Nancy did care about her friends, about Bonnie and Rochelle at least even if she never trusted or was always jealous of Sarah because her powers were natural. But that's the tragedy - somewhere along the movie, along her obsession, her mindset changed from 'We're friends, we'll look out for each other even if no one else will' to 'I was their friend when no-one else would be, they owe me'. That's her tragic storyline arc.
The change is in the fact that once she was given power it revealed what her reasons for being her friends was it wasn’t because she cared for them it’s because she needed to have things. She wanted to have friends so she found the rejected people of their school because she was a rejected person it wasn’t about them being individually unique it was about them or having a common enemy. Because they were all rejected by the social groups of their school they ended up together it’s not so much that they selected each other but that no one selected them and once they start stripping away the things that made them different or taking away the hurdles that separated them from the rest of the world they began to outlive the bond that was formed by them being outcasts.

@@oooh19 i’m not saying that Nancy completely did not feel for these girls. Spend enough time with any person you’ll start to form bonds of sympathy with them regardless of whether or not you want to or not. Go read interviews and books written by profilers about serial killers in a lot of ways they will be incredibly sympathetic to these people even though they have butchered and murdered and taken pleasure in that butchery in murder but you spent 24 hours talking to someone and tell me you won’t find bonds of connection with them. Nancy connect them because they were outcasts but once the girls start stripping away the things that essentially made them outcast from their peer group and took away those threats Nancy no longer had a peel. For Nancy who started out with nothing (poor/Bad home life) and was already in a situation where she was the lesser within a group (school/Society in general) to then create your own group and then slowly watch as your power over that group starts to dissipate had to be incredibly terrifying to her, which would’ve made her react exactly how she did in the movie. The only difference is we only saw the first act of suspicion and spite on Nancy’s part. If Nancy had succeeded and the girls had killed Sarah, she would undoubtably have turned on another one of them and my guess would have been Bonnie. When it comes to Bonnie and Rochelle; Rochelle‘s thing can never change. There’s always going to be racism, there’s always going to be racist, and so she’s always going to have to deal with it, so she’s always going to to some extent need her coven. Bonnie however healed her scars and was now attractive. Her arrogance and ego was building, that would’ve bumped heads with Nancy’s arrogance and ego. They would’ve imploded and it wouldn’t have been a matter of if but when. Which would’ve left Rochelle and Nancy and that just do the personality probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer. I also imagine that there would have eventually been a conversation that I’ve seen before between poor white people and black people where parallels are being drawn between these two situations and it almost always offends black people. Nancy may have loved these girls to some extent but ultimately they were a means to an emotionally selfish end and a coping mechanism that once she had power became expendable because of her own arrogance.
It also would have been great to see the deleted scene where she interacts with her parents. The pressure to succeed in predominately white school, the swim team, combined with a eating disorder would have provided a lot of understanding of Rochelle's character and why somebody like her would gravitate toward the coven.
I wrote this already, but I would have prefer the kids being anti Semitic towards to rochelles character than racist (Rachel true is actually half Jewish, and rochelle’s last name is Jewish). It would have been interesting since it’s a catholic school, and she’s Jewish. Plus there’s the added layer to her dabbling in the Wicca religion

Rochelle wearing her natural hair was much appreciated by me growing up. There are only a few black girls on camera, even now, allowed to wear their hair out. Growing up as "the only black girl" at a predominately white school it would have been easy for her to be represented with relaxed hair or other straight styles.

If you do a headcount of how many "black" characters are wearing their natural hair on tv and movies right now, the majority of those actresses are half white. That goes beyond just hair, but they do let mixed actresses and those with a certain hair type wear their natural hair in films/shows more so. Rachel True is just another example of this. She is mixed race with a looser curl pattern. Notice on the show Half and Half, Rachel True got to wear her natural hair, but her fully black co-star, Essence Atkins' hair was straightened. I think the media is more accepting of natural hair when the curl pattern is looser and when it's on the heads of mixed race actresses.
I never knew about Rochelle's actor insight about the racism but I do feel for what she said back then about "ok so i suffer racism but whats my actual problem?" because yeah many people of color are so used to racism that its like 'yeah that happens' myself included and I have to agree that adding an eating disorder would make her more *real* looking at all the other girls problems as well
The craft is iconic. Its sad to see people often dismiss it as just a chick flick. It's actually a very dark movie. I literally watch it every halloween
It's kind of sad how 'chick flicks' in general are dismissed as being shallow or unimportant. It takes talent to make a good movie, and Mean Girls, Clueless, Heathers, etc. are classics for a reason. I swear, people just hate on things that teenage girls like for no real reason.

This movie is so iconic, and the costumes are so on point. Robin Tunney's wig was NEVER convincing to me, though the studio insisted that she wear it, since she'd shaved her head for "Empire Records."
For some reason it never clicked to me that Nancy switches the cheap PVC for a more durable, higher quality leather coat of a similar cut but I love that detail. Also a huge fan of her little matching set once they've come into the money & moved to a new place but my fave is Bonnie and the look you see when she whips off the big coat, with her white T-shirt, the thigh highs, the braid keeping her hair back. It's a moment!

The quote is only partially true - the late 90's-early 00's iteration of goth hasn't fully come about yet as a global fashion phenomena. It hits its stride with electronica/raver culture that was adopted by musical acts such as the Aphex Twins, Marilyn Manson, and post-*Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* Smashing Pumpkins, then was heavilly featured in The Matrix.

