Cherry Burl Platter - Wood Turning

- I turn a beautiful platter from an old piece of wood picked up at a yard sale. No one is more surprised than me at what was in that piece of cherry. A challenging piece, due to the gaps in the piece, but turned out nice, nevertheless.

You cannot do any better than your best Phil.
😊
Wow! That grain is mesmerizing.
Agree and from a yard sale! 😊
Hi Phil
Love all of your videos
So much learning and Inspiration you are giving new wood Turner's like me me .
God bless you 🙏 ❤️
Long live Phil.
Wow, thank you, Ahsan!
How beautiful this would be in the center of a dinning room table. And to think someone no longer wanted this piece of wood, and you saw the beauty and possibilities in it . A true treasure to be past down for generations found at a yard sale, can you believe that! But it took a master to bring it out for everyone else to see.
I still can't believe I got it so cheap, Patricia! 😊
Thank you Phil for your outstanding videos and turning. God blessings
Glad you like them, Dean, thank you very much! 😊
I love when you take nature's beauty and make the most remarkable things!
Thank you, Jo Ann! It's not hard when you have wood like this to work with. 😊
Phil no matter what you feel about a piece from your skills you certainly realease the beauty held within the timber that in its self is a skill love it 👍
Thank you, Jeff! 😃
Wow that's a beautiful platter! It almost makes you think burl!
As it turns out, Stephen, several of my viewers pointed out that it is indeed a burl, not Birdseye Cherry. I'm glad you like it!
Wow! That is a wonderful piece of Art!!
Thank you very much, Robert! 😊
Yep, I'd call it Birdseye Cherry, Ya did it proud. Beautiful platter...cheese anyone?🧀
You would be wrong, same as me. I'm told it's a Cherry burl, not birdseye. Oh, well, I like it just the same whatever it is! 😊
I love what you have done with this! Stunning.
Thank you so much! 😊
That’s a hard piece. A lot of work. Came out GREAT!!

Wow, thank you, Sylvie! 😊
Hi Phil,
I have been following you for over a year now, this came about when I bought my first large.
You have been a true inspiration to me. Your method of communication is fantastic.
I remain extremely grateful to you.
Best wishes
Derek
From York England UK
Howdy, Derek! Thank you so much for your kind words. Happy and safe turning! 😃
The grain is lovely. It looks almost like marble. And yes, that would be called Birdseye according to the wood database. It’s a beautiful platter. I’d love to have that sitting in my great room. Stunning.
I love this piece, Chanda, I'm glad you like it, too! I've been told it is a burl, rather than birdseye. I got it at a garage sale with a couple other nice pieces of wood for a total of $7.00. One of my best purchases ever!
Phil
Wow! That grain is amazing!
It is indeed, Beatrice!
Thank you, Phil! Beautiful piece! Fantastic grain no matter what you call it! Cheers, Pete
Glad you like it, Pete! Cherry Burl as it turns out. Whatever, it was fun to turn!
Beautiful piece Phil - one of my favourites. It puts me in mind of the shield of an ancient soldier which has been damaged in battle and then left buried in the ground of the battlefield and been rusted and patina'd by the elements and the centuries and then unearthed and cleaned and shined by an archaeologist who recognised its history and significance but who left its flaws to demonstrate its purpose. I know the wood is not centuries old but it shows its age and its flaws and its purpose is now no longer as a tree but as a platter. It is still a piece of history though and you brought that to life with your skill and imagination. You have a gift Phil, truly.
You have quite the imagination, Stevan! And to think the wood came from a garage sale! 😊
Beautiful grain. So very well done.
And to think the wood came from a garage sale!
Before you put oil on , it looked l8ke a piece of stone . It does have beautiful grain . Great job Phil .
I really got lucky finding this piece at a yard sale, I still can't believe it, Jeff! 😄
My goodness that's a big honkin' piece of wood! Wow! I don't know if it's birdseye or not but to me it sure looks like part of a burl with the way the grain goes every direction! It came out beautiful for sure!
You are correct, Hotrod and I was wrong. It is a burl according to many of my viewers. 😊
I can't get over how the grain looks so much like marble. What a beautiful countertop that would make.
Many of my viewers said this is not birdseye but a Cherry Burl. Pretty rare around these parts.
Hi Phil
Thanks so much for your channel.
I have just started wood turning and I'm hooked. I'm in western Australia and am lucky to have access to a range of timber stock. Trying to make a bowl a day ,maybe 4 on the weekend.
Your example and instruction is worth ots weight in gold.
