100%
Still needs one now lol
he does. he's already great. but he would be so much better.
The prototypical black response to psychology.
Being dismissive of it, then immediately saying he's going to become one is truly insane. If Shaq weren't one of the biggest dude's to ever live someone would've checked him a long time ago.
Shaq basically saying that the reason he was bad at free throws is because god needed to nerf him in game. That’s crazy.
As great as Shaq is, the dude is full of himself and he's been full of himself his entire life. The dude just didn't have the kinesthetic feel for shooting that natural shooters do. The God holding him back excuse is just a lame attempt to keep his ego from being truly humbled.
It’s true
@@rsoxboyur a hater lol
@@aleniafuvaiI don’t think he’s hating. I love Shaq. He’s my second fav player of all time behind Bird. But I agree with this guy’s comment. His ego won’t let him say or accept certain things.
Makes one wonder if he has even one close friend or has his ego blocked out that part of life too? and he wants to be a psychologist? Now I've lost all respect for the guy.
"You ever go see a sports therapist?"
"I don't need a sports therapist, I'm getting my degree to be one."
Shaq would be a horrible therapist with that kind of attitude. 😂
I dont know, it seems like he did indeed need a sports psychologist
That's Shaq being Shaq. Motivation was always an issue for him. He always showed up to training camp out of shape and played himself into shape in LA. It's one of the things that he and Kobe argued about. Just imagine Kobe's brain in Shaq's body.......The GOAT conversation gets flipped upside down.
@@Davivd2wasn’t that on Phil’s instruction tho?
Straight up. There is a point where its a mental health issue.
@@leandros7662 That's on Phil telling him it's OK because he knows that if he doesn't that Shaq will be butt hurt and Phil could have his job on the line if Shaq went to management and complained about it. Trust me, there is no dimension of reality where Phil Jackson was thinking to himself: " I don't want Shaq working out and staying in the off season. The leader of the team slacking off while everyone else has to come to camp in shape is good for team morale."
At the time there wasn’t really many, you didn’t hear about them back then tbh in any sport
“ I’ve been humbled….. but also imagine I was even better than I already am , just keep thinking about me” very humble , so much humble
He opened the pod by demanding JJ say he's the greatest lol
He the goat
He's being self deprecating there. He's acknowledging how arrogant he can be as he is, but just imagine how much worse he would be if he shot 80% + from the line.
Well he ain't lying tho. Imagine if Shaq shot like 80% at the line?
What would the opposing defense do? How many more points would he have scored? list goes on
when didn't he speak the truth exactly?
Come on man you surely know that’s self deprication
Shaqs college free throw form looked excellent. His form turned crazy over time. All the talk shows, late night shows, comedians etc would joke about his free throws. All mental.
I put more of that on his weight tbh. He was lean back in college and in his first few years in the league. As he developed, he put on alot of mass to be more dominant, but it changed his mechanics also. Giannis is another example of this. He used to have a very nice form in his rookie season, but the muscle he put on altered his motion.
@@Infinityflow0 bro weight has nothing to do with shooting. If anything it makes you better cause you have more mass to make more force to shoot further out. It is about mechanics not weight
@@AVanManThats not really true. If that was the case, we'd have a bunch of Embiids. Embiid is really one of the very very very few big guys that can shoot. 90% of them are bad at that like Shaq.
@@AVanMan look at yao.. taller and 90% FT shooter.. even took the teams technical foul shots..

"I don't need a sports psychologist; I am going to become one. Just let me take this axe into the woods..." Hahaha
Saying "I hit them when I need to hit them" is the biggest cop out
It is. But also mostly true.
It's a silly statement, period. They all count. If you are at the line with one second to go down by one, you would be ahead with cushion if you had gone 9-12 instead of 6-12 in the preceding 48 minutes.
@@richardhermida5246 Exactly. It funny when people complain about the end of the game when something dumb happens. It's like bruh, you had 47 other minutes to correct things so this moment didn't have to mean a thing.
Right? THEY ALL COUNT

He is a true boomer. He actually thinks these degrees mean something

His doctorate isn’t a real degree. It’s an “honorary “degree
@@Ivan-yq6ik why would you assume it’s honorary it’s not. he went back to LSU and put in the work to get his doctorate in education. it’s not hard to fact check that. "I'm no sensitive" I need to hear Chuck opinion on that 😅

Shaq: "How many degrees you got?"
His ego was the issue. It is a proven fact FT % would go up underhand (granny style) for guys with hands like this but this guy like so many couldn't bring himself to do it. His vanity exceeded his desire to improve and help the team. He isn't the only one. Thats the story you will never hear him tell.

