I had heard from you guys that there was definitely gay vibes so I was so excited to sit down for this. Let me tell you... what I didn't expect was the tears but I guess this is what I'm doing now. i love love love this movie!! the queer metaphors were THERE; the "corrupting influence," the "sending him away," the concept of "outing" and bonding over a shared secret, Alberto's "stay there, you're still safe," the grandma's little speech about acceptance at the end... ugh I love it so much. I also think it's a great representation of a friendship between 12/13-year-old kids that's kind of encroaching on romance but not there yet. People forget that queer kids had childhood crushes on their friends too!
And, of course, Giulia is an icon ;) the relationship between her father and Alberto broke me lol
I also love how they did Julia's dad, He's a giant of a man and looks hard but is a good caring person...
After Alberto is outed and Julia's dad goes out looking for him in case he's in danger
That's an amazing scene for telling us who he is
So how albertos dad Is a dead beat reminds me of how some family's will abandon or excluded queer children

I'm a 64 year old gay man. This is my favorite animated movie of all time. Wile Luca and Alberto may, or may not actually be gay, this film is loaded from start to finish with gay allegories and life lessons for anyone that does not fit into the norms of society. I chose to believe that Luca and Alberto are truly in love with each other. It is the pure innocent love between a twelve year old (Luca), and a thirteen year old that are just beginning to learn about themselves and their true feelings. Alberto got the father figure he needed, and Luca gets to live his real dream and to learn. Giulia is the best ally possible, her dad is a huge tough man with the softest heart possible. Grandma, just the best. Daniella and Lorenzo are learning to let Luca have some independence and grow into who he is meant to be. It is a great movie. Good reaction video. Thumbs up.
What makes the film work so well in my opinion is that the story can be interpreted straight or not and everything would and does still work story and character wise...
Fun fact: Luberto is now canon as of 2024!!

You can't convince me that this movie wasnt gay. I have watched this movie about 6 times and everytime it hits so close home and I end up bawling. The metaphors in here have really resonated with me about how I was outed by my parents and my school and I thought I was going to be have to be sent away. I'm not in the best place to be fully out but it is better. Luca and Alberto were the gay kings we needed and they did not disappoint!
Also the music made me cry so much because I'm a music nerd and it was just so powerful on top of the message of the story. I feel like the music was so overlooked!

Incidentally, the ending song "Citta Vuota" is about two lovers sad because they have been separated and how lonely they are without each other. Make of that what you will.
I know!! And here's another thing: there's this other song in the film (it's called "Fatti Mandara Della Mamma a Prendere Il Latte," I think) that's essentially about someone being jealous about his crush spending more time with someone else than with him. And....if you've seen the movie, you know a major part of the story is Alberto being jealous when Luca spends more time with Giulia than with him, so....

I remember hearing everyone talking about this movie. And I watched it. Boy, was I not prepared for the wholesome emotional damage that occurred. It was a nice movie. It did its job and didn't overstay its welcome. Or throw in any unnecessary last minute plot twists or surprise antagonist that usually happens in these movies

In my head, they have the best summers growing up and eventually when Luca is done with school him and Alberto get married, Luca is an Automotive engineer who designed his own type of bike and Alberto has a worldwide restaurant franchise with Massimo (Giulia’s dad) while Giulia is a world renowned race-car driver. Luca’s parents travel the world and his grandma is livin’ it up with her gal pals in the city of Portorosso❤️

Also in the credits there are lots of little drawings about Luca and Alberto’s life after the movie and we see Luca showing his transformation to other classmates and they look impressed. Based on those it looks like both Alberto and Luca are enjoying themselves at school and in the town!

Alberto and Luca aren't exactly "gay", but it's kind of hard not to see them that way, but they're still so fucking adorable! (And yes, I want them to be gay and apparently that almost happened and the director's not against it). 😍😍😍🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈

If anything, I see Luca getting romantically involved with Giulia much more easily.
The movie mostly is about general acceptance of who you are, rather than any specific acceptance.
@@PerfectAlibi1 I think it’s a great movie for interpretation and I think it’s cool how viewers interpret the movie in different ways, it makes sense a lot people view it as being gay / acceptance because that could resonate with a lot off ppl and there’s alot of symbolism that could be interpreted as that- but it’s perfectly fine to just see them as friends too :D

Lots of people gay or straight or whatever, have dated or had crushes on their friends...
There's also a lot of metaphors that could apply to gay, such as family nob acceptance. A "bad influence"
The whole outing scene etc.
It can be interpreted straight (pun intended) or from that perspective which is good writing.

this is my favorite movie EVER!! I've watched it a million times and I'm so glad that youre reacting to it!
The fact that them being queer is actually canon ❤️🩹 The little hints of gayness here and there like "you're still safe" are so cute. It kinda shows what was it like being queer in the late 50's italy. You were safe when nobody knew. And I absolutely love the ending where they are accepted. I personally like to think the two grandmas at the end of the movie who are revealed to be seamonsters are lesbians and that is kinda their coming out. I love this movie it's one of my favorites 😘

watched this movie with my friends and they got so mad when i was pointing out all the little gay symbolism. the ending part was literally so cute.

