I was at game 3 between Miami and Boston in 2011 and I saw Shaq’s last NBA basket. He could barely move. The man played until the wheels fell off and before he got hurt, he was actually having a good season starting over Perkins at center for the Celtics.
fr people talk trash about Shaq on the Celtics but that last year they had a real shot at a title. You look back at opening day that year it was those Celtics against the Heatles and the Celtics won and looked good with Shaq.
Perk was already gone by that point if I remember correctly
He was not having a good season and he cost the Celtics knowing he had nothing left and was out of shape

JJ is such a natural interviewer, it doesn't feel manufactured like some athlete-centered podcasts can be. It's just two dude who lived the pro life and having a conversation. It's real and raw and JJ brings that out of them so easily, I'm loving this

The not being “him” is what Klay went thru this year. That’s why he was sooo emotional after that one gam he wasn’t starting in, because deep down he too knew he wasn’t the same dominant player he use to be.
This here is 1000% true!. I was telling my friends this in the middle of this season. I criticized Klay for not being able to adjust and to accept the person he is today but i failed to acknowledge the grieving period
The thing I don’t get is how players lose their shot out of the blue. Losing athleticism, I can get. Losing speed, I can get, but losing your shot is something I don’t get. If you can shoot, you should always be able to shoot. Russ and Harden have gone through the same thing. I look at Russ now and wonder how he even was a scoring leader one year because he struggles so much with his shot. Harden is the same way. Dude can score 35 one night, than score only 13 the next time out

He was never a great shooter (we all know that), but the fact that he is shooting considerably worse is baffling to me. I wonder if he is one of those players that was not a natural shooter and worked on it constantly and the moment he stopped working on it disappeared. But this reasoning doesn’t make sense for someone like James harden. Maybe shooting has an underlying connection to the physicals or mental we can’t see. For instance, Klay is not as a great of shooter as he used to be ever since the ACL. But i have no idea just spitballing
@@Jared-qf1tj The reason players lose their shot is that shooting is inherently tied with your physical traits, be it the mechanics of your shot or how well you can find room to take them. A player like Klay wants to find space to take a shot, to get his feet set and to get into his rhythm. Losing even a little bit of his speed and coordination from injury can close the gap to the point that a shot that would be set and comfortable one year is an unsteady falling jumper the next. He literally can't get away fast enough from his defender to get a clean look. This also causes some issues getting lift on a shot, you can't get as high as quickly when you shoot so your shots are flatter and lack the push that comes from your legs. It just makes the accuracy window that much smaller.
@@blazefactor6849This. Klay is probably just as good in the gym and during shoot around as he ever was. But a 2% loss in physical speed and reaction time can make the world of difference at NBA level.
Based on this clip Shaq is a lot more self aware than I ever gave him credit. It’s a blessing and a curse. Whether he’s averaging 28 and 10 or 9 and 6 he’ll always be the Big Diesel.
He likes playing dumb and the bully. But he is very emotionnaly intelligent and knows a lot about psychology. But he likes to trigger people sometimes to see how they would react

I played a professional sport until I was 26, never made the big leagues as these guys did, and never made a fraction of their success, but when I wasn’t good enough to continue I absolutely went through some dark days.
It’s an identity crisis. Everyone knows you and defines you by the unique success you had as an athlete. Took a long time for me to accept my place in the next chapter. I think generational wealth would have helped me through it a bit better. 😅

That comment from JJ bout Shaq being in the Twitter era got me chuckling. It's almost so foreign to think there used to be a time where you'd have to *go out of your way* to expose yourself to that type of negativity instead of it just being everywhere
i don't know how shaq would have been able to handle it. i love the guy but he's awful at taking criticism and jokes if they are directed toward him. he gets super defensive at even the most mild ribbing.

it's actually interesting how much things changed during his career. when he came into the league cell phones existed but hardly anyone had them. by the time he left smartphones were extremely common.

Bill Russell is second. Wilt is third all time in WIn Shares and Shaq is 13th. Wilt won MVP four times... Shaq once. Shaq could play bully ball simply because of his bulk. My guess is that Wilt would have had no problem taking care of Shaq if they played and both were in their prime.

I’ve been a Shaq fan for years, but I also remember being very sad watching him during the final stretch of his career. When he was with the Suns, Cavs, and Celtics there were times he could hardly even move down the court, or finish plays he’d normally finish. I was happy to see him retire, and be regarded as one for the all time great big men.
When he played healthy for the Celtics they were insanely dominant. Says a lot about the greatness of Shaq even at that point. If he stayed healthy they would have won that year.

