    THINGS I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO:
    - Instead of cutting pour spouts and vents into the silicone, you can form them during the clay bed part. In the past I have used golf tees, dowels, Sharpie marker caps, toothpicks (for air vents), Lego pieces, and more. You simply embed these halfway into the clay the same as you would the figure, and leave them in while pouring the silicone. Once removed, you will have CLEAN-looking pour spouts and vents.
    - When pouring up thick viscosity materials like silicone, I prefer to pour into two open mold halves, then quickly slap them together, because forcing the silicone down through a narrow pour spout takes longer and is subject to more bubbles. Pouring the halves open like this allows you to run a toothpick or similar around the molds, eliminating surface bubbles.
    Steady Craftin videos are made with the help of DIRECT SUPPORT:

      When I first played the game I looked at my lady & said, "These lil guys kinda remind me of TheCrafsman's Free Range Chicken." And she was like, "Now I'm just gonna think they're chickens under those space suits." Also CrafSon knocked it out of the park on the sculpt. The proportions and profile are spot on.

    If you want to make a mold without any bubbles on the subject, I find that if you take a paintbrush and brush mold material all over the surface first, there's never any bubbles. It also guarantees the material gets into all of the crevices. Then pour normally after that.

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Very good idea! I probably need to do that instead of rubbing my finger down in the mold. LOL! But for open molds like this, it's a surefire way to eliminate surface bubbles.

    Crafsman: The mica powder brushed onto the mold may rub off and get everywhere after handling the finished piece. To prevent this, you can coat the metallic mica visor with something called Psycho Paint after demolding. It's glossy, clear, won't affect the color, and is super easy to apply!

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It has held up pretty well. I've found that if you make it too clumpy, that outer bit of mica can indeed rub off. I got some Psycho Paint years ago for painting color onto stop-motion puppets, but have never considered using it as a coating! Fabulous idea! Thank you!

  • @verdantpulse5185
    @verdantpulse5185 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For smoother sprues without nicks that slash into the mold body:
    Take a long skinny scalpel blade, heat it in a flame and bend it sideways into a u-shape when it glows. It forms a kind of 'crooked knife', kind of like a gouge with the handle turned ninety degrees. Use the U to cut smooth bottomed ribbons of rubber out of the way. Gets dull quickly, but blades are cheap.

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Glad to read this! :D There are other techniques as well, apart from mica powders. You can even pour a solid color into a separate cavity (like the visor spot), let cure, and pour the rest of the figure. The parts will stick together very well and be a solid unit. (You can do this with resin, but try to time it where the first part isn't 100% cured, so you get that thermal fusion going.) :)

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@tonilarimore6079 It actually sticks to the mold fairly well. If there are any caked up parts, that may sorta fall down if the mold is bumped a lot during the pour. But in my experience, an even layer clings to the silicone well.

    Hey Crafsman, you know you could do the bed of the figure using hot wax ? instead of using expensive putty, melting down some used candles and using that as a bed for every figure is nice as you get a nice flat line all arround your model. Plus if you want to soothe it you can by heating a little bit your tools.
    Wax can be reused and is easy to release. The only problem I have with wax is that you can't use plastilin models as it would melt down.

    Do you have any videos on how to put on the eyes on silicone puppet? like eyeball beads?

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! I've done some things that could be used for making eyes in silicone puppets. For example, the ball-and-socket joints video (formed the socket with an existing ball object) and the video about casting eyes in-place. Although it was rigid resin, you could use some type of set-in-place objects to form the sockets while the silicone is curing. For example: You know how stop-motion puppet eyes usually have a dark pupil, and a hole within that, which you use with a small pin/needle to rotate and pose the eyes? Well, imagine you have your pair of eyes with needles/pegs sticking out the front pupil holes, and you use the needles/pegs to position the eyes exactly into the mold, where they will go in the puppet, and THEN pour your silicone. This will give you set-in-place eyes that will be able to rotate within their sockets.
      This is just one way off the top of my head - there are other ways to go about it. Hope it helps!

    Hey Crafsman, love the videos! Thanks for being here! I do have a question. If I wanted to make a mold with some small tokens, in order to make a bunch of those small tokens, how would you go about that? Any suggestions?

    Hi crafsman! I'm learning so much from your videos and did my first sculpt, mold, resin cast and it was successful!! I'm curious as to why you are choosing a two piece mold for this sculpt, as opposed to a one piece cut mold? Wouldn't a one piece be quicker?
    Thanks for all of your amazing content!

    Great video! I will try to do this when I'll have the time, but I do have question. Did you make the prototype of the figurine in the same way you did the chicken prototype? I would really like to know! Keep on going with the great videos!

    Another brilliant video, Mr Crafsman (and, of course, Crafson!) And good to see you reusing old molds to bulk out new ones - I've saved a fortune on silicone doing that, and saving all the excess silicone that sets in the mixing pot, cutting it up and reusing it just the same. I've even ground some old silicone up using one of those hand-cranked meat-grinders - mixes in with new stuff just fine, but makes it much more rigid and less flexible than the new silicone would be alone.
    The dishsoap-and-IPA is a new one for me, so gonna be givin' it a go. Until now I've just been using petroleum jelly - and then running a hairdryer over it to melt it and get it flowin' and not leaving any brushstrokes.
    Keep well y'all. x

    Hey Crafsman, you can put a couple lengths of dowel into your sculpting medium before making the mold and avoid all that mess of cutting vents into it. It also makes the mold look a little nicer for if you ever want to make duplicate molds.

      @@TheCrafsMan Sir, Your collection would really be appreciated by those of us that are in the car on long drives or just need a back drop of sound for different things that are going on during the day. I could see your music being even bigger than your Crafs stuff as it really is kind of what I'm here for. I enjoy the videos for sure, I really do; but I'm not a crafter. I think this just speaks volumes to your musics wide appeal and well to your overall appeal.
      Nonetheless, as always, I'm proud and honored that you'd take time out to reply. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Trae McCombs (S1cnus on reddit)

    Also I ordered my first mica powder pigments for resin this weekend! I'll be using them in UV resin and two-part epoxy resin for various projects, so it's good to know about adding it to one half of the epoxy stuff instead of both.
