Good job on presenting this tribute to Dan Folgelberg....... One of my personal friends, a great guitarist from Nashville, who married a girl from Massachusetts, who was my next door neighbor, with whom I went through all of Grade, Middle and High School together, janis, (to whom he was married for ten years) is the late Barry "Byrd" Burton, from Rogersville, TN. He was the original guitarist with "The Amazing Rhythm Aces Band." (Third Rate Romance) After Byrd ( his nickname due to his fondness for that Group) left The Aces, he moved to Nashville and became a demo guitarist/producer for The Meadowgreen/Tree Publishing Co. One day, when he returned from his lunch break, the secretary told him that Dan Fogelberg's Secretary had called and would he please call her back? Byrd was told that Dan had so admired his guitar work with The Rhythm Aces, and would he be interested in touring with Dan, to play for his larger audiences, which by that time often meant performing in stadiums. With Fogelbeeg, Byrd was earning approximately $1500 per week throughout a good part of the 1980s, and his success led to him playing for two tours in Dolly Parton's band and then touring win Nanci Griffin, who gifted him with a beautiful acoustic guitar, with his nickname engraved at the twelfth fret. A footnote to his relationship with his wife Janis, who sadly died from cancer in the late 1990s, is that they had met at U T Knoxville, where she was a college freshman in 1969, and he was playing guitar with an Allman Brothers type of southern rock band called, "Cowcatcher." He and Janis met in one of the clubs in which he was playing and began dating. After Janis suffered a traumatic on campus experience, she promptly dropped out of school and returned to live with her parents in their home in Beverly, Massachusetts. During the several years that passed, Byrd had begun touring with Fogelberg, and on a tour that brought Dan and his band to The Worcester, MA, Centrum Venue, which catered to audiences from Boston, Springfield and Providence, R. I., Fogelberg did something which was a rarity then and still into this day, and that was in The Boston Globe, which had featured an article on Fogelberg's appearance coming up at The Centrum, Dan had made sure that the name of each of his side musicians was printed in the paper. Janis' parents were subscribers to The Globe, and as she was reading that issue, she noticed her former boyfriend's name listed as a lead guitarist. On the afternoon before the first concert, as the venue was preparing for the sound check, and Byrd and the rest of the band were outside playing frisbee, Janis called and inquired about Byrd, and could she speak with him?!! That was the connection that led to a rekindling of their love relationship, which led to them being married and her moving to her new home in Nashville, in the Antioch Area. Unable to have children, and pursuing her life-long love of horses, Janis and Byrd bought her a beautiful Quarter Horse, which she rode for the ten years of their marriage. Following Janis' tragic and early death, in the late 90s, Byrd met and remarried a lady named "Candy" who was one of the makeup artists for "The Dixie Chicks." At a 5 or 10 year High School Class Reunion, in Beverly, I sat at the same table with Janis, but Byrd wasn't with her due to his demo session work which had resumed in Nashville. She told me that if I ever came to town, to look her up and that she would introduce me to him. When my wife Sharon and I moved to Music City in April of 1995, I followed through with Janis' invitation, which led to several years of my having a wonderful friendship with Byrd, and sitting in on several of his recording sessions. Sadly, Byrd Burton himself, died from Leukemia, I believe about 15-20 years ago. However, it was the kindness of Dan Fogelberg, and his insight and unselfishness in the Boston Globe Newspaper article, that led to Byrd and Janis having a beautiful 10 year marriage!! I saw Dan Fogelberg in concert in the mid-1970s. He played in a small, intimate theater at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He did an acoustic set, then played with his band. One of the best, most memorable concerts I've ever seen. He's one of my favorite artists.
I saw Dan around '75 in Columbus Ohio when he opened for the Eagles. I didn't even know who he was, but by the time he finished his last song I found myself just wanting to hear more of him and didn't care if the Eagles even came on stage. He became my favorite artist after that. I saw him several times after that. The world never completely got him.
A giant talent. Had not heard of Dan until late in 1979 when my then fiance were looking for a wedding song. We chose "Longer" Still married to the same fantastic woman. We ring true to the songs lyrics. We still love each other dearly.
I was lucky to spend time with Dan on a few occasions and I even visited him at his seasonal home in Little Deer Island, Maine. He taught me how to play the Reach, the key to getting the sound on a 12 string guitar was using a "dropped D" tuning. Just like with Hard to Say. He shared with me some great stories about meeting Georgia O'keefe. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was totally down to earth and humble. Dan had a nice sailboat called the Minstrel and he loved sailing Eggemoggin Reach. I still have a little piece of paper here in my scrapbook where he wrote down the title of a book he was reading in the late 80s and he recommended it to me. It was Harville Hendrix's "Getting the Love You Want."
So many great songs. Wysteria, Be On Your Way, Hickory Grove are three of the best ever written and sung. The Last Nail, Scarecrow's Dream, Give Me Some Time, The Reach, Sweet Magnolia, and Believe In Me are ALL CLASSICS. And love his recording of In the Bleak Midwinter.
Saw him in concert early 80's at an outdoor Ampitheater. He was just amazing and played for almost 3 hours. I remember he stopped for a short breather when he sat down at the piano and cracked a Budweiser. A great night ill never forget!!
He was a true gem. I was broken hearted as well. I’ve many ticket stubs, over decades of seeing him in different venues, from early 70s on. I’m grateful for the experiences. And have most of his releases from cassettes, to vinyl, to CDs. ;) Miss you Dan.💙

