I got to photograph his concert in Indianapolis and meet & interview him backstage in 1997 for a music paper I freelanced for. He was very down to earth and, for lack of a better word, "normal," and put me right at ease. A gifted, graceful artist and a warm and sincere man.

His songs were all over the radio when I was a kid growing up so I developed a natural ear and appreciation for Dan's Music at a young age. Getting older and becoming a musician myself I ventured off into dozens of different directions of other music and artists as influence, but I have always throughout the years found myself feeling a strong pull, returning back to Dans music. Didn't know him but he and his music is like an old friend always there to comfort me through the music. I remember doing work for Utility company few years ago temporarily working in Peoria Illinois area and was unaware that was Dan's childhood hometown. I was enjoying lunch break taking stroll along the Riverfront near the park and came across a beautiful moving Dan Fogelberg Tribute placed there by the locals that said it was the very location Dan himself spent many a Time, inspired by the beauty and relaxing Riverfront doing some of his early writing. Hard to explain how strongly that affected me. Prior to that moment throughout the years Dan was just a favorite artist that came and went throughout the years of my life, but suddenly I found myself standing in a physical location that he himself drew inspiration for writing some of those beautiful songs, some of the very songs that moved me and so many others Still to this day that expected surprise in a random Park when I was an out-of-town visitor during my workday has remained a cherished special memory PS - I too am glad Fil said what he said about the almost disrespect to Dan's father. Dan actually spoke about this in an interview, how he did not like the progression he was seeing among people in charge of record companies and record labels becoming more and more detached emotionally from the wishes of artists and messages of songs I hope Dan is resting at ease knowing he is still missed and his music is cherished
Dan Fogelberg was in a class by himself. A brilliant songwriter, musician and singer, there was no one from the 70-80’s era that could touch him. Some, were better singers but weren’t great songwriters. Some, were better guitarists, but couldn’t sing or have the flawless vocal range and resonance Dan had. Some were better songwriters ( not really) but couldn’t play a baby grand or electric /acoustic guitar as well as Dan did. He was a master musician, unlike DYLAN or Jackson Brown. NO one comes close to the supernova talent Dan possessed and it’s probable we won’t see the likes of him for another 100 years. He was a once in a lifetime talent, master of his craft and a gift to us all. Gone way too soon!
We were blessed to be Dan’s neighbors. Timothy, I fed George many late meals! Our son,Troy, worked on the Ranch during the summers. Dan was a great neighbor, very humble and down to earth. I loved his little impish smile when he received a compliment. Precious memories!
I'll probably catch hell for this, but I really believe Dan was a generational artist/songwriter/musician. A genuine and talented multi-instrumentalist. He could rock out with the best at times with killer electric leads and then melt hearts with tender ballads. I saw him live a few times as a solo act and a few more with a hot back-up band. Innocent Age belongs in the great albums of all time list, imho. A double disc set without a clunker in the whole bunch. 'Twin Sons...' is another one of the 'great album' variety. Last time I saw him was in his 'I beat cancer' era. The voice wasn't as strong, but the musicianship and overall performance was vintage Fogelberg. Yet another great one taken from us far too soon
It is rare, I believe, that you can say when a parent dies that there was nothing left unsaid that needed to be said. So many never get to say good bye.
Phil I want to thank you so much for recognizing. He touched the soul of so many people while he was here. He had an amazing brilliant voice. And he was one of the most amazing songwriters of our time. He could capture your imagination and take you places. And make you feel things that maybe you might never have in your lifetime. I love rock and roll music and it's fun and freeing. It just want to make sure you get up and move. But when you get a singer-songwriter like this man was of this caliber. Nothing could top that. I think Dan fogelberg was highly underrated by a lot of people. His music will surely live on forever. I want to thank you once again for recognizing Dan fogelberg. He was taken from us much too early. He is surely missed.
Dan Fogelberg was flat-out great! He did everything on his albums, vocals, back-up vocals, and most of the instruments. He was my all time fave. Fil, you have covered so much more than I would have thought anyone of your era would! You got his history down, his music down and his ups and downs down. I loved his songwriting and music so much! Dan was an amazing story teller. I have to agree that we put our own imagination to his songs. His song “Same Old Lang Syne” is a brilliant story of two ex lovers accidental meeting at a grocery store Christmas Eve. The way he sings and tells the story I almost feel like I’m intruding in their reunion. Brilliant singer and songwriter. Thanks Fil! ❤️🤘🏼
Agree, love that song - but always think it’s weird that they play it all the time at the holidays - like, it’s not a Christmas carol for heavens sake lol, it’s actually pretty depressing - they do the same thing with Joni Mitchell’s “River” - “oh they mention Christmas, must be a holiday song” - um, no.