I mean I would be mad too. Not that I'm homophobic or anything I just want to watch the movie. I don't care who's gay I don't care who's straight. Plus you need proof they are gay.
@@Mothobius the reason why queer people in general or so excited about representation or even *potential representation is because we don't really have much of that in media, especially kid's media from Disney. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Tangled, Frozen -- all straight romance.
All that many of us queer kids grew up seeing are movies where we didn't see ourselves in media at all, where being straight is the default (even your comment about needing proof that they're gay alludes to that, as opposed to the automatic assumptions that they're straight?). The reason why we're excited about Luca is because it's finally a movie we can relate to (and the og commenter is right, there is a LOT of gay symbolism in Luca).
I know to you it's just a movie, but to us it's so much more. It's feeling *seen* for the first time in a kid's movie. (I hope this helps explain why it's such a big deal and why Luca means a lot to queer people.) I hope you enjoy the movie, but please, let us enjoy it too

This was an amazing, thought out movie and I'm so glad young children have this type of movie for them to watch. 🌊🦑
What makes the film work so well to me is that you can interpret the film as gay based or played straight as it were and it still works story and character wise...
Afterall Best friends can become romantic be they gay, straight, or whatever too.
Julia and her dad are amazingly written and great characters
The parents are great and it shows how much they care but don't understand...
Etc.
I also really like the film's use of art style, character design and facial animation, writing and character development.

‼️Spoiler alert‼️ The ending of this movie reminds me of the train scene in "Call me by your name" (I definitely recommend it if you haven’t seen it) where ellio and oliver say goodbye.I think this film is about being different,trying to fit in,trying to find your people and how people are afraid of the ones who are not like them. Like grandma said some will accept us,some won’t but we will find our way eventually.💗

The big straight debate is we are reading too much into the gay subtext. "They are just kids, let them be kids". But for the gays we see this subtext that they can't understand. It could be just two really close friends but there is something more there implied.

Truly I see the entire movie as a metaphor like being gay, or just different in general (Im gay, so I'd like to see it as such, but if anything - its a metaphor for racism lol). 1: the 2 boys like eachother, and are different (the same kind of different, like being gay) and are outcasted in the society around them (such as the stereotypes of gay people, and not accepting them as they are, and calling what we do a sin, etc)..... OR.... 2: Him, Alberto, AND HIS ENTIRE SIDE OF THE SPECIES are all fish people, such as black people in america so long ago - where they werent accepted, they were bullied, attacked, hurt, and disliked.
While you wait for young royals in November, you should do Skam Norway. I, like you, saw heartstopper, was ecommended Young Royals, and kept seeing recommendations about Skam and I just ignored it really, thinking it couldn't top HS or YR. I WAS WRONG. It's the best of them! Season 3 Skam can be watched alone but I did them all, and it's so so so good. You would love it. And I really wanna watch reactions of it haha. You won't regret it, I've watched your reactions since HS, this show would be your fav. I can feel it.

I´m hoping Pixar will make a sequel of this, it would probably take very long since now they want to focus on new projects, because it´s story can be expanded in so many ways, like it could be about Alberto going to Genova spend some weeks with Luca and Giulia maybe they could find out what happened to his father and they could find out that there are many other sea creatures living in human cities just like them
Indeed we need a sequel or tv series, they make you want to see more of these characters.

But back go Luca, absolutely love this movie too 😍 The soundtrack is just gorgeous, they did such a wonderful job with this movie. Look at that water animation! The credits are themselves are so cute, you definitely gotta watch them if you didn't.
The writer/director has not confirmed any gay analogies for the movie, but has wholeheartedly supported that interpretation. The undertones are definitely there, they're everywhere.

I think I heard that Giulia was supposed to be gay, but they weren't sure how to add that in without giving her a crush, idk, something like that. But honestly, the fact that the main friendship group is three gay kids is kind of iconic.
I know!! I heard about that, too!😄 It makes me so happy to see representation like this in a Pixar film, even if the creators weren't able to outright say/show a lot of it in the movie itself. :') Every bit of good representation is important in my opinion.
