Whenever I really look at 2010’s fashion, the thing that really strikes me is how cheap everything looked. Cheap fabric, cheap patterns, terrible imitation leather, horrible craftsmanship, etc.... I’m sure it’s at least partially due to the popularity of fast fashion, and because of that I’m sure we won’t see the end of it this decade...

Most dissolved in the washing machine after a season. But every once in awhile something turned out to be sturdier than the manufacturer intended. Like coming upon a seamstress’s quiet rebellion by accident. The same shirts on the rack would be flimsy but just one would be made well

This is probably why one of the real trends of mid 90's hasn't really made an appearance. The sown in wedges to turn skinny and straight jeans to bootcuts and widelegs. There were few years around 94 when everyone at school had atleast a pair of jeans they had altered. But back then jeans were expensive and build to last. You don't see that much in the fashion pics, since it was the budget solution. The ripped of waistband (to make low waist) that came little later at least was preseved in some music videos.

Something about all these trends has always felt so..."cheap" or artificial for me, even compared to the decade before. I think what really makes this era so mediocre fashion-wise in my book is due to the explosion of fast fashion. Not that clothes today are made any better, but I feel like this time period really marked the current decline in quality. I can't really see much of these clothes being in the condition to be thrifted if any of these trends ever get revived twenty years from now.

I didn't and still don't wear skirts and I thought they were really cute! easy to style, flattering for everyone, usually reasonably priced, can be dressed up or down, etc. with tennis skirts (that I think the narrator partially only likes better because they are what's on trend now but will also look dated in a few years), they're more likely to be unflattering and make your legs look shorter because the pleats start lower than the average pleated skirt and can cut off at an awkward length for the modern eye. they seem a bit harder to incorporate into one's personal style, too, as they pair best with only certain items.
I say wear what you want, and also, a lot of major retailers sell basic skater silhouettes to this day so it's still being worn anyhow and for good reason, methinks.

I have a pair of vintage Canadian heeled boots with a similar type of heel and that's all I can wear because of a joint issue that greatly affects my ankle and hip stability. Although once the barefoot/minimalist trend started, I jumped on that because I need the extra balance, and still buy only flat wide toe shoes. If I were to get something high heeled, I'd love to try tabi boots like Maison Margiela ones, but they're either super expensive, or super cheap rip offs. I just wonder if the separate big toe would help with stability at all.

My hot take is that the 2010s weren’t actually the “worst time for fashion”. It’s just a lot of people with that take were in their middle school cringe era or other awkward phase at the time, and they’d feel different if they were wearing skinny jeans or whatever at age 17 in 2013 versus at age 12 in 2013. Anecdotally, I was 17 in 2013 (turned 18 later that year) and had the same take about the early-mid 2000s having the “objectively worst” fashion (because that was my cringe era). Other people who think the early 2010s were somehow uniquely bad fashion-wise are just very into fashion and we’re simply on the other side of the trend cycle.

Clothing and different fashion trends aren’t inherently good or bad, what’s important is having fun with self expression, or making that self expression a reflection of who we are or what we feel.
Life is a lot more fun when you just live it, without worrying about what’s “cringe” or “awkward”.

In 10 years when skater skirts are trendy and tennis skirts are boring, people will make videos saying skater skirts are so much better than ugly tennis skirts. Just have some self-awareness for goodness sake.

In 10 years skater skirts will be back in and you will look back and think you were silly to believe that they're "objectively" ugly. People used to say the exact same thing you're saying now about the y2k era, including that low-rise is objectively ugly/unflattering, and that with the rise of brands for teen clothing the quality of clothes had dropped.
People have been wearing "cheap," "low quality," "unflattering" polyester since at least the 70s and today those clothes are largely intact and coveted as vintage items. Self-awareness, please. Being a snob is never trendy.