You kind of mentioned it with Rochelle, but forgot to mention how Bonnie's final outfit reflects how she has changed for the worse. She is wearing a long sleeved dress that hugs her body, but has it all buttoned up and covers her skin. She still has her insecurities, but she masks them with her new-found arrogance. It's as if she's saying "If I'm going to be a mess, at least I can look great while at it".
This movie is so good. I'd love a long breakdown of what's considered a "Witchy Look", and how classic witch imagery has turned into modern fashion for Witch characters (The Craft, AHS Coven, Practical Magic) and what garments feature (pointed toe boots, wide brim hats, etc) But perhaps this would take too long.

Idk if this is what the writers intended but when the character that bullies Rochelle looses her hair, it was such a pivotal moment becuz the girl attacked Rochelle's hair calling it nappy as many black women are ridiculed for. And now the bully looses the long straight blonde hair that is deemed "better" than other hair textures.

Like the other person who replied, I was also gonna say maybe start small, like with jewelry and makeup changes. You can do so much with just eyeliner, if you wear makeup. Just doing your brows or liner differently can change your whole face towards the look you're going for. Maybe then try different skirts and coats/cardigans and shoes. I just think why not try it, trying new styles is so fun and what's the worst that can happen? You end up with some more clothes you can just incorporate into other outfits? Cheers :)
The outfit Nancy wears when the girls come to her new apartment has stuck with me since I first saw the film. It’s simple but I’m a sucker for a two piece set. Particularly the pants. I’m also so thankful they rewrote Rochelle’s character to be black but they definitely could’ve given her more to work with.

I wish they’d make a sequel where Nancy breaks out of the mental health facility and hunts down the other girls who have since gone their separate ways. They all still practice magic though, each one with a different style and specialty.
As an old 90s Goth, I can honestly say, particularly the scene with them all sitting at the back of the bus, that the look was very true to life. The only Black witch character in media that hasn’t been done dirty is Marie Laveau from AHS: Coven. She was a badass and selfish yet strong character that didn’t take shit from anyone, even the supreme Witch Fiona. Aside from her, all the other Black witches in fiction are portrayed as practically subservient to a white lead.
I always have mixed feelings about Rochelle’s story. The bully wouldn’t stop and after her bully started experiencing consequences, they are informed they can’t undo the spells. They have to run their course. Maybe racist bullies are meant to be bald 🤷🏽♀️ Was she supposed to continue being terrorized by a racist? Idk I just understand her dilemma.
i really feel like they could have given her an actual story. as a black woman, racism isn't really a story or a development. black people do other things during the day, where they dont worry about what racists are going to do to harm them. she deserved a real background
It was because that no matter what justifications they used for getting revenge with Magic, it would come back on them. Chris was as much of a bully too. But because Sarah and Rochelle are actually good people deep down they feel bad about hurting another human being in a way their bullies couldn't.

Her bullying is that she is a middle class girl no different than anyone else yet she's still considered as "not belonging" because she's black. I think at the time there were a lot of issues with that. Beverly Hills 90210 did an episode on that too.
I love the video, I just want to point out that the grey she’s wearing in the end is most likely a magic reference. To “Grey Witches” people who believe magic is both black and white; they believe in practicing whatever magic they need to, using spells to defend themselves etc. without the “black magic” “it will come back on you times three” concern.

No such thing as black or white magic. Magic is just a tool. Who wields it determines how it's used. Think of a hammer. It can be used to build things or bludgeon.

Also Lyrio tells Sarah that magic is neither fully black or white. It depends on the intention of the witch. Plus by the end Sarah have Manon on her side
It's her eyes, they're unmistakable! She was adorable in RtO, it's was one of my faves growing up. Having been used to darker and weirder films I had no idea there was a controversy surrounding it for being "too dark" for a kids movie. I mean Mombi was terrifying and the Wheelers are scary, but that's what makes it fun.
Why is it interesting, relevant and progressive scenes so often get cut? Nancy confronting the group, in a short period of time offered us backstories, highlighted a power struggle, showed that she care and felt underappreciated.
As a teen in the 90s myself, we did not know pvc was associated with sex work. It was in all the stores and people bought it. I had a pvc purse that was plum colored.
Rochelle was always my fav. I thought she was funny, beautiful and I loved how she sported her hair at a time not everyone was doing that. I like how the actress still sported a boho-esque style in her later projects, too.

Yes? But actually no. Heathers came out before this; characters in these 80s-90s movies were essentially their own subgenre. The characters were always the protagonist, the leader, the follower, and the odd girl out. I love this subgenre but it definitely has a basis.

I just think that the whole "toxic friends" trope was as prevalent, or rather, it's not "fake friends" (like in Heathers), from the get-go, it's a genuine friendship, even if shrowded by Nancy's jealousy (which also goes into the point of "dynamics" and doing that differently). Even in Mean Girls in the 2000s, they did the whole "Faux friends" thing which is odd because you'd assume the progression would be earlier, but with this, it was a progression of power and jealousy as said in the video, and they're treated as nuanced characters (less so with certain aspects, but the dynamic).
I think people will seek connections even if it is not in their best interest to do so. Each girl had their own motivations for joining the coven, but I think Sarah was honestly looking for friends and maybe by understanding magic more, rekindling her connection with her mother.
Could you please do a analysis of each of the costumes worn by the three main ladies in Death Becomes Her. A amazing comedy with amazing costumes designs, that I haven't seen a analysis of. Would love to see you talk about the costumes of Madeline; Helen and Lisa, especially as there's a interesting symbolism in colours (Madeline in blue or white and Helen in red), and just how the costumes are still trendy and wearable, much like in The Devil Wears Prada. Also Isabella Rossellini in the bejewelled breast plate is stunning!
Keeping within the witchy theme an style analysis of the OG Charmed would be amazing. The series was such a time capsule of early 90’s/2000’s fashions. Each sister was so unique, and they also covered almost every era of fashion throughout the series. So there would be a lot to talk about.