A close friend of mine played guitar, Mando and Steele on his 1980's band tours, Byrd Burton, and when Dan would come to Nashville he would stay at Byrd's small condo on the sleeper sofa. Very much a down to earth guy and a gentleman to his band of all-stars.

I had all his albums in the 70's, and while being raised in a very troubled home, Dan's songs would deeply touch my heart, as this one did ! What touched my heart in this particular review, Sir Fil, was YOUR caring that Dan's dad's name was covered up, and yes, that was a tremendous dishonor to the man......I applaud YOUR sense of integrity, maturity, and honor to whom honor is due !!!! As a parent of 2 adult sons, I thank you for mentioning it as being very disrespectful !!!!!!!! You, Sir, are a class act........... :-D
DF was my all time favourite singer songwriter. Loved his younger voice ... it got a little rougher (and lower in tone) as in this performance from "Greetings from the West" DVD. On The Innocent Age album he played most instruments and harmonised perfectly with himself. Such perfect, clear tones. He could also play in multiple styles... I was late to the party, but after buying the album that Leader of the Band was on ... I had to go back and buy ALL of his previous albums. I even bought the High Country Snows bluegrass album ... and loved that too. I would have absolutely loved to get over to one of his concerts. I was saving to go to the USA (to see him) ... but he died. This guy had rare integrity in his music. RIP Dan.
The only part that bugs me about that song is the line "...of western Kentucky on wobbly knees..." Anyone who knows anything about Thoroughbreds knows that it should be "central Kentucky". Other than that, it chokes me up every time!

I first saw him when I was 18. I absolutely fell in love....for life. I especially love his first three albums. So pure. Not enough words to express my deep feelings for this music.
Fil, you are an amazing young man. I just found you last month and subscribed to your channel. You have done such wonderful analysis of people who were popular before you were even born. But you “got” how special lyrics were of different artists. Today, you had me in tears. Dan came into my life in 1979, while in college. Longer was the song that spoke to me. From there, I became a forever fan! I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert 3 times. What a true artist. I feel that his music was the tapestry of my life. What a sad day it was when we lost him. An amazing thing happened, by 2010 we met, via FB, other fans like me. He was born in Peoria, ILLINOIS and in August 2010, there was a park dedicated to him. There are three boulders in front of the river with lyrics to some of his songs. Along with smaller stones with key phrases of his songs. Just beautiful. The people we met have become our family. We call ourselves DanFam! We gather every year to pay homage to him and his career. In 2010, we met his mom, one of his brothers and his wife, Jean. By the way, I shared your video with her along with posting it on my timeline on FB. We’ve moved around to the different cities that were meaningful to him and in each city, our DanFam members get together and put on incredible performances. People who actually worked with him have come to share songs and stories. Listening to your description of Dan, lyrics and his performances, was just so spot on! You covered so much, it made me feel like you knew him. You did and do such justice to the artists. Thank you!!!
Great analyses, Fil! I think Dan would approve, as well. When I was in my teens, Dan's first 4 albums really helped me out in shutting out the noise and stress of life. He still does and he will forever be my favorite artist. Hope to see you on the other side, Dan! 🤟