A great musical artist, and yes often underrated or dismissed as too "Sweet" or other B.S. by critics, Awesome , 1972- 1988 when he produced so many great albums and songs! He left us too soon, but I hope he is out there playing and singing on waves of celestial light in the hereafter!

I absolutely love his music and Souvenirs was the first album I ever purchased. Just an incredible singer song writer. Some of his lyrics are forever etched into my memory. I saw him several times at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and all the shows were awesome. From what others that knew him personally have said here, he sounded like a very down to earth person and great friend. I would have loved to meet him and he left us way too soon. Thanks for sharing your gift of beautiful music with us Mr. Fogelberg. May you RIP.
I began my singer/songwriter life in 1972 and was turned onto his first album. I enjoyed his work mostly throughout the 70's. In particular Netherlands was my favorite as I too had a strong classical background and the songs on that album spoke to me, having broken up from an engagement. He sure had a way with words. Fogelberg was uber talented. He is sorely missed. I bought Netherlands in HS. It was an amazing album. As I understand it, Fogelberg turned down an invitation from the Eagles to join to stay solo. I loved his music. Screw the critics.... And cancer sux....
Fogelberg was the real deal. Singer songwriter musician. Equally fluent on acoustic or electric guitar, and a fine pianist. Writer of introspective songs. And that voice - what a soaring tenor! I don't think he gained anything near the recognition he deserved; he just wasn't commercial enough. I remember hearing of his death on the radio at my office, and exclaiming "Dan Fogelberg just died!" And the response from my office mates was "Who?" I was fortunate to see him twice in concert: 1986 at Starfest in Dallas, and 2002 at Bass Hall in Ft Worth.
He played guitars and keyboards. Norbert Putnam played bass, Kenny Buttrey drums, Weldon Myrick steel and dobro, Farrell Morris vibes and percussion, David Briggs keyboards.
One of my favorites and saw him 8 times! Dan was a great musician, singer, songwriter and arranger. He was so versatile and wrote and performed everything from Classical, and Jazz to Rock, Country and pop!
My wife and I love the Christmas album. While a different style, you might also check out Christmas album by Bruce Cockburn's Christmas album. Dan is one of my all-time favorites. His lyrics are amazing poetry and the music is equally impressive. A true musical treasure.

