A LOT of what is popular from those styles can be directly traced back to Mori and Natural Kei which were both Japanese street fashions that were popular in the late 2000's in Japan. They ended up getting international popularity through tumblr in the early 2010's. Even now a lot of the pinterest and traces of polyvore fashion boards floating around the internet that we associate with cottage core, fairy core etc. were actually created in the early 2010's during the J-fashion boom on tumblr.

Mock this fashion era all you want, but I will be forever grateful for it for popularizing high rise jeans. As an insecure fat kid, those pants made me feel stylish and cute. Some (many) of the other trends haven’t aged nearly as well but I’ll always prefer high rise pants over other styles
YES tho here in LatAm it took a while for high waist to become fashionable and available. I will only wear high waist jeans/skirts for the rest of my life.
Of all the trends that may come back, Im worried that the “thigh gap” will. Wanting a gap was on every tumblr fashion post and it was so toxic. I remember scrolling through “pro-ana” blogs and being morbidly drawn to it.
@@elegerard yes!!! the whole aesthetic revolves around skinny girls with flat chests and thigh gaps. i wouldn’t say i’m plus size, like i can fit into a small size dress, but i’m a 34D and i def don’t have a thigh gap so clothes like low rise jeans and baby tees don’t work on me and it just sucks cause then i feel bad about myself
I think an honorable mention should be Disney Bounding. While not necessarily a collected style of certain clothes, it was definitely its own “aesthetic”, was insanely popular on Tumblr, instantly recognizable, and definitely entered mainstream fashion.

When people bound as Snow White they typically wear a blue top, a yellow skirt or bottoms, and then some red accessories. Just look up Disney bounding and you’ll see lots of examples on Google images. I’m not entirely sure about the history of people wearing Mickey ears, though wearing them isn’t exclusive to bounding, nor does every bound use them

Unpopular opinion: you gotta wait around 20 years to be able to judge a period in fashion *somewhat* objectively. Back in 2010-2015 we all despised early 2000s fashion, then in mid 2010s late 2000s/early 2010s fashion became uncool. Now look at us wearing late 90s and early 2000s trends and watching films from that era for inspiraton. In other words: 2000-2015 fashion is not better or worse than any other decade. It WILL COME BACK. Beware! (yes I'm terrified too) And 2 years later, I'm actually starting to see early 2010s inspo and influences pop up in online communities and smaller runways. When it actually hits the stores I'll just choose to stay comfortably boomer in my tastes, thank you
You are sort of right. Think of a teenager girl, she would hate her childself and thinks that she were cringey. After 10 years, she would miss that days and she would think that some of those memories were cute. 2010s were bad for me, i hated the trends that day and I still do. But 10 years later we will "remember" some trends were not that bad. Its kind of like nostalgia. 2010's will eventually come back and actually, Im starting to see some slight 2010's aspect. Unfortunately. But I do not think that terrible ones would come back.
I still don't like a lot of 2000's fashion, I didn't when I was in it, unless it's something like Willow's style from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I prefer the 2010's in fashion.
Honestly of all the aesthetics, Pastel Goth felt the most fresh to me. I remember when I first started coming across it around 2015 and thinking “finally something different and actually interesting”. The way it married elements of goth with japanese harajuku styles is a fascinating example of the coming together of two counter culture aesthetics from two very different parts of the world.
I think that many people don't hate 2010's fashion by itself, but the correlation of being what they wore when they were teenagers, a phase where we feel insecure and don't have a developed sense of style, so we end up cringing at it no matter what trend it is.

I feel this way too. My mom is the same with 80s/90s fashion because that’s when she was a teenager. Now I get how she feels when I see coral and mint skater dresses

maybe its just my experience but back then it seemed like every girl was on tumblr looking at these styles but no one ever dressed that way in person, or even attempted to. no teenage girl could afford a whole wardrobe like this, or think of a photo-worthy outfit to go to school in every day. but despite the seemingly clear demand for this type of style, for a while it seemed like you couldnt find clothes in any colours besides black/white/grey or muted earth tones like beige, olive green, maroon, navy blue. maybe it was just in my area or my budget but the general attitude was: “only buy safe, staple pieces in basic colours so you can make as many outfits as possible with them”. so when this brief wave of holographic/neon/galaxy print stuff popped up in actual stores i was like… well at least people are having fun
yea it seemed like only the aesthetic kids and celebs/influencers actually wore these things, most kids and people in general wore whatever was in stock at the store. and i think its always been like this for example the collective mind associates the 80s with loud neon tights under leotards, but everyday 80s wear was just a lot of brown and muted colors

