    Your reviews feel right at home man. Does not have much annoying eye-candy animations nor voice modifications and just go straight to the point. Whenever i want to watch a review for a prospective gadget i always look up if you have an existing review video first. Keep it up!

    6 hours of battery life and an onboard NIC? Sign me up! This is the ideal device for when I need to take a trip to a data center for a few hours to work on servers, routers, or switches. Most data centers offer keyboards, mice, and monitors for their clients so I can easily turn this into a full PC experience without needing anything except a power and network cable for those times a "quick trip" turns into a 2+ hour troubleshooting session.

    This is pretty cool, really nice for people doing stuff in rougher jobs. Makes sense that the screen is non-touch and that the fan can be stopped. You'd likely get a lot of dust and whatnot screwing things up otherwise.

    Hey Lon, do you know if your unit came updated to 10W TDP? As it seems like it came at 7W TDP. Just wondering. What is clear is that 10W TDP + 6gb of ram instead of 7W&4gb of ram would had made the GPD Micro to top all your tests if it indeed came configured at just 7W.

    • @fdmillion
      @fdmillion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They also increased the price slightly. If you backed it at $299 you have to pledge another $10 (they're saying either pledge another $10 or request refund - no option to stick with $299 and get a 4GB one). If you didn't, the $299 is now $314 ($15 more).
      Can't wait for mine though. I can see myself not needing a traditional laptop in many situations if I have the Micro.

      "I miss the sub notebooks from the 90s. Wish they made something like those today." You mean like all the products GPD currently makes? Like the Pocket and Pocket 2 (think slim/pocketable, 7" touchscreen, no gamepads, big keyboard), the Win and Win 2 (smaller keyboard, added gamepads, etc), and then this MicroPC, which has IT-focused connectivity features? And that's just the stuff that has Intel x64 CPUs. It doesn't cover their android gaming handhelds.

    Things like this they should have the webcam/mic removable, like it is on it's own USB stick, and can be unplugged and removed from the screen bezel or maybe even flipped around stuck back in where you can see the USB so you know it isn't plugged in. I know why they did it, it is for security reasons. I have a few friends that do IT for government and they need to unplug the built-in webcam/mic from their screen and physically remove it from the bezel. I started just unplugging it and leaving it in, not really for security but just so when I have an external mic it will default to that rather than the mic attached to the built-in webcam. Nothing more annoying that recording something and then go to edit and realize all the audio sucks because it was through the crappy webcam mic.

    As someone in the IT field, I like everything about this little device except the price. It's really hard to justify when I could just grab a Surface Go if I needed a computer on the road. Plus the surface has the added functionality of being a usable tablet. If they can get the price down quite a bit on these things, they could be a real winner.

    • @AvatarEquis
      @AvatarEquis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Highly unlikely to happen. As its actual retail price will be $399 as will now come with 6gb of ram and with the CPU configured at 10W by default. And they may only be able to make 5000 to 10,000 of these from what they have implied in emails and forums.

    • @antoniorsoftware
      @antoniorsoftware 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But Surface GO is more expensive, with just 64GB of storage on the base model and you need to buy the keyboard separately and dongles/hubs if you want Ethernet/RS232 and you only get Windows 10 Home. So you are complaining about a 300$ MicroPC, while the equivalent Surface GO would be over 500$. You can now also upgrade the MicroPC to 6 GB of RAM for 15$.

    • @richarddcrossley
      @richarddcrossley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just said the same! I bought base model surface go and actually love the thing! Especially now have Ubuntu terminal in windows 10.

    • @richarddcrossley
      @richarddcrossley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @mikeo009
      @mikeo009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      AntonioR Software
      Surface Go can be had for a lot cheaper, especially at the corporate level, and you're comparing the pre-order price, retail will be $400. Microsoft hardware support is also heaps better than most PC manufacturers out there that I've experienced. I could get things done with either device, but at the end of the day, the Surface Go is going to be a lot more useful as a general use device than this little mini pc. If this thing were $200, then I'd completely change my tune, because at that price I'd almost consider it a very flexible purpose-built tool rather than a fully fledged computer. A $200 tool is fine to sit on the shelf when not in use, but if I'm paying $400+, then the thing better be a lot more useful.

Only thing is the battery is missing, and it only has 112MB RAM (the upgrades were proprietary and I've only ever seen one on eBay, for something like $200 for a 128MB upgrade.) You obviously can't do much on it, but I suppose it can take pictures and play music...
      Sony also made a similar product later: the Lifestyle P series. Same 21:9 aspect ratio display but with 2009 era netbook hardware (Atom processor, SSD option, 2GB RAM, etc.) and thinner. I have a P series too that I got from eBay a while back, I actually have it running win10 (albeit slowly).

    It sure looks like a mixed bag coming from an old GPD Pocket user... On one hand, the lack of a touchscreen and using this trackpad instead of the nub makes me cringe: even on my large laptop with a large trackpad I prefer to use the touchscreen because it's that much more convenient. The resolution seems lower than the first GPD as well, which is a bummer. The keyboard looks more awkward than the GPD's and I really wished the review would address the way it feels... On the other hand, the backlit keyboard, all that I/O and probably the performance vs. the first GPD Pocket are the good things about it and something I actually miss...

      "like this" as in.. this small? Anything super-miniature will not be cheaper than this. If you mean "like this" as in a basic Windows laptop that's larger than this, they are readily available.

    I just bought one from a Facebook ad for $26.98, probably an overstock sale. I used PayPal so if it was a scam I’ll get my money back. But I should get it in two weeks.

      @@GallowglassBLADE Before I even received anything I reported them and told PayPal and my CC company about the scam so I got my money back. They sent me a cheap corded mouse 😂😂 What they do is use a third party to ship out the item and apparently the third party is convinced I ordered a mouse. 😂 Never making that mistake again.

      Anything that you might need a very small but capable Windows 10 PC to do. This particular variant is well-suited for people who need to regularly work with IT and industrial equipment that uses RJ45 and RS-232 connections, in a modern system that is also extremely portable.

    Ubuntu Mate = Muh-teh, not Mayt. That desktop isn't your Anglophile drinking buddy but named after Mate Yerba, an Amazonian herbal infusion drink, by its Argentinian, Spanish speaking developers.
    Glad to be of service. ;)
