Outside of David's voice in both versions the Official video visually tells the story and Conan is about the vision of instruments. Being a trained Cantor he has such amazing beautiful control of his voice.

I had this song played at my father's funeral. The original by Simon and Garfunkel was one of his favorite songs, but when my mother heard the Disturbed version she insisted on that one. Even the priest sang along with it and got teared up. I can't hear it now without thinking of my dad. Great job by David Draiman!

I read that David got a message from Paul Simon congratulating him on the cover, much like Trent Reznor sent a message to Johnny Cash when he covered hurt. Both artists put such a personal stamp on the song as to assume some ownership of it in the minds of many fans.

Danielle Williams - I recently discovered a new reaction group on TH-cam - I think their channel is very new. They have reacted to Disturbed's version of The Sound of Silence and it's very interesting to watch them and hear what they say (actually, read what they say because they do not speak English). They have never heard The Sound of Silence before, and have not been exposed to western world music, so their attempts to translate the meaning of the song are interesting, to say the least. th-cam.com/video/LDmeZnN2hHg/w-d-xo.html

To make this performance even more impressive, David Draiman was very sick during this performance; apparently he was sitting on the stool because there was concern he was going to fall over if he tried to perform while standing. @GretchTheZ Yes Sweetheart. I'm former U. S. Army 82nd Airborne Division Soldier. I was witness to the evidence left behind by the Nazi's. I only mentioned this because I'm a Baptist that had 2 Jewish Soldiers in my Squad. When we had time off we went to Auschwitz. It was so upsetting to us. I just had a hard time even trying to understand the cruelty. The only way I was even able to put what I saw in my rationale mind was like some people that believe that Adolf Hitler was the Antichrist. I grew up in rural North Carolina. And my 2 Jewish Buddies couldn't believe that I had never met a Jewish person in person until I met those two men. But Happy Hanukkah, hope I spelled that correctly. @GretchTheZ That by far is a Great explanation. Like I think I mentioned I was in the 82nd Airborne. They jumped on D-Day. Back when I joined in 1980 and after I moved up in rank. I was in for 12 years. I was deployed for Operation Urgent Fury in 25 October 1983 Grenada. Then in Desert Storm 1990-91.but earlier to pass one of the Sergeants exam. I had to study W. W. 2. One thing that resonated with me is God will not allow mankind to exterminate his people. Or any other people no matter Race, Creed, Religion. And in the U. S. We will not let it happen. Hello again from Orlando, Florida. 🤗🌴🐊😎😎😜🌞

This is brilliant, but now you have to check out the official video. The images are absolutely emotional and incredible. Please react to it! If you think you can't be more stunned by this version of this song, you're wrong. And the growling ... lol. Yeah. That's his deal, but he is also a clasically trained cantor, so his underlying musical training is full of technique. If you like metal ... which I'm assuming you don't ... Down With The Sickness will give you their true musical style (but the lyrics are meaningful and powerful even if that style's not your jam.) But some other of their beautiful songs are Hold Onto Memories and A Reason To Fight. His voice is incredible in any variation, it just depends on what you like. This is an anomaly for them, though, so don't be surprised.

So true, Melly Lynn. They've GOT to watch the original video. The first time I saw it I cried, had pins and needles and goosebumps all over my arms, and my body actually shook. I love Paul Simon and am so grateful to him for writing this song, but Disturbed's performance of it brings it to life in a way that nobody else ever has. And the original video in its stark black and white format with the background images is a visually stunning accompaniment that gives life and reality to the lyrics.

This song never fails to get me going emotionally. I can sit here having a chill day, nothing on my mind, and then I listen to this song, specifically by Disturbed, and I start tearing up. David Draiman is an incredible vocalist, I dare to say masterful. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert in Toronto a couple years ago just after the death of Prodigy's Keith Flint, which they addressed in combination with depression, addiction, and mental health. The whole show was incredible, but Sound of Silence and A Reason to Fight, which they played after honouring Keith, were such moving performances in particular. As far as live shows go, it was an experience I don't think can easily be matched.

David Draiman just has this voice that can go from mellow and soft, to raspy and edgy on a dime. He can sing you a lullaby, and then while you're asleep he'll drag you down to the deepest depths of hell, where he will wake you up and help you rise like a fallen angel into Mordor, leading an army of orcs into battle and emerging victorious.
He demonstrates that ability with such aplomb in this performance.

David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction ....Lulu and John....was mine too! If you want to see the latest song David put out there a few weeks ago with a great guitar diva ....try "Dead Inside" .....with David Draiman (of Disturbed) and Nita Strauss. I think you two will love it....however.....it's a LOT different than this song you just listened to.....lol.

I love watching these critique videos because I love seeing the look on all your faces when you listen to this tune for the first time - no matter how old th video is! Nobody ever expects what they end up listening to! I, myself, only discovered this version of TSOS quite recently, and I was stunned. Speechless. He sings with amazing clarity, smoothness, ease - and power. This entire band is powerful. I graduated from HS the year S&G released this song. Tbh, I didn’t care for them because they were too mellow for me. I was into hard rock - the Stones, Doors, Who, Zeppelin. When I heard this for the first time, I cried. I’ve listened to a lot of great music over the years, but I don’t ever remember a song that made me cry from the deep emotions i was feeling in my head and soul. And all I could say was WOW. I just don’t see how anyone else could ever do this song better than Disturbed. Including S&G.
