I’m not a wood turner but I can see your work is top rate. The thought of being in a cozy dry shop with rain on a metal roof brings back fond memories.
Beautiful bowl and as I told my husband , If I were in that shed and listening to the rain on the tin roof I would go to sleep. It reminded me of staying with my grandparents when I was growing up and listening to the rain on their tin roof especially when we went to bed. Love that sound. Back to the bowl, I am looking forward to seeing it finished. All your work is remarkable. God Bless!
Glad I took the time to watch this tonight. You always do a nice job reading the wood and getting an attractive shape. You're changing the way I look at logs and think about the possibilities. Thanks!
No need to apologize because of the rain. I can hear the audio just fine and the rain hitting the roof of your shop just makes your video peaceful maybe it just me. Keep up the great work!
And another wonderful turn! Man you guys get some rain! I bet you couldn’t even hear it when you were turning. Only when you stopped. Great time watching this one my friend.
I truly enjoy watching you turn it is easy to see that you truly love making things on your lathe. I have just started to turn we would all my lathe I am learning a lot from watching and listening to you thank you very much for sharing
The game planning on this piece is extraordinary. This is a big help to anyone that wants to do a lip over turn or even a large end turn. Like seeing your methods on the underside. Thanks for your time, Al. Lee
I have had very good luck with natural edges when I use a sanding "Mop" from Klingspor. It smoothes the bark roughness a little without making it look sanded. You are an inspiration to us.
Awesome as always Al!! I am glad you went a little more in detail on how you make them. I am wanting to try one but it will be small. I have a mini lathe so I do what I can. Take care my friend!!
Thanks for watching and the compliment my friend. Well the approach is the same only the scale is different. I need to get me a mini to bring along to the jobsites Take care
A really interesting project Al. Many learning ideas for me here.I learnt my lesson the hard way this week when my fingers got whacked by a "ghost" Thanks for sharing.
Hi Al, That is such a beautiful piece and I love the way the sides droop over! I would love to try something like this but I think I would have to have the EMT's do a sleep over and make sure they have plenty of bandages!!! LOL I know I have to crawl before I walk but it's very tempting to stand up and walk with the big guys,,,,as long as I'm not walking on crutches!! LOL For what it's worth I'm retired and have nothing but time to watch your videos,,,,we're not all in a hurry! Thanks for another great video,,, Tom
Thank you my friend. not thrilled with this piece but the lesson I think serves the purpose for those that had some unanswered questions.. No rush my friend I believe one needs to walk before he runs LOL.
Hey Al. Very instructional video. BTW - Just catching up on some of your videos and noticed the Philadelphia Eagles T shirt. How bout those birds winning the big one!!!!!
Al, another awesome piece of art - I was wondering if you ever thought of combining this style with the near translucent wood you have used before and make a lamp out of this. Putting the bulb in the bowl cavity to shine up and emitting a soft glow thru the wood. When I get better skilled I might try it but I was just curious about your thoughts. Again, great workmanship and video - always a help to a newbie
Wow even though I mentioned that on fb. you were the first to mention it. The face looks very much like my grandson's toy a "Groot" but if you look closely on the bottom half there is a perfect torso of a women with the back towards you. actually shows up on the icon image for this turning.
Very cool ..... has plenty of character! Heh heh ..... at first, I thought you had a rock tumbler going in the background - until you mentioned the rain. Take care.
Thanks for watching and the good question. over the past couple of years I have turned many pieces oriented this way. If the piece is turned thin enough the pit is not an issue. on a rare case it might develop small checking but to me that isn't a set back. the most beautiful pieces you can imagine in natural edge have the pit in them.
Thanks for watching nothing to correct but that is the method I use to refresh my sharp edge. it lasts me about 3 turnings unless I am cutting some extremely hard wood
Once the bowl is hollowed, would you suggest flipping it around again and hollowing out the inside of the base, to reduce the chances of a split? Thanks my friend. Also, have you ever tried "aging" a piece with a baking soda solution? I've seen a video on it where it can really bring out the grain/pattern of a flat board when applied on unfinished wood. I think it was referred to as chemical staining.
Thanks for watching and the suggestion my friend but I doubt very much this will split and if it does you know me I will like if it does it just means it will get it's own character LOL. Take care
Rebel Turner Thanks for the reply. I was thinking more for advice. Would there be a reason this might not work or risk your turning? (Billowing out the base stem.)
The base and the bowl is thin enough not to pose a problem even if it distorts a little witch would be welcomed. Although I doubt the stem will create a split and if it does it would reflect on the base for sure. What nature does to it I am more than likely be willing to accept it unless it fell apart. LOL I will show results in a few weeks.I do appreciate your concern and suggestion I am just not worried about it.
You're right it is difficult to understand you with the rain, but it was easier to understand when your face was on camera when you spoke. It helps to be able to read your lips when you talk.
Thank you my friend. I'm new to this craftsmanship. Touched on it when I was in 10th grade for wood shop, but didn't have a lathe until now! I cut my own maple wood w/sawmill to make stand for lathe. The maple smells like dirty socks, what gives w/that? Anyway, I'm very interested in learning all I can before I begin and hurt myself or others since this can be very dangerous without having researched it beforehand. So we continue...