Spot on analysis, as always! I love how each witch corresponds to a certain element, as per their main power. Sarah is Earth, since she's the most grounded and realistic, Air suits Nancy, since she's the most wild and unpredictable, Bonnie is Fire, since she's compassionate, at least initially, and was burned by fire, and Rochelle is Water, since she simply goes with the flow, and is more gentle and accepting than the other girls.
Isn't Nancy Air and Bonnie Fire in the movie though? I thought Nancy being Air was a nice contrast to Sarah who is Earth. Sarah who remained grounded as opposed to Nancy who got swept away.
Black actresses are always slighted in witch movies or tv series. Take Bonnie from The Vampire Diaries. She was treated terribly in the script despite having the biggest potential for more. Nina Dobrev who couldn’t keep it professional and continue after her breakup with Ian Somerhalder got a better ending when she finally returned than Kat Graham who stayed and carried the show.
You’re 100% right, and I don’t say this to detract from your point, but Nina Dobrev didn’t leave cause of Ian Somerhalder, she finished her contract and she didn’t want to renew it. I can totally believe this because by season 6 the show was on the rails, and she was the only one that had some star power cause she was a lead so she took advantage of it. But I’m glad that Kat Graham got a ton of success after the show. She’s got the Netflix movies, all eyes on me; the philanthropy, etc. she’s only going up
I agree with your point about Bonnie from TVD it’s so noticeable after rewatching the series and seeing her vogue get ready with me she was forced to wear wigs all the time. But I do agree with the other commenter I don’t think Nina Dobrev is to blame for the industry/ writers and or stylists mistakes with Kat. Her (Nina) contract was up and she had ever right to leave, but Kat deserved/ deserves better treatment by the entertainment industry for sure 🥺
Marie Laveau from AHS was an amazing character that was powerful and victorious. That may have to do with her being played by Angela Bassett though since the other Black witches like Queenie were written terribly.

Nowadays I think Rochelle would be considered biracial instead of black. Back in the 90s mixed people were not really allowed to be mixed. It was still very Jim Crowe. If you were white blended with any other ethnicity, you were supposed to be 100% the non-white ethnicity. Based on the idea that white had to be “pure“. I think showing Rochelle’s biracial family would’ve been very valuable.
I didn’t know the extent of what Rachel went through and is still going through :( her not getting to present at the awards show not and not getting invited to the conventions with the rest of them is unacceptable, I’m not sure what her castmates have said on this but if it were me I would insist she be included and not attend things she wasn’t invited to, that’s so messed up

This movie is a classic. And I'm glad you mentioned the sequel as awful. I disagree with the costume designer that said Goth wasn't a thing. Goth has been a subculture since the 80s. It just wasn't as popular in America as it became later on.
I was a teenager when the craft came out and goth was a big thing at the time. I remember the craft coming out and suddenly more girls who never even wore black were dressing like Nancy. This was one of the movies that had a huge influence on culture at the time. Girls I knew who never had any interest in witch craft were suddenly high level witches, and we're buying up books on spells at Walden's bookstore.
As a child the craft aesthethic was my EVERYTHING! Specially Rochelle's outfits. And I never noticed Sarah's wig (except for the blonde one) now I can't unsee it.

I really wish they would have done a re-release to theatre’s with all the cut scenes included. A “Directors Cut”. I know they would have made more money than the original theatrical release. They would have had all us old fogey Gen X’ers in there but also the new kids. Dang… it was a missed opportunity that could have been epic.
It would have been a great benefit to have looked more in depth in to the goth subculture to understand how Nancy was dressing. The comment included about Goth not existing before the Craft included is just not accurate. And many of the styling is not just witch styling. However, loved the video it was really well analysed. :P
Exactly. Plus, goth fashion is as diverse as its music. There is no such thing asa definitive goth like. Since goth fashion is all about DIY, it's supposed to look unique and different, but many people seem to be missing the point of goth fashion. Besides, goth is a music- based subculture. Goth is all about the music, and darkness, and the fashion should reflect that.
Nancy's look was my aesthetic when this film came out (I was 24 then and it still is my aesthetic) but I loved all of the looks in this, honestly. I had done the rosary-as-fashion as a teen, and I was pretty stoked to see this as a thing on screen. However: TIL that was a wig on Robin! I always thought her hairline looked a little odd, but it never occurred to me that she was bewigged. One of my longtime fave films, kind of a comfort movie tbh.
i think purely from an aesthetic perspective, Nancy is the one we commonly associate with witchcraft today in my personal opinion she comes second to the wicked witch of the west... which thinking about it is funny because fairuza played Dorothy in that one adaptation

I freaking LOVE Epire Records!! I do have to agree, though, that the wig was a good idea. I'm sure Robin looked adorable with pixie hair but long hair kinda softened her look which was appropriate for her character
I don't have a favorite, but I do like how they subverted the role of each character's elements. Usually, air is usually associated with goodness, so I liked that Nancy was associated with that
I’m 27 & one of the main reasons I miss high school was having the opportunity every day to experiment with my style choices & try out looks I was inspired by from films or editorials. I LOVED it. I also loved the compliments I would get ahahah didn’t get enough attention at home lolll
Regarding continuity errors, the most glaring one in my opinion was the beach scene with the beached marine life. Nancy runs up to the first shark(?), but in the wide shot before that scene there is a completely different species in that same spot. Regardless, it was still a great movie!
to me the movie went bad when Nancy walks off the water and says to "Maneau"? You're inside of me now....it was quite badly acted. Apart from that scene it was a fun movie.