People definitely did go hard into tumblr fashion irl, but I was the perfect age for it at the time. I started university in the early 2010s, so I had my first experience of an income and freedom from school uniforms/ daily parental scrutiny right at the prime moment for that site to fill my teen goth heart with galaxy garter-clip tights, chokers and stud-adorned cropped bustiers. I did physics labs with stiletto nails. My black-pink-purple ombre hair stained my sheets. I developed a whole new eating technique to spare my deep plum liquid lipstick. I worked demonic tutoring hours to get my Litas and Docs (which I still have, wear and love). I'm not that girl anymore, especially after spending most of the last year in PJs, but I regret nothing XD
I think a fashion style that overlaps with a lot of styles here was “dork” style, which was influenced by tumblr fandoms as the 2010s when being a nerd was cool now, and things like comic-con becoming less stigmatized. This fashion included a lot of fandom shirts , buttons, coats, suspenders, cardigans, big glasses, died hair, etc. Its basically hot topic when they transitioned from emo to fandom-y
I feel like the one thing I remember the most about the early 2010s was how there was a hot minute where EVERYTHING was this same shade of pastel sea foam green. Like, you could not walk into a store at the mall and not have that color thrown right in your face the moment you walked in.
I still love the “twee” look. You can see remnants of it in dark academia and cottage core, which are two aesthetics I draw on heavily. I take pride in my librarian style and you have to pry my Peter Pan collar from my cold dead hands.
I will say that I remember the “twee” aesthetic being much more size-inclusive than others. I think part of this had to do with Modcloth’s larger range of sizes. When I think of this style I often picture a plus-size model.
This is a really good point because while the most popular photos shown here lean extremely thin, there was a very considerable movement towards body positivity, and larger fashion bloggers were a big part of that. Retro inspired styles, because of their hyperfemininity, relative modesty, and figure flattering/hourglass enhancing cuts (including high waisted pants/shorts/skirts, which became a staple for everyone) became a strong option for a lot of average to plus sized people to embrace and show off their body shape, feel fashionable and feminine in a traditional sense (and thus fight perceptions that fat people can't be stylish or beautiful), and still have some degree of coverage or shaping to areas of the body they were less comfortable with. The number of plus sized fashion brands and bloggers that were hyped about high rise waists on every type of bottom was significant, especially since it allowed a reprieve from the super low rise, belly exposing fashion of the 2000s. Twee/retro inspired fashion was really important amongst body positivity fashion influencers of the time (think Tess Holiday), even if tumblr aesthetic photos prioritized stick thin bodies.
Forever 21 etc thrived on these. Each section in that store suited a different one of these aesthetics and as much as I hate the store, they did a great job confusing all of us on which "type of girl" we wanted to be.
YES forever 21 always had clothes that pertained to every one of the aesthetics shown in this video and even the patterns like mustaches, animals, glasses, cliche phrases, and etc. they excelled in fast fashion trends lmaoooo

I know a lot of people seem to hate this decade’s clothes but I really had a blast dressing myself during that time! I was in my late teens/early 20’s and I loved tumbler. I was so excited when I finally got my American Apparel skirt! I definitely was a big fan of soft grunge, hipster, Twee and Kawaii influenced fashion. You’re absolutely right when you pointed out how a big part of fashion then was to use your items in various different ways. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
People always hate stuff from one decade ago! But then, usually the trend comes back in a different way. I feel like most of these items only look dated if you style them exactly how they did then, but a lot of pieces could still be worn today.
Same for me. Except for some things that I'm glad are gone. And honestly 2000s fashion is much uglier to me in general and yet a lot people love it now. So in a few years people will be rocking their vintage mustache shirt from the thrift store 😅

