Larry Fogelberg was Dan's father and my brother's high school band teacher back in the 60's
That is sooo cool!
What a lucky man to have had him as the band teacher. Love this song.
Thanks, Ace, for doing one of my favorites. Dan has another song, Same Auld Lang’s Syne…another story telling song, which is great as well. And many more. Dan left college to pursue his dream of playing music. His father may have been a little disappointed, but he understood. Dan’s father was also a band Director for high school and college. He understood Dan’s need to want to go out and play his own music. This song was meant to be a tribute to his father. I’m glad you both liked it.
This song will make anyone who has lost their daddy and respected him will relate. A tribute to his daddy. And thanking him.
This is a tribute to his father...
The pride of my hometown! His father was well-regarded as a school band leader and educator. First saw Dan in a local rock band, but he was destined for bigger things. Lost too soon!
NO ONE writes lyrics like Dan.
Run for the roses is another of my favorites. Do not feel bad for tearing up. It just means the music is working. Haha.
Yes, absolutely!
The only thing that bothers me about that song is he says the colt grows up in "western Kentucky". The best thoroughbred breeding farms are in central Kentucky around Lexington, and always have been. (Guess where I grew up 😁)
A classic which was dedicated to his dad who was a high school marching band leader.Dan has over 50 great tunes, some hits and some that are oh so memorable that when you listen to one of his songs it will stay with you for your life. Other great tunes which vary in style are Power of Gold, The Reach, Old Tennessee, Run For The Roses and Same old Lang Syne! He has so many more that are worth reacting to!
I grew up listening to Dan Fogelberg. He has so many great songs that are classics.
Me too. This is my favorite.
This is one of my favorite songs! My dad passed away 2 years ago and I still get teary when I hear this song. Such a beautiful tribute to his dad.
Sorry for your loss. Anyone who doesn't feel something from this song has no feelings.
Another of Dan's songs that makes me tear up Is Run For the Roses.
His father was a high school band director in Peoria Illinois.
You have just touched the rim of a rabbit hole that will take you on quite a journey ❣️
This is about his father, who was also a musician.
The song is a tribute to his father as a musician and he is following the footsteps of his father's legacy.....
Wow this is an oldie thank you for posting❤❤❤
👍DEEEEEEP!!! 😊YEAH ACE, DAN DIED BACK IN ( 2007 )☹THIS WAS A HUGE HIT AND HE HAD SO MANY GREAT SONGS, JUST ANOTHERRR ONE OF THOSE 70'S STORYTELLER FOLK ROCK GUYS!👍
so cool that his dad got to hear the song and see it's success.
A great song! Great artist! Great reaction
Fogelberg has a long "o", like rose. Dan has some great songs. Same Old Lang Syne, Run for the Roses, Longer.
This WAS mainstream in my time….I’m 75 and still rocking!
Dan Fogelberg had some amazing work… Netherlands album and song are incredible. Also, songs on that album, sketches, and false faces are Great! Dan was know for playing most all the instruments on studio versions…
It's not 'Independent'. This is from the singer songwriters in pop and rock (folk rock) from these fabulous poets and songwriters. Dan is up there with the likes of Carole King, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Carly Simon, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, nd the list goes on. They were on the radio all throughout the 60s and 70s. So much music to go through. You can't really go wrong with any of them.
I love Dan Fogelberg. It’s such a shame that he died so young who knows what other wonderful songs we would’ve been blessed with.
I always thought of it as my father was the leader of our family (the band) even though Dan's father was a band teacher. It would take a lot for me to walk in my father's steps. But, I tried.
I think that sound was a combination of horns. I used to think an oboe was involved, but it may be too deep. I am absolutely not a musician, so basically, I have no idea. Peace, Love!!
You should check out "Run for the Roses". Beautiful song
Have this album. The man was a musical lyricist!!!
Whatever everyone else has said below, ..... I agree. Do more, please.
The popular song by Dan Fogleberg you’re thinking about is Another Old Lang Syne
Thought Ace had reviewed Fogelberg before. Apparently not! Rabbit hole alert. Very deep rabbit hole alert...

(I'm kind of a Fogelberg fan. I want The Sand And The Foam played at my funeral...)
☮️💙💙💙🔥😢
So, now. This is the first time for me meeting his partner. Let's see how he reacts to this song.
More Queen and Aerosmith~
Wow. His partner agrees a lot. These guys are such nerds.
For me, this is Dan Fogelberg's masterpiece. I love it more than I can say. Coming very close is his "Longer", also a masterpiece.