I was given a pair of tickets to see Dan at the Fox Theater San Diego. This was mid 1970.s. I was not all that familiar but my girlfriend and I went to the concert. The first part of the concert was Dan with and acoustic guitar and piano. He was extraordinary, I was floored at how good he was. The second half was him with Fools Gold. They played so hard and were so tights, one of the best rock bands I have ever heard. THank you Dan, you are missed.
What a great salute to Dan! Nice job! I was going through some old CD’s one day and came across one of Dan’s. Not having heard of him before, I tossed it into the player and listened to the whole thing. Life happened, as it tends to sometimes, and I stepped away from music for some time. I was glad to find this video as I had no idea whatever happened to a man so talented. My condolences to Dan’s family, I had no idea he was gone until now.
One of my fave singers. Have most if his albums & on Cassette & CD too. Loved Home Free! Some exceptional songs on there! ‘To the Morning & Be on You Way’ take you to a different place. All time fave song is ‘The Last Nail’, however. Encapsulated my life, overall w/the other 2. Saw him in many venues over the years, including a surprise walk out of Tim Weisburg @ Union College in upstate NY, & that show took off for another hour! For 3 hours of ‘Gold’ on stage! And I was front & center! Will never forget that one! Decades later, I was able to see him w/my 2nd big love & was brought to tears when he did ‘Last Nail’, taking me back years prior, to the true, LOML.♥The one that I let get away....😔 He didn’t do that song much in several shows I saw. Nor the other 2 faves. But each time, really took me out of the arena. I was incredibly heartbroken when I heard he was ill w/prostrate cancer & he wasn’t going to make it. He did an interview & looked completely different. I was sick. He was telling men to get checked & not ignore the warning signs. Talked about his life, music, his wife he loved so & the Colorado Rockies, he found so much inspiration & solace in. I prayed so for his redemption, but he was very ‘spiritual’, over into Jesus. I guess I won’t know unless I see him there. Hope I do.💙 On his site, there were floods of tributes...Sure enough, I saw one from my greatest love posted. He too was/is an acoustic singer, & admired Dan’s talent. He sang his songs, as he did others, as well as his own. Seeing his tribute to Dan added to my sense of deep loss. Now, w/fond memories, I just hope I share God’s Great Glory in Heaven w/them both. ♥✝🙌 The narrator could have been better, but overall, a good post. TY

I don’t understand how anyone who knows about Jesus can be Blessed w/the time to reconsider His saving Grace & Mercy, & just not. But unfortunately, I do know people personally, who had time like Dan, & refused, right up to the end. Mind boggling. It haunts me still.... :/ I know in heaven, my memory of those lost that I know/knew, will be erased. As with everything else, it will be renewed.🙌 See you soon. In another of his songs he describes coming to a fork in the path of life and hoping the two trails would meet in some future. It was like making a choice between God's path and the world's. Satan has a way of blinding us and derailing us, even brainwashing us. OVERWHELMING VICTORY should be HIS over our souls and ours through HIM. Something's amiss.. We should be more than conquerors in God's righteousness and with His LOVE and His LIGHT flooding our path; as Jesus Himself described.
I met Dan at pioneer inn in Nederland Colorado and we all got together to help him move a grand piano he procured somewhere in boulder up to the living room of a house he bought up off of 119 Magnolia Rd. If memory serves from Chris Hillman.... Then came the album Netherlands which was a play on the town's name. As was his later song sweet Magnolia from the name of the road. we all used to hang out at pioneer inn including guys like Stephen Stills and most of the time we were blitzed out of our heads thanks in large part to Stills; we had the finest medications as well as the finest music jamming there, as well as a Caribou ranch recording studio🎹look up Caribou ranch Colorado music experience on yt for more. Great times I wish I could remember more of them🤔

Fogelberg died on the day my grandson was born (16 years ago). I did not know it for several days (as I was celebrating my new grandson) and grieved when I found out. I tell my grandson that he got the spirit of DF and encourage him to learn to play the guitar and sing. He took a few lessons and picked it up quickly but never got into it. Maybe one day he will and will learn some of DF's songs as a tribute to him. I still listen to Fogelberg a lot today and being from Nashville listen to Old Tennessee frequently.
It was circa 1992, at the " Old Pioneers Days" Festival in Colorado Springs, that the local rock band decided to take a break. They said: "Here's a friend who's gonna pay a couple songs." It was Dan Fogelberg. He set his stool up on the podium and after just a couple of notes captured the audience. People dropped everything they were doing and crowded to the stage. We were delivered a great performance!
i the mid-70's I worked in the herb shop section of the Green Mountain Granery co-op in Boulder Colorado. Dan came in quite often to purchase herbs and he was really into natural healing. He was a really zen nice guy who had a lot of curiosity about natural healing and I would have lots of interesting oonversations with him regarding herbs and herbal healing.