There was a scene where we got to see Nancy's home life, it's a pretty low income house. But other than that yeah the costume department didn't really do a good job a showing that Nancy is poor. For starters, Alternative Clothing is very expensive and I have known a few people who wear Alternative Clothing and are poor. They usually just wear the same t-shirts, jacket, pants, and shoes everyday; and don't have a new wardrobe every day. Maybe Nacy steals her clothes like she did in the magic shop 🤷♀️ But another thing that doesn't make sense about Nancy is that how is she supposed to be so poor that she steal stuff, but yet she still able to to go to a Catholic School. I've never been to a Catholic School but I've heard that they're expensive to enroll in. I feel like it would have made more sense if the coven attended a Public High School as opposed to a Catholic School, because that would have made more sense for Nancy's character.

The latex jacket she probably stole, but everything else she wears was thriftable, and really you need to remember that thrifting back then was not trendy and prices were not what they're today! A lot of poor people have (and had even back then) a lot of clothes. It's not the amount! You can have a lot of trash, it's still cheap trash, but if you know how to style it, anything looks good. As for the school, she maybe got a scholarship to go, or they had a "help the poor" program. Personally I'd say her dad pays for it. We never see him (just the step dad) so have no way of knowing, but it could be that in the divorce they settled that as childsupport he pays for the school. I mean, I know it feels like it "doesn't fit", but it's also very realistic. I'm also wondering about the step-dad like what did he do to have such a big life insurance? You don't get one of those if you're piss poor, so either he was wealthier at some point or had a secure job, so there was money somewhere.
I wish Rochelle and Rachel True got more respect from the fans and Hollywood she is such an amazing person. I wonder why her castmates never spoke up about her mistreatment and erasure though? Like wouldn't you have become friends or at least cordial while on set enough to see how uncomfortable and left out she was?
I have a love-hate relationship with this movie. To me, Sarah was the blandest character, but got to be the hero. I related to Bonnie and Rochelle they most. They had so much potential but were portrayed as shallow and cowardly with no redemption at the end. I completely understand Nancy's descent into power-hungry madness, but the overall ending just felt so hollow to me. I walked away feeling like all of it was for nothing. The preppy girl wins, the shy girl and the black girl are back to being social outcasts, the scary goth girl was trouble all along...the status quo is just reinstated. I think I can rewatch this movie if I just stop at the part where they do the ritual on the beach, lol.
Wait so Nancy only became their friend bc it made her feel like a superior savior looking over the out cast so she doesn’t feel alone in her own misery? Damn.
Another thing that should be of note, Sarah is the only redhead of the group and is considered the "natural" witch. Red hair often symbolises having strong magical affinity or a stronger connection to the occult.
I love how they used colors to depict the witch that still has her powers, aka the good with is the the deadliest and most powerful of them all. Sarah is rarely dressed in all black, which in Santeria/Palo/Vodun/Lucumi/IFa black is the color that absorbs evil and demonic spirits, which is why from the start you already know who is the bad witch, Nancy. The fact Sarah didn't just got her powers, she inherited, which again in many African belief systems is true and with generation getting more powerful than the last due to adding to the craft/practices from previous generations. The whole "The water is never far from the source/ its origins." is true. Sarah is shown wearing all white (or in her case silver a reflective color similar to white or very pale black), which in the African beliefs it is the color that reflects and defects evil and with time signifies the top hierarchy of many religions (in Sarahs' case would be Santera in Santeria, Iyalawo in Ifa, Lucumi and Palo, Mambo in Vodun). This movie is so underrated at how much it takes from other religions and not just simply European Peganism and Wiccan witchcraft and beliefs. It also teaches not to mess with forces that you don't fully understand or have the bloodlines dealing with. BTW, Goth has always been around since 1970s. Please do more research... stupid producers and directors!!! 🙃
When I first watched this movie i was absolutely terrified of Nancy downs her portrayal of this sad and broken character turning into the monster she never wanted to be was absolutely terrifying all down to he facial expressions and the way she held herself on screen.
Sometimes I amaze myself at the amount of iconic movies that I've never seen. Definitely adding The Craft to my list of spooky movies to watch this month. And paying super close attention to their outfits.
I remember watching this as a teen learning about witchcraft, etc. I didn't realize at the time "the right way" comment was meant as "she considered" suicide, I for some reason thought it was a weird reference to a witchy ritual or something.
When it comes to "The Craft", I think everyone has a favorite. But to be honest, I always looked at the girls as "Eternal Sisters", and I found it hard to pick just one as a favorite. And if I had to do a sequel to this movie, I would explore that bond between them. Especially when Nancy is returns to the modern world. Just because Bonnie, Rochelle, and Nancy are limited to their powers that wouldn't mean they still wouldn't be linked to Sarah. And I wished they would have done that in "Legacy" to show this because regardless, they're still witches, that bond never dies.
I love your line in the end about how Sarah is dressing for a brighter future- you can see a little glimpse of an Express shopping bag as if to underscore that point. We see her at the start of the movie in disheveled clothes that are probably well-worn in, and at the end we see her in a pretty new dress that emphasizes that Sarah is now looking towards the future as seen by her recent shopping spree.
I always loved Richelles' storyline with her racism and hair. Seeing her "bully/enemy" vulnerable without hair was sooo good! I agree she should have had the parents in there.
I just found this channel and watched The Craft for the first time today so I could have context for this video. Now I'm rewatching Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. Thanks for the amazing content
I really can not get enough of this channel! It's like Modern Gurlz is Psychoanalyzing the outfits to the characters rather than the characters to the outfits.
I was curious to learn more about Bonnie's wardrobe "inversions". It was brought up with the promise of being explained later, but never mentioned again. Bummer!
Nancy did care about her friends, about Bonnie and Rochelle at least even if she never trusted or was always jealous of Sarah because her powers were natural. But that's the tragedy - somewhere along the movie, along her obsession, her mindset changed from 'We're friends, we'll look out for each other even if no one else will' to 'I was their friend when no-one else would be, they owe me'. That's her tragic storyline arc.
The change is in the fact that once she was given power it revealed what her reasons for being her friends was it wasn’t because she cared for them it’s because she needed to have things. She wanted to have friends so she found the rejected people of their school because she was a rejected person it wasn’t about them being individually unique it was about them or having a common enemy. Because they were all rejected by the social groups of their school they ended up together it’s not so much that they selected each other but that no one selected them and once they start stripping away the things that made them different or taking away the hurdles that separated them from the rest of the world they began to outlive the bond that was formed by them being outcasts.
I watched Eli Roth's history of horror. The episode of witches. The director said Nancy was the addict once she got power she has more.