As a music lover's daughter who watched jazz with the enthusiasm of producer John Hammond. When my Dad died in 1987, I saw how exactly our genes went for music. Were he alive today, Fil, he and I would watch your analyses together every night. Like you he'd lift the needle mid-so that I wouldn't miss a special solo. Thanks, Dan, and you Fil for honoeing his tribute.
Laurence Folgelberg was the Band/Orchestra director at the High school I attended and Dan taught me my first licks on a guitar when he was still in high school teaching part time at a local music store. The keyboard lick on this video was originally a brass line on the record as a tribute to Mr. Folgelberg and his love for the "big band" sound and his "stage band at Pekin Community High School back in the 1970's. I only had a passing experience with Mr. (Laurence) Folgelberg as I was one of the contest choir/vocalists and we would only rarely work with the stage band. They were both special men and are sorely missed by those of us who knew them.
Huge Dan Fogelberg fan, from Part Of The Plan to All Night Laundromat Blues and more. Nearly cried when I heard he'd died. Took my nephew to see Van Halen for 1984. Show was good but speakers to the ceiling sounded muddy. Make good was taking my Wife to see Dan Fogelberg, actually the second time. Him and crew mic'd Fender combos. Clear as a bell and He could play.

I never had the opportunity to see him play live, but I equate his talent on the guitar to that of Paul Simon and John Denver. I did see both of them play live. Huge, longtime Dan Fan. Most don’t know how great a guitar player he was live. When you think about it, this guy’s early albums had the Eagles and JD Souther as his backup singers!

I was introduced to Dan Fogelberg in 1977 and fell in love with his music. The last time I saw him in concert, it was just him, his guitar and piano. It was amazing! To this day his songs are in my soul. R.I.P. Dan 💙
You can tell a lot of people liked him. Reading the other comments, I like him even more. I still walk around my house singing Part of the Plan, although not as much as I used to. He was one of the best singer/ songwriter/ performers.
My first wife and I saw Dan in the late 80s solo in the mist of our divorce! We left walking hand and hand smiling! We witnessed and felt feelings of our life and realized how much we loved each other thru his incredible lyrics! And no we didn’t change our mind about our marriage but it made our divorce so much easier and helped us make it easier on us and our kids! Dan was incredible musician and his music and lyrics were about real life and relationships! Very few musicians compare to his compassion and soul! Once again Phil excellent video and analysis! I've loved Dan's music for almost 50 years now. Ironically, it wasn't hearing *him* sing his songs that introduced me to them, but a trio of young men who played in a Howard Johnson's Rum Keg Lounge in Riverside, California who covered several of his tunes. After that, I was smitten. I think I have every album and CD he did, and still love them all. I was fortunate to see him live several times, both with, and without a band...absolute magic!! ❤

This is the first time I've ever heard Dan Fogelberg's music. I kind of dig it and I respect him. Got to give you props man - you have great knack for consistently presenting such a wide variety of musicians from a wide variety of genres and breaking it all down so nicely and thoughtfully. You definitely have exposed me to lots of musicians I don't think I would have ever considered (and I listen to a lot of variety of music and musicians). Thanks man.
My favorite by Dan was Run for the Roses, he was commissioned to write a song for a big anniversary of the Kentucky Derby in the early 80's, I think by CBS. Anyway, it's a particularly beautiful song. It can bring a tear.
Phil, I used to go to a Bar that played records that were popular. Once I heard Dan's albums I was always in the bartenders face asking him to play the Netherlands album, it was in the days of romance, mystery and the unknowable. I would just listen and dream, dream, dream of that Perfect Girl who could fulfill the desires of my heart. Only Dan Fogelberg could articulate the yearnings of my heart. And, still to this day, no one has come close to the spiritual connection Dan created with my Heart! Miss him, only saw him once in Atlanta at the Fox. Great Show. Thanks.
Omg when i heard his album SOUVENIRS i so much wanted to play acoustic guitar. Took me a long time. But that album inspired me so. Loved you Dan. As the Raven FLIES and so many others still make me cry
I'm with you, friend. It was 1975, and Fogelberg was opening for the Eagles. I had never heard of him but I went out the next day and got Souvenirs. I had already been playing for a couple of years but that just cemented it for me. Fogelberg was a big inspiration for me as I set out on the path of being a songwriter, guitar and keyboard player, making the big move to L.A. An incredible journey, to be sure. But here is one of the strangest things that happened on that magical long and winding road. The last song on Souvenirs was There's a Place in the World for a Gambler. When I was a teenager I used to lay on my bed with my headphones and listen to that song, the ending with all the harmonies, all the voices and I would just be mesmerised by the whole thing. Years later l found out that my then girlfriend had been one of those vocalists, and if I listen to that song I can hear her in there. But yeah, learning how to play every song on that album helped me a lot in my early days of playing acoustic. From that countrified Morning Sky to the intricate finger picking on Changing Horses or Song from Half Mountain. As the Raven Flies, yeah just really great stuff and just that one album taught me so much. I assume you know Wysteria from the first album? Wow what are those chords I gotta know!! LOL!! Just his first few albums were a musical education, you know? Ah I've blabbed on long enough, I was just glad to see another early Fogelberg guitar playing fan here. Cheers and best wishes!
Been to hundreds of concerts but DF stood out among all of them for some reason. I guess he had a way of touching folks in the crowd as if he were singing to all of us personally. He had a great show and played many of my favorites that are mostly either B-sides or obscure titles that I connected to most. As usual Fil, fantastic job analyzing DF a most underrated performer that spanned many decades.
In his earlier years after he'd gained some popularity, he was known to be a real jerk to his fans & audiences. His cousin, a priest in Dallas, said in his later years he realized he was wrong fr that attitude. I know when I saw him hm in a small, intimate venue concert in his beginning, the audiences was singing along to a song and he stopped & admonished us saying if we were going to do the singing, then he was just going to leave. But I still love his music & Run For the Roses is one of my favorite songs ever.