So while no where near his prime Shaq was still very good in PHX. He had Nash feeding him the ball and teams were focused in on Amare that Shaq ate good. He played a season and a half in PHX and the full season he was with us he played 75 games in 2008-09, his most games since 2000.He had lost weight and, at least at the time, got to work with one of the best training staffs in the NBA. At the age of 36 he put up 18 PPG-8.5 RPG-1.5 BPG on 61% shooting. Obviously far from prime Shaq standards but you are talking bout him like he was Bilbo after he gave up the Ring.
Shah has always been a respectful and honest person. I very impressed when he lamented about the way the L.A. Lakers treated "Mr. West".
Jerry West moved heaven and earth in his effort to bring Shaq to Los Angeles while the Orlando front office procrastinated and the fans were responding to polls saying he wasn't worth the asking price. Beyond that, Jerry West was an all-time great player and-by all accounts-an exceedingly honorable man. It's no surprise Shaq holds him in such high regard.

Shaq is a real one for talking about depression here, and other times. I can relate. Often just sitting in your house alone with nobody reaching out or caring. Just always being alone drives you to some very dark places....

When you are in the middle you are used to going up and down but when you are at the top there is only one way to go and that's down. It has to be miserable to be in a constant state of realization that you can never achieve the heights of where you were, because where you were is so elite that its near impossible to even exist in that realm.

Take it from someone who's been in business for 32 years of my 34 years of marriage, until my wife was diagnosed with having chronic Lymphoma leukemia two years ago and then me selling my business and retiring. We all need a purpose in life and stop being stagnant before losing the passion of life.

I loved JJ as a player because he was such a good piece for any team and that year with him and Jimmy I was rooting for them because I love those guys so much. But I never realized how much of a personality and a great mind on the topic of basketball he was. He brings the best out of all the players he gets on.

Just a PSA: anyone can use the word depression to describe what they are/were feeling. Yes, sometimes in life others may be having a harder time in general than you but that doesn’t invalidate what YOU are/were feeling. Don’t listen to those who compare struggles, that’s a fools errand and not helping anyone.
Depression effects us all from time to time. In some cases, limiting your expression because of what others say can even contribute to a lot of negative emotions that fuel depression or anxiety.

I grew up watching Shaq. I watch NBA on TNT religiously. I always had this idea that Shaq was a bit of a fool - great, probably smart also in some way, but a fool.

I don't think people realize how hard it is to transition like this in life. We think, "they have their whole life ahead of them what's the big deal?!" But they likely spent 50x the energy and effort in their career for ~20years than most do in a lifetime. They are compensated amazingly for it but the grief of putting in 100,000 hours or more and it being over is real.
Players used to always get near the end and say they wont miss the game yada, yada, and for some reason you kind of buy into that. But when you think about any of these players that play for even a few seasons it has to be very hard. They had success in life at a very young age now they have to punch the clock or find a hobby. Bo Jackson still sits in his garage in suburban Chicago and make arrows all day.

05-06 he stopped being SHAQ. He had injuries early in the season and his mobility was never the same. Van Gundy was the scapegoat because he held Shaq accountable for his defensive shortcomings. Three peat Shaq was so physically superior and hungry he let himself go and led to injuries
No, Shaq had his big toes fused because of arthritis. Luke Walton played with that Shaq, if I recall correctly. Fused big toes means you are much less athletic. Those quick spins went away, as well as his lob game. Kind of the same way that Dwight's back injuries made him human, as opposed to what he started off as.

I mean if you asked a girl out, you’re sad and depressed that she didn’t accept. If you’re constantly depressed, than yes, that’s a clinical issue, but most times,people are depressed from being poor, losing a job, not getting the girl or guy you like or even having your SO break up with you. Depression is a part of sadness. It just depends how long you let the depression linger

Some levels of status/ wealth and popularity or talent and or health to where you have to just get over it honestly, especially when you look at people that are struggling that have it a billion times worse than a multi millionaire Shaq with the world at his fingertips.
I worked concessions at the Orlando Arena when Shaq played for the Magic, I remember him getting ejected from a game, can't remember who they were playing. As he was heading back to the locker room, he was pissed off, knocking over chalk boards, or whatever was in his path.
However what amused me the most was watching I believe the GM name was Pat Davis at the time, watching him stress out and kiss Shaq's ssa, trying to calm him down.
I ran into Shaq a few times out and about during his Orlando days' he even gave my buddies and myself some passes to get in the gate for an after party he was having, after the club (we ended up leaving with some girls instead), The club was Deco's He used to have the Superman 64 parked out front.
Man we were hurt when he went to LA.