If you're interested in listening to the guitar playing of my late friend Barry "Byrd" Burton, you can check out the song "Third Rate Romance" by "The Amazing Rhythm Aces," who were featured on the ABC Dunhill Label. They won a Grammy for that song, and I believe it was Byrd's excellent guitar work on it and several other Ace's songs, that secured his place touring with Dan Fogelberg's Band in the 1980s. Actually the first 5 Amazing Rhythm Aces albums are all first-rate (see what I did there). James Booker, The Aces keyboard player was Nanci Griffith's band leader for over 20 years. That is how Byrd got connected to her. I saw Nanci many times and she is divine. Her passing recently hit hard. Speaking of the Aces, some of Russell Smith's solo stuff is well worth a listen. I could go on but will practice brevity:)
His dad, about whom the song "The Leader of the Band" was written, went to my high school in DeKalb, Illinois. There's a plaque at the school commemorating him.
For those who have never heard the bluegrass album, High Country Snows, I recommend checking it out. In particular the song, Sutter Mill, which I think is among his all-time best songs.
What about "Run For The Roses"? It is synonymous with the Kentucky Derby. I liked his other work as well, but "Run For The Roses" and "Leader Of The Band" showed his emotions and passed them on to the listener. It was a very sad day when he passed away. You did a great job with the tribute 🙂
Daymn! This took me back. I remember the Red Herring well. It was originally a small church, right on the edge of the University of Illinois campus. At some point (in the late 50s ?), the chapel began to be used as a performance space for local musicians, and the basement became a genuine "Beatnik" coffee house, an arrangement that lasted onto the early 70s. Despite it's small size, the venue became a favorite for several well known musicians. Champaign--Urbana (home of the U of I -- these days UIUC) is barely two hours South of Chicago, and something about the community there was very attractive to well known Chicago musicians -- folk, blues, rock, country, and jazz -- and it wasn't uncommon to find a famous musician from Chicago (and elsewhere) performing, unannounced, at one of the relatively small bars near the campus, or at the red herring. I never met Dan (we went to different High Schools together in Peoria), but I became a fan long before most people had heard of him. Thank you for this retrospective.
This was an absolute tragedy, like Gunther from friends. As a prostate cancer survivor it's a simple blood test to check PSA levels. Don't understand medical establishment opposition to early blood test, men...don't wait until your 50!!! Gunther died in his 40's with NO family history. Screw your doctor demand the test.

I saw Dan on a small tour through Dallas and years later at Red Rocks in Denver. He was a terrific songwriter & knew how to put together songs like "Promises Made!"

Gerry Beckley from America played guitar on, There's a Place in The World for a gambler. May have done some vocals too, i don't recall. If you listen to Monster by Beckley, on America's album, Harbor, i think you'll hear some similarities.
I worked in Hawaii at many TV stations, in 1979-1980 John Tonaki and I had a series called Video Concert on the Air- John had sold 50 TV stations the program then John approached Warner Amex Cable hoping to sell them, they rip us off and created MTV, after that I made a video version of Longer and sent it to Fogelberg, he never responded, that was the last I heard from him.

