Outside of David's voice in both versions the Official video visually tells the story and Conan is about the vision of instruments. Being a trained Cantor he has such amazing beautiful control of his voice.
I know a lot people talk about proof of autotune in a certain spot but if you look at his mouth, at that point, you can see the change in it which changes the sound.
I had this song played at my father's funeral. The original by Simon and Garfunkel was one of his favorite songs, but when my mother heard the Disturbed version she insisted on that one. Even the priest sang along with it and got teared up. I can't hear it now without thinking of my dad. Great job by David Draiman!
Someone once said the the original by Simon and Garfunkel was a warning and that the Disturbed version is the rage that we didn’t listen. I’d say that sums it up perfectly
I read that David got a message from Paul Simon congratulating him on the cover, much like Trent Reznor sent a message to Johnny Cash when he covered hurt. Both artists put such a personal stamp on the song as to assume some ownership of it in the minds of many fans.
David’s rendition is beyond soul stirring. I always have tears rolling without even knowing it every time I hear this. I played this for my late husband and I glanced over to see his reaction and he had tears rolling. He said “thank you for this.”

To make this performance even more impressive, David Draiman was very sick during this performance; apparently he was sitting on the stool because there was concern he was going to fall over if he tried to perform while standing. That's his deal, but he is also a clasically trained cantor, so his underlying musical training is full of technique. If you like metal ... which I'm assuming you don't ... Down With The Sickness will give you their true musical style (but the lyrics are meaningful and powerful even if that style's not your jam.) This is an anomaly for them, though, so don't be surprised.
So true, Melly Lynn. They've GOT to watch the original video. The first time I saw it I cried, had pins and needles and goosebumps all over my arms, and my body actually shook. I love Paul Simon and am so grateful to him for writing this song, but Disturbed's performance of it brings it to life in a way that nobody else ever has. And the original video in its stark black and white format with the background images is a visually stunning accompaniment that gives life and reality to the lyrics.
Disturbed is truly a heavy metal band that could appeal to the masses even if you do not like their musical style, their songs have substance. Other significant songs they have covered are Shout by Tears For Fears , Land Of Confusion by Genesis and ISHFWILF ( I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2)

The actual video that was made in studio was very good. Disturbed is more of a hard rock group. When Paul Simon gives his complete approval of the job David did with the song, that says something.
Of course he's OK with it, it's a new stream of publishing royalties. What else is he going to say, that he doesn't like money? Both Disturbed's version of the song on the album and their version of the song on the TV show are horrific. Painful to listen to. A musical mockery. Auto-Tune should be like guns, there should be strict laws against owning and using it. Punishable by the death penalty.
This, along with Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, has become my go-to response to anyone who dismisses cover songs. The original was amazing, but this version encapsulates the feeling and context of the lyrics to a degree that Simon and Garfunkel did not.

The lead singer is David Draiman. The are 100% a heavy metal band but, like most metal bands, all classically trained musicians and he is a classically trained opera singer and Jewish Cantor
The reaction that the guy is having is how this song is supposed to make us all feel! It has a very important and urgent message that should move anyone who hears it to tears..to feel something so deeply that you become a force for change! Bravo! Great reaction!
I love hearing/seeing people's reactions to David's performance! It still gives me goosies! He starts out mild and calm, then it builds and bui!ds til he explodes with anger at how people have been moved from faith, to material things...and to silence. No conversation. No interaction. No music. The words of prophets can be maybe only seen on subway walls? It's a perfect reflection of what is happening in America. Paul was genius to write it, and David brings the emotions that belong to the words! Amazing!
I find the Disturbed version of this song touches the very core of my being and is very powerful. It’s a recognition of rebellion of my very soul. Love it.
I love seeing people watch this song for the first time. To see them enfolded and held in the warmth and power of Draiman's voice. As I feel his voice wrap around me. Still. Every time. Check out their version of, "If I ever lose my faith in you." and always, believe in yourself.
I saw this comment somewhere and I agree a 1000%: The original conveys the message in desperation to be heard. This conveys the message angrily, no one heard him.. and now he roars.
