@Michael Thr33d true, but Harley owners should see Kevin when and if they want to. You shouldn't have to rip into a fairly new bike, then spend thousands more just to keep it running. I'm so glad I got rid of my Twin Cam when I did.

    Hi Keven,
How does high crank case pressure cause a sumping condition?
Will you please help us understand?
I thought the return oil pump should keep up with the return oil in the crank case.
I can see a sumping issue would happen your engine has an excess amount of oil going into the motor, like bad piston cooling nozzles or excess bearing clearance.
Thank you for the wonderful videos.

I have never seen the inside on these motors. Can you explain where the oil is picked by the pump. I always thought that the sump part on the pump put out twice as much oil as the pressure side. I guess if the motor is on the kick stand, the pump won't drain the sump at idle? Thanks Kevin for what you do for all of us who want to know the nitty gritty.

I recently did the HD stage III 103ci to 110ci performance package with the SE585 cam, 4” cylinders, pistons, SE cam plate with SE oil pump, SE tappets. I believe my rear ACR is causing a leak because when I'm on long ride there is discoloration on the rear of my horn cover as well as the rear jug becoming extremely hot while riding. I may be seeking your services shortly; also, will it be possible to go up to a 117ci motor?

Hello all, I have been watching all of Mr, Baxter’s videos in search of good information on these Harley twin cam engines. I recently bought a 2015 FLHTK with the HO 103 twin cooled engine in her, 16K original miles on it. Has a SE ventilator on it and V&H OS slip ons with the FP3 tuner. My only source of info till this point Is a buddy who rides HD?? First some oil coming out of the air cleaner so he says they all do it gotta do the breather bypass? Here it starts, I was riding down the highway and the water pump quits on me so I limped it home(2 mi)and replaced it with the updated M8 water pump but at the same time I’m spinning wrenches I installed a external breather bypass and swapped the fluids out for AMSOIL. Start it back up and sure enough it has no oil dripping from the air cleaner but has awful top end tick and extreme loss of power after she’s up to temp. Not sure where to start, ordered service parts and wiring manuals from the motor company and am now hoping some of you guys with more knowledge and experience could chime in and give a guy starting out a hand? Where should I start looking, she ran just fine before this. Also if this is not the place for these kinds of questions is there a better? I’ve read through all the forums. Please and thanks all.

Not real familiar with Harley's but, was wondering if there is a sight glass for the oil level on them? Could the sumping issue be from left over engine oil in the cases after draining the oil and, just adding the recommended amount of oil possibly making the oil level higher then what is recommended?

Great content Kevin. I have a question concerning the black oil coming from the sump. I had found a kit to remove the old oil from the lines and pump after an oil change. It’s basically an oil filter housing minus the filter media. When you change the oil you put this dummy filter in place, disconnect the oil return line from the oil tank and run the bike till clean oil comes out then shut off the bike. The example I saw they had almost a whole quart of black oil. All that to ask would that be a sign of sumping? Being a dry sump engine I find it hard to believe you get a quart of dirty oil out of the lines and pump.

    • @icecoldeverett4177
      @icecoldeverett4177 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

IMO, scavenging your oil system is a solid idea, at least every other oil change. On a engine that is not sumping you will scavenge around 10oz and one that is sumping will be more, depending on the severity of the sumping issue. An additional note is the oil that never gets drained, contributes to the overfill and blow by condition, that is a constant concern with Harley owners. The remaining oil needs to be added to the amount of oil your adding to equal the stated fill ratio of 4 quarts for your TC.

One problem with having a newer bike under warranty. Unless you have the money set back. When you know theres a problem like sumping there's really nothing the dealerships or factory will do. It runs, keep on trucking till it breaks is the attitude.

i have a question on carbon on piston crown removal in a running motor... now i know you can spray into the air cleaner a little water when engine is running and rev it a little when spraying a little water in the air intake to break-up the carbon on the crown of the piston in a car/truck engine... can i do the same thing to a motorcycle engine??? now remember this when doing this: that carbon has that has got loose and is blowing out the exhaust valve can maybe just maybe get stuck on the valve and or the valve seat and then you will have a large problem, the exhaust valve will not close 100% and that hot air exhaust will burn that valve quickly and that my friend is a costly mistake ... just say`n ... just remove the cylinders and pop out the pistons and do it the correct way i guess...

I have a question. Do your engine mods prevent the sumping issue and have you ever tore down one of your own engines to see if you have prevented the sumping? Thanks

After many inspections, we have not had a single customer with a sumping issue on any of our TC or M8 builds.

Seems to me it would be a hard to read on Pistons with the EPA rules dumping of the blow by being dumped in on top of the pistons.

I have a question why does Harley not copy the design of the S+S crank by pressing a solid pin in the center of the crankpin at 600 pounds pressure, that would most likely solve their run out problems?

Is 117 also a sweet spot for longevity on the M8's? I believe you mentioned in the first video of this series that Greg from NC was having his M8 (long distance) built as a 117.

117 up to 124 works well on M8. thicker case, etc.... it is a great format to build on.

Is there a way to de-carbonize the top end? And would you recommend it?

yes pull plugs before oil change and spray your favorite like seafoam and let sit overnight crank run for 5 minutes or so then change oil ,this also helps to maintain tune ,

My ‘13 Ultra Classic has 60K miles on it; stock with no upgrades. Getting ready to upgrade to Feuling 525 Reaper cams and cam plate/oil pump/tappets kit. What is the max runout I can allow before the crank needs to be serviced, thus preventing the very issues you are revealing in these videos? Excellent videos, by the way. 👍

Is there supposed to be NO oil in the case when the cam chest is opened up? That’s counterintuitive to me