The last time I saw him was 2003 Fall. My dear Dad had just died August 6, 2003. The venue was very small - Echo Basin Ranch -between Mancos & Cortez, Colorado. As a pianist I always loved his "To the Morning," etc. played on the beautiful black grand Yamaha piano he always played. It was a very small crowd & raining a little. We had just buried my Father on a hill top cemetry over my right shoulder. I could see it from the concert. I balled my eyes out. I fell in love with Dan Fogelberrg after seeing an 8-track clearance in a small store while driving from Dyersberg, Tennessee to Jackson, TN. I looked at the list of songs on the $2.99 8- track including Aspen, OldTennessee, etc. & bought it because I was living in ole Tennessee & wanted to live in Colorado. Needless to say,that day in 1977 I became a huge Dan Fogelberg fan. Home Free, Souveniers, Captured Angel, High Mountain snows - "Linda lost her lover in the early part of August" I saw him so many times at LSU to Red Rocks to the High Schoool Gym for the girls basketball team winning state in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Lived 60 miles from his Pagosa Home. Now I'm in Colorado for years.....I'm 60 now & he is a part of me forever. RIP dear one. Phil, thank you for always giving us so much more that just the song, but the story of the artist & their artistry

After Dan's death,his album Love In Time was released in 2009!!! Also,a live album from 1979 at Carnegie Hall in NYC was released not so long ago!Dan also released a great album in 2000,that was live with a stellar live band!-at times! Finally,a great tribute album was released not long ago,with many great artists covering Dan's songs! 1995 had Dan doing another album with Tim Weisberg.

Goosebumps on this one...as you said flawless guitar playing and on top of that the expression in his vocals is outstanding. Probably due to the fact that he's singing about such a personal story, in addition to his incredible natural talent. Loved your review of Dan & this beautiful song. I saw him several times between 1975 & 2003 and can tell you he was simply amazing in concert... both with & without his backup band. After he released this song, he played it during every concert, sitting in this chair, just Dan & his acoustic guitar. Still get choked up remembering that performance & those shows. He always said, before playing, that if he'd only written one song in his life, Leader of the Band would be that song. I sure miss him.... RIP Dan ❤️
My wife and I attended his concert at Red Rocks just west of Denver, CO. Probably back in the mid to late 90's. Just Dan and his guitar for 2 or 3 hours. Fantastic.