As an Asian, more specifically Chinese, the so called Kawaii style is still a style that is fairly popular in China, South Korea and Japan. It's a little modified of course as now the aesthetic leans to princess or fairy aesthetic. So, it's not true that it didn't had an impact in the fashion world. Please, don't make the western world or the US be the centre of the world, bc it's not. The fashion world is not specifically western fashion.
yep i feel like ppl underestimate the impact that the fashion from east asia had on teens. especially on tumblr where alot of teens grown up watching/reading east asian media like kdramas and anime.
This! I've noticed over the past 5-7 years trends in Korea and Japan trickle over to the West like a year or two later (sometimes several years later)! For example, thigh high socks was a big trend in Japanese fashion during the mid-late 2000s and weren't widely available in Western shops until 2013/2014. I can't comment on Chinese fashion, since I'm not very familiar with it. I do know that aspects of Chinese fashion, like Mandarin collars and certain textiles/fabrics, cycle through Western fashion consistently throughout the 21st century.
Japanese street style is having a big impact here. You can even see it on tiktok with the socks, e-girls, and etc. I can even see a bold harajuku style influence
I've definitely seen the "soft grunge" "1975/ arctic monkeys fan" style come back a little on tiktok but in a nostalgic way. Instead of using the 90s inspiration, the tumblr style itself is the inspiration.
As an ex-tumblr kid who spent a lot of time looking at fashion pics, I'd like to make a note about the "kawaii" segment of the video. While I was too young at the time to remember the intricacies of how or why this style gained popularity, I will say that I don't think that the style originated from sweet lolita. Rather, it was a combination between various j-fashion styles and the mainstream western trends at the time. If memory serves right, the style here dubbed as "kawaii" actually encompassed different j-fashion styles that had active communities on tumblr: himekaji, otome, fairy kei, and yes, lolita. The photos shown throughout this segment of the video mostly belong to the himekaji ("princess casual") style, as far as I can tell. There was also a significant overlap (as there always has been, at least in the West) between these j-fashion communities on tumblr and the broader tumblr fandom culture, *especially* when it comes to anime. Anime (at least in my personal experience) is the most common way that people get exposed to j-fashion, so that was incredibly influential to the aesthetic as a whole. This is why items like pleated skirts (a nod to school uniforms) and t-shirts and crop tops with anime-style graphics were so ubiquitous to the style on tumblr. TLDR: I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that the tumblr kawaii aesthetic originated from sweet lolita. It instead combined several different j-fashion styles with mainstream fashion trends. It was also heavily influenced by anime, both in terms of the literal clothes worn by anime characters (school uniforms), and in terms of the overall emphasis on bright colors and 2D graphics.

So true! As much as I love this channel, they don’t really talk in depth about j-fashion when talking about 2010s trends. Like how pleated skirts were also from j-fashion, not every trend is linked to sweet lolita. there is so many sub genres when it come to japanese fashion that made it into the mainstream fashion scene and not all of them are just sweet lolita
hipsters piss me off the most because they hated so much on "basic people" and still dressed pretty similar to them, only on a darker color palette and switching the floral print for plaid... and they acted like liking coffee and wearing glasses was a personality trait even though half of the world population does that
I was very much unknowingly hipster. I had glasses (had them since i was a kid and still need them), I was into punk and indie music, I was an artist and everyone knew me as the art kid, and dressed more alternative, and I hate coffee which is funny. But I totally agree that basically all the fashion was the same but darker.
They all said they weren't basic and always how unique they were but when the style went out of trend they abandoned it in the blink of an eye.. the irony
ikr, sure it's a bit toned down as opposed to most alt fashion/subcultures, but it's perfect for an actual alt kid like me when I'm too lazy to dress up in several layers in hot weather lmao. It also works for me when I'm trying to go to places where there are dress codes and I still want to be seen as "alt" (also, strict, conservative, religious Asian parents). Also, minus the romanticization of dr*gs and mental illnesses, the music and everything else is really chill. :)

I literally had a neon yellow moustache ring and proudly wore it with my moustache shirt (which I of course DIYed to a muscle tank and spray painted the moustache on top haha I swear I can’t make this shit up😂)
the shorts + tights combo had me in such a chokehold in 2014-15 💀💀 that was mainly what I wore to high school combined with a basic sweater/long sleeve shirt. I remember getting compliments from other girls who I saw as "popular" or "basic", which made me feel soooo cool despite how simple the look was in hindsight lmao
I had a problem with skater skirts. I have a rectangle body shape and some love handles. The two skater skirts I had always my stomach look extra paunchy. Perhaps if my waist were smaller compared to my hips. It seems nice that the waist is smaller, but the lack of structure in the rest of the skirt…never could feel confident in it

I was also thinking this but not in a demeaning or creepy way like, in comparision to children/teens today we had the chance to be kids and experiment and be sloppy in our clothing in search of our identity, but nowadays style is "set" and everyone looks like tiny adults. true. teens these days grow up too fast. and, unfortunately, since you can't get a job in my location if you look alt, adolescence is the only age group when you can do it without serious things at stake. kids and teens should have fun, they're not celebs and not adults yet. they'll have plenty of time to look "sophisticated" because at that point in their lives, they won't have a choice, so it's better for them to mess around while they still can

This completely reminds me of the “Supernatural” fashion trend in fandom. Ripped blue jeans, a black tee or tank, and then a layer of flannel with brown leather boots or combat boots was the basic staple. I remember this one girl who switched from glasses to contacts because she said “it was more practical to hunt in” (referring to the show). We all felt like badasses with our salt and iron packets in our bags lol

@ankitha mahesh I have these Indian-Harem-ish type pants that my bf's mom bought for me. I like them, but there's definitely a fine line for me to walk as a white person. I know they were actually made in Nepal & fair trade so I feel slightly better. But yeah...it's always a conscious effort on my part to wear clothing respectfully. And nowadays I try to avoid "ethnic" mostly South Asian clothes when shopping. It's just too much of a metaphorical minefield. And sometimes I get overwhelmed it's hard and I truly don't want to offend anyone. I've had Indian people share their jewelry with me. So I feel like there's got to be room for some kind of respectful cultural exchange. I don't wear bindis, saris, henna, headchains, or the evil eye though.

