Crossing the two large terminals on the solenoid should activate the starter motor. All it's doing is making a direct connection to the battery. Oh yeah, good vid. Thanks for posting this!
had a similar issue. got the 2 beebs but the start stop wasn't working and my compass direction wasn't indicating. i located the middle plug on my computer where those wires were routed to and i found 2 pins that were not touching their sockets. i didn't think there was anything wrong because i tone tested the start stop switch. i re set those pins by pushing them in and wala!!!!! it all works. the certified sea doo mechanic that replaced the computer never found the issue and said it was faulty. Don't always trust them. do some work until your problem. what made me find it was that the owner ( my neighbor) always had trouble with the switch and never had the compass working. so don't always assume the switch is bad. Hope this helps some of you. btw.. great post
Very helpful. Only thing I was confused about is jumping the solenoid. Even if the switch is bad it will still turn the starter when you jump it with a screwdriver. I always thought that was how you knew if it was good or bad. Am I doing it wrong? lol
Yes you’re correct. I worded it incorrectly, my starter motor was not working causing the power to not crank the engine. Though the power was still jumping the solenoid.
actually, jumping it would cause the starter to fire even if you dont have a key in.. it just wont start. he had 2 issues.. 1 bad starter, and 2 bad safety post.
Just a heads up when you put the screw driver across both posts on the solenoid the starter will turn over without pushing the starter button. Your putting power straight to the starter
lol yes spot on, whats the point of pushing the start button if youre jumping the whole circuit with a screw driver ?? gonna get a hell or a noise while reaching for the start button ... and start is already cranking (if starter is good). Pretty basic stuff covered here, cant really own a jet ski if you dont know things in this video. These issues occur on all 2stroke and 4 strokes since they use basically identical starter solenoids. most of the time, its the DESS post ive found or an issue with the key. Starters on the 787 motor die every year, so I just keep the part number handy for the local dealer, $300 every year or so for a genuine BRP unit.
I think my dess key is bad, it is a three wire version, but the part number listed in the manual does not show on the other three wire versions on amazon. Any suggestions?

I have a 96 with a bad dess switch, 3rd time. Is there a way to convert to the earlier plunger style switch? Do we just solder in a resistor to match the readings and install a different style kill switch? Thanks
buy a candoo pro programmer, you can disable DESS and then your post just becomes a connection, no more reading a programmed key. its a good and bad thing, easier to steal but lets be honest, anyone can just take the whole thing anyways also, with a generic DESS disabled, you can use the same key on multiple jet skis (seadoo brand).
Hope you can help me. 96 GSX. The starter box got flooded so I replaced it with a different one. Now when I place the lanyard I get 2 short beeps and 4 long beeps. I've checked all the fuses in the rear and front boxes (all good) but haven't found the issue. Any suggestions?

I have a 97 XP, was running fine and died out on the water. NO power to anything now, no start no beeps no anything. Dead. Noticed it was beeping lately, sometimes just 1 beep. Could this be the Dess post or possibly a fuse? Plan to diagnose tomorrow.

So my seadoo is making connection and making a peep all the lights turn on but i wont fire up .i trying on a quad power sport battery can that be the problem
Hey man. Whenever you put a screw driver across a silinoid that Jumps the starter an turns the engine over. So idk why your telling people to put a screw driver across and hit the starter button That does not tell you anything

Testing my start stop switch and it's open but when I push the start stop it jumps all over the place. It has straight continuity when I hold it down but trying to ohm out per manufacturer spec and it's just jumping everywhere. Can I safety assume switch is good since i have closed contact?
You could of done continuity test instead of resistance on your switch got same results the resistance reading doesn’t really matter when it should be open. Only mention because hearing the sound is better and easier to understand for some people.
Dang I jumped the solenoid in the turns over I checked the lanyard and it has no arms and it still won’t turn over my only other possibility could be the start stop button I think I’m not sure what else could be can anyone help?
I'm not getting power to my push start but I can crank it over with a screwdriver that means selanod is no good right ? Could that be why I'm not getting spark ???