these narratives are generally extended with annoying unimportant info. Look at the title. That's what we expect to hear about. Not his birth and middle name.
The voice over is horrible. The commentator speaks wooden, almost like it was computer generated. No emotion, totally cold. He obviously read from a script.
Couldn't watch the whole thing. That stilted, mechanical narration is like fingernails on a chalk board. This trend of using computer generated narrations is sucking all the pleasure out of watching TH-cam.
I found Homefree in the old disc shop at South Shore Plaza, Braintree, MA in the early 70’s…before they added the roof! The wintergreen cover with his self portrait on the front cover and tiny photo of someone canoeing down a river in the mountains! I was certain it was a folk album and gladly paid the 50 cents when I took it from the sale bin. I was hooked!!! Played it constantly!! Its still my favorite! Love them all. So sad to have lost him at such a young age! Thanks for all the amazing music, Dan!! 💚🙏🏻☮️☘️
Oh wow! I used to go there! 😂 Haven’t been in years now, since I don’t travel between ‘the Capes’ anymore. I got Home Free on Cassette w/Captured Angle as a double whammy! At a drugstore. I also had HF on Cassette solo, but seeing it w/Captured Angel, knowing my solo was wearing out, I scooped it up excitedly! Later, I got several of his albums & CDs. Once cars gave way to CDs & no more cassettes, I had to keep hearing Dan in & outside the house, so CDs it was!👍 You don’t see him in stores anymore...at least I don’t. Was at a Borders a few days back & they still sell CDs. No Dan, however. Did get another Cat Stevens/Tea For the Tillerman, however. A classic of his, too. Just 1 there...from Germany, in a different, cardboard & recycle plastic wrapper. For cheap, so grabbed it. Dan, to me, was in a rare, slim category, all his own. I so hope he’s at peace now.🕊♥
Much of your information is incorrect. It's believed you got false information from Jean Mayer - shown in the video -- but the woman pictured is not Jean Mayer. No one knows who that woman is. Jean Mayer was never Jean Fogelberg and she published too much false information about Dan Fogelberg who never owned a home in Maine and who was never married to a woman named Jean. Mayer is a homeless woman seeking fame. Dan's studio was always in CO. You talk about Dan's creative slumps back in the 70s that just did not happen. He wasn't discovered by Irving Azoff. They were roommates in college, who partnered to form Full Moon Productions. He was not diagnosed with prostate cancer. That type of cancer does not go into remission. Someone needs to ask Jean Mayer exactly where she got information on a man she never knew. Mayer has him affiliated with people & bands he wasn't in. And, the last album Dan published was in 2001. Anything after that is bootleg. You mentioned Columbia but his music is licensed with Sony.
I remember him on some morning tv show hacking a Christmas song. It sucked. I kept thinking, Dude, what happened to you. Doing a Christmas record usually means the creative well is bone dry.
In the late seventies i was living in florida and i had my twelve string with me there i met many good friends and played with many great musitions and a good friend asked me one day if i knew any dan fogalberg i said who i havent herd of him and he sang some of the leader of the band while i fumbled through some of the cords just trying to fugure it out and so unable to get it right then from not ever hearing the song before i went down to leighz music and purchased the music to the album when i got home i got busy right away learning as much of it as i could i really liked many of the songs and some were getting some local radio air time so i worked on the leader of the band till i had it very much locked in well enough to perform it live when work vacation time came around i got to go back home to my folks house i had not been home in about three years and my second day home my dad asked me so when are you going to play us some music on that guitar i had just bought a double neck alverez yairi guitar and i had brought it home with me so i get it out and show it to my dad and he gets a tear in his eye just seeing my guitar dad was sick he had emphisema and was on oxigen from tanks so i not thinking start off with the leader of the band in honner of my dad and i played it for him and mom and there was not a dry eye in the house after my dad said it was one of the most beautiful songs he had ever herd im his life mind you dad had played guitar all his life as well in church with my sisters and us boys and he really was the leader of our band and it touched him in a way i could not have done with out Dan Fogalberg so it gave me a final moment with my mom and dad so precious I will never forget so im writing about it here for others to read about and it will be forever on record here thanks Dan for the music and those special moments Glen Waddell