I mean the price of clothes are grossly cheap ($10 for a shirt is definitely not paying the people who made the shirt fairly) and the 2010s is a great showcase of why making clothes cheaper and fashion cycles faster are bad. The decades clothes were a great example of "you get what you pay for".

I think i would've hated myself a lot less if there weren't only skinny jeans in the stores. I also feel like (maybe with the rise of tik tok) everyones more used to see more extravagant, colourful, fashionable looks and so it's more accepted. I grew up in germany, so maybe this is a german thing, but if someone would've walked in class with a skater skirt (or anything else besides skinny jeans and a basic or flannel shirt), everyone would've been weirded out

Hey I'm also from Germany and yes, people here dress so boring it's painful. I always loved extravagant fashion and make up. Also I fecking love dramatic ass people, they are more fun. Fortunately I didn't care about the other people in my school back then, I was always a loser so feck the other people. They also saw my political views as pretty radical, nowadays they are all widely accepted. Go figure. Of course my peers were a bit weirded out with my fashion choices sometimes and the teachers even more but at least I had fun. What I want to say with that, to everyone, feck other people. Do what you like. The things you think and the things you wear will be accepted in a few years and if not, no one will remember in 5 years from now what you wore and what you said. I think the 2010’s fashion was the best era for for flattering shapes and styles. I still wear skater skirts, a line dresses, skinny jeans and many of the 2010 staples because it looks best on my body shape. The 2000’s was all about using your body as the main accessory whereas in the 2010s we kind of went balls to the wall with everything. I think some honourable mentions would be moustache print, owl necklaces, galaxy print and the nerd aesthetic.
Agree so much, I'm pretty skinny but still have wide shoulders and hips. I cannot wear the high waisted "baggy" pants that are in style now, I look like as if I'm wearing a diaper :D I'll always be stuck with skater skirts, skinny jeans and converse.
It worked really well on her body type and overall appeal at the time. Back then her public image was still very conservative, but she always managed to look classy and well put together. She also popularized Keds. I would say that the 1989 era was still extremely put together in terms of fashion, still holding that classy aspect but more influential and modern, she mastered the “politician’s wife” aesthetic. Her street style was flawless at the time, but I wouldn’t really idolize it since she said it herself that that was her worst time with her eating disorder and the paps were ruthless.
As someone who lives in Iran there was not much variety in fashion aesthetics ( or you can say there was not any aesthetic) but with the rise of internet we got so many inspiration from outside world and in the past ten years you can see some similarities in generally iranian fashion to soft grunge , goth ,art hoe and also basic fashion .
I think the soft grunge look holds up well because it also has a lot of punk influence which has been around since the 70s and at this point I would basically call it a timeless alternative look. E girl fashion is a rehash of soft grunge as well I think.

All I know is I’m keeping these clothes for my kids cause for sure they will come back in 20 years. Weird how I was and still am a huge tumblr user. So this was definitely the evolution of trends I went through. I am a still huge fan of pastel goth and the more grunge looks. I’m a huge art hoe now. Great video.

Yes, the correlation made me a bit confused. I remember it was my favourite trend as a teen and it was mostly westernized cheap otome, himekaji, etc. Lolita has it own trends and it rarely is influenced by outer trends and vice versa
quick correction: kawaii as a subculture existed in the 1970s and ranges into a whole bunch of japanese street fashion not just lolita such as decora, gyaru, etc... lolita fashion first made its way around the late 1980s- 1990s and didn't get its name until roughly the 1990s or early 2000s.
I'm still a big fan of 2010s style, and way prefer it to 00s style. Some of the galaxy print, moustache and owl printed stuff was pretty cringey (even at the time) but across the board styles like twee and soft grunge were both pretty flattering and inoffensive and I'm still a big fan of both. Wil be excited when skater skirts become popular again!
same here. can't deny that there's a lot of cringey stuff in the 2010s, but i was a cringey teen during the 2010s so it's nbd haha And looking at all the styles again, they're actually not that bad at all. All they need is some polishing up and modernization. Many of them have great basic pieces that definitely still look good now (heck i'm still wearing clothes i bought from early 2010s and i don't look out of place at all)

I feel like “basic” tumblr fashion was so easily popularized bc fast fashion was growing exponentially and was extremely accessible and cheap. There wasn’t really a big sustainable clothing push that I can remember. Ofc, there’s still a ridiculous amt of fast fashion now, but I feel that there is also a strong sustainable clothing movement w/i Gen Z and Millennials.