@@tommyfu9271Nah that part I can buy. Pressure is a crazy thing. Pretty sure JJ is on record saying Ben Simmons is actually well above average when it comes to outside shooting + FT in practice but the pressure on the big stage of the NBA gets to him.
Even though Shaq is a top 10 player all time you can tell he is dissapointed with himself because he could of been even greater.

"Im not sensitive" 🤭
Shaq claiming in practice he was hitting them like Redick is absurd.
NBA level players usually are way greater than you see in game, curry once said he made about 30 straight 3s and I think was Ray Allen said he did about 70 free throw in practice
It's a pro athlete ego thing. Very few are willing to admit they suck. Look at his statement about making clutch ft's in the playoffs. He shot 50% over his career in the playoffs.
I don’t know about Reddick level, but I can attest most NBA players tend to shoot a way higher percentage in practice than they do in the games because there’s no pressure.
Might happen, ofc on lower level, but i was shooting 95%+ free throws in practice, in official games i was 77% free throw shooter, not as bad as some of these guys, but theres a reason only few of these guys are top top elite 90%+ free throw shooters. I think its reasonable to believe he could shoot 80-90% at home.
@@alarydavidninsteph made 105 straight
Getting hurt doing the Merton Hanks is pure comedy😂😂
Rick Barry called him, but his street degree got in the way. Same thing with Giannis now, they can go underhand and shoot 80+%.
Giannis a decent free throw shooter
@@Shortballa11 61.8% is not going to cut it in the playoffs.
They never needed to go underhanded style.
Shaq had a particularly nasty hitch in his shot mechanics. That was always his main issue.
@@synapse913 Bigger hitch, shaq's free throws or barkley's golf swing? 😆
@@sskmanentsa5326 didn’t he go 17-18 on the finals close out
"I made them when they mattered, in the Finals." You sure about that? He shot 36 of 93 (38.7%) in the 2000 Finals. 39 of 76 (51.3%) in the 2001 Finals. 14 of 48 (29.2%) in the 2006 Finals. The 2002 Finals was the only time he performed somewhat decently at the line, going 45 of 68 (66.2%). Of course, even though that's better than usual for him it's obviously still not good.
Yup. If he just hit them in the first place his team would have been up, and those "when they mattered" free throws wouldnt matter.
so the only counter/defense for shaq in this case is the question of how efficient was he from the line say from the 4th quarter or even in late crunch time... if you add up everything he went 134 of 285 (47%) but if hes shooting say 70% in the 4th quarter of games then thats his only saving grace... sidenote... i dont think he was lol... but again i dont know the crunch time numbers from him on the line
I'm sure according to him the actual ones he made were the ones he "needed to make".
nah shaq never hit free throws, even “when they mattered.” but he won 3 rings in a row with the lakers so it didn’t really affect success.
@@pcm2fchris who knows if hitting them at a higher rate couldnt have made that 4 or 5 in a row instead. It almost certainly did affect success
He did not hit them when it mattered. His career percentage was 52.7% and in the finals he was 48.4%. Dude was an absolute monster and one of the most dominant players of all time, but he was always trash at the line.
BMW sponsor is 🔥
Tommy Heinsohn once talked about why he thought Wilt Chamberlain was bad from the line. He said that he was too strong, and that he once saw Wilt make 20 out 25 from half court, but he was lucky if he could make half of his shots from 15 feet. It wouldn’t surprise me too much if the same was true for Shaq.
Lol. There's a zero percent chance Chamberlain hit 20 of 25 from halfcourt. He wouldn't hit 5 of 25. So ridiculous.
@@dy120481 He's on youtube hitting 4 three point shots shot hookshot style in a row.
@@dy120481 hhaha people love telling stories like this about older players that are transparently nonsense.
Listening to Shaq is gold.
When Shaq played for the Suns I went to a game where he shot like 6-10 from the line (it was the game where the random Irish guy on the team made like three three pointers in a row in garbage time). I left the game thinking even I could do better than that. The next day I inflated my basketball and went to the park to shoot 100 free throws. I made like 8 of them. Halfway through a bunch of middle school kids sat down and watched me from a park bench laughing to each other.
What? You inflated your basketball?🤣
@@Pepenthez yeah, I had to borrow the little needle for it from a neighbor
how can you possibly only go 8 for 100? this is incredible.
@@antoniomrubio wonder what else your using that needle for mate. Especially if you walk around with an in inflated basketball mate!
I think Shaq dad "Sarge" was a valuable piece to who he was and wish he was still around till his career ended. Shaq probably would've been better with that type of motivation. And I would love to hear stories from him about Shaq
Missed games not my fault - hurt on company time, heal on company time. Love this dude, especially because he just speaks his mind... or rather, whatever is in his mind at that time.
I asked perplexity ai:
While Shaq did have some notable performances from the free throw line in crucial situations, his overall free throw shooting percentage was consistently below average throughout his career.
According to a Reddit post, Shaq shot 52% on non-clutch free throws and 50.4% on clutch free throws, defined as those taken during a one-possession game in the 4th quarter, from 2000-2011
. This suggests that Shaq's free throw shooting was not significantly better in clutch situations.
Another source notes that Shaq's career free throw percentage in the NBA Finals was 48.4%, which is still below average.
3:50 the abdominal injury is hilarious yo😂
Yeah but remember Shaq also said he only practiced and rehabbed on company time. Still left alot of food on the plate.
Phil or at least how Shaq tells it, Phil Jackson would tell Shaq don't work out too hard during the off season just heal up and use the regular season to to get into basketball shape.
Jj has transformed into a top sports analyst 🔥💯
“Wasn’t his fault he got injured??” He did the Merton Hanks on his own!!!
Lol I love when Shaq clarifies at 1:33 "in the finals".
Shaq a real one fr.
Shaq would have been in the conversation with Lebron and Jordan if he stayed in shape and knew how to shoot
💯 I also believe his ego was his worst enemy.
@manumalia Ego can elevate you,but also limit your growth. At some point, you need to leave it behind.