Hey Adam, I was out on my 1996 SPX and it was running perfect and then died down and wouldn’t start. Tried many times and just get a beep when I hit start. Pulled it out of the water and noticed the drain plug was open. I took it home and cleaned out all water and dried everything. It only had maybe 3 inches or water in the hull. Just for precaution I put in new plugs, changed oil and fuel filter while I had it open, cleaned everything really good and still no luck, just a beep when I hit start, I checked all fuses in the box, put a new solenoid in, still no luck. I tested all wires going to DESS post and start button and still nothing. Any ideas? When I put the key on its recognized and when I hit start all gauges light up and I get a single loud beep. Jumping solenoid with screwdriver did cause it to crank so I replaced that per another video. Please help. I’m lost.
Mine did something similar today. I don't have DESS just standard kill switch and while I was riding the ski stopped moving, but the engine was still running (like the wear ring was toasted). I was towed in about 1000 yards and after that I get no power at all. Haven't had the chance to dig into e-box yet, but did you ever solve your issue?
Ok... several things. First, if you're attempting to do a how to video with electrical items using DC, please be mindful of pos and negative connections. Next, you did A LOT of this out of order. First thing you check is the DESS (key). Should give 2 fast beeps in normal conditions. This is a diagnostic system. No beeps, (or different pattern) indicate next step. If no beeps, first ensure battery power is at the nominal 12VDC USING PROPER POLARITY to ensure against a polarity reverse issue. If power is good, go to DESS post. Post ohms should be infinity without key and about 1 ohm with key. If good, and all beeps are in order and a "no crank" conditions continues, open the electrical box near the VTS and check fuses. And power on the INPUT side of the solenoid. Replace bad fuses and try again. If issue continues, recheck fuses. A bad starter, solenoid, battery (even reading 12VDC but with low cranking amps) or short may be your problem if fuses continue blowing. If fuses are Good, and the is still no beeps, try removing the DESS and press the START/RUN 5 times, and listen for beeps. This is a secondary diagnostic system. If no beeps present, continue troubleshooting. If beeps are present, your DESS maybe the issue. Good to dealer aaaaand have them make a new DESS. ($20) Open the grey box in the front near the fuel tank. In this box, 1 side contains the MPEM and the other contains a bunch of wires a relay and other devices. Check the 3 fuses here. Replace bad ones and observe and correct any water damage. Note the 2 posts with black wires bolted to them. These adre the ground for this part of the jet ski and the ground wire coming from here often breaks. If after repairing water damage and checking fuses, a no beeps condition persists, run a jumper from either ground post back to the battery and try using your DESS again. If no beeps continue, and all wiring is good, the culprit may be you MPEM. Once 2 beeps are confirmed, proceed to next part. Apply DESS and using test light or multimeter, read voltage on OUTPUT of solenoid. Should be ~0vdc. Press start/ stop button while testing and voltage should jump to 12vdc. If not, continue to next paragraph. If it does go to 12vdc, then either the wires going to the starter have a problem, or the starter is defective. Disconnect 2 wire connector going into solenoid and using test light or multimeter with good ground, check for power on the yellow/red wire. It should be ~12vdc. Also, inspect the connector for water damage (common problem). If power is present, then the solenoid is defective and should be replaced. If no power at this wire while pressing start, disconnect the wires under the handle bars for the start stop button and test with multimeter. When button is not pressed, ohms should be infinite. When pressed, resistance should be~1 ohm. If defective, replace button and try again. If problem persists, check wiring between button and solenoid, or between "point a and point b" were power isn't present. DO NOT ARC ACROSS SOLENOID AS YOU RISK DAMAGING THE STARTER, BATTERY, SOLENOID AND IN THE EVENT OF A SHORT, YOU RISK BODILY HARM FROM BATTERY EXPLOSION. And I will be making a proper video to detail all of this. Sub to me for the video. It will be posted by June of 2019.

I'm a firefighter and some people are attempting to steal from a non-profit some men from my department set up a long time ago....
jason, if you jump your solenoid and it works then you can infer that there is something in that circuit that is not working could be solenoid or other things.
Hi Shane, usually if that fuse keeps blowing you have a short to ground somewhere. I would check two things assuming you have a seadoo xp or something with similar components. You will want to remove the wires that connect to your vts box. If the fuse does not blow then that’s the issue. If not that then I would test your stator. I have another video on my account where I test the stator so you can see how to do that. My email is pagsli34@gmail.com if you have anymore questions. Best of luck!