Pencil skirts really haven't ever gone out of fashion. You can find examples of women wearing it consistently from the 1940s onward. It has a strong association with women's office workwear. There was a point in the 90s were A-line skirts were more common but the pencil skirt was still there. I think what has changed is the rise (mid rise, low rise, high waisted) and if you tucked the blouse in or not as well as where it was worn. Like you were less likely to see pencil skirts worn in casual settings because of its association with workwear. Bandage skirts are an interesting take on pencil skirts in making them tighter and more casual but they weren't even new, my mom wore bandage skirts to clubs in the 80s.
on a practical order, pencil skirts are comfier to wear while sitting regularly, not like other skirts that you have skin contact with chairs and surfaces (imagine be seated in a leather chair in hot summer or in a suddenly cold plastic surface), while not flowing everywhere around while you move. Also while plated tenis skirts look preppy and all, they make you look childish (for their asociation to schoolwear), unlike pencil skirt that gives you a mature outlook. Trends nowadays keep forgeting that women's fashion is not only for teenagers.
you know, when i was in middle school in like 2015 in poland we talked about the "tumblr style' and 'tumblr girl' and there was no separation of different aesthetics, just a collective of these styles like twee, blogger, hipster, soft grunge that are very very similiar plus some sporty adidas clothes and that was it, the tumblr girl fashion
A lot of these 2010s aesthetics are actually just sub fashion categories that we still use today. E girl is just Pastel goth without the pastel. Soft girl is just Kwai style without the Japanese influence. Not much has changed except for clothes are more revealing now. The 2010s was more inventive and memorable while now the styles are all over the place and literally throwback from the early 2000s or the same styles but different names from the 2010s.
You forgot the Lady gaga effect on fashion (more on fashion of the musical industry), "weird" clothes, more experimental makeup/ hair color, hair bows, gothic glam... there was a shift because of Lady Gaga that we dont talk enough about. Even Beyonce style/music find more freedom since gaga...

As a former pastel goth/grunge teen, i still have so many clothes from that era and honestly i reuse them now as kind of an e-girl fashion. Pleated high rise skirts never really died and cropped shirts are still very much in fashion, and even colored hair still passes, so I'm glad i can relive my 14yo fantasy again hahahah

These styles are way more attractive than the nude tones everyone is trying to go for now. There were a lot of aesthetics to choose from to match your personality. And it left room to be creative and individualize yourself
People really hate on this era of fashion but I personally love it, I regularly refer to myself as “stuck in 2010” because I love the look of skater dresses and Jeffrey Campbell litas and high low dresses 🥰

A LOT of what is popular from those styles can be directly traced back to Mori and Natural Kei which were both Japanese street fashions that were popular in the late 2000's in Japan. They ended up getting international popularity through tumblr in the early 2010's.
Even now a lot of the pinterest and traces of polyvore fashion boards floating around the internet that we associate with cottage core, fairy core etc. were actually created in the early 2010's during the J-fashion boom on tumblr.

Mock this fashion era all you want, but I will be forever grateful for it for popularizing high rise jeans. As an insecure fat kid, those pants made me feel stylish and cute. Some (many) of the other trends haven’t aged nearly as well but I’ll always prefer high rise pants over other styles

I think an honorable mention should be Disney Bounding. While not necessarily a collected style of certain clothes, it was definitely its own “aesthetic”, was insanely popular on Tumblr, instantly recognizable, and definitely entered mainstream fashion.

When people bound as Snow White they typically wear a blue top, a yellow skirt or bottoms, and then some red accessories. Just look up Disney bounding and you’ll see lots of examples on Google images. I’m not entirely sure about the history of people wearing Mickey ears, though wearing them isn’t exclusive to bounding, nor does every bound use them

Unpopular opinion: you gotta wait around 20 years to be able to judge a period in fashion *somewhat* objectively. Back in 2010-2015 we all despised early 2000s fashion, then in mid 2010s late 2000s/early 2010s fashion became uncool. Now look at us wearing late 90s and early 2000s trends and watching films from that era for inspiraton.
In other words:
2000-2015 fashion is not better or worse than any other decade. It WILL COME BACK. Beware! (yes I'm terrified too)

After 10 years, she would miss that days and she would think that some of those memories were cute. 2010s were bad for me, i hated the trends that day and I still do. But 10 years later we will "remember" some trends were not that bad. Its kind of like nostalgia. 2010's will eventually come back and actually, Im starting to see some slight 2010's aspect. Unfortunately. But I do not think that terrible ones would come back.

