Mine had the same issue. Took ten minutes of wiggling to get it out of the tank. The rubber piece at the the base of the gas cap appears to have swollen with age, and catches on the black nylon(plastic) trim ring on the opening of the tank. I used a razor to remove a tiny bit of the (red/orange) rubber piece on the bottom of the gas cap that appeared to be “flared” out, then I removed the black nylon (zytel?) trim ring and used a dremel with a sanding bit to increase the inside diameter just a bit - just don’t overdo it. Gas cap now works perfectly.

I guess so Lee. The engine and frame are similar. It should be easier as there is no integrated head light unit on the 990.
I have an SMT 2012 and the fuel cap is very hard to remove, is there a trick? Thanks!

Do you know weather the ecu’s are under the tank or under the seat?

Must be under the seat Jay. The ecu interface to plug in to is under the seat next to the rear light.