I replaced MPEM. Started right up. But now, if i kill it a few times and goto start it, it will just make like a loud clicking noise. Half the time it cranks over the other half the time it doesnt. I'm thinking starter is bad and seizing up half the time maybe?

I have a 96 with a bad dess switch, 3rd time. Is there a way to convert to the earlier plunger style switch? Do we just solder in a resistor to match the readings and install a different style kill switch?
Thanks
buy a candoo pro programmer, you can disable DESS and then your post just becomes a connection, no more reading a programmed key.
its a good and bad thing, easier to steal but lets be honest, anyone can just take the whole thing anyways
also, with a generic DESS disabled, you can use the same key on multiple jet skis (seadoo brand).
@@oneeyedrone4293 Awesome,
Thank you!👍👍
Hope you can help me. 96 GSX.
The starter box got flooded so I replaced it with a different one. Now when I place the lanyard I get 2 short beeps and 4 long beeps. I've checked all the fuses in the rear and front boxes (all good) but haven't found the issue.
Any suggestions?
I subscribed thanks again for taking the time to do this for us
So i have the same issue. I tested the voltage on the negative and positive wire on the solenoid. Measures 12.6. But nothing is happening. When i jump the solenoid it cranks over. What is the issue
Can you just replace the switch or do you also need the key that goes with it
Great 👍 video
Friends borrowed our 96 for the 4th of July. They called said it died on the lake, they lost the deadman cord. How do I start it to get it back to the boat launch, about 5 miles away.
Thank you
You cannot jump them, tow it back slowly or disconnect water line if towing over 10 mph.
@@oneeyedrone4293 i just needed to bypass the Dess circuit, they lost the chip plug in the lake
@@timmorris3056 still cannot bypass it, you will need a can doo pro tool. That will turn off dess system so the key can just be used as a magnet.
You can also program a new key with the candoo pro system, add new keys etc.
The system is not cheap, but very useful for seadoo jet skis.
My buddies 1995 xp 700 has a rebuilt engine...when it gets hot it wants to shut off..lf you wait a bit it starts up and runs..what could be wrong ??
I put the screw driver accross the selinoid post and got NOTHING. The battery is good. So, is this indicating that the starter that is bad? See my comment below. I have never had gages or beeper working....I am stumped. PLEASE advise!
Very helpful...i just managed to figure out mine. Thanks bud
No problem
Same thing happened on my ski and I’m going to try and fix it now. Thanks for the video👍👍👍
I have a dash light but no beep beep… what could be the cause ?
Great video
I bought xp 96 it doesn't want to start only when you put a little bit of gas in the carb is there a fuel pump in this XP 96 do I need to replace a fuel sending unit
Hi Adam mate I was wondering if you come across an issue before I've got a fault on my Sea-Doo gtx Rotax engine 1997 I believe when I put the key on the display panel comes on for 1 second then goes off but when I push the starter button it comes on again and off if I remove the key and wait ,5 to 6 second and put the key on it does the same the display panel is not staying lit any help would be much appreciated regards Geoff
Hi I have a 1996 Sea-Doo GSX and when I put the key in it beeps and then when I hit the start button it beeps one time but doesn’t do anything. I’ve checked my start switch my key switch and all of the fuses. I can’t seem to find the issue. Can you help me out?
I have a 97 XP, was running fine and died out on the water. NO power to anything now, no start no beeps no anything. Dead. Noticed it was beeping lately, sometimes just 1 beep. Could this be the Dess post or possibly a fuse? Plan to diagnose tomorrow.
Hey Tony, Any Luck? Mine seems to do something similar. My 99 GTX Limited will die randomly on water...It just cuts out completely. After a days rest it will run, but do the same thing all over again. Not sure where to start?
