I remember hearing My Best Friends girl on the radio and then staying up to hear the complete album at midnight on the local FM rock station. I went out bought the album and put it on a cassette tape so I could play when I went to wrestling camp. I had never heard anything quite like it and was so hooked on it that I hardly listened to anything else. I is still such a fresh sound. I think Elliot's guitar solos are what hooks me in. He is really awesome.
Hi. I was a teenager in the second half of the 70’s in the Boston area. Loved the Cars. First saw them early on in a great lineup - The Cars opening for The Robin Trower Band who I also loved being a Hendrix fan. I think the venue was The Orpheum Theatre in Boston. Thank you! And on another note, I had saved all concert tickets stubs back then. I went the concerts almost every week because I had money from a paper route. But now that I look at them, the torn half I got at the door, half don’t have the band name on them. Tickets were small, cost $7.50 on average and weren’t very well designed. I wanted to make a shadow box of 70’s concerts attended. I caught all the good bands. Bummer.
I was a junior in high school when the Cars came out and it was love at first listen. My band was performing most of thier first album as house band at Fantastic Fenwicks in Charlottesville Va. None of us were old enough to be in there. I've always felt a kinship with Elliot. Still do.
Elliot Easton should be rated in the top five Guitar Players ever. Soft spoken but, extremely educated in music. It would be great if Elliot Easton, Gregg Hawks, and David Robinson would get together and produce one more Cars Album.
I am a huge cars fan! Elliot maybe does not agree, but I always thought that Elliot should have been given song writing credit on many songs, and also Greg on some. God this is great. I love The Cars. When I was young my family would drive to Iowa for X-mas to see grandparents, cousins..allthat. My dad and I would listen to The Cars (and others) late into the night in an old Chevy Nova on a stereo system he had wired out himself. It was magical and The Cars are such an huge piece of those memories. Thank you for the stories about how it all came to be.
This is flat out brilliant. I"ve watched quite a few interviews with Elliot Easton in an effort to understand more about his playing, composition and general knowledge of music and bands. Lots of good videos . . but this. . .tops what I've seen so far. I remember Jimmy Vivino from his days on Conan O'Brien. (Seems he didn't like to wear shoes while leading the house band ) so you know Jimmy is going to conduct a solid interview based on his own musical chops and experience. Well done Jimmy. And thanks to Elliot Easton. . .truly one of the finest guitar players in modern music. Watching this was a treat.

Elliot's leads were always so amazing and their debut album is one of the finest freshman efforts ever! Thank you for this informative and wonderful interview!
The coolest scenario of Elliot Easton is not on stage rocking out to each finely crafted note, it's his shoving off to the studio wearing black jeans tucked into black and white tall Cowboy Boots with graphics of musical notes. Then, loading a Strat or Tele into the back seat of a British Green Jaguar XJ6. The camera now pans to the car's (no pun intended) grill and the symbolism of the finely crafted Roll Royce style grill. (Royalty and Success). A big switch from being a kid visiting music stores and staring into guitar brochures dreaming away...
In my mind Elliot Easton punctuated the sound of the Cars, his soloing and composition of the solos and guitar parts were so set apart, he really is an unsung hero not only of the 80s but just simply a solid meat and potatoes guitar player all around kind of like Neil Giraldo from Pat benatar, who is an amazing guitar player again scorching solos amazing composition, Elliot Easton is badass.
I hum his solos out lout all the time; they're so damned catchy and brilliantly played. I don't do that with many other guitars. Eddie, Edge and Elliot.
One more comment, I agree that Elliot's crafted solos were so impeccable all the time. Totally George Harrison way to play with the melody with nothing frivolous at all. " The Best" Donald Fagan of Steely Dan was one of my favorite writers also. As Elliot stated ,we learned all about "the hook" as bringing the listener into the transition giving the song magic. Example:Bye Bye Love with the late great Ben Orr singing sexy and passionately. Awesome !!