Kind regards
KEV
I appreciate your time watching and commenting, thank you so much, Kevin! 😊
the platter is wonderful, it looks like you captured a storm in the wood and made a platter out of it.
I love your description, Joyce! Thank you! 😊
Phil,
Just seeing this video. Great looking platter (bowl) looks like an Old World classic.
Great Job!!
😊
That grain is amazing. As you were getting ready to turn the top I was thinking it would make a gorgeous end table.
And it came from a yard sale for a couple bucks! 😃
I love the fact your so honest when your in doubt about something. So hard to find these days. Phil, your doing a great job, love your site. Would like to meet you some day. I’m a naivest wood turner just retired. I’m learning a lot from you keep going. 👍👏
I appreciate that, Chris, thank you!
Its really beautiful Phil, wonderful grain. Regards Graham
Thank you, Graham! 😊
Dude! That is incredible. Keep that up. Beautiful stuff.
Thanks a ton, Greg! 😊
Wow, wow, wow! I sure hope that you or one of your kids has this hanging on a wall! It's absolutely stunning.
It's one of my very favorite pieces too, JN! This piece has a bit of a story. I was at a yard sale and this was standing behind an open door. I told the guy I wanted it and he said he had a couple more pieces out in the yard. I bought all three pieces for 7 dollars. This is the only one of those I have turned. The others are a large end-grain Cherry and a 4x8x4ft. piece of Walnut. I only hope the others are as spectacular as this piece is. It really surprised me!
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment!
Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I gotta go to the same garage sales that you go to!
Love the work you do with firewood. Most anyone can take a perfectly dimensioned piece of wood and create. The stuff you work with takes talent and perseverance. Very nice piece.
Thank you for watching and commenting, Jim! By far, I prefer to do the oddball stuff when I can find it, like this piece. It does take perseverance, but the reward is worth it! Most of the time, anyway.
Only one word to describe this piece Mr. Phil.....BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you...
Agreed, Patricia! I still can't believe I found this piece of wood at a yard sale! 😊
I find it beautiful! Great piece!
Yay, thank you, Greer! 😊
A work of ART, Phil. I’m lost for adequate words.
And to think the wood came from a garage sale, Hubert! 😊
Phil that's awesome piece love the colors great Job
Glad you like it, Rich, thank you!
Absolutely stunning!
I'm glad you like it, Reise, thank you!
Really lovely work Phil. I also like large irregular platters and have done quite a few.
😊
Phil, I think this is my favorite piece so far! Absolutely stunning! This will make a beautiful wall hanging!
Thanks so much, Tina! It's pretty special to me, too. 😊
Another excellent platter 💕🇬🇧
I'm glad you like it, Maud, thank you! 😊
Do har gjort det igen. Vacker mycket vackert . Ilike it.
Tack! 😃
THAT IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME CHERRY BURL PIECE! YOU ARE A FANTASTIC ARTIST BLESSED BY THE LORD...🙄☝️❤🙏
Thank you, Matthew! I never even considered it could be a burl but that seems to be what others are saying, as well. I was quite surprised to find that grain inside!
Awesome Phil, a great piece!!!
Many thanks, Jeff, especially for taking your time to watch and comment! 😊
Beautiful design.
😊
It's always a treat to see you work your magic on such an unusual piece 👌
😊
You are so talented I would of throw it across the room before I got it done. 😂 But it looks awesome
Thank you! 😊
Brilliant Phil love the work
Thank you, Alan! 😊

I agree, great piece of wood. Thank you, Scott!

Phil
Sweet piece, thanks for the video.
I relax in the evening, after hard day's,by watching your wood turning.
Life is difficult right now , but it will hopefully get better . But to watch you bring out the form and beauty of a simple piece of wood is the most pleasant of ways to relax. Thank you.
Thank you very much, Debra! I wish for you pleasant times ahead, much as you have brought me. 😊
Thanks for the
Its beautiful Phil!!
Thanks, Mark! 😊
Good evening Phil this wood grain is breathtakingly stunning, it makes me think of velvet the way it shines. I love the natural edge around the platter it is really awesome.
Howdy Kobie! I bought this piece of wood at a yard sale, along with two other pieces. It was leaning against the wall behind a door. I don't think they even knew it was there but I could see some of the grain and had to have it. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful pieces of wood I've ever had the opportunity to work with. I'm so glad you like it, too!