I especially love his early music and High Country Snows is absolutely one of my favorite albums. Souvenirs is another one. Some of his songs brings me to tears. Thank you for acknowledging that in his early work he played almost every instrument in recording. If feel he really did not get the acknowledgment he deserved when he passed away.
Sometimes Dan gets a bad rap for being “MOR” (Middle Of The Road/Easy Listening) but, as you say, he is flawless and underrated on the guitar. Everything is on time in terms of the fingers attacking the strings/fretboard at the exact right moment. Great storyteller as well.
NuclearGrizzly - I like a lot of things that were/are considered by many to be MOR. I wasn’t talking so much about my personal tastes as public perceptions in the Rock era when he wasn’t necessarily “cool” to listen to John Denver, The Carpenters, Kenny Rogers, later Chicago, etc. I listen to and enjoy a lot of what would be considered to be easy listening including the examples I just gave. Sorry if I gave the impression that I was dissing easy listening.

This is the essence of music. Drawing you in. You are not even realizing that he is playing or even performing......you are thinking of your Dad...which is what he was doing and what he wanted you to do...that is another level, another level of human experience. That is special.
Beautiful song, and amazing vocals and guitar. The Antichrist of Music Sony. My most appreciated respected and loved teacher was my junior high band director John Acosta. He could motivate and teach people to be better than what they were by setting expectations higher than they really were capable of. He didn't tell them that they weren't supposed to be able to attain those goals. He did however believe they could and taught us to play at a level that was over our head. He gave me to drive for excellence that propelled me through most of my life. I can understand how this song about Dan's father reaches out from the heart so much.
You mentioned how he put a lot of his life into his songs. I saw an interview with him on MTV he once where other people would go to a psychologist, he’d write a song. As you said, he was also talented in areas outside of music. He designed many of his own album covers.

Dan and I were at U. of Illinois at the same time. Didn't know him, but saw him many times at the Red Herring coffee house, and even once at a free concert in the dorm basement. Dan was playing mostly his own stuff, usually accompanying himself on guitar or sometimes piano. Dan was always a fine guitarist as well as a singer/songwriter.

I'll probably catch hell for this, but I really believe Dan was a generational artist/songwriter/musician. A genuine and talented multi-instrumentalist. He could rock out with the best at times with killer electric leads and then melt hearts with tender ballads. I saw him live a few times as a solo act and a few more with a hot back-up band. Innocent Age belongs in the great albums of all time list, imho. A double disc set without a clunker in the whole bunch. 'Twin Sons...' is another one of the 'great album' variety. Last time I saw him was in his 'I beat cancer' era. The voice wasn't as strong, but the musicianship and overall performance was vintage Fogelberg. Yet another great one taken from us far too soon

My mom baby sat Dan when he was a small child. Her father played in the orchestra with Dan's father. Small world, short lives.
Phil I want to thank you so much for recognizing. He touched the soul of so many people while he was here. He had an amazing brilliant voice. And he was one of the most amazing songwriters of our time. He could capture your imagination and take you places. And make you feel things that maybe you might never have in your lifetime. I love rock and roll music and it's fun and freeing. It just want to make sure you get up and move. But when you get a singer-songwriter like this man was of this caliber. Nothing could top that. I think Dan fogelberg was highly underrated by a lot of people. His music will surely live on forever. I want to thank you once again for recognizing Dan fogelberg. He was taken from us much too early. He is surely missed.
Dan Fogelberg was flat-out great! He did everything on his albums, vocals, back-up vocals, and most of the instruments. He was my all time fave. Fil, you have covered so much more than I would have thought anyone of your era would! You got his history down, his music down and his ups and downs down. I loved his songwriting and music so much! Dan was an amazing story teller. I have to agree that we put our own imagination to his songs. His song “Same Old Lang Syne” is a brilliant story of two ex lovers accidental meeting at a grocery store Christmas Eve. Agree, love that song - but always think it’s weird that they play it all the time at the holidays - like, it’s not a Christmas carol for heavens sake lol, it’s actually pretty depressing - they do the same thing with Joni Mitchell’s “River” - “oh they mention Christmas, must be a holiday song” - um, no.

