I love this channel…it renewed my love for track and field but most importantly the objectivity and passion in it makes it a joy to follow. So many channels are biased to one nation and many commentators have no respect for African and global athletes…you always take time to pronounce names correctly and give equal attention to athletic success regardless of where the person is from. I opine that what sets him apart is his laser-like focus ( I saw from the Ineos 159 Doccie, that he stays in camp during training season and has delegated management of the family business to his able wife) & work ethic-a potent mix. I mean Bekele did run the 2:01:41 marathon and has been challenging the world’s best times for a few years now despite inconsistencies. These don’t technically count as global titles but I still feel it shouldn’t go without saying. In a way, he’s still also competing at the top of the world in the marathon, even if he hasn’t happened to lift any official global titles.

@@nickatnite16 there’s a little more to it than that. Bekele has been more injury prone than Kipchoge, and in the marathon they’ve only raced each other at their best on one occasion. It was the 2016 London marathon, and Kipchoge was wearing secret Vaporfly prototypes while Bekele was wearing old Streak 5’s. Bekele finished a little over two minutes behind Kipchoge, which is a difference easily accounted for by the shoe tech. Give Bekele a pair of Vaporfly’s that day and there’s no doubt in my mind it would’ve come down to a sprint finish between the two.

Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele are superb athletes and incredible ambassadors of athletics. There longevity and excellence is crazy.
Emil Zátopek was absolutely phenomenal winning the 5000m, 10000m and marathon in one Olympics. His style, personality and character unique.
Could you do a video on Emil Zátopek if you have not already 😃

It's much much easier to remain consistent in distance/endurance running than almost any other Olympic track event. The reason sprinters and other explosive based event athletes can't stay on top for long is because they require more muscle mass which is extremely difficult to maintain especially as you get older and the more you have the more beat up and damaged they get and their ligaments and tendons have a much higher risk of injury too. Distance runners don't have that problem and can continue to operate at near peak proficiency for as long as they want as long as they keep training.

I know this channel is limited to track and field, but if we widen the conversation to include other sports Kelly Slater, the pro surfer, is doing pretty well. He won his first World Title in 1992 at the age of 20, and his last in 2011, at 39.

I believe Kipchoge can still win the Olympics at the age of 39 in distance running 39 is still a spring chicken, I believe in the future athletes even in their late 40s can still win Olympic titles, the technology about running & running shoes are improving all the time

I’m interested to see how his body holds up when he retires. Some engines actually have less issues when run hard consistently, but fall apart when you stop pushing them. I wonder if his body will be the same way. I hope not, but something to follow up with.

He’ll likely be fine for a very long time. I mean he loves running. He’s gonna retire from competing eventually no doubt, but he’s more than likely going to continue running after until the day he physically cannot like a lot of other normal people do

Yeah look, I'd bet gold against copper that Kipchoge won't stop running when he retires from competition. I suspect he'll still maintain a training schedule that would destroy most athletes, and that he'll remain heavily involved in training the next few generations of Kenyan distance runners.
