  • All of the sudden my 96 GTI would do nothing when I pressed the start button. I tested my battery, starter, starter relay, key fob, start button and all was good, but bad news when I tested my dess post. Now it is time to replace it.

    Hey Don! Just found your channel because I'm currently trying to figure out why my ski died on the lake today and wouldn't fire back up. Channel was super rough today from all the traffic so we were getting beat up. Caught a tow back to my truck and got home, pulled the plugs, put the key on the post and tried to fire it to see if water was in the cylinders and it does absolutely nothing. Nothing spins, no debris caught in impeller or pump.. Beginning to think hydro lock? I'm stumped. Ski is a 99' GTI. Any ideas? I don't know much about these either, just bought it about 6 weeks ago and this is my first one.

      When you say, "it does absolutely nothing", do you mean the engine does not crank over? It could mean many things. You could have blown a fuse, so I would check your ebox. Your rectifier could have died which would drain your battery causing you to lose all power. I would first make sure you have a fully charged battery so that you can begin to check other things. Feel free to email me with other questions.

    • @Chattsteezy
      @Chattsteezy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@papadonjetski9535 Yes it does not crank over. There is only an audible “ clicking “ but nothing physically spins, motor, driveshaft, etc.. Sometimes only one click, sometimes a few. I don’t want to assume the motor is shot but I can’t get it to spin to see if it will shoot water out of the plug holes. I don’t know where to start.

    • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chattsteezy I don't believe your engine is bad. That "clicking" sound tells me you should check your starter relay and starter. You can test them easily. First, make sure your battery is fully charged, it should show around 12.6 volts. Second, place a screwdriver over the 2 posts of the starter relay, touching each at the same time. Sparks will probably fly, but that is normal. If the engine turns over then you probably have a bad relay. If the engine does not turn over then you may have a bad starter. The relay is in the ebox, so pull the ebox out just far enough to open it and find the relay. A starter relay is an easy and inexpensive fix.

      @Chattsteezy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@papadonjetski9535 Okay that’s a little reassuring I will start there. Assuming this could be my issue, would a starter or relay cause the ski to die like I mentioned?

    • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chattsteezy Unfortunately no. If the ski was running and then suddenly dies, it would not be the starter or relay. Are you using the oil injector or premix? If you are using the oil injection, is there oil in your oil tank? Also, check your oil lines to make sure they are intact and connected to the oil pump and engine. It you ran it with no oil then you may have locked up the engine. See if you can turn the crankshaft by hand. Remove the flywheel guard and see if you can turn the engine by hand.

    I’ve got a halfway bad post on my ski, i can twiggle and tweak the key and get the jacked up start button to cooperate and mine will run. When it wants to. But does a great job of making me look like a complete toolbag at the dock plenty of times. My thought is I would have already grabbed new key and dess post and slapped it in but don’t you gotta program it to the computer afterwards? I didn’t wanna get stuck with a new button key and post and a no start ski. Good video tho thanks bossman. Also wonder where the beeping comes from, mine used to beep when I slapped the key on it, now nothing but she still runs 😂

    man my 2002 Sea-Doo gti is kicking my ass am hopping you can help me a bit! Back story I purchased to skis about two weeks ago never owned any 0 knowledge might have done a few boo boos I those first days of owning them I scared the web and I can say I think Iliana know a lot more now but am still pulling my hair with this sky I can’t get it to start ! When I purchased I didn’t start so obviously it help me to knock the price down it had a low battery at that time and first mistake I use my jump box to starter and still nothing, then I got home and in the next few day I tried to start it with the jumper add starter fluid and it did start for minor periods. Second mistake I didn’t know at that time that I had to start sky then water. Then water off then sky! I was trying to start it with the hose on and then of I was all over the place. Then I learn the cycle and said oh oh 😕 then I decided to buy a new battery because I learn that jumping the unit could damage the computer . So battery came in installed it connected my hose water off cranked it and boom sky fired right up turned the water on and I felt the idle was having issues felt to low so I started reving it a bit it satayed on for about 40 seconds to a minute and all of asl sudden I hear this grinding noice and. Off it goes and I haven’t been able to start it since then I check compression is like 120 both I check spark I see spark I added fuel in the carb and nothing it just cranks and cranks I’m thinking I might damaged the computer with the jump box but it did start once with the new battery?? • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The fuse blows because your MPEM is bad. I once connected a battery charger to my battery while it was still connected to the ski and it fried the MPEM. Afterwards the fuse blew when connecting the battery. I would go to some message boards and see if anyone has a solution without having to buy a new MPEM.