Honestly of all the aesthetics, Pastel Goth felt the most fresh to me. I remember when I first started coming across it around 2015 and thinking “finally something different and actually interesting”. The way it married elements of goth with japanese harajuku styles is a fascinating example of the coming together of two counter culture aesthetics from two very different parts of the world.

maybe its just my experience but back then it seemed like every girl was on tumblr looking at these styles but no one ever dressed that way in person, or even attempted to. no teenage girl could afford a whole wardrobe like this, or think of a photo-worthy outfit to go to school in every day. but despite the seemingly clear demand for this type of style, for a while it seemed like you couldnt find clothes in any colours besides black/white/grey or muted earth tones like beige, olive green, maroon, navy blue. maybe it was just in my area or my budget but the general attitude was: “only buy safe, staple pieces in basic colours so you can make as many outfits as possible with them”. so when this brief wave of holographic/neon/galaxy print stuff popped up in actual stores i was like… well at least people are having fun
yea it seemed like only the aesthetic kids and celebs/influencers actually wore these things, most kids and people in general wore whatever was in stock at the store. and i think its always been like this for example the collective mind associates the 80s with loud neon tights under leotards, but everyday 80s wear was just a lot of brown and muted colors

People definitely did go hard into tumblr fashion irl, but I was the perfect age for it at the time. I started university in the early 2010s, so I had my first experience of an income and freedom from school uniforms/ daily parental scrutiny right at the prime moment for that site to fill my teen goth heart with galaxy garter-clip tights, chokers and stud-adorned cropped bustiers. I did physics labs with stiletto nails. My black-pink-purple ombre hair stained my sheets. I developed a whole new eating technique to spare my deep plum liquid lipstick. I worked demonic tutoring hours to get my Litas and Docs (which I still have, wear and love). I'm not that girl anymore, especially after spending most of the last year in PJs, but I regret nothing XD

I think a fashion style that overlaps with a lot of styles here was “dork” style, which was influenced by tumblr fandoms as the 2010s when being a nerd was cool now, and things like comic-con becoming less stigmatized. This fashion included a lot of fandom shirts , buttons, coats, suspenders, cardigans, big glasses, died hair, etc. Its basically hot topic when they transitioned from emo to fandom-y

I will say that I remember the “twee” aesthetic being much more size-inclusive than others. I think part of this had to do with Modcloth’s larger range of sizes. When I think of this style I often picture a plus-size model.
This is a really good point because while the most popular photos shown here lean extremely thin, there was a very considerable movement towards body positivity, and larger fashion bloggers were a big part of that. Retro inspired styles, because of their hyperfemininity, relative modesty, and figure flattering/hourglass enhancing cuts (including high waisted pants/shorts/skirts, which became a staple for everyone) became a strong option for a lot of average to plus sized people to embrace and show off their body shape, feel fashionable and feminine in a traditional sense (and thus fight perceptions that fat people can't be stylish or beautiful), and still have some degree of coverage or shaping to areas of the body they were less comfortable with. The number of plus sized fashion brands and bloggers that were hyped about high rise waists on every type of bottom was significant, especially since it allowed a reprieve from the super low rise, belly exposing fashion of the 2000s. Twee/retro inspired fashion was really important amongst body positivity fashion influencers of the time (think Tess Holiday), even if tumblr aesthetic photos prioritized stick thin bodies.
"Twee fashion" was actually more commonly called Granny Chic on tumblr back in the day.... and I don't think I've ever abandoned it lol

I know a lot of people seem to hate this decade’s clothes but I really had a blast dressing myself during that time! I was in my late teens/early 20’s and I loved tumbler. I was so excited when I finally got my American Apparel skirt! I definitely was a big fan of soft grunge, hipster, Twee and Kawaii influenced fashion. You’re absolutely right when you pointed out how a big part of fashion then was to use your items in various different ways. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
People always hate stuff from one decade ago! But then, usually the trend comes back in a different way. I feel like most of these items only look dated if you style them exactly how they did then, but a lot of pieces could still be worn today.
Same for me. Except for some things that I'm glad are gone. And honestly 2000s fashion is much uglier to me in general and yet a lot people love it now. So in a few years people will be rocking their vintage mustache shirt from the thrift store 😅

As an Asian, more specifically Chinese, the so called Kawaii style is still a style that is fairly popular in China, South Korea and Japan. It's a little modified of course as now the aesthetic leans to princess or fairy aesthetic. So, it's not true that it didn't had an impact in the fashion world. Please, don't make the western world or the US be the centre of the world, bc it's not. The fashion world is not specifically western fashion.