This song never fails to get me going emotionally. I can sit here having a chill day, nothing on my mind, and then I listen to this song, specifically by Disturbed, and I start tearing up. David Draiman is an incredible vocalist, I dare to say masterful. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert in Toronto a couple years ago just after the death of Prodigy's Keith Flint, which they addressed in combination with depression, addiction, and mental health. The whole show was incredible, but Sound of Silence and A Reason to Fight, which they played after honouring Keith, were such moving performances in particular. As far as live shows go, it was an experience I don't think can easily be matched.
Written in the 70’s Simon & Garfunkel warned us all about the evil of the cell phone aka “the Neon God we made”. Mind blowing wisdom and scary Nostradamus prediction 30 years before cell phones and texting created silence. Great video guys. And yes he can sing like an Opera singer. Disturbed also made “down with the sickness” 15 years before corona.
The official music video has around 790 million views That one is completely awesome A must watch or react to Great Reaction you two as always stay safe
David Draiman just has this voice that can go from mellow and soft, to raspy and edgy on a dime. He can sing you a lullaby, and then while you're asleep he'll drag you down to the deepest depths of hell, where he will wake you up and help you rise like a fallen angel into Mordor, leading an army of orcs into battle and emerging victorious. He demonstrates that ability with such aplomb in this performance.
This is the best reaction to this video I've seen. The emotion on your faces and in your eyes was real and can be felt through the screen. Bravo you guys! Just subbed!
Metal has some of the worlds best musical talent. Dont be so quick to dismiss metal. Thanks for reviewing this amazing and powerful version of and amazing song.
Definitely need to watch the official video; David Draimen manages to hit even more emotion and the actual artistry of the video combined with his vocals gives me goosebumps and tears every single time I watch it.
There are no words… I’m emotionally stricken each time I watch this performance and hear this version. Prophetic in it’s original version and re-delivered again to a world with a message to wake up. It’s always moving to witness other’s experiencing this for their first time…
Down with the sickness is by far there most well known song. This would be a great song to review next. Its completely the opposite of what you just watched. But I still think you'll be amazed!!!
Not a huge Disturbed fan but they took the song to the next level so bravo to them. Very powerful. If you want more emotional stuff like this then the official videos for SOEN - the words & JOHNNY CASH - Hurt will humble you into the feels - big time 😉
I have listed to Disturbed since I was in middle school. I can still remember watching the winter Olympics with my family and hearing this song for the first time and it was my mom that recognized his voice. God.....I really do miss her and those times.
Fab reaction guys. You said it, this is one of if not THE greatest live performances of all time. the original has been on my playlist for ever, but this beats the living crap of it.
I listen to this song daily multiple times to keep me in check with these humans that are so silent and do not listen . I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel thanks to my sister but when I heard David sing this from his heart and his very being I cried . I cry every time I listen and I pray for all the silent people who are do not disturb the sound of silence and causes problems. Music is healing ♥️ Every human being can be touched by music , healed, and loved through music ♥️♥️
One of their most famous songs is ”down with the sickness”, make sure to listen to the uncut version, I know there is a lyrics video that contain it all.
I've read people say the original was like a warning to society and this version was outrage that the warning had been ignored. Arguably, their most well-known is called "down with the sickness"..... Buckle up!!
Disturbed has so, so many great songs. Inside The Fire is an amazing song with a very deep meaning. I would recommend researching the meaning before listening. Then listen and use it as a platform for discussion. Great song with an important message / purpose.
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction ....Lulu and John....was mine too! If you want to see the latest song David put out there a few weeks ago with a great guitar diva ....try "Dead Inside" .....with David Draiman (of Disturbed) and Nita Strauss. I think you two will love it....however.....it's a LOT different than this song you just listened to.....lol.
That was truly amazing. Who ever thought to put to match him to that song has a strong sense of hearing his voice with that song is extremely accurate in finding the right match for that song. It's really crazy
Some songs go straight to your soul and the tears flow. My favorite song as a teen...listened in the dark. I did not fit. I found my estranged daughter (from my US Army days), and she told me this was her favorite song, and listened in the dark when life was too much. Shivers
I always feel like the original was a gentle warning, and the cover was the rage from the warning being ignored. It is hard to not get in your feels when you hear this. I weep every time.