A close friend of mine played guitar, Mando and Steele on his 1980's band tours, Byrd Burton, and when Dan would come to Nashville he would stay at Byrd's small condo on the sleeper sofa. Very much a down to earth guy and a gentleman to his band of all-stars.

I had all his albums in the 70's, and while being raised in a very troubled home, Dan's songs would deeply touch my heart, as this one did ! What touched my heart in this particular review, Sir Fil, was YOUR caring that Dan's dad's name was covered up, and yes, that was a tremendous dishonor to the man......I applaud YOUR sense of integrity, maturity, and honor to whom honor is due !!!! As a parent of 2 adult sons, I thank you for mentioning it as being very disrespectful !!!!!!!! You, Sir, are a class act........... :-D
DF was my all time favourite singer songwriter. Loved his younger voice ... it got a little rougher (and lower in tone) as in this performance from "Greetings from the West" DVD. On The Innocent Age album he played most instruments and harmonised perfectly with himself. Such perfect, clear tones. He could also play in multiple styles... I was late to the party, but after buying the album that Leader of the Band was on ... I had to go back and buy ALL of his previous albums. I even bought the High Country Snows bluegrass album ... and loved that too. I would have absolutely loved to get over to one of his concerts. I was saving to go to the USA (to see him) ... but he died. This guy had rare integrity in his music. RIP Dan.

The only part that bugs me about that song is the line "...of western Kentucky on wobbly knees..." Anyone who knows anything about Thoroughbreds knows that it should be "central Kentucky". Other than that, it chokes me up every time!

Fil, you are an amazing young man. I just found you last month and subscribed to your channel. You have done such wonderful analysis of people who were popular before you were even born. But you “got” how special lyrics were of different artists. Today, you had me in tears. Dan came into my life in 1979, while in college. Longer was the song that spoke to me. From there, I became a forever fan! I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert 3 times. What a true artist. I feel that his music was the tapestry of my life. What a sad day it was when we lost him.
An amazing thing happened, by 2010 we met, via FB, other fans like me. He was born in Peoria, ILLINOIS and in August 2010, there was a park dedicated to him. There are three boulders in front of the river with lyrics to some of his songs. Along with smaller stones with key phrases of his songs. Just beautiful. The people we met have become our family. We call ourselves DanFam! We gather every year to pay homage to him and his career. In 2010, we met his mom, one of his brothers and his wife, Jean. By the way, I shared your video with her along with posting it on my timeline on FB.
We’ve moved around to the different cities that were meaningful to him and in each city, our DanFam members get together and put on incredible performances. People who actually worked with him have come to share songs and stories.

As a music lover's daughter who watched jazz with the enthusiasm of producer John Hammond. When my Dad died in 1987, I saw how exactly our genes went for music. Were he alive today, Fil, he and I would watch your analyses together every night. Like you he'd lift the needle mid-so that I wouldn't miss a special solo. Thanks, Dan, and you Fil for honoeing his tribute.

Laurence Folgelberg was the Band/Orchestra director at the High school I attended and Dan taught me my first licks on a guitar when he was still in high school teaching part time at a local music store. The keyboard lick on this video was originally a brass line on the record as a tribute to Mr. Folgelberg and his love for the "big band" sound and his "stage band at Pekin Community High School back in the 1970's. I only had a passing experience with Mr. (Laurence) Folgelberg as I was one of the contest choir/vocalists and we would only rarely work with the stage band. They were both special men and are sorely missed by those of us who knew them.
Thanks Fil for the closer look at Dan. He is among the few absolute best singer-songwriters, with a voice and style no other person can approach.

I was scheduled to see him in Houston, but the tour was canceled due to his health. We lost a great one. Dan's message: get your prostate checked!!!