This! I've noticed over the past 5-7 years trends in Korea and Japan trickle over to the West like a year or two later (sometimes several years later)! For example, thigh high socks was a big trend in Japanese fashion during the mid-late 2000s and weren't widely available in Western shops until 2013/2014. I can't comment on Chinese fashion, since I'm not very familiar with it. I do know that aspects of Chinese fashion, like Mandarin collars and certain textiles/fabrics, cycle through Western fashion consistently throughout the 21st century.
Japanese street style is having a big impact here. You can even see it on tiktok with the socks, e-girls, and etc. I can even see a bold harajuku style influence

I've definitely seen the "soft grunge" "1975/ arctic monkeys fan" style come back a little on tiktok but in a nostalgic way. Instead of using the 90s inspiration, the tumblr style itself is the inspiration.
As an ex-tumblr kid who spent a lot of time looking at fashion pics, I'd like to make a note about the "kawaii" segment of the video. While I was too young at the time to remember the intricacies of how or why this style gained popularity, I will say that I don't think that the style originated from sweet lolita. Rather, it was a combination between various j-fashion styles and the mainstream western trends at the time. If memory serves right, the style here dubbed as "kawaii" actually encompassed different j-fashion styles that had active communities on tumblr: himekaji, otome, fairy kei, and yes, lolita. The photos shown throughout this segment of the video mostly belong to the himekaji ("princess casual") style, as far as I can tell. There was also a significant overlap (as there always has been, at least in the West) between these j-fashion communities on tumblr and the broader tumblr fandom culture, *especially* when it comes to anime. Anime (at least in my personal experience) is the most common way that people get exposed to j-fashion, so that was incredibly influential to the aesthetic as a whole. This is why items like pleated skirts (a nod to school uniforms) and t-shirts and crop tops with anime-style graphics were so ubiquitous to the style on tumblr.
TLDR: I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that the tumblr kawaii aesthetic originated from sweet lolita. It instead combined several different j-fashion styles with mainstream fashion trends. It was also heavily influenced by anime, both in terms of the literal clothes worn by anime characters (school uniforms), and in terms of the overall emphasis on bright colors and 2D graphics.

hipsters piss me off the most because they hated so much on "basic people" and still dressed pretty similar to them, only on a darker color palette and switching the floral print for plaid... and they acted like liking coffee and wearing glasses was a personality trait even though half of the world population does that
I was very much unknowingly hipster. I had glasses (had them since i was a kid and still need them), I was into punk and indie music, I was an artist and everyone knew me as the art kid, and dressed more alternative, and I hate coffee which is funny. But I totally agree that basically all the fashion was the same but darker.

ikr, sure it's a bit toned down as opposed to most alt fashion/subcultures, but it's perfect for an actual alt kid like me when I'm too lazy to dress up in several layers in hot weather lmao. It also works for me when I'm trying to go to places where there are dress codes and I still want to be seen as "alt" (also, strict, conservative, religious Asian parents). Also, minus the romanticization of dr*gs and mental illnesses, the music and everything else is really chill. :)

I had a problem with skater skirts. I have a rectangle body shape and some love handles. The two skater skirts I had always my stomach look extra paunchy. Perhaps if my waist were smaller compared to my hips. It seems nice that the waist is smaller, but the lack of structure in the rest of the skirt…never could feel confident in it

This completely reminds me of the “Supernatural” fashion trend in fandom. Ripped blue jeans, a black tee or tank, and then a layer of flannel with brown leather boots or combat boots was the basic staple. I remember this one girl who switched from glasses to contacts because she said “it was more practical to hunt in” (referring to the show). We all felt like badasses with our salt and iron packets in our bags lol

@ankitha mahesh I have these Indian-Harem-ish type pants that my bf's mom bought for me. I like them, but there's definitely a fine line for me to walk as a white person. I know they were actually made in Nepal & fair trade so I feel slightly better.

And nowadays I try to avoid "ethnic" mostly South Asian clothes when shopping. It's just too much of a metaphorical minefield. And sometimes I get overwhelmed it's hard and I truly don't want to offend anyone.

I was always exposed to all aspects of every culture since its integrated in the whole culture of my country. Americans might tend to be more away from their culture bcs of generations of slavery. But claiming bindis would just be weird like thats obviously not african culture. So pls tell me.

I think the 2010’s fashion was the best era for for flattering shapes and styles. I still wear skater skirts, a line dresses, skinny jeans and many of the 2010 staples because it looks best on my body shape. The 2000’s was all about using your body as the main accessory whereas in the 2010s we kind of went balls to the wall with everything.
I think some honourable mentions would be moustache print, owl necklaces, galaxy print and the nerd aesthetic.

It worked really well on her body type and overall appeal at the time. Back then her public image was still very conservative, but she always managed to look classy and well put together. She also popularized Keds. I would say that the 1989 era was still extremely put together in terms of fashion, still holding that classy aspect but more influential and modern, she mastered the “politician’s wife” aesthetic. Her street style was flawless at the time, but I wouldn’t really idolize it since she said it herself that that was her worst time with her eating disorder and the paps were ruthless.