@@oooh19 i’m not saying that Nancy completely did not feel for these girls. Spend enough time with any person you’ll start to form bonds of sympathy with them regardless of whether or not you want to or not. Go read interviews and books written by profilers about serial killers in a lot of ways they will be incredibly sympathetic to these people even though they have butchered and murdered and taken pleasure in that butchery in murder but you spent 24 hours talking to someone and tell me you won’t find bonds of connection with them.
Nancy connect them because they were outcasts but once the girls start stripping away the things that essentially made them outcast from their peer group and took away those threats Nancy no longer had a peel. For Nancy who started out with nothing (poor/Bad home life) and was already in a situation where she was the lesser within a group (school/Society in general) to then create your own group and then slowly watch as your power over that group starts to dissipate had to be incredibly terrifying to her, which would’ve made her react exactly how she did in the movie. The only difference is we only saw the first act of suspicion and spite on Nancy’s part.
If Nancy had succeeded and the girls had killed Sarah, she would undoubtably have turned on another one of them and my guess would have been Bonnie. When it comes to Bonnie and Rochelle; Rochelle‘s thing can never change. There’s always going to be racism, there’s always going to be racist, and so she’s always going to have to deal with it, so she’s always going to to some extent need her coven.
Bonnie however healed her scars and was now attractive. Her arrogance and ego was building, that would’ve bumped heads with Nancy’s arrogance and ego. They would’ve imploded and it wouldn’t have been a matter of if but when. Which would’ve left Rochelle and Nancy and that just do the personality probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer. I also imagine that there would have eventually been a conversation that I’ve seen before between poor white people and black people where parallels are being drawn between these two situations and it almost always offends black people.
Nancy may have loved these girls to some extent but ultimately they were a means to an emotionally selfish end and a coping mechanism that once she had power became expendable because of her own arrogance.
The eating issues definitely would have enhanced Rochelle’s storyline. It would have been very sensical for a lone black kid in a school.
It also would have been great to see the deleted scene where she interacts with her parents. The pressure to succeed in predominately white school, the swim team, combined with a eating disorder would have provided a lot of understanding of Rochelle's character and why somebody like her would gravitate toward the coven.
I wrote this already, but I would have prefer the kids being anti Semitic towards to rochelles character than racist (Rachel true is actually half Jewish, and rochelle’s last name is Jewish). It would have been interesting since it’s a catholic school, and she’s Jewish. Plus there’s the added layer to her dabbling in the Wicca religion

Rochelle wearing her natural hair was much appreciated by me growing up. There are only a few black girls on camera, even now, allowed to wear their hair out. Growing up as "the only black girl" at a predominately white school it would have been easy for her to be represented with relaxed hair or other straight styles.
Right- it was a different time and having the SAME hair as her- I started wearing mine natural too! :)

If you do a headcount of how many "black" characters are wearing their natural hair on tv and movies right now, the majority of those actresses are half white. That goes beyond just hair, but they do let mixed actresses and those with a certain hair type wear their natural hair in films/shows more so. Rachel True is just another example of this. She is mixed race with a looser curl pattern. Notice on the show Half and Half, Rachel True got to wear her natural hair, but her fully black co-star, Essence Atkins' hair was straightened. I think the media is more accepting of natural hair when the curl pattern is looser and when it's on the heads of mixed race actresses.

The craft is iconic. Its sad to see people often dismiss it as just a chick flick. It's actually a very dark movie.

about the rosary necklaces--- as someone who went to a Catholic school, we weren't allowed to wear them as jewelry. it's considered sacrilegious to wear a rosary as a fashion statement, so imo that adds to the witchy vibes with the catholic aesthetic
I also went to Catholic School. It makes me chuckle to see people in movies and TV wear rosaries as necklaces, since they're not used that way in religious households.

This movie is so iconic, and the costumes are so on point. Robin Tunney's wig was NEVER convincing to me, though the studio insisted that she wear it, since she'd shaved her head for "Empire Records."

For some reason it never clicked to me that Nancy switches the cheap PVC for a more durable, higher quality leather coat of a similar cut but I love that detail. Also a huge fan of her little matching set once they've come into the money & moved to a new place but my fave is Bonnie and the look you see when she whips off the big coat, with her white T-shirt, the thigh highs, the braid keeping her hair back. It's a moment!
I thought Neve Campbell had the perfect figure in the 90s. She even made sweaters and jeans look good in Scream.