Disturbed’s version of sound of silence was used in the death scene in black list. It was such a powerful emotional scene and disturbed’s version was the best choice. My opinion no one can make this song better.
The fact he sings the same way live as he does in a video his voice is amazing and when I hear this song with this voice it fills me with sorrow and hope at the same time
This is such an amazing cover. Probably the best of Sound of Silence, and also possibly the best Disturbed has done (they're known for including a cover song on each album). If you want another mind blowing cover from them though, they did an amazing version of "If I Ever Lose My Faith" that is hauntingly beautiful.
@@darc9338 Not really. I've heard there was only 1 moment in the song that auto tune was used. David was pissed when he later found out about it because he had specified he didnt want auto tune used.
@@botchvinik8668 Show me the interview where he said that. He never did. The whole thing was autotuned. If you go to wings of pegasus channel, he analyzes. The thing is, David can sing his butt off so I'm not sure why he used autotune, but the album was pitch corrected as well. They may have done it as an artistic choice for the song. Kind of a statement about technology, but who knows. Only the band.

This guy's reaction is priceless. Without saying anything his expression of the emotion says it all. Great song. The one other song l know that l like by disturbed is "down with the sickness". It's a good feel for their heavier side and has another cool vocal twist of his early on. If you didn't know, l was shocked to learn that their lead singer is actually a classically trained vocalist.
"Down with the Sickness". But you need the lyrics version because it is unedited. The edited part helps explain what is going on with the song but does contain some bad words and powerful emotions.
The original version by Simon and Garfunkel is a classic, but Disturbed's rendition of this song gives the song more emotion and power. His voice and delivery is just touching. Gives you goosebumps. You can really feel it. I dare say this cover makes it a much better song.
Disturbed has a deep catalog of great music. You might like 'Hold on to the Memories', which is more like this cover. But Down With The Sickness is a good intro to their heavy stuff. Also, Vengeful One, The Light, Who Taught You To Hate, and inside The Fire are also impactful.
I love watching these critique videos because I love seeing the look on all your faces when you listen to this tune for the first time - no matter how old th video is! Nobody ever expects what they end up listening to! I, myself, only discovered this version of TSOS quite recently, and I was stunned. Speechless. He sings with amazing clarity, smoothness, ease - and power. This entire band is powerful. I graduated from HS the year S&G released this song. Tbh, I didn’t care for them because they were too mellow for me. I was into hard rock - the Stones, Doors, Who, Zeppelin. When I heard this for the first time, I cried. I’ve listened to a lot of great music over the years, but I don’t ever remember a song that made me cry from the deep emotions i was feeling in my head and soul. And all I could say was WOW. I just don’t see how anyone else could ever do this song better than Disturbed. Including S&G.
I have to confess i just come across your reaction to this, im now a subscriber and i watched this reaction about 4 times already, loved the emotion xx

@@lda5803 I would love to see where he states this. I have seen so many people say this, but have never been able to find where he says he was pissed about it. The album version was also pitch corrected.
@@lda5803 Baloney. The only thing "sick" was their use of Auto-Tune on both the album and the performance for TV. Why would he "pissed" about Auto-Tune on a TV show if he wasn't "pissed" about the use of Auto-Tune (or manual pitch correction) on the album? He wasn't "pissed" about anything, that's some fan's excuse that was spread like manure.

@@TontoEpstein Meanwhile disturbed holding the same grudge you have against autotune
This gives me chills every time I hear it!!! Love this ❤️
This, along with Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, has become my go-to response to anyone who dismisses cover songs.
The original was amazing, but this version encapsulates the feeling and context of the lyrics to a degree that Simon and Garfunkel did not.
The Trifecta, not in any order
Johnny Cash and Hurt
Disturbed and Sound of Silence
Whitney Houston and I will always love you
Also some consider it this way. S&Gs version was a warning and caustionary tale. Disturbeds is a call to action and a challenge.
@@memnarch129 Wait Whitney is not the original singer of I will always love u? Who is?
@@davidstratton696 Dolly Parton. She wrote it when she was leaving the Porter Wagner show. She agreed to 5 years. At end she wanted to leave, show was doing well, and Dolly and Porter where being stuborn. So Dolly did what she does best, went home and wrote a song, That song is I will always love you.