Unable to have children, and pursuing her life-long love of horses, Janis and Byrd bought her a beautiful Quarter Horse, which she rode for the ten years of their marriage. Following Janis' tragic and early death, in the late 90s, Byrd met and remarried a lady named "Candy" who was one of the makeup artists for "The Dixie Chicks." At a 5 or 10 year High School Class Reunion, in Beverly, I sat at the same table with Janis, but Byrd wasn't with her due to his demo session work which had resumed in Nashville. She told me that if I ever came to town, to look her up and that she would introduce me to him. When my wife Sharon and I moved to Music City in April of 1995, I followed through with Janis' invitation, which led to several years of my having a wonderful friendship with Byrd, and sitting in on several of his recording sessions. Sadly, Byrd Burton himself, died from Leukemia, I believe about 15-20 years ago. However, it was the kindness of Dan Fogelberg, and his insight and unselfishness in the Boston Globe Newspaper article, that led to Byrd and Janis having a beautiful 10 year marriage!! I saw Dan Fogelberg in concert in the mid-1970s. He played in a small, intimate theater at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He did an acoustic set, then played with his band. One of the best, most memorable concerts I've ever seen. He's one of my favorite artists.
I saw Dan around '75 in Columbus Ohio when he opened for the Eagles. I didn't even know who he was, but by the time he finished his last song I found myself just wanting to hear more of him and didn't care if the Eagles even came on stage. He became my favorite artist after that. I saw him several times after that. The world never completely got him.
I saw him in Minneapolis in 2018 win the Super Bowl as Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
A giant talent. Had not heard of Dan until late in 1979 when my then fiance were looking for a wedding song. We chose "Longer" Still married to the same fantastic woman. We ring true to the songs lyrics. We still love each other dearly.

I was lucky to spend time with Dan on a few occasions and I even visited him at his seasonal home in Little Deer Island, Maine. He taught me how to play the Reach, the key to getting the sound on a 12 string guitar was using a "dropped D" tuning. Just like with Hard to Say. He shared with me some great stories about meeting Georgia O'keefe. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was totally down to earth and humble. Dan had a nice sailboat called the Minstrel and he loved sailing Eggemoggin Reach. I still have a little piece of paper here in my scrapbook where he wrote down the title of a book he was reading in the late 80s and he recommended it to me. It was Harville Hendrix's "Getting the Love You Want."
Nether Lands is a wonderful album.
So many great songs. Wysteria, Be On Your Way, Hickory Grove are three of the best ever written and sung. The Last Nail, Scarecrow's Dream, Give Me Some Time, The Reach, Sweet Magnolia, and Believe In Me are ALL CLASSICS. And love his recording of In the Bleak Midwinter.
Dan was an exceptional talent. I sure miss him.
Saw him in concert early 80's at an outdoor Ampitheater. He was just amazing and played for almost 3 hours. I remember he stopped for a short breather when he sat down at the piano and cracked a Budweiser. A great night ill never forget!!

I absolutely love his music and Souvenirs was the first album I ever purchased. Just an incredible singer song writer. Some of his lyrics are forever etched into my memory. I saw him several times at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and all the shows were awesome. From what others that knew him personally have said here, he sounded like a very down to earth person and great friend. I would have loved to meet him and he left us way too soon. Thanks for sharing your gift of beautiful music with us Mr. Fogelberg. May you RIP.

I began my singer/songwriter life in 1972 and was turned onto his first album. I enjoyed his work mostly throughout the 70's. In particular Netherlands was my favorite as I too had a strong classical background and the songs on that album spoke to me, having broken up from an engagement. He sure had a way with words. Fogelberg was uber talented. He is sorely missed. I bought Netherlands in HS. It was an amazing album. As I understand it, Fogelberg turned down an invitation from the Eagles to join to stay solo. I loved his music. Screw the critics.... And cancer sux....
Fogelberg was the real deal. Singer songwriter musician. Equally fluent on acoustic or electric guitar, and a fine pianist. Writer of introspective songs. And that voice - what a soaring tenor! I don't think he gained anything near the recognition he deserved; he just wasn't commercial enough. I remember hearing of his death on the radio at my office, and exclaiming "Dan Fogelberg just died!" And the response from my office mates was "Who?" I was fortunate to see him twice in concert: 1986 at Starfest in Dallas, and 2002 at Bass Hall in Ft Worth.
Actually Dan played every instrument on Home Free. He was a genius and can’t convey how very much I miss him. 💜
He played guitars and keyboards. Norbert Putnam played bass, Kenny Buttrey drums, Weldon Myrick steel and dobro, Farrell Morris vibes and percussion, David Briggs keyboards.