I never had the opportunity to see him play live, but I equate his talent on the guitar to that of Paul Simon and John Denver. I did see both of them play live. You can tell a lot of people liked him. Reading the other comments, I like him even more. I still walk around my house singing Part of the Plan, although not as much as I used to. He was one of the best singer/ songwriter/ performers.
My first wife and I saw Dan in the late 80s solo in the mist of our divorce! We left walking hand and hand smiling! We witnessed and felt feelings of our life and realized how much we loved each other thru his incredible lyrics! And no we didn’t change our mind about our marriage but it made our divorce so much easier and helped us make it easier on us and our kids! Dan was incredible musician and his music and lyrics were about real life and relationships! Very few musicians compare to his compassion and soul! Once again Phil excellent video and analysis! I've loved Dan's music for almost 50 years now. Ironically, it wasn't hearing *him* sing his songs that introduced me to them, but a trio of young men who played in a Howard Johnson's Rum Keg Lounge in Riverside, California who covered several of his tunes. After that, I was smitten. I think I have every album and CD he did, and still love them all. I was fortunate to see him live several times, both with, and without a band...absolute magic!! ❤

Got to give you props man - you have great knack for consistently presenting such a wide variety of musicians from a wide variety of genres and breaking it all down so nicely and thoughtfully. My favorite by Dan was Run for the Roses, he was commissioned to write a song for a big anniversary of the Kentucky Derby in the early 80's, I think by CBS. Anyway, it's a particularly beautiful song. It can bring a tear.
Try some of his non radio hits such as Seeing you again, Wysteria, and Netherlands, and The Reach.
Some of his songs make me cry. His songs and voice take me back to my "hippie" days

Epic first date with spouse was Dan's concert in 1981. I was floored by his singing and the word craft of his songs.
Phil, I used to go to a Bar that played records that were popular. Once I heard Dan's albums I was always in the bartenders face asking him to play the Netherlands album, it was in the days of romance, mystery and the unknowable. I would just listen and dream, dream, dream of that Perfect Girl who could fulfill the desires of my heart. Only Dan Fogelberg could articulate the yearnings of my heart. And, still to this day, no one has come close to the spiritual connection Dan created with my Heart! Miss him, only saw him once in Atlanta at the Fox. Great Show. Thanks.

I'm with you, friend. It was 1975, and Fogelberg was opening for the Eagles. I had never heard of him but I went out the next day and got Souvenirs. I had already been playing for a couple of years but that just cemented it for me. Fogelberg was a big inspiration for me as I set out on the path of being a songwriter, guitar and keyboard player, making the big move to L.A. An incredible journey, to be sure. But here is one of the strangest things that happened on that magical long and winding road. The last song on Souvenirs was There's a Place in the World for a Gambler. When I was a teenager I used to lay on my bed with my headphones and listen to that song, the ending with all the harmonies, all the voices and I would just be mesmerised by the whole thing. Years later l found out that my then girlfriend had been one of those vocalists, and if I listen to that song I can hear her in there. But yeah, learning how to play every song on that album helped me a lot in my early days of playing acoustic. From that countrified Morning Sky to the intricate finger picking on Changing Horses or Song from Half Mountain. As the Raven Flies, yeah just really great stuff and just that one album taught me so much. I assume you know Wysteria from the first album? Wow what are those chords I gotta know!! LOL!! Just his first few albums were a musical education, you know? Ah I've blabbed on long enough, I was just glad to see another early Fogelberg guitar playing fan here. Cheers and best wishes!
Been to hundreds of concerts but DF stood out among all of them for some reason. I guess he had a way of touching folks in the crowd as if he were singing to all of us personally. He had a great show and played many of my favorites that are mostly either B-sides or obscure titles that I connected to most. As usual Fil, fantastic job analyzing DF a most underrated performer that spanned many decades.
In his earlier years after he'd gained some popularity, he was known to be a real jerk to his fans & audiences. His cousin, a priest in Dallas, said in his later years he realized he was wrong fr that attitude. I know when I saw him hm in a small, intimate venue concert in his beginning, the audiences was singing along to a song and he stopped & admonished us saying if we were going to do the singing, then he was just going to leave. But I still love his music & Run For the Roses is one of my favorite songs ever.

Check out several other ballads: Colors Of Eve, Believe In Me, Whispers In The Wind, Longer, Scarecrow's Dream, and The Sand And The Foam...I want that last one played at my funeral...Dan's ballad writing was just transcendent.