Shaq: "im not Sensitive"

I remember not really complaining about shaqs free throw conversions as much as usual in the playoffs. That ‘06 finals run in particular comes to mind, but that could be overshadowed but wades ridiculous amount of FTs he took
"Yea, I'ma chop down a tree" 🤌
JJ about to be the Lakers Head Coach
Critics can argue about his fitness or free throws, but Shaq belongs in the GOAT conversation. 4 Chips, 3 FMVPs and 1 MVP. His peak has to count towards his legacy. His dominance is unrivaled.
He probably has 2 more chips if not for Kobe’s all time worst series performance in 2004 (up there with LeBron’s 2011) and Wade’s injury in 2005. It’s hypothetical, but goes to show his rule over the early 2000s (along with Duncan - kudos to him).
Shaq: I'm not sensitive
"When I missed games cuz I got injured that wasn't my fault."
"I was doing the Merton Hanks..."
Ayoo😂😂😂😂😂
One time, when asked about his free throw %, Shaq responded, "I can't have the good looks, rappin' ability, AND free throws. It wouldn't be fair." lol
"I'm gonna chop down a tree" 👏
It’s kinda simple
As hands get bigger
Ball smaller
Shooting a soccer ball is much harder to get it off the hand and get rotation
It’s what it is
JJ thought the street degree might be a real thing for a few seconds
The big man who will be humble enough to shoot free throws with granny form will be unstoppable
I love hearing Shaq get pissed about his all time points ranking and how he will feel when he drops out the top 10. It’s rare to hear that perspective
Yao Ming: I guess I just needed to stay healthier. But now I'm big and heavy like you, too.
Merton Hanks had the hottest touchdown celebration in his time. Can’t forget.
“No I don’t need a sport psychologist, but I’m about to become a sports psychologist.”
🧐🧐
I'd pay extra to hear the TNT crew talking in their "natural words" as Shaq does here.... Chuck and the man, here... it'd be exponentially better... and it's great now!
I couldn't find the 4th quarter stats from the 1995 finals so I had to exclude them but after looking at the 4th quarter of every finals game Shaq played:
In 26 games played he shot over 60% from the line in 5/26 4th quarters. Some of these quarters he didn't shoot any free throws so its really 5/19 (60% is a low bar anyway but we are talking about Shaq here).
In these 5 finals series he shot 161/340 from the line which is 47.35%, in the 4th quarters he shot 51/108 which is 47.2%. So he actually got worse at shooting free throws in the 4th.
These are the free throw tallies if you were curious:
Pacers 2000: (0-1 , 9-16 , 1-7 , 6-11 , 0-0 , 1-7)
76ers 2001: (1-6 , 0-0 , 0-0 , 0-0 , 3-6)
Nets 2002: (8-16 , 2-2 , 3-6 , 4-5)
Pistons 2004: (0-0 , 1-1 , 0-2 , 3-6 , 3-4)
Mavericks 2006: (1-2 , 0-0 , 2-2 , 2-4 , 1-4 , 0-0)
JJ: “Dwight shot 39 free throws “
Shaq: “Damn” 🤣😂😂💀
“I don’t need a sport psychologist,… but I’m going to be a sport psychologist”
If he was a great frethrow shooter. He would have been even more 🔥
JJ said Shaq we know your story you ain't never spent no time in the damn streets that Hard Knock Life degree is honorary my brother 😂
Talk 2 em Shaq !!!!!
"The games I missed wasn't my fault." Same guy that waited right before the season started to get surgery instead of during the summer and explained his reasoning as, "I got hurt on company time, so I’ll rehab on company time."

