The greatness of Derek is that he always puts the music as a whole first , even when he solos, it not about him and his chops, that makes him such unique talent
Playing long solos is, in my opinion, never in favor of the song or in favor of the band. I downloaded a cover of a soul song from Tedeschi Trucks band and made a fade out where a long solo started.
His solos are never too long - ever. It gives the other players a bit of a break especially if they sing as well. No, that is what make him so special I agree.....he doesn't do long flourishes and does not add what is not needed. He is a master.