The last time I saw him was 2003 Fall. My dear Dad had just died August 6, 2003. The venue was very small - Echo Basin Ranch -between Mancos & Cortez, Colorado. As a pianist I always loved his "To the Morning," etc. played on the beautiful black grand Yamaha piano he always played. It was a very small crowd & raining a little. We had just buried my Father on a hill top cemetry over my right shoulder. I could see it from the concert. I balled my eyes out. I fell in love with Dan Fogelberrg after seeing an 8-track clearance in a small store while driving from Dyersberg, Tennessee to Jackson, TN. I looked at the list of songs on the $2.99 8- track including Aspen, OldTennessee, etc. & bought it because I was living in ole Tennessee & wanted to live in Colorado. Needless to say,that day in 1977 I became a huge Dan Fogelberg fan. Home Free, Souveniers, Captured Angel, High Mountain snows - "Linda lost her lover in the early part of August" I saw him so many times at LSU to Red Rocks to the High Schoool Gym for the girls basketball team winning state in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Lived 60 miles from his Pagosa Home. Now I'm in Colorado for years.....I'm 60 now & he is a part of me forever. RIP dear one. Phil, thank you for always giving us so much more that just the song, but the story of the artist & their artistry

After Dan's death,his album Love In Time was released in 2009!!! Also,a live album from 1979 at Carnegie Hall in NYC was released not so long ago!Dan also released a great album in 2000,that was live with a stellar live band!-at times! Finally,a great tribute album was released not long ago,with many great artists covering Dan's songs! 1995 had Dan doing another album with Tim Weisberg.

Goosebumps on this one...as you said flawless guitar playing and on top of that the expression in his vocals is outstanding. Probably due to the fact that he's singing about such a personal story, in addition to his incredible natural talent. Loved your review of Dan & this beautiful song. I saw him several times between 1975 & 2003 and can tell you he was simply amazing in concert... both with & without his backup band. After he released this song, he played it during every concert, sitting in this chair, just Dan & his acoustic guitar. Still get choked up remembering that performance & those shows. He always said, before playing, that if he'd only written one song in his life, Leader of the Band would be that song. I sure miss him.... RIP Dan ❤️

My wife and I attended his concert at Red Rocks just west of Denver, CO. Probably back in the mid to late 90's. Just Dan and his guitar for 2 or 3 hours. Fantastic.

Sometimes Dan gets a bad rap for being “MOR” (Middle Of The Road/Easy Listening) but, as you say, he is flawless and underrated on the guitar. Everything is on time in terms of the fingers attacking the strings/fretboard at the exact right moment. Great storyteller as well.
Check out his song "Missing You" - he doesn't exactly rock out, but he comes close.
What's so wrong with being middle of the road easy listening? There's obviously a fan base?

NuclearGrizzly - I like a lot of things that were/are considered by many to be MOR. I wasn’t talking so much about my personal tastes as public perceptions in the Rock era when he wasn’t necessarily “cool” to listen to John Denver, The Carpenters, Kenny Rogers, later Chicago, etc. I listen to and enjoy a lot of what would be considered to be easy listening including the examples I just gave. Sorry if I gave the impression that I was dissing easy listening.

Beautiful song, and amazing vocals and guitar. The Antichrist of Music Sony. My most appreciated respected and loved teacher was my junior high band director John Acosta. He could motivate and teach people to be better than what they were by setting expectations higher than they really were capable of. He didn't tell them that they weren't supposed to be able to attain those goals. He did however believe they could and taught us to play at a level that was over our head. He gave me to drive for excellence that propelled me through most of my life. I can understand how this song about Dan's father reaches out from the heart so much.
You mentioned how he put a lot of his life into his songs. I saw an interview with him on MTV he once where other people would go to a psychologist, he’d write a song.
As you said, he was also talented in areas outside of music. He designed many of his own album covers.

Dan and I were at U. of Illinois at the same time. Didn't know him, but saw him many times at the Red Herring coffee house, and even once at a free concert in the dorm basement. Dan was playing mostly his own stuff, usually accompanying himself on guitar or sometimes piano. Dan was always a fine guitarist as well as a singer/songwriter.