The quote is only partially true - the late 90's-early 00's iteration of goth hasn't fully come about yet as a global fashion phenomena. It hits its stride with electronica/raver culture that was adopted by musical acts such as the Aphex Twins, Marilyn Manson, and post-*Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* Smashing Pumpkins, then was heavilly featured in The Matrix.

You kind of mentioned it with Rochelle, but forgot to mention how Bonnie's final outfit reflects how she has changed for the worse. She is wearing a long sleeved dress that hugs her body, but has it all buttoned up and covers her skin. She still has her insecurities, but she masks them with her new-found arrogance. It's as if she's saying "If I'm going to be a mess, at least I can look great while at it".
Also, notice how Fairuza's character hairstyle kept getting messier and messier as she becomes powerful? Ultimate cult classic chic!!! No pun intended
This movie is so good. I'd love a long breakdown of what's considered a "Witchy Look", and how classic witch imagery has turned into modern fashion for Witch characters (The Craft, AHS Coven, Practical Magic) and what garments feature (pointed toe boots, wide brim hats, etc) But perhaps this would take too long.

Idk if this is what the writers intended but when the character that bullies Rochelle looses her hair, it was such a pivotal moment becuz the girl attacked Rochelle's hair calling it nappy as many black women are ridiculed for. Like the other person who replied, I was also gonna say maybe start small, like with jewelry and makeup changes. You can do so much with just eyeliner, if you wear makeup. Just doing your brows or liner differently can change your whole face towards the look you're going for. Maybe then try different skirts and coats/cardigans and shoes. I just think why not try it, trying new styles is so fun and what's the worst that can happen? You end up with some more clothes you can just incorporate into other outfits? Cheers :)
The outfit Nancy wears when the girls come to her new apartment has stuck with me since I first saw the film. It’s simple but I’m a sucker for a two piece set. Particularly the pants. I’m also so thankful they rewrote Rochelle’s character to be black but they definitely could’ve given her more to work with.

The only Black witch character in media that hasn’t been done dirty is Marie Laveau from AHS: Coven. She was a badass and selfish yet strong character that didn’t take shit from anyone, even the supreme Witch Fiona. Aside from her, all the other Black witches in fiction are portrayed as practically subservient to a white lead.

I always have mixed feelings about Rochelle’s story. The bully wouldn’t stop and after her bully started experiencing consequences, they are informed they can’t undo the spells. They have to run their course. Maybe racist bullies are meant to be bald 🤷🏽♀️ Was she supposed to continue being terrorized by a racist? Idk I just understand her dilemma.
i really feel like they could have given her an actual story. as a black woman, racism isn't really a story or a development. black people do other things during the day, where they dont worry about what racists are going to do to harm them. she deserved a real background
It was because that no matter what justifications they used for getting revenge with Magic, it would come back on them. Chris was as much of a bully too. But because Sarah and Rochelle are actually good people deep down they feel bad about hurting another human being in a way their bullies couldn't.

Her bullying is that she is a middle class girl no different than anyone else yet she's still considered as "not belonging" because she's black. I think at the time there were a lot of issues with that. Beverly Hills 90210 did an episode on that too.

Also refers to Manon. Nancy's allusion: "If God and the Devil were playing football, Manon is the stadium." For those who believed in Manon, magic is both black and white, but it's up to the witch on which path they want to take.
Also Sarah was dressed very much like Lyrio ( magic shop lady) at the beginning when the girls visit the magic shop Lyrio was wearing a grey/ off white dress. Also Lyrio tells Sarah that magic is neither fully black or white. It depends on the intention of the witch. Plus by the end Sarah have Manon on her side

It's her eyes, they're unmistakable! She was adorable in RtO, it's was one of my faves growing up. Having been used to darker and weirder films I had no idea there was a controversy surrounding it for being "too dark" for a kids movie. I mean Mombi was terrifying and the Wheelers are scary, but that's what makes it fun.

Why is it interesting, relevant and progressive scenes so often get cut?
Nancy confronting the group, in a short period of time offered us backstories, highlighted a power struggle, showed that she care and felt underappreciated.
As a teen in the 90s myself, we did not know pvc was associated with sex work. It was in all the stores and people bought it. I had a pvc purse that was plum colored.
Rochelle was always my fav. I thought she was funny, beautiful and I loved how she sported her hair at a time not everyone was doing that. I like how the actress still sported a boho-esque style in her later projects, too.
That's a really good point I never see people mention... The dynamics of the characters and the friendships were very interesting to me, especially for the 90s, the whole toxic friendship thing wasn't as prevalent as it's exposure to it, is now.
Yes? But actually no. Heathers came out before this; characters in these 80s-90s movies were essentially their own subgenre. The characters were always the protagonist, the leader, the follower, and the odd girl out. I love this subgenre but it definitely has a basis.

I just think that the whole "toxic friends" trope was as prevalent, or rather, it's not "fake friends" (like in Heathers), from the get-go, it's a genuine friendship, even if shrowded by Nancy's jealousy (which also goes into the point of "dynamics" and doing that differently). Even in Mean Girls in the 2000s, they did the whole "Faux friends" thing which is odd because you'd assume the progression would be earlier, but with this, it was a progression of power and jealousy as said in the video, and they're treated as nuanced characters (less so with certain aspects, but the dynamic).
I think people will seek connections even if it is not in their best interest to do so. Each girl had their own motivations for joining the coven, but I think Sarah was honestly looking for friends and maybe by understanding magic more, rekindling her connection with her mother.

Keeping within the witchy theme an style analysis of the OG Charmed would be amazing. The series was such a time capsule of early 90’s/2000’s fashions. Each sister was so unique, and they also covered almost every era of fashion throughout the series. So there would be a lot to talk about.

