What an utterly magnificent, tremendous performance by the incredible genius Karajan conducting one of my all-time favourite Symphonies, Schumann Symphony number Two. The first movement has an ecstatic fire and a dramatic sweep, the second movement battles on and tge fate theme seems victorious. The third moment despairs and evokes loneliness and sadness and the final movement is sensational, the ecstasy and the joy and acceptance of fate leading to a euphoric conclusion. The first recording ever that I heard of Schumann's 2nd Symphony was Katajans studio recording in 1972 and I didn't know that this live performance existed. Robert Schumann, what a genius and from one genius to another in Karajan, gd bless them both.
8,9y 10 de enero de 1972, 3 Concierto de Brandenburgo, 6 piezas op.6 de Webern y por primera y última vez esta 2 de Schhumann... para qué insistir. Fabuloso!!! Muchas Gracias.

This is fascinating - and I'm eager to listen to it with a score toe to toe with his recording. One senses the struggle with the music and especially near the end where it's also something of a struggle for the musicians. This was my imprint Schumann 2 and I find many qualities in it which aren't really reflected elsewhere. This reading is more to my liking than the studio recording - it has greater transparency esp the winds and I think more ebb and flow of pacing except I think it tightens up a bit in the coda of the last movement - veering toward the monumental - which some think it's not where Schumann was going. Nevertheless less it's a magnificent find. I have a list from the radio archives I'd love to hear: a late BPO Tallis Fantasia, the 1979 Rhapsody in Blue, the best of the Berg Concerto and Bartok Third Concertos in circulation. Oh and a decent live Berlin Bruckner 5.

22:28 Karajans speciality. Celibidache contemptfully compared him with Coca-Cola, but Karajan always (just like Furtwängler) delivered the audience their fix - Intensity
According to www.discoverkarajan.com/#/discover/works/TXVzaWNXb3JrOjQ0OQ==?sub=1 , which is not always the most reliable source, he appears to have programmed this work only once, in 1972 for 3 concerts which took place on 8 9 & 10th of January 1972. An Italy performance does not appear in this database. Thanks for the upload. Best!
There was an Urania CD of a 1954 performance with RAI in Rome. This has been proved to be false. This has been dropped from the Discoverkarajan discography.
So, who conducted which orchestra in that performance? I am very surprised that he did not conduct it more frequently. In my humble opinion, his recording is very good and convincing.
Good performance, yet I think not his best performance. I don't understand why Karajan shy away from performing Schumann 2 but leaving only few recordings? It's a pity that this great Symphony was not HIS favourite cup of tea???

As always, karajan live recordings are better than his studio recordings, great performance and great sound quality

thank you Sir for the upload - I love this type of raw sound live recordings. To hell with dry studio recordings. Cheers from Berlin

Grandioso.
After this performance, Karajan said to his concertmaster "nie moll", never conducting it again.
"Nie wieder" or "niemals wieder!"
He didn’t like it ?

Giuseppe
probably why he conducted it so rarely

@@muhchung Who knows, I don't
37:57 suena como obra de Wagner. A lo mejor por su influencia.
BBC radio3 Was broadcast 1973?
Sounds like Bruckner. Does’nt come out the madness of Schumann.sorry bout that.Great conductor capable of peculiar atmospheres but not this time.