@@memnarch129 Wow I feel like my whole life has been a lie lol. No but seriously I always thought it was Whitney cause everytime someone mentions that song it’s always Whitney that’s mentioned. I’ve also pretty much only ever heard Whitney’s version. Guess it makes sense now y in the Forever Country video she was the last one to sing in it singing I will always love u. That’s the only other version I ever heard cause I just thought Whitney’s version was the original. Not sure if I’d like the original tho compared to Whitney’s tho (especially from what I heard on Forever Country) cause I’m so used to Whitney’s version and how powerful it is. So I don’t think I’ll listen to it cause I don’t think I could make it through it lol.
I love that Lulu is just absorbed by the song and Master Lee is simply in awe of it. That's the perfect dual reaction.
The lead singer is David Draiman. The are 100% a heavy metal band but, like most metal bands, all classically trained musicians and he is a classically trained opera singer and Jewish Cantor
Cantor, not opera.
Most metal bands are classically trained?!? Not.
@@ROOKTABULA I wouldn't say most, but a lot of them yeah. In much greater proportion than other musical genres.
The reaction that the guy is having is how this song is supposed to make us all feel! It has a very important and urgent message that should move anyone who hears it to tears..to feel something so deeply that you become a force for change! Bravo! Great reaction!
Its a good thing to choose this version, its by far the best.
Amazing!
Every time I hear this song his voice gives me goosebumps 😩 so chilling voice
It’s been a long time since a song moved me to tears. This cover did just that. EPIC.
I find the Disturbed version of this song touches the very core of my being and is very powerful. It’s a recognition of rebellion of my very soul. Love it.
David nailed it with this version! He can use his voice and expression to Create so much more!
I love seeing people watch this song for the first time. To see them enfolded and held in the warmth and power of Draiman's voice. As I feel his voice wrap around me. Still. Every time.
Check out their version of, "If I ever lose my faith in you." and always, believe in yourself.
I saw this comment somewhere and I agree a 1000%:
The original conveys the message in desperation to be heard.
The official music video has around 790 million views
That one is completely awesome
A must watch or react to
Great Reaction you two as always stay safe
Your ability to listen clear through and then the honesty of your emotions and reactions is so refreshing.
From that album
1) Who Taught You How to Hate
2)Immortalized
3)The Light
4)[Their First Love Song] You're Mine
5)Save our Last Goodbye
This is the best reaction to this video I've seen. The emotion on your faces and in your eyes was real and can be felt through the screen. Bravo you guys! Just subbed!
Metal has some of the worlds best musical talent. Dont be so quick to dismiss metal. Thanks for reviewing this amazing and powerful version of and amazing song.
Definitely need to watch the official video; David Draimen manages to hit even more emotion and the actual artistry of the video combined with his vocals gives me goosebumps and tears every single time I watch it.
Every single time I get chills and tears!
Instant chills from the moment he started singing. Everytime!
Not a huge Disturbed fan but they took the song to the next level so bravo to them. Very powerful. If you want more emotional stuff like this then the official videos for SOEN - the words & JOHNNY CASH - Hurt will humble you into the feels - big time 😉
i'm moved and shook.... and happy and crying and loving it
Brother, you looked like I felt the first time I heard that rendition. Your reaction brought me back to that day. Thank you for that!
I love watching people react to this version of this song. Disturbed so powerful
This song is simply a masterpiece
I've watched this performance maybe 100 times and get chills every time still.
I've read people say the original was like a warning to society and this version was outrage that the warning had been ignored.
Arguably, their most well-known is called "down with the sickness"..... Buckle up!!
OOOOOH WA A A A 🤘
David Draiman is soooooo incredible and his pianist is one with him....
Disturbed has so, so many great songs. Inside The Fire is an amazing song with a very deep meaning. I would recommend researching the meaning before listening. Then listen and use it as a platform for discussion. Great song with an important message / purpose.
I've seen it probably a 1000 times right now and I still cry and get ghost bumps every single time
I always think how crazy it would have been for the audience, went to see Conan, laughed at the monologue, the guest interview, and then BAM that song
Thank you for appreciating this version!
I get goosebumps and shivers every time I listen to this.♥️
David Draiman...a voice to die for!