So my seadoo is making connection and making a peep all the lights turn on but i wont fire up .i trying on a quad power sport battery can that be the problem
Hey man. Whenever you put a screw driver across a silinoid that Jumps the starter an turns the engine over. So idk why your telling people to put a screw driver across and hit the starter button That does not tell you anything
he shoulda said “when i put the screwdriver across the solenoid and it cranks on its own, that means you need a new solenoid.” completely missed the whole point
My Jetski Have weak spark ⚡️ Do you know what can be wrong
Does this apply for 1998 sea doos
1997 spx clicks and trim button does not work. Fuses good starter good new solenold .12 volts to the solenold. Test light lights on the trigger side of the solenold when start button is pressed. Also gets 2 beeps when the lanyard is plugged in New battery. What else ??
Testing my start stop switch and it's open but when I push the start stop it jumps all over the place. It has straight continuity when I hold it down but trying to ohm out per manufacturer spec and it's just jumping everywhere. Can I safety assume switch is good since i have closed contact?
I also can hear the starter solenoid click
You could of done continuity test instead of resistance on your switch got same results the resistance reading doesn’t really matter when it should be open. Only mention because hearing the sound is better and easier to understand for some people.
Dang I jumped the solenoid in the turns over I checked the lanyard and it has no arms and it still won’t turn over my only other possibility could be the start stop button I think I’m not sure what else could be can anyone help?
You know what your talking about
I'm not getting power to my push start but I can crank it over with a screwdriver that means selanod is no good right ? Could that be why I'm not getting spark ???
Did you ever figure out the Problem?
I’m lost.
Also the battery was purchased new that day that I took it out so it’s new. I did double check voltage and it’s good.
I can't find the extra wire that goes to the ground of the battery. It feels like I have a short
very helpful video, thanks!
Thanks man!
Hey guys seadoo gti 97 I grounded starter hot wire now no beep any ideas all fuses good lanyard good ect
What if no matter what you do the five amp fuse always breaks
Ok... several things.
Open the grey box in the front near the fuel tank.
Jim Miller getting ready to go pickup a 96 xp 800, might need that video soon the guy said no start and I know nothing about jet skis just want one to ride
@Shawn F you're right. Im behind. Sue me.
@Shawn F look. Im going to be honest. I'm dealing with some shit and haven't even been able to ride my ski let alone take a video of it. I'm dealing with some legal stuff. I'm a firefighter and some people are attempting to steal from a non-profit some men from my department set up a long time ago....
Jim Miller hi did you ever get that video done about the testing on no sparks on seadoo I need help thanks
Hey Jim did you make that post where can I find it on TH-cam you've got a lot of valuable information there thank you very much
Hey , when i boost my battery the seadoo starts and can run for hours , but as soon as i stop the seadoo doesnt start anymore ... helppp
Good morning, I know this is an old post but I'm hoping this comment will get to you. Can you tell me how I can test a 06 RXP VTS switch?
mine periodically begins to start but then nothing. HELP
I put in a new seloniod and battery
when you bridged the two red wires at the solenoid if the starter was good it would have cranked without pushing the start button
Great video. But. Jumping the solenoid would only test your starter and not the solenoid. But thanks for the info.
jason, if you jump your solenoid and it works then you can infer that there is something in that circuit that is not working could be solenoid or other things.
Awesome thanks
Thank you so much
My 5 amp fuse keeps blowing everytime I put one in there. The one next to the 15amp fuse. Any thoughts on how to fix?
Hi Shane, usually if that fuse keeps blowing you have a short to ground somewhere. I would check two things assuming you have a seadoo xp or something with similar components. You will want to remove the wires that connect to your vts box. If the fuse does not blow then that’s the issue. If not that then I would test your stator. I have another video on my account where I test the stator so you can see how to do that.
My email is pagsli34@gmail.com if you have anymore questions. Best of luck!
The video on my account i think is called testing Seadoo xp ignition systems I believe
Usually this means your mpem is shot
Just replace it and it’ll be good
I replaced MPEM. Started right up. But now, if i kill it a few times and goto start it, it will just make like a loud clicking noise. Half the time it cranks over the other half the time it doesnt. I'm thinking starter is bad and seizing up half the time maybe?
@@adampaganelli4891 if you replace the dess unit, do you need a new key? Or reprogramming? Thx bro, you are the best
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM CAN YOU FIX MY SEE.DOO
Looks like you have a 10 amp fuse where a 5 should be in the back box.