Obviously everyone likes some trends and not others, that doesn't change anything. Every kid hates the most recent fashion era that is now dated. In the 60s there were plenty of shitty low quality peter pan collar mini dresses, the 60s were famous for an explosion in youth fashion that - you guessed it - resulted in a lot of cheaper, lower quality clothes.

Hard disagree on a lot of these, and this is a particularly juvenile take on fashion. We cringe hardest at fashion trends from 10-15 years ago. Many of today’s trends (frogs, cottagecore, egirl, demonias) will eventually be looked upon with disdain. Fashion is cyclic. The Lita paved the way for many of the chunky shoe trends we see today. Skinny jeans are out, but it’s because we are bored of them, not because they’re bad. In 10-20 years, we’ll only remember the best bits of 2010s fashion and bring them back with modern twists.

A LOT of these trends were especially popular with, or at least forgiving to, curvier and bigger women. It's STILL difficult to find a nice plus size dress that doesn't have a "high-low" skirt situation. Skater skirts are still everywhere because they're so flattering. Jeggings were comfortable, and easy to fit due to elastic.

we might have a wider variety of styles now but there are definitely some things that we will look at as “2020s fashion” in a couple decades. Claw clips, puffer jackets, jordan 1s, big platform boots, mini shoulder bags, corsets, synthetic leather jackets… this era definetely has items that the coming generation will mock, we are just not aware of them as they are staples now

I grew up at the time that people hated 80's fashion, then in 2000, people hated 90's fashion. Now, I am seeing so much of 80's, 90's, and sometimes even 00's fashion coming back. So my point is, wear what you want to wear rather than wearing what everyone is wearing. Fashion is cyclical, enjoy what you have at the moment and don't be embarrassed of what you wore years ago, be proud of the memories associated with it. Fashion trend is a scam brought about by the unethical fashion industry.

Also adding: Having a sense of style does not require the following of trends. The best dressed people I know don't follow trends, but rather, if they shop for clothing, they buy things that look good on them, fit with stuff they already have in the closet, fits their current style (not the style they yearn for that is totally impractical for them), and that they feel comfortable and confident in. A girl in a well-styled harajuku outfit probably looks better than your fav celeb wearing a mish-mash of the latest trend. Make your closet fit your own aesthetic, not trends, and you will will look and feel on point most of the time.

I don’t think ANY of these trends were “bad” or “cringe” actually! 😅 I literally *can’t* think of them that way. When I was sporting some of these looks, a lot of people (including myself!) thought the aesthetics of the 2000s were absolutely terrible. “Can you believe anyone ever wore low-rise jeans lol? Who would purposefully want to wear that, they were so ugly!” I used not be able to believe I wore tight cropped tees, and talked about how unflattering they were. I talked about the 2000s trends in the EXACT same way as people are now talking about 2010s trends. And now, those 2000s clothes are back in style, and all the times my mom told me, “Fashion comes and goes in cycles,” keeps repeating in my head. No matter what we think now, in 2030, we are gonna find a way to unjustify every one of these 2020s trends, I promise you. Fashion never gets “better” or “worse” unless it’s in regards to the comfort and freedom of the wearer. Gen Z embracing all the trends I (once loved, then) hated is showing me that there’s no point in mocking any trends, they’ll always come back, one way or the other! ☺️
I personally like the way the 2010s embraced the curvier aesthetic, I became blessed in certain areas quite early on and was glad that I went from being mocked in the 2000s to complimented in the 2010s. Now the ideal body shape is changing once again and no longer looks like mine. Thankfully I don’t have to deal with high school drama anymore and in all these years, I’ve grown to love myself the way I am. The upcoming years might not be too kind to girls built like me, but I hope they realize that what goes around comes around and that the ideal will come to fit them once again in the future, so they should keep their chins up! All of you are beautiful nevertheless ☺️

The 2010s were not any more derivative of earlier styles than other decades were. There was more of a distinct style to that decade than you think. Yes, they used neon colors back then too but that's as far as the similarity goes.

