It was a non-temp controlled 40 watt iron with, solder was either .020 or .032 I would probably go with .020.

+How2Tech Thanks for the video & letting us sit in on your learning curve, I'll soon be attempting this myself. It seems that if you put the battery ribbon under the motherboard before priming it w/solder it would work better since it seems to be such a tight fit. Also that LCD looked quite smudged on the sealed side, perhaps a little cleaning before closing it up.

Answer to my own question: No problem, it works. The edges (display) of the LCD screen are a little mucked up where I probably damaged them, but otherwise, it works. I will agree with everyone else - this is a bear of a repair, fraught with potential pitfalls. Unless your ipod a very dear keepsake, maybe you should get a new one.

what a complete pain in the ass. everything was glued together. took forever to get this thing apart. there was two things glued to the top of the screen, one was for the wifi and something on the other side that i ripped. i call bs on that was his first time. it looked way to easy. at least its back together and working. this was my first and last ipod touch battery change.

That was probably his first time with an iPod touch 4 but not his first time with an iPod/phone

Imo its better to just cut the ribbon since the battery is trash anyway, and it allows better access, and leverage on the solder points.

My Ipod came on, displayed the white apple on the black screen for just a second, and then blinked off. After this, i tried to plug it in to a charger, i could hear the sound it plays when you plug it in, but there was still no picture.

Hi, nice video and good details.
Try some masking tape to hold down the item you are working on if you don't have access to a Panavise or similar device.

Do not waste your time trying to fix your Ipod. This job is not for the amature. I have years of experiance as an Amature Radio Operator and have built many radios from scratch and a project like this is not for someone with no experience.
The main problem is the Liquid Crystal Display. Prying on it will damage it. Applying heat to it will damage it. not getting the miniature connector on the top end in right will damage it. Agreed some people can attempt this and be successful but be warned that THIS IS NOT A WALK IN THE PARK. First of all if you have no soldering skills you are wasting your time. The display cannot be bent in the least bit and trying to separate this from the rest of the device is critical and you only get one shot.
Granted I got it apart and replaced the battery and got it together but when I fired it up one side of the display was black from the left side from top to bottom about an inch wide. This damage was incurred I am sure when prying off the Display. This is extremely hard to do without damaging it. The sound worked and the display worked on the right side but half a screen is no good.
Save your money and take it to a repair place and even then they might tell you that there is a chance the display will be damaged.
Heck I might not be the best but like I said this is not a job for a person that never did this type of work before.
My advice is save your money on the battery purchase. Sometimes a project like this is good practice but it can be disheartening when you fire it up and it is damaged. The anguish makes it a bad project. If you really, really want to save your Gen 4 then take it to a store that will guarantee it to be as good as new or just spend the money on a new one. You will be cash ahead.
    Maximus has spoken.
As it is written so it shall be.
    PS:
For those of you that do have success,
Though I have beaten you and flayed you,
By the living God that made you,
You are a better man than I Gunga Din.

The last part is the trickiest, getting that screen *$&*#)# connector in place. Otherwise your screen stays black or in my case, white. Patience.... patience..... GNNNNN

Why couldn't they have made battery replacement for these iPods as easy as the old phones used to be...just slide off the back cover flip out the battery and lay the new one down and snap into place ! Thank God I won this $400. 32 GB 4th Gen iPod years ago in a contest because I would be pissed that I spent that much money and even though it still works the charge won't last a day even if I shut it off!
