Great project. You heard about that Swedish couple who dashed off a Jag D type? They won against Jaguar Corp. on the cease, desist and cut up the copy. So your body source may be safe? Stock up on expanding foam insulation for the voids-will add a solid sound when thumped. Also good for weather protection ...Prime that hidden metal well.

Hey I love the project, I had recent (remote, way remote) ideas of putting that SLK drivetrain in a 190SL. Then the brain started going about how to find a repro 300SL body and BOOM here you guys are doing it. This is brilliant, love how you are attacking it. Keep at it fellows, cheers!

Kindig Customs did one of these and that video is well worth watching. To make it the same as the original was an interesting process.

This is coming together lovely, I have owned a couple of AC Cobra replica's (Cobretti Viper & Pilgrim Sumo) both had very little if any support under the front wings which flexed/shock a bit when driving... your build looks very solid indeed. Keep up the good work... this is very enjoyable viewing. Thank you guys

That's a very challenging build, particularly concerning the overall structural integrity of the finished body as well as getting the loose panels attached to fit. One suggestion, when welding items like the sill addition to the original body all attachment points should be reinforced. This can be done by plating the body attachment points before welding on the items. it's pretty pointless just welding on to thin body metal. Suggestions by other posters as to the use of foam are very relevant.

Can't wait to see this beauty finished.
I know it's not what you want to do, but in case someone (with very deep pockets) would want to build a small series of this: check out JP Performance Golf 3 project. 3D scans of body, engine and suspension combined with a CAD model of a tube frame.

This is very English. 60 years ago you would have been removing the rusty body from a Ford Popular and replacing it with a sporty looking fibreglass shell ... 😊😊

I am impressed with the supports that you have fabricated. Would it be worth beefing up the side step supports to provide some additional side impact protection and will you be using a silicon type adhesive between the framework and body throughout to prevent squeaks and creaking to prevent it from sounding like an old boat. Also are you using an expanding foam material in the voids etc to prevent vibration and noise from the body. I have never undertaken anything like this myself so I am asking rather than recommending. The donor car is remarkably rust and rot free for 20 year old car that is after you removed the outer panels that were a bit scruffy in the usual places. My wife has owned several SLKs over the past 20 odd years and they may make a great touring car. You certainly chose the right engine. Onwards and upwards.good luck with the build. When can I place an order!

Hi David there’s a lot more welding and fabrication to do until we are 100% happy with the integrity of the car
Yes we’ll be using a silicone bonding adhesive to secure the body as you say last thing we want is squeaks. A few people have mentioned expanding foam so may look into that, thanks for the comment 👍🏻

Bad Chad is building a tanker truck loosely based on a 1930s Texaco tanker called the doodlebug using all square tubing on a RV chassis , that's getting a steel skin though , I was asked to repair a right off TVR Griffith 500 , that has a tube chassis the owner had cut out the bent tubing and used second hand tubing to replace , he had another TVR that was in worse condition I had to repair the Griffith and make molds of the front end and bonnet to use to fix the the other one , I never got to do the other he took the molds and the car paid and never came , thank god for that LOL .