Thanks my friend Apology was for the event I could not be heard over the rain.

Hey Al. Very instructional video. BTW - Just catching up on some of your videos and noticed the Philadelphia Eagles T shirt. How bout those birds winning the big one!!!!!

there is a face in your bowl, absolutely gob-smacked, hope I have some chance in the future of trying something similar

I will have to look again
Maybe one day you can show us your video setup, if you already have let me know and I'll search for it

WOW ! Nice work
You're a braver man than I am, mate.
Thank you my friend I am glad to hear that you liked it. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. Take care
With the pith being in this piece how to you make sure it doesn’t split later

could you go up from the bottom and hallow out yout stem and plug it so it would not split?
I has not split as of yet
beautiful project i like it
Thank you very much I am glad you liked it
Beautiful work my friend! I liked it!
Thanks for watching and the compliment my friend. Take care
Аleksey Bek i
correct me if I am wrong, but do you actually grind down your tools as well from sharpening them?
Thanks for watching nothing to correct but that is the method I use to refresh my sharp edge. it lasts me about 3 turnings unless I am cutting some extremely hard wood
Hi there Al another very fine piece i would say and these pieces do you sell them or do you put them in art galleries.
I always like your videos!
Thank you my friend for watching and commenting. Always happy to hear that. Take care.

Great Idea !!
Thanks for watching my friend.
Is most of the wood you turn still green?
(River Birch: Betula nigra)
Al,is that rain we hear in the background
Yep poured all weekend
wow verrygood jobe i love it
You're right it is difficult to understand you with the rain, but it was easier to understand when your face was on camera when you spoke. It helps to be able to read your lips when you talk.
Pretty awesome. ..Think you should really start to sell your stuff
Thank you my friend for watching and commenting. Take care. Someday someone just might be interested in my work for now just having fun.
Same here
LOOK GREAT.
l appreciate the difficulty , but the result was very plaisant, l like the shape, l just not a yellow persone
Don't get too burned out all at once watching my videos. There are many great wood turners out there. I do appreciate you watching and am honored.
It is better if the base diameter is a little smaller I think
It really is a matter of taste. I do see many pieces ruined by the base being too small.
Top show
Please be more careful getting clean audio.
You do realize it was pouring outside and the sound you hear was rain on a tin roof.
@@AlFurtado Thanks for your reply.
Definitely not a project for the beginner.
Thank you my friend for watching and commenting.. Take care

Al, will you post your email. I will send you a private message about me. It's about me serious.Your bowl is awesome.....!
Thanks for watching my friend. I guess you lost my email from before. Well here is another you can use. alfurtado@rebelturner.com . Take care
Trop de bavardage , dommage pour ceux qui ne comprennent pas la langue 😕