Did I hear Mr Sensitive just say "I'm not sensitive"...???
Speaking from dealing with mental health I don't like it when my psychologist says they don't need one . I need somebody that's been there with me!
For real. Sounds like he's talking down to people who have seen a sports psychologist
1:29 He WAS there when Nick Anderson missed 4 in a row.
I am wondering what kind of rim he has at his crib? 2m is diameter?
I heard Shaq and Tim Duncan hitting like 10-12 FTs in a row during practice then chocking during the game
JJ is catching none of Shaq’s references 😂
The big guys with their bigger arms struggle with their free throws, Wilt, Shaq, Dwight, Deandre Jordan and Andre Drummond to name a few. It's hard to be finesse with free throws because of their bigger biceps
The 3 point line was introduced until 1979 and Shaq was drafted in 1992. Bigs shooting 3s was not the norm. Now it is but that is mainly because of European players.
From Physic standpoint, taller people need a higher angel to hit the free throws. Its easier for smaller people to hit the free throw, that's why most of the best free throw shooter have the hight like JJ, he was one of the best ft shooter in Top 10.
That was Shaq going one on one with Shaq and losing. Free throws require finesse
This has happened to 3 of most dominant big man Shaq, Wilt and Dwight. They can all shoot when there's no one there, but when it comes to the actual game, they fold.. which makes me actually believe Wilts 100 point game because there was no camera's 😂
He missed a lot of "must have" free throws. He lives in total denial
The most dominant, unskilled player in history....
This clip alone proves why he pissed kobe off😂
If he's 75% FT shooter, he'd be Top 1 All Time Scoring. He'd be playing longer cause there will be no Hack-a-Shaq, which took a toll on his body.
The fact he said he doesn’t need a sports psychologist means he needs one
Love how locked in he is. The mindset. Thats where im trying to get at now. No reasons. Accepting ur flaws. Amazing stuff
Man if Yao doesn't get injured he would have been Shaq 2.0. Anyway if there was a draft of all the greatest players who gets picked before Shaq? And you not a "doctor."
*he might slip out the top 10 in points but he'll always be Top 5 GOAT* 💀
Wrong
Shaq: "when I needed to hit them in the finals I always hit them"
Shaq finals FT %: 48.4%
Always made them when it mattered
1:19 Dennis Rodman, even more so. He hated the fact that free throw slows his game down. But he would hustle his teammates in practices by shooting better than them in practices and in the clutch.
Can't believe JJ let Shaq get away with the "god humbling me" answer ...
Imagine if he shot 80% FT.
That was always my debate for Shaq's ft, he made em when they counted... never can say if the game is on the line and he's shooting em ya got a guaranteed win...
Shaq definitely didn't hit them in the finals when he needed to😂
maybe he's hitting more of them in the gym, but just looking at his shooting form alone, tells you all you need to know about his shooting. Not to put the guy down, he was obviously too strong and from the freethrow line his sot would be too strong as well and he tried to be careful about it but they would either be bricks or rim outs... I can respect that. He wanted to be dominant and with strength his freethrow percentage suffered. I have no respect for someone like Ben Simmons for example, who can't buy a bucket any way. It would've been easy for Shaq to crumble under pressure because of freethrows, but he suffered through it and overcame.
Yall should go look at his form in college. It was actually perfect
He is already outside top 10. But don’t tell him…save the forest.
Street degree… Hahahahahahhhaahhaha
This is the only guy who says “I don’t have ego and am humble but people let him off the hook” 😂
Shaq is honest as it gets, bro will need to take an axe to a tree if he falls out of them scoring race lmfao
All he does is lie. What a silly thing to say.
I love shaq
He said he doesn’t need to see a sports psychologist but admitted to making them in practice but for what ever reason he couldn’t in game?!
