I got a mini laptop a few years ago and there's really something weirdly satisfying about having something tiny that runs full windows and being able to use a keyboard with it.

One important feature about this device is that the screen is landscape native. Unlike other devices like the aya neo for example, where the screen is actually portrait, forced into landscape which causes all sort of resolution issues with many games. But on this device (2024 version) thats not an issue :)

Brings me joy to see a reviewer who gets the concept of this handheld! I've got my own (2023 model) and love it, especially how it sits in my tiny hands and how much power I've got in my pocket. I definitely appreciate you throwing in that it's not a good choice for most people, though, because anyone who doesn't like clamshells, needs a bigger screen, or has a reasonable budget will have a bad time with this one. Great video as always!

Then in motion assistant set up some keyboard shortcuts for some TDP presets, and ones for + and - 1 TDP. I have it boot straight to windows when it turns on, and go to steam big screen by default. I have it set to shut down when you hit power and go to sleep when you close the lid. I installed just the right grip so it’s easy to hold but still fits in the tiny case, and bought a super slim charger and magnetic attach cable. It works like a freaking DREAM!

kinda wish the sticks were on the inside rather than the outside. Especially since X and A are usually the main contextual buttons since on a normal controller they're closer to the stick. With this layout you have to stretch further to do the actions that are meant to be quick. Nevermind the fact you've got to get passed your own muscle memory to go left instead of right.

You dont need the app open. Click the windows Audio icon in the bottom right hand corner next to the clock to turn on / off DTS-X. Spacial audio off disables it. DTS-X only works for games running at a higher TDP like 10w and higher. Don't use DTS for lower wattages or you'll get sound clipping.

So the reason why it's called Motion Assistant is because the app was originally for setting up gyro controls on GPD devices. Over time they just kinda piled on more and more functionality on it, resulting in a monstrosity of an app.

This or the GPD WinMax 2 Pretty much ALMOST cover it. I have found NOTHING better. What else would I add? a Built in TV TUner (ATSC) and an FM/AM radio tuner built in....and this might be a stretch and too much to ask but...a built in SDR (Software Defined Radio hardware) or built in Amateur/HAM/GMRS Radio. They give me anxiety to look at, but you seemed to play with them fine. They are completely inverted to the Steam Deck layout, which I have gotten pretty used to, I think that layout makes more sense. I can totally see the appeal in this device, and they have came quite far since their previous models. I like the portability of it, the fact you can close it and easily store it, even without a case if you needed to.

Makes me wonder what SOC the ROG Ally X will come with. The 7 8840u is not really that much of a jump from last gen, so ASUS shouldn't ask way too much in terms of pricing.

      @TechDweeb  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

It'll be the Z1 extreme. The only upgrades on the X will be the battery, ram speed (should be a little better performance) and ram capacity, and some minor form factor and controls changes.

something important to remember is that gpd limit's the battery to 95% so you can use it as a desktop pc constantly desktop

I think this thing is so cool, especially with the right use case. If this had existed for my deployments to Afghanistan, it would have been perfect. May be great for people who travel a lot, military, even college students!

That's a device which is to be added to the list of portable Win console. And PC. It's not for everyone, like you said, but it offers a wide range of other tools than Win consoles don't have...

The best thing about PCs like that now, is you can always just plug it into your TV, plug in a controller, and use it like a game console. I personally prefer the GPD Win 4. The mini is specifically a hybrid. It kind of depends what you want.

or better yet, plug it into an eGPU then have it output to a TV/monitor and you have yourself a powerful gaming PC when docked

You can get more battery, im averaging about 3.5 to 4 hours. Set your TDP to 9, thats where the device is lowest but still stable in most games. Turn your battery saver option in Windows power setting on (most important, outside of tdp manipulation). Turn your backlight to 20%, thats the sweetspot for saving power but still being able to see. Set your resolution in windows to 720p. If your playing anything outside of steam. Exit out of steam as that also consumes power in the background.
For further powersaving you can also manipulate the priority of programs running in your devices background.
I now get almost 4 hours of playtime, which is incredible. Im on a GPD Win 4, 7640u.

@cheeeeezewizzz if that were true I'd be able to get last years gpd win 4 for 500 right now, but unfortunately they don't really sell enough of these for their value to go down that much.

OQO and Sony (Sony UX) were the first companies to put full Windows OS in a small handheld factor, they set the standards for these devices back in the 2000s but didn't catch on until GPD Win 1 in 2015, GPD was the company that brought it back and reimagined and improved on that concept, the actual name for these small computers is called a UMPC, or Ultra Mobile PC.
People were all raving about how revolutionary the Steam Deck are, but those people don't know that UMPC had existed for a very long time, and Valve and the major PC brands doesn't understand this concept as well as GPD does.