As someone who lives in Iran there was not much variety in fashion aesthetics ( or you can say there was not any aesthetic) but with the rise of internet we got so many inspiration from outside world and in the past ten years you can see some similarities in generally iranian fashion to soft grunge , goth ,art hoe and also basic fashion .
I think the soft grunge look holds up well because it also has a lot of punk influence which has been around since the 70s and at this point I would basically call it a timeless alternative look. E girl fashion is a rehash of soft grunge as well I think.

Yes, the correlation made me a bit confused. I remember it was my favourite trend as a teen and it was mostly westernized cheap otome, himekaji, etc. Lolita has it own trends and it rarely is influenced by outer trends and vice versa

quick correction:
kawaii as a subculture existed in the 1970s and ranges into a whole bunch of japanese street fashion not just lolita such as decora, gyaru, etc... lolita fashion first made its way around the late 1980s- 1990s and didn't get its name until roughly the 1990s or early 2000s.
I'm still a big fan of 2010s style, and way prefer it to 00s style. Some of the galaxy print, moustache and owl printed stuff was pretty cringey (even at the time) but across the board styles like twee and soft grunge were both pretty flattering and inoffensive and I'm still a big fan of both. Wil be excited when skater skirts become popular again!

And looking at all the styles again, they're actually not that bad at all. All they need is some polishing up and modernization. Many of them have great basic pieces that definitely still look good now (heck i'm still wearing clothes i bought from early 2010s and i don't look out of place at all)

i dressed in the really cheap "kawaii" and "pastel goth" inspired clothes i could get my mom to buy as a teenager-- now, i'm an adult, and dress in "jirai kei"! i think it's a perfect blend of the two, and it looks more 'grown up'.

I feel like “basic” tumblr fashion was so easily popularized bc fast fashion was growing exponentially and was extremely accessible and cheap. There wasn’t really a big sustainable clothing push that I can remember. Ofc, there’s still a ridiculous amt of fast fashion now, but I feel that there is also a strong sustainable clothing movement w/i Gen Z and Millennials.

Pencil skirts really haven't ever gone out of fashion. You can find examples of women wearing it consistently from the 1940s onward. It has a strong association with women's office workwear. There was a point in the 90s were A-line skirts were more common but the pencil skirt was still there. I think what has changed is the rise (mid rise, low rise, high waisted) and if you tucked the blouse in or not as well as where it was worn. Like you were less likely to see pencil skirts worn in casual settings because of its association with workwear. Bandage skirts are an interesting take on pencil skirts in making them tighter and more casual but they weren't even new, my mom wore bandage skirts to clubs in the 80s.

on a practical order, pencil skirts are comfier to wear while sitting regularly, not like other skirts that you have skin contact with chairs and surfaces (imagine be seated in a leather chair in hot summer or in a suddenly cold plastic surface), while not flowing everywhere around while you move. Also while plated tenis skirts look preppy and all, they make you look childish (for their asociation to schoolwear), unlike pencil skirt that gives you a mature outlook. Trends nowadays keep forgeting that women's fashion is not only for teenagers.
you know, when i was in middle school in like 2015 in poland we talked about the "tumblr style' and 'tumblr girl' and there was no separation of different aesthetics, just a collective of these styles like twee, blogger, hipster, soft grunge that are very very similiar plus some sporty adidas clothes and that was it, the tumblr girl fashion

A lot of these 2010s aesthetics are actually just sub fashion categories that we still use today. E girl is just Pastel goth without the pastel. Soft girl is just Kwai style without the Japanese influence. Not much has changed except for clothes are more revealing now. The 2010s was more inventive and memorable while now the styles are all over the place and literally throwback from the early 2000s or the same styles but different names from the 2010s.
To be fair, there was a lot of 90s and 80s throwback fashion back in the early 2010s

As a former pastel goth/grunge teen, i still have so many clothes from that era and honestly i reuse them now as kind of an e-girl fashion. Pleated high rise skirts never really died and cropped shirts are still very much in fashion, and even colored hair still passes, so I'm glad i can relive my 14yo fantasy again hahahah

These styles are way more attractive than the nude tones everyone is trying to go for now. There were a lot of aesthetics to choose from to match your personality. And it left room to be creative and individualize yourself
People really hate on this era of fashion but I personally love it, I regularly refer to myself as “stuck in 2010” because I love the look of skater dresses and Jeffrey Campbell litas and high low dresses 🥰
There are certain aspects I HATE but then others i love. All the basic white girl stuff yeah can burn in fire but the hipster, grunge, and pastel goth, and art hoe stuff is still pretty nice
