Incredible, out of this world... I remember when He, the great Khachaturian was conducting at the concert dedicated to his 60 anniversary and I was among the violin players , it was absolutely magnificent. Till now I hold that episode like one of the greatest moment in my life. I consider Him as a greatest composer of the 20-th Century.

My god, what an experience!!! I can almost feel it, just thinking about it. Such good fortune! Absolutely incredible.
Perhaps you will understand this: Since I was a child, I had always wanted to choreograph the Waltz as the first dance for my wedding. Unbeknownst to me, I would be falling in love with someone with a severe chronic illness, and it was too much for her to be able to do so. But never mind, for every time I hear this, we dance the Waltz together in the grandest ballroom, with all the temerity of loving without restraint or fear, in the face of all the ways life challenges all of us.

I still have the RCA LP that I listened to at my grandparent’s apartment in 1954 when I was only age 8. I would sit in front of their Magnavox and couldn’t get enough of Masquerade! Still can’t! The man is a gift from our Creator! We who listen, are truly blessed.

what i have just listened to was extremely beautiful, but what impacted me the most was No. 04 - Romance. i dont know what came over me but halfway through it i began to cry. this overwhelming feeling that was so familiar yet unknown to me that im struggling to put it into words as i type this. it was like a mixture of passion and sorrow.
whatever it was, i was moved and i loved it

The Masquerade depicts the tragedy of a woman who is killed by her husband over a false accusation of infidelity. The story begins with a grand masquerade ball where the Baroness Schtral, who is secretly in love with the Prince, grants him a bracelet as a token of her affection. As the Baroness is disguised by her mask, the Prince does not know who she is, prompting him to confide in his acquaintance, Arbenin, that he will search until he finds the mystery woman who gave the gift. Things however get complicated when Arbenin comes home and notices his own wife, Nina, is missing a bracelet that suspiciously resembles the one the Prince possessed. Assuring her husband that she most likely lost the bracelet carelessly at the masquerade, Nina visits the baroness’ home in search of her misplaced jewelry. Unfortunately she meets the prince instead and in a grand misunderstanding the Prince is convinced that she gave him the bracelet. Gossip of Nina’s “flirtations” spread around the community and eventually reaches a furious Arbenin. Enraged that his wife would cheat on him he begins to plan jealous revenge on his unfaithful wife. Meanwhile, the Baroness hears of the whole mess and confesses to the prince that it was she who gave him the bracelet and that Nina is innocent after all. At the next ball the Prince returns the bracelet to Nina and warns her of the extent of her husbands anger and distrust. Of course Nina does not take him seriously. Later in the evening when Nina suddenly falls gravely ill her husband reveals that he poisoned the ice cream he gave her earlier and that she will surely die. In desperation Nina tries to convince her husband that she is innocent and that it is all a misunderstanding but ultimately it is too late, she dies. Only after wards does Arbenin cool down enough to realize the mistake he has made. To add salt to the wound the prince himself arrives to confirm that there was no affair between Nina and himself and he gives Arbenin a letter from the Baroness which explains everything. Opps…

Btw it's a play by Lermontov from 1835. The play was banned in its day, some say because it was based on a real dead "Nina" killed by her husband. I don't know if that's true though

    • @DeGroteLaaf
      @DeGroteLaaf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

One can criticize the sensibility of what someone is happy for. Some may say ignorance is bliss, but to be happy for true reasons is far better as it is a stable foothold that will never falter. Clearly, this is where OPs logic falters as this is no achievement of his, nor of all Armenians - no, the true achievements here lie with Khachaturian and the musicians who played his piece.
Though one can always argue that it's due to Armenia as a whole that made his education that allowed him to make this music available. However, then at least equally so should all giants in music before him, that laid the groundwork, be praised. Much like how it goes in science.
It makes more sense to be proud as a musician, as they were the reasons institutions like the ones he may have studied at existed at all. Or perhaps as a purveyor of music, since music wouldn't have gotten as far without the demand for it.

I remember when I did this for a concert. We had the original version, so it was 16 double-sided pages. So my stand partner and I combined our parts so we didn't have to flip pages from front to back. We ended up having 32 pages stacked on one music stand just sliding them as we got to them. A warning to people doing the original version, be prepared for a hell of a lot of page turns.

I listened this music for the first time in my life when I was 7 or 8 years old, as a the background music of the Pinocchio story, on a 33 rev. record!! It was a wonderful surprise when, many years after, I discovered the name of the piece and his author. And I may say, it's a pity we have lost the tradition to teach children classical music through that kind of media. TV cartoons use to do the same, they played fragments of fine classical music to tell the stories.. thanks Sérgio SC, and to great Khachaturian.

[1] Η μουσική είναι περισσότερο γνωστή με the form of a five-movement suite

    Galop