Spot on analysis, as always! I love how each witch corresponds to a certain element, as per their main power. Sarah is Earth, since she's the most grounded and realistic, Air suits Nancy, since she's the most wild and unpredictable, Bonnie is Fire, since she's compassionate, at least initially, and was burned by fire, and Rochelle is Water, since she simply goes with the flow, and is more gentle and accepting than the other girls.

Isn't Nancy Air and Bonnie Fire in the movie though? I thought Nancy being Air was a nice contrast to Sarah who is Earth. Sarah who remained grounded as opposed to Nancy who got swept away.

Black actresses are always slighted in witch movies or tv series. Take Bonnie from The Vampire Diaries. She was treated terribly in the script despite having the biggest potential for more. Nina Dobrev who couldn’t keep it professional and continue after her breakup with Ian Somerhalder got a better ending when she finally returned than Kat Graham who stayed and carried the show.
You’re 100% right, and I don’t say this to detract from your point, but Nina Dobrev didn’t leave cause of Ian Somerhalder, she finished her contract and she didn’t want to renew it.
I can totally believe this because by season 6 the show was on the rails, and she was the only one that had some star power cause she was a lead so she took advantage of it.
But I’m glad that Kat Graham got a ton of success after the show. She’s got the Netflix movies, all eyes on me; the philanthropy, etc. she’s only going up
I agree with your point about Bonnie from TVD it’s so noticeable after rewatching the series and seeing her vogue get ready with me she was forced to wear wigs all the time. But I do agree with the other commenter I don’t think Nina Dobrev is to blame for the industry/ writers and or stylists mistakes with Kat. Her (Nina) contract was up and she had ever right to leave, but Kat deserved/ deserves better treatment by the entertainment industry for sure 🥺

Marie Laveau from AHS was an amazing character that was powerful and victorious. That may have to do with her being played by Angela Bassett though since the other Black witches like Queenie were written terribly.

Back in the 90s mixed people were not really allowed to be mixed. It was still very Jim Crowe. If you were white blended with any other ethnicity, you were supposed to be 100% the non-white ethnicity. Based on the idea that white had to be “pure“.

I didn’t know the extent of what Rachel went through and is still going through :( her not getting to present at the awards show not and not getting invited to the conventions with the rest of them is unacceptable, I’m not sure what her castmates have said on this but if it were me I would insist she be included and not attend things she wasn’t invited to, that’s so messed up

I disagree with the costume designer that said Goth wasn't a thing. Goth has been a subculture since the 80s. It just wasn't as popular in America as it became later on.

I was a teenager when the craft came out and goth was a big thing at the time. I remember the craft coming out and suddenly more girls who never even wore black were dressing like Nancy.
This was one of the movies that had a huge influence on culture at the time. Girls I knew who never had any interest in witch craft were suddenly high level witches, and we're buying up books on spells at Walden's bookstore.
Nancy's PVC coat was life changing to me - I've always loved her style.
As a child the craft aesthethic was my EVERYTHING! Specially Rochelle's outfits. And I never noticed Sarah's wig (except for the blonde one) now I can't unsee it.

I really wish they would have done a re-release to theatre’s with all the cut scenes included. A “Directors Cut”. I know they would have made more money than the original theatrical release. They would have had all us old fogey Gen X’ers in there but also the new kids. Dang… it was a missed opportunity that could have been epic.

It would have been a great benefit to have looked more in depth in to the goth subculture to understand how Nancy was dressing. The comment included about Goth not existing before the Craft included is just not accurate. And many of the styling is not just witch styling. However, loved the video it was really well analysed. :P

Exactly. Plus, goth fashion is as diverse as its music. There is no such thing asa definitive goth like. Since goth fashion is all about DIY, it's supposed to look unique and different, but many people seem to be missing the point of goth fashion. Besides, goth is a music- based subculture. Goth is all about the music, and darkness, and the fashion should reflect that.

Nancy's look was my aesthetic when this film came out (I was 24 then and it still is my aesthetic) but I loved all of the looks in this, honestly. I had done the rosary-as-fashion as a teen, and I was pretty stoked to see this as a thing on screen. However: TIL that was a wig on Robin! I always thought her hairline looked a little odd, but it never occurred to me that she was bewigged. One of my longtime fave films, kind of a comfort movie tbh.

They said goth wasn't really a thing yet in the same sentence that they mentioned The Cure...? 🥴 Please, thay had Nancy wearing an Eternal Love dress. Wearing as many rosary beads at once as possible was a 90s goth staple, especially with the spiked collar.
I love Bonnie's layering in the bus scene. Nothing screams the 90s more than that style.
I freaking LOVE Epire Records!! I do have to agree, though, that the wig was a good idea. I'm sure Robin looked adorable with pixie hair but long hair kinda softened her look which was appropriate for her character
I don't have a favorite, but I do like how they subverted the role of each character's elements. Usually, air is usually associated with goodness, so I liked that Nancy was associated with that
I’m 27 & one of the main reasons I miss high school was having the opportunity every day to experiment with my style choices & try out looks I was inspired by from films or editorials. I LOVED it. I also loved the compliments I would get ahahah didn’t get enough attention at home lolll

The Craft, Charmed and Sabrina are three of my favorite things from the 90's. As a 90's kid I enjoyed all the scary things.
Regarding continuity errors, the most glaring one in my opinion was the beach scene with the beached marine life.
Nancy runs up to the first shark(?), but in the wide shot before that scene there is a completely different species in that same spot.
Regardless, it was still a great movie!
to me the movie went bad when Nancy walks off the water and says to "Maneau"? You're inside of me now....it was quite badly acted. Apart from that scene it was a fun movie.