I've seen them perform it live 3 times since 2016. It is so emotional every single time.
I love that you are silently singing along. You know the words. It is a beautiful performance, isn’t it?
That was truly amazing. Who ever thought to put to match him to that song has a strong sense of hearing his voice with that song is extremely accurate in finding the right match for that song. It's really crazy
Some songs go straight to your soul and the tears flow. My favorite song as a teen...listened in the dark. I did not fit. I found my estranged daughter (from my US Army days), and she told me this was her favorite song, and listened in the dark when life was too much. Shivers
awesome reaction video!! thanks for sharing this video because it's so mesmerizing and powerful!! hits the soul where it counts!
I always feel like the original was a gentle warning, and the cover was the rage from the warning being ignored. It is hard to not get in your feels when you hear this. I weep every time.
Thank you, and I loved the expressions. Had to watch twice.
Disturbed’s version of sound of silence was used in the death scene in black list. It was such a powerful emotional scene and disturbed’s version was the best choice. My opinion no one can make this song better.
The sound of the awed silence for those few seconds when that last note stopped… goosebumps every time.
He classically trained... Down with the Sickness (official video) The Light, Stricken, Prayer, Are you Ready, Reason to Fight, Hold on to the Memories
That has been my favorite version of that song since I heard it years ago.
Absolutely phenomenal!
That was incredible and the 60-year-old bloke, and it just brought me to tears amazing thank you
Best part of this performance was he was sick with a head cold and had a fever and managed to sound this good!!
I'm pretty sure the auto tune helped a bit with that during this performance.
Speaking form experience, singing with a cold is not easy. Singing THIS song???? OMG...
@@darc9338 Your comment shows us that you have no idea wtf you're talking about. Oh and i've seen Wings of Pegasus' analysis of the song btw. But anyway, you know how i know you're full of shit?...because you said "album". There IS NO ALBUM in the context of my original comment OR this video! It was a live performance on Conan! Remember!? Do yourself a favor and stfu about things you know nothing about.
Thank you, best reaction to this version of the song ever, I am humbled thank you
This guy's reaction is priceless.
Awe
, Power, and emotion knocks you over like a tsunami.
"Down with the Sickness". But you need the lyrics version because it is unedited. The edited part helps explain what is going on with the song but does contain some bad words and powerful emotions.
I love this version so much!! First time I heard this version, gave me chills!!! This band is awesome!
The original version by Simon and Garfunkel is a classic, but Disturbed's rendition of this song gives the song more emotion and power. His voice and delivery is just touching. Gives you goosebumps. You can really feel it. I dare say this cover makes it a much better song.
OMG standing ovation is right!!! I know this song. But THIS rendition. OMG again.
Great reaction, this version really hits deep.
Paul Simon gave it a thumbs up so it has to be good.
My favorite version by far.
I have to confess i just come across your reaction to this, im now a subscriber and i watched this reaction about 4 times already, loved the emotion xx
Have y’all never heard Down with the sickness? David Draiman is a professional vocalist who has worked on his sound and perfected his instrument with incredible precision. He is a gift: I’m glad y’all were able to experience this performance. Check out the video as well. It’s pretty awe inspiring!
No matter how many times I listen to this I still get chills
Sometimes a voice and a performance will make a song, it might not even be your own song but something about you being so unique. Your reaction was very similar to mine.
His voice.. combined with the orchestra...and obviously the words..I bawl all of 1000 times I've watched this video in the past year lol. I'm 53 and had never heard of Disturbed. His voice though..
What's even more amazing is that the singer, David Draiman, had the flu during that performance. #puretalent
And he was pissed that they used autotune on him lol
@@lda5803 I would love to see where he states this. I have seen so many people say this, but have never been able to find where he says he was pissed about it. The album version was also pitch corrected.
@@lda5803 Baloney. The only thing "sick" was their use of Auto-Tune on both the album and the performance for TV. Why would he "pissed" about Auto-Tune on a TV show if he wasn't "pissed" about the use of Auto-Tune (or manual pitch correction) on the album? He wasn't "pissed" about anything, that's some fan's excuse that was spread like manure.
@@TontoEpstein the music video used very little manual pitch correction. These days it's commonplace, but he does try to steer mostly clear of it.