Phil
That wood is amazing and you did a fantastic job with it. Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks, Kathie! 😊
Phil, I really enjoy your videos! I, especially enjoy your comments as you are working on a particularly hard piece. As mentioned in other comments, I really like your honesty and if you make a mistake the way you admit it and how you solve the problem! Please keep the videos coming!
Cool, thanks a lot, Roger! 😊
You can only do so much with what you have, and I think it is absolutely gorgeous.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you so much, J'Lyssa! One of my favorites! 😊
That is the best looking hunk of cherry I have ever seen. You did it justice. THanks
The platter aint bad either eh!!?? 🤣🤣
What a great-looking piece of wood! Nice work, Phil. Glad you have the patience to work with a complicated grain like that.
Thank you, Jonathan!
You are one brave man. I have never attempted anything with that size diameter. I am impressed. Once again a beautiful piece.
I'm glad you like it, Donald, thank you!
Absolutely Beautiful Phil! Thank you 😁👍
Many thanks, Terrie! 😊
Morning Phil... (coffee wake-up)...It is a pleasure watching you explore and explain a new adventure on your lathe...As an old manual machinist I cringed slightly watching you work with your long sleeves...oh well...please don't get hurt...I look forward to your next adventure...Beautiful piece and wonderfully executed....This is FUN...now more coffee and explore some of your older stuff....Thanks....TM
Yeah, I know about the sleeves. It was one of the first things they taught us in 7th grade shop class. I do try to be careful about it but, man, it's cooold out there in the winter time!
Going back through your videos Phil & spotted this & thought, that’s going to be one to watch. Certainly not disappointed. What a great piece of wood to start with. Some of the features look like it had a burl that penetrated inwards & the bird’s eyes are really nice. I’d call that a gallery piece. Would make an excellent wall hanger or a standing piece stood on a support plynth. I like it a lot, great job.
All the best from the UK
Geof
That wood was such a lucky find! I got it at a yard sale, along with a couple more pieces. I don't know if they are burl like this one, I guess I should plane them a little to find out. It was a surprise for me, that's for sure! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Geof!
Wow Phil!..awsome garage sale find!...beautiful piece..great job!
Beautiful beautifully sculptureed. If not hanging on the wall then somehow free standing. I don't know what kind of wood it is. I call it yummy grain.
Thank you, Glenda! It turns out I was wrong when I called this Birdseye Cherry. It's actually a Cherry burl. And to think it came from a yard sale! I agree, it's beautiful grain.
Stunning piece of work - and you make it look so easy!
So glad you like it, Jim! Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Another great piece Phil, thank you.
One of my favorites, Jane, thank you!
Beautiful piece of burl, Phil! Magnificent display piece.
Billy
Yup, you're right Billy, it's burl. That never occurred to me but it seems to be the consensus. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Beautiful piece Phil!!
Thank you, Lee! I wish I could get my hands on more of this beautiful wood.
Phil
Very special piece! Well Done!
Thanks, Peet! It turns out to be one of my favorites and, the wife even likes it!
You did great job my friend 👍🏼
Thank you, Tomas! I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
Stunning platter. You sure have some interesting wood. Love it
I got this piece, along with two other nice pieces, but not this nice, at a yard sale of all places. I think it was $7.00 total. Don't get good deals like that very often!
Thanks again, CG!
Phil
Fantastic piece. I loved seeing that grain pop when you applied the oil.
Thank you, David! It was quite a surprise to find that grain inside.
Love it!
nice job, that was a great find, at a yard sale, I really loved the grain. Keep up the great work, I look forward to your videos.
I bought another piece of cherry at the same time, only it's bigger. I hope it turns out to be of the same quality. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Barb!
Nice job, Phil.
Thank you so much, George!
Lovely patient work. Really nice result.
Thank you so much, Geoff! It is one of my most challenging pieces and a favorite, as well.
I ĺove it .
Me too, the wood was such a lucky find. Thanks, Hubert! 😊
Beautiful!
Thank you very much, Stargazer! It's one of my favorites.
Phil
This is a lovely platter, with amazing, complex grain! Those large gaps do make it a "bumpy ride," don't they? Well done!
Yes they do! I'm glad you like it, Stephanie, thank you!
Love this one
Thank you very much, Alastair! This wood was a lucky garage sale find. I certainly wish I could find more like it!
Phil
That piece presented some real challenges Phil! It looks like the edge of a burl because of the grain going in so many directions. If it s cherry, it's a huge one. It turned out to be a beautiful piece. Good job.
"I am still envious of the deal you got on your new lathe...." LOL
"It's a burl" seems to be the consensus, Charlie. That didn't even occur to me! It if hadn't been for the deal, I would probably still be turning on my old Delta, which was very good to me. Thank you, Charlie!