Just found you - as a long time guitar picker and professional grinner , I'm all about your content - You are very good at this - you're very relatable - and you ask smart questions - Thanks - you got a fan in the stable yard on the backside of Churchill Downs
Jimmy, such a great conversation with one of my all time favorite players, EE. Asking all the best questions, I was getting stressed as time was running out. I’m so glad and can’t wait for part 2! I’d really like to know if Rik played many rhythm parts on the records or was it all EE bounced down?
That was the most nerdy, geeked out interview with guitar players I've ever seen. I loved it! If you're not a guitar player, you might want to just move along 🤪
Great exchange with Elliot talking about Iphone addicted kids. You guys live to play and enjoy being with other musicians and lots of fans. Sad that the younger generation is missing out on so much.
MaybeImAmazed100 asked: Elliot: I heard that your solos on the first album were recorded in something like a day and half. Is that true and were all the solos already written? Elliot will answer asap...
Yes, I did all the guitar parts for the 1st Cars album in a day and a half. All the solos were already prepared except for "Doncha Stop", which was improvised on the spot.
The best interview in my opinion of a rock star; LA college of music, Let’s Talk Music withe guest Joe Walsh. A guy name Native Wayne did the interview. After he asked the question you never heard him until Joe was completed finished answering no matter how long his answers were. Respectfully
What made the Cars sound like a New Wave band were the tight arrangements; the self-possessed, almost cynical vocals; the icy, clinical keyboard sounds; and the soulful leads by Easton in contrast to the rest of the mix.

Just wow!!
What a great interview❤
I hum his solos out lout all the time; they're so damned catchy and brilliantly played. I don't do that with many other guitars. Eddie, Edge and Elliot.
Fun interview
One more comment, I agree that Elliot's crafted solos were so impeccable all the time. Totally George Harrison way to play with the melody with nothing frivolous at all. " The Best" Donald Fagan of Steely Dan was one of my favorite writers also. As Elliot stated ,we learned all about "the hook" as bringing the listener into the transition giving the song magic. Example:Bye Bye Love with the late great Ben Orr singing sexy and passionately. Awesome !!
Wow- that was awesome. Thank you Jimmy, and Elliot!
Just found you - as a long time guitar picker and professional grinner , I'm all about your content - You are very good at this - you're very relatable - and you ask smart questions - Thanks -
you got a fan in the stable yard on the backside of Churchill Downs
So fabulous- love you guys! ❤️🎼❤️
Jimmy, such a great conversation with one of my all time favorite players, EE. Asking all the best questions, I was getting stressed as time was running out. I’m so glad and can’t wait for part 2! I’d really like to know if Rik played many rhythm parts on the records or was it all EE bounced down?
AWESOME 👌
THANKS AGAIN JIMMY 😊
Jimmy, great fun to see you in your element. Excellent show, thanks.
Awesome interview thank you
Great…Great interview
He was playing those first Cars solos at age 23.
Great show Jimmy and Eliot...
Bloomfield Cropper Dupree...
I know we're in good company...
Very interesting, thank you!!
MaybeImAmazed100 asked:
Elliot: I heard that your solos on the first album were recorded in something like a day and half. Is that true and were all the solos already written?
Elliot will answer asap...
Yes, I did all the guitar parts for the 1st Cars album in a day and a half. All the solos were already prepared except for "Doncha Stop", which was improvised on the spot.
“You can’t tear something down from the outside”-truth by Jimmy Vivino
"The Fab Faux", what a brilliant sense of humor! This interview is so important to me!
EE is a monster, a humble, down-to-earth monster.
The best interview in my opinion of a rock star; LA college of music, Let’s Talk Music withe guest Joe Walsh. A guy name Native Wayne did the interview. After he asked the question you never heard him until Joe was completed finished answering no matter how long his answers were. Respectfully
A guitarist who GETS IT. Wise composition --- chief above chops....more miles per umphs.
What made the Cars sound like a New Wave band were the tight arrangements; the self-possessed, almost cynical vocals; the icy, clinical keyboard sounds; and the soulful leads by Easton in contrast to the rest of the mix.
Best first alblum Ever. Still sounds ridicous fresh ..even though have listened and played it 1000's times
Great interview! Great guy fellow lefty!