I always loved Nancy, not only was she such a huge style icon to me growing up and still is but I loved her character and felt bad for her in the end. Part of me wishes there could have been a happy ending where they could all be friends and a coven.
i love that costume designer mentality: "nancy is poor so her zillions of outfits, some of them are mad of slightly cheaper material." i had no idea this character was supposed to be poor until today.
There was a scene where we got to see Nancy's home life, it's a pretty low income house. But other than that yeah the costume department didn't really do a good job a showing that Nancy is poor. For starters, Alternative Clothing is very expensive and I have known a few people who wear Alternative Clothing and are poor. They usually just wear the same t-shirts, jacket, pants, and shoes everyday; and don't have a new wardrobe every day. Maybe Nacy steals her clothes like she did in the magic shop 🤷♀️ But another thing that doesn't make sense about Nancy is that how is she supposed to be so poor that she steal stuff, but yet she still able to to go to a Catholic School. I've never been to a Catholic School but I've heard that they're expensive to enroll in. I feel like it would have made more sense if the coven attended a Public High School as opposed to a Catholic School, because that would have made more sense for Nancy's character.

A lot of poor people have (and had even back then) a lot of clothes. It's not the amount! You can have a lot of trash, it's still cheap trash, but if you know how to style it, anything looks good.
As for the school, she maybe got a scholarship to go, or they had a "help the poor" program. Personally I'd say her dad pays for it. We never see him (just the step dad) so have no way of knowing, but it could be that in the divorce they settled that as childsupport he pays for the school. I mean, I know it feels like it "doesn't fit", but it's also very realistic. I'm also wondering about the step-dad like what did he do to have such a big life insurance? You don't get one of those if you're piss poor, so either he was wealthier at some point or had a secure job, so there was money somewhere.
I wish Rochelle and Rachel True got more respect from the fans and Hollywood she is such an amazing person. I wonder why her castmates never spoke up about her mistreatment and erasure though? Like wouldn't you have become friends or at least cordial while on set enough to see how uncomfortable and left out she was?

I have a love-hate relationship with this movie. To me, Sarah was the blandest character, but got to be the hero. I related to Bonnie and Rochelle they most. They had so much potential but were portrayed as shallow and cowardly with no redemption at the end. I completely understand Nancy's descent into power-hungry madness, but the overall ending just felt so hollow to me. I walked away feeling like all of it was for nothing. The preppy girl wins, the shy girl and the black girl are back to being social outcasts, the scary goth girl was trouble all along...the status quo is just reinstated. I think I can rewatch this movie if I just stop at the part where they do the ritual on the beach, lol.

Rochelle is literally the best character of the group, she’s so sweet. I don’t understand why she’s so underrated.
Another thing that should be of note, Sarah is the only redhead of the group and is considered the "natural" witch. Red hair often symbolises having strong magical affinity or a stronger connection to the occult.
Also, you could parallel it to Nancy's red but almost black hair...black magic and all that?
I love how they used colors to depict the witch that still has her powers, aka the good with is the the deadliest and most powerful of them all. Sarah is rarely dressed in all black, which in Santeria/Palo/Vodun/Lucumi/IFa black is the color that absorbs evil and demonic spirits, which is why from the start you already know who is the bad witch, Nancy. The fact Sarah didn't just got her powers, she inherited, which again in many African belief systems is true and with generation getting more powerful than the last due to adding to the craft/practices from previous generations. The whole "The water is never far from the source/ its origins." is true. Sarah is shown wearing all white (or in her case silver a reflective color similar to white or very pale black), which in the African beliefs it is the color that reflects and defects evil and with time signifies the top hierarchy of many religions (in Sarahs' case would be Santera in Santeria, Iyalawo in Ifa, Lucumi and Palo, Mambo in Vodun). This movie is so underrated at how much it takes from other religions and not just simply European Peganism and Wiccan witchcraft and beliefs. It also teaches not to mess with forces that you don't fully understand or have the bloodlines dealing with.
BTW, Goth has always been around since 1970s. Please do more research... stupid producers and directors!!! 🙃

When I first watched this movie i was absolutely terrified of Nancy downs her portrayal of this sad and broken character turning into the monster she never wanted to be was absolutely terrifying all down to he facial expressions and the way she held herself on screen.
Sometimes I amaze myself at the amount of iconic movies that I've never seen. Definitely adding The Craft to my list of spooky movies to watch this month. And paying super close attention to their outfits.

The craft was popular amongst my coven back in the day. I even had a leather jacket similar to Nancy's.
I remember watching this as a teen learning about witchcraft, etc. I didn't realize at the time "the right way" comment was meant as "she considered" suicide, I for some reason thought it was a weird reference to a witchy ritual or something.
When it comes to "The Craft", I think everyone has a favorite. But to be honest, I always looked at the girls as "Eternal Sisters", and I found it hard to pick just one as a favorite. And if I had to do a sequel to this movie, I would explore that bond between them. Especially when Nancy is returns to the modern world. Just because Bonnie, Rochelle, and Nancy are limited to their powers that wouldn't mean they still wouldn't be linked to Sarah. And I wished they would have done that in "Legacy" to show this because regardless, they're still witches, that bond never dies.

I love your line in the end about how Sarah is dressing for a brighter future- you can see a little glimpse of an Express shopping bag as if to underscore that point. We see her at the start of the movie in disheveled clothes that are probably well-worn in, and at the end we see her in a pretty new dress that emphasizes that Sarah is now looking towards the future as seen by her recent shopping spree.
Nancy’s matching pants/crop top outfit in her new apartment is def my fav. Would love to wear it if I could find it.
