    That’s that’s what I like about Woodturning is all the different grains in the wood. I think the way it is shaped sometimes helps bring the grain out, but the different grains is what makes the turning so beautiful.

    These kinds of pieces are symbols of our lives. Not perfect but perfect useable by the Man in charge. Yes, I like it, still working on some of my own. Just ordered my Sand o flex and told my tree cutter what I’m looking for. It’s going to be fun! Thanks again.

    Phil,
    The gap is part of the natural beauty. I wouldn’t change a thing. I love the bowl. The only thing I would have done is use brown thick starBond CA in the cracks. I have found that the ca doesn’t take away from the natural beauty of the wood. Nice job 👍

    The Nordic countries decorate many of the (Sloyd) carvings with decorative cuts stained with coffee. I've made a few spoons with decorative carvings and stained the features with some good ole Folgers Instant. Crushed the crystals to a fine powder, rubbed into the carving, and finished with hemp oil. I think the Nordic term for this process is called Kolrosing. Enjoyed the video.

    Phil this video just popped up in suggested videos to watch. I have never seen it.
    Just the right time because a few weeks ago we were up at our sons place. He has acres and acres of alder.
    He was pulling a stump and was about to toss it in the junk wood pile. He was cutting firewood for this winter and said the stump was no good. I looked at it and it was completely spalted and I said it sure is.I have no idea yet what to do with it but it is still pretty wet so I am letting it dry.
    Now on to your bowl. I think it looks great. Really nice grain. As for what the broken spot could be. If it was a gravy bowl it would be perfect for the spoon to rest in so it would not fall into the gravy. Just kidding! It looks like it belongs there. I expect that the pieces I have is going to be hard to keep together. But I will try and for sure I will have a hot cup of coffee and some fresh grounds handy.
    Gary

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gary, around here, and probably there, alder just seems to go for firewood. I remember turning my first piece of it and being very surprised at what was inside. It's a very hard wood, often with great grain patterns. It sands and finishes beautifully, too. I have more of it but the pieces are too big for me to cut by myself. I've got to get my son-in-law up here to give me a hand because I would like to turn more of it, soon. I'm sure you will be happy with most anything you make out of yours.
      Hope you are feeling better!
      Phil

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Phil I feel much better. I turned a nice Oak bowl today and finished and Apple bowl I roughed out months ago. Years ago when I was much younger we would go and cut firewood. Mostly was alder. Now our son has a lifetime supply of alder firewood. Alder is also great for smoking salmon.
      The day I got the spalted wood he was cutting up a tree that had been down for almost a year. It was purple half way through where it had been laying on the ground so he thought I might want to see how it would turn. Some sort of fungus I guess.
      Way to wet to be fun to turn but I have one roughed out.

    Hi Phil,
    Pretty neat idea,,,,a Thumb Bowl!I like it !
    I've used coffee grounds after they have made coffee!I take them out of the filter and dry them!
    I also use very fine saw dust that I take off of my shop vac filter.I put the CA in the cracks,,,,rub some saw dust into the cracks,,,,apply more CA and more saw dust.I think the fine saw dust not only goes deeper into the cracks but also forms a better "bond" due to it's very fine "particles"!
    A question,,,I see you signing your pieces and have to wonder how the heck you keep the fine line felt tip markers from drying out?I use the Sharpie brand and no matter what I try they just dry up fast!
    Thanks for the video!
    Tom

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dust from the vac filter is a great idea, Tom! I'll have to try that. Lord knows, the filter is always full, anyway! I do like the coffee grounds because of the color but it does depend on the piece, I suppose. I haven't had a problem with the Sharpie drying out, at all. I do keep the lid on all the time, but I'm sure you do to. I use the Extra Fine Point, if that helps.

    • @thomasckuzia7129
      @thomasckuzia7129 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I save fine saw dust from various different color woods in prescription bottles and label them.I also hammer down used coffee grounds on a steel plate to make them finer! LOL
      To me,,,using coffee grounds ,as is,(even fine grind) is like making cement with cobble stone and not sand.The finer the filler ,the more of it you get into a crack
      I use the same Extra Fine Point markers and do keep the cap on very tight.

    You must have Acetone based wood hardeners in the US? I've used it recently on a 17th cottage window frames (in the UK). It doesn't darken or change the wood too dramatically. That said, wear gloves, because it's like Gorilla Glue for staining fingers!

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really know what the base of the wood hardeners available locally is, mikenco. I used some one time and found it did discolor the wood and I did not like using it and probably won't, again. I do always wear glove when finishing.

      Love this bowl Phil... I missed this video... Probably others also along the way too. Lots of things going on in this bowl.. Being from Ga.with lots of brothers and a sister a person could learn how to hold on to the popcorn bowl with that thumb rest going on there... Super nice !!! Later my friend. Km

      Phil ... I seen someone put woodshavings in a blender,fill it to the top loosley compacted and turn it on, after a bit you have wood powder to fill cracks and pour the CA glue rub it in with your finger ad .ore wood powder as needed, The wood wheeler from Arkensaw is where I seen this ...

    Use should be using used, dried coffee grounds. Don't waste the new stuff. :)

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good advice, Donna! I just have to remember to save and dry some old grounds and I'm sure they would work just fine.

    Not sure why you'd use good coffee to fix that? You must be stood in piles of the right colour turning dust to fill those cracks seamlessly?

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't really like filling cracks, mikenco. To me, they always look like filled cracks. So, if I must, I'm going to make it stand out rather than look like I've done a poor job of trying to hide something. Does that make sense?

    Phil, I have not yet seen how you’re going to address your new “feature”, but……if I was dead set against a resin fix, I’d take my Dremel ( or a fine rasp) and smoothe out that feature and call it a “spoon slot”!!! You could even carve a simple spoon to lay in the spot to go with the bowl…..!!! Just sayin’.

    Rotten wood hardener works well, if you can find a store that carries it!

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have some Minwax Wood Hardener, Paul, but I'm scared to use it. I don't know how it will finish or what kind of finish I can put over it. I'll try it one of these days...

    • @paulblackman3936
      @paulblackman3936 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phil you can put any finish you like over it. All it does is stabilise the fibres so that you can still turn it.

    • @paulblackman3936
      @paulblackman3936 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephen Ogle video #97 is a good watch. He shows you how to stabilise rotten wood.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll give it a look, Paul. I used to watch Stephen but I don't think he has had anything new for quite awhile.

    • @paulblackman3936
      @paulblackman3936 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trouble with CA is that it does not penetrate anywhere near as much as rotten wood hardener. The thinness of the wall which lead to the breakage was probably due to the softness of the punky wood. Try it Phil, you will be surprised.