Hello Mr Madronawoodworks .....That looks nice . To get into the different size " slots " I used in my prehistoric cookie " POWERTEC 11301 Sanding Drum Kit " 13$ on Amazon and used the same drill and 2 inch pad sandpaper
Hi Billy from down under, what a beautiful piece of wood, I cannot get any cherry in Australia, one day I will drive out too the cherry area and see if I can get some. Beautiful piece.
Kind regards Steve Sayers
SJS Wood turning
Australia
Hi Steve! If you can get some cherry I'm sure you will enjoy turning it. When it's just normal grain it turns easily and finishes beautifully. Good luck and thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Very nice Sir.
So nice of you, Rex!😊
MAGNIFIQUE
Thank you so much, Bochereauauger!
Absolutely love cherry burl. We do get a decent amount of it here in Georgia, but you do have to go looking for it. That is one big burl. I have a cherry tree in my back yard with one about a third that size. Not ready to cut it off yet. But i do look forward to the day I can turn it. They make such beautiful pieces. Great job, my favorite so far.
It's one of my faves, too. I wish I could find more of it. This was one of two pieces I found at a yard sale. I don't think the other one is a burl, but both for four bucks was a deal! Thanks again, Timothy!
That wasn't a deal........ that was a steal. Even around here where you can find it, if they know what they have you would pay $50-$100 for that piece, unturned. Obviously they didn't know what they had. That's the great part about buying rough cut, something truly beautiful may be hiding in plain sight. May the second piece be as beautiful as the first.
It's true, I don't think they knew it was a burl, but neither did I! I forgot, it was actually three pieces of wood. The third one is also cherry. It's about 4"x6" by about four feet long. Don't know what I will do with that, but it's there if I need it. All three pieces were behind an open door. I just peeked back there and asked. I don't think the guy even knew they were there. Some days ya just get lucky! ;)
Lucky is better then smart any day. Plane the 4' piece to see if it's burl. Hand plane along the 2 edges just enough to see the grain. If it is you could cut it into blocks and glue them together into a platter size unit. Lot of work, but with burl it's usually worth it. Just thinking out loud, sometimes too loud. lol
I'm going to try something like this for a wall clock Bravo!
Great idea, David! Happy Turning!
Phil
That would make a great clock.
Kenneth would you please contact me at madronawoodworks@gmail.com
Phil
Hi Phil. Beautiful work mate. I know this is an old video but I’m looking at similar things for some Tasmanian timber called myrtle.. It has the same awesome finish and I really love your work and your explanation as you go. I’d like to send you some pics but I’m not sure how. Anyway your work is lovely.
Thank you
Tassy Greg
Thank you, Greg! We have Myrtle here in the states. Don't know if it's the same but it grows in Oregon. Beautiful wood. Best of luck with yours!
Phil, when you use your square scraper lift your right hand to put it into a negative rake it will cut cleaner. Otherwise a great job.
Good advice, Paul, thank you!
Be still, my beating heart...
It does look like birdseye cherry burl to me. Thankyou for your time.
Yes Vincent, "it's a burl" seems to be the consensus. That thought never even occurred to me! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, much appreciated!
The Birds Eye Cherry plate was spectacular - I would be very interested in buying that piece. Is that possible?
Regards / Dick Hampton
Denver, No. Carolina
PS: When I retired I bought a used Shopsmith, now after watching you I wish that I would have bought a nice lathe like what you have.
I'm so pleased that you like this piece enough to buy it, Dick, thank you! 😊 I'm unable to sell any of my work. There just isn't time for packing and shipping. Maybe one day I'll have a helper.
Me: Birdseye Cherry Platter that sounds safe enough....Phil: Look at this massive piece of wood that massively out of round and full of holes and barely fits on my latheMe; Yup another classic Madrona Wood Works turning! In all seriousness Phil that turned out beautifully,. Great work as always!
Me: Oh boy, Andy commented. I'm in for some entertainment!
You: Classic Andy dialogue.
I just love it when I see your name, Andy. You always brighten my day!
Every single one of your Videos makes me smile Phil! it does bring fear to my Health and Safety mind though
LOL!
It definitely looks like burl grain but I can't see any "eyes" on my phone but I take your word if you can. I've never seen many burls on standing cherry trees but understand they are pretty common on cherry in DE.
Turns out it is a Cherry burl, Paul. I didn't know that at the time. The grain just reminded me of birdseye.