      Did you see my other "no start" video on a GTS? That GTS did nothing when I pressed the start button and so I checked the battery, starter, starter relay, ground wires in the ebox and from the battery to the engine for corrosion or loose connection. I tested to make sure i was getting 12 volts to the starter relay. I then tested the start button, dess post and key to make sure they were working. Have you checked all of these?

    Came across your video while looking for an answer, maybe you can help since my problem isnt identical to yours. 2000 Seadoo GTX i just purchased this year. Most of the time it fires right up but about 20% of the time it doesnt. The key sounds the dual beep, but the start button produces nothing. No click of solonoid, no hum, nothing. Eventually it will work though. Sometimes a couple tries later, sometimes several minutes and dozens if button pushes later. Its hapoened in the middle of the lake with two kids in tow, which was a little unerving. Any idea?

    • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would get a new starter relay, its cheap and easy to replace. I would start there and see if that solves the problem. Have you tested the start button? I did another no start video about 4 months earlier than this video in which the no start problem was the mpem. However, in that video I show how to test the start button to make sure that is not the problem.

    • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it run now with a new MPEM? If not, your engine may be full of water and that could be why it will not crank over. Did you remove the spark plugs and then press the start button to see if any water shoots out? If the engine is full of water and you try to start it, you could really damage the engine.

      @@papadonjetski9535 thx , this is my other account btw - but it just clunks, my buddy put in a MPEM & a time out relay, he couldnt figure it out, I found the wire diagram. • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I'm not familure with a time-out relay and how it might play into your issue. Based on my experience, I believe it is the starter relay. Any chance you have another ski that you could pull a relay from and put it in yours to see if it solves the starter engaging? A starter relay, when going bad, can stick open or closed.

    • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I accidentally sent my reply before I finished. When a starter relay sticks, the 12v power can stay engaged, and thats why a ski will sometimes turn over when the key is connected. Again, I'm not 100% sure that is your issue, it is just my opinion.

    • @papadonjetski9535
      @papadonjetski9535  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of my other seadoos did that recently, it was caused by a bad battery connection. Make sure your battery is good and you have a good connection. As for the ground wire, make sure there is no corrosion at its connection to the engine. I would clean it up really good. You can do an ohms test from one end to the other on the cable to see if you have resistance. If you have a high resistance then your cable is bad. Lastly, it could be your rectifier pumping to much current.

      Hey man wonder if you could help me out here. I consider myself a pretty good mechanic I have been turning wrenches for 15 years now… so I have a 97 gtx… I bought it 3 years ago it sat for a while… I got it and completely went through the whole machine and basically restored it. I had to have 2 new DESS keys programmed to my mpem since the owner had lost the keys Liz’s so I sent it out to westside and they made up 2 keys for me. New keys worked and I got the machine to work great whatever. I replaced the beeper I replaced the start/stop switch and then I replaced the reverse cable… because I wanted to make it perfect…ran great no issues parked it. well I let the machine sit for for about a year and a half and when I went to go start it up today for the first time nothing.. so I got a brand new battery of course and then all I got was just one beep when I would hit the start button. When I put it into the advance diagnostic mode I get 2 short beeps. Do you think this key which I probably used 3-4 times out on the water is already bad? According to the service manual everything is leading me to believe it’s the key.. how the hell do these keys go bad?