You can tell the girl who made this video is very much influenced by what's trendy. Anything that still is somewhat trendy now, she claims "isn't the worst" - (distressed jeans, circle skirts but claims pleated skirts are better). Anything that was distinctly from that period, even though she says she owned it and wore it she claims is hideous or ugly. Things can be off trend without being hideous IMO and you can mix and match trendy pieces from different periods and still look fashionable. She claims skinny jeans aren't flattering on anyone, including plus size and wide legged pants would look much better but there's a reason a lot of plus size or curvey people have stuck with their skinny jeans. They can definitely be flattering and don't always make you look "disproportionate" like the girl in the video claims. Proportions are just that- proportional and depend on your own figure as well as what you pair with it. It was an interesting video but you can easily spot how manipulated she is by what's considered fashionable by mainstream media.

And I have a strong feeling that when 2010 trends again become trendy, this and other channels similar to this one will praise it again, just like low rise jeans.

Skinny jeans and Skater Skirts until I die, both versatile and looks good on my body shape, I can easily dress them up or down with just a T-shirt. Never had those Lita shoes but I would love them now. High-Low dresses were never my favorite unless they were well executed like that first picture on the left when showing those side by side pictures on the red carpet. My go-to fancy dress is a high-low dress that is nicely executed.

Yes. I used to love skinny jeans so much, but by my senior year in 2013, I got more into straight leg and boyfriend jeans. It was mostly for a retro aesthetic, but in recent years, I just feel like my ankles and calves are too small in comparison to my wide hips to wear skinny jeans all the time.

@@MONET8iAM I'm probably a lot older than anyone else here, having been a teenager during the 90's. I have loathed this extensive skinny jeans trend. I have thick calves, always have, always will. It was impossible to find jeans (or often other trousers as well) that would fit. I don't mind showing the shape of my legs, but no matter how much strech there was, when my calves would fit the waist was too big to stay up. So I resorted to 90's broke teenager solution of ripping the sideseem and adding a wedge. Btw, nothing wrong with low waist, it won't work for everyone, but neather does high waist. And you don't need to go to the extreme with eather.

    • @infamoussphere7228

@@Ruinwyn oh man I agree, I couldn't even do the skinny jeans trend even if I'd wanted to, because the jeans would just...not go over my calves. I have the sturdy legs of a clydesdale. And when skinny jeans were in, it was extremely difficult to find anything else. Thankfully I managed to find bootcut or straight leg jeans at less fashionable jeans shops.
I'm ok with having low waisted pants because the way I'm shaped...almost all of my pants end up low rise anyway. They just automatically fall down to that point. High waisted pants don't work that well because I have a very long torso and most pants just don't have that big of a rise.

As a curvier/chubby girl who can often feel insecure about her tummy, skater skirts can be a comfortable and cute option for me. Especially considering that my torso is longer than it should be in proportion to my legs, skater skirts fit me like mini skirts and are often the only skirts I can wear without having my ass out. This is one trend I wish people wouldn’t shit on as much because plus size people have a hard time finding comfortable things that fit, and yeah I wish I could find more pleated skirts that fit me right, but gd is it hard. The vanity sizing that continues today as well as the style of a school girl/pleated skirt can make finding one that fits as someone with wide hips and a slight tummy really difficult. Skater skirts by comparison are made with stretchier material and don’t have that annoying stitching at the top that’s made to make the top half of the skirt hug your hips. They’re just made more comfortable and are very easy to pair with the rest of your outfit because the silhouette is just a basic a-line circle skirt. Sometimes basic isn’t bad and you can make a cute outfit with one just fine. Sorry if this came off as very rant-y but I wanted to point out that certain trends get a lot of shit without people really considering that they may fit a certain body type better than this cute new trendy thing that’s wayyyyy better. Yeah my style looks a bit dated, but you try finding the current “new thing” when your proportions are bigger than what the fashion industry thinks is beautiful.