One of my favorites and saw him 8 times! Dan was a great musician, singer, songwriter and arranger. He was so versatile and wrote and performed everything from Classical, and Jazz to Rock, Country and pop!
"Run For the Roses" is my favorite Fogelberg track. Going to have to check out his Christmas album, as we approach the holidays!
My wife and I love the Christmas album. While a different style, you might also check out Christmas album by Bruce Cockburn's Christmas album. Dan is one of my all-time favorites. His lyrics are amazing poetry and the music is equally impressive. A true musical treasure.

I was given a pair of tickets to see Dan at the Fox Theater San Diego. This was mid 1970.s. I was not all that familiar but my girlfriend and I went to the concert. The first part of the concert was Dan with and acoustic guitar and piano. He was extraordinary, I was floored at how good he was. The second half was him with Fools Gold. They played so hard and were so tights, one of the best rock bands I have ever heard. THank you Dan, you are missed.
What a great salute to Dan! Nice job! I was going through some old CD’s one day and came across one of Dan’s. Not having heard of him before, I tossed it into the player and listened to the whole thing. Life happened, as it tends to sometimes, and I stepped away from music for some time. I was glad to find this video as I had no idea whatever happened to a man so talented. My condolences to Dan’s family, I had no idea he was gone until now.

Saw him in many venues over the years, including a surprise walk out of Tim Weisburg @ Union College in upstate NY, & that show took off for another hour! For 3 hours of ‘Gold’ on stage! And I was front & center! Will never forget that one!
Decades later, I was able to see him w/my 2nd big love & was brought to tears when he did ‘Last Nail’, taking me back years prior, to the true, LOML.♥The one that I let get away....😔 He didn’t do that song much in several shows I saw. Nor the other 2 faves. But each time, really took me out of the arena.
I was incredibly heartbroken when I heard he was ill w/prostrate cancer & he wasn’t going to make it. He did an interview & looked completely different. I was sick. He was telling men to get checked & not ignore the warning signs. Talked about his life, music, his wife he loved so & the Colorado Rockies, he found so much inspiration & solace in.
I prayed so for his redemption, but he was very ‘spiritual’, over into Jesus. I guess I won’t know unless I see him there. Hope I do.💙
On his site, there were floods of tributes...Sure enough, I saw one from my greatest love posted. He too was/is an acoustic singer, & admired Dan’s talent. He sang his songs, as he did others, as well as his own. Seeing his tribute to Dan added to my sense of deep loss.
Now, w/fond memories, I just hope I share God’s Great Glory in Heaven w/them both. ♥✝🙌

The song "Aspen - These days" describes Dan's early spiritual journey. In another of his songs he describes coming to a fork in the path of life and hoping the two trails would meet in some future. It was like making a choice between God's path and the world's. Satan has a way of blinding us and derailing us, even brainwashing us. OVERWHELMING VICTORY should be HIS over our souls and ours through HIM. Something's amiss.. We should be more than conquerors in God's righteousness and with His LOVE and His LIGHT flooding our path; as Jesus Himself described.

I met Dan at pioneer inn in Nederland Colorado and we all got together to help him move a grand piano he procured somewhere in boulder up to the living room of a house he bought up off of 119 Magnolia Rd. If memory serves from Chris Hillman.... Then came the album Netherlands which was a play on the town's name. As was his later song sweet Magnolia from the name of the road. we all used to hang out at pioneer inn including guys like Stephen Stills and most of the time we were blitzed out of our heads thanks in large part to Stills; we had the finest medications as well as the finest music jamming there, as well as a Caribou ranch recording studio🎹look up Caribou ranch Colorado music experience on yt for more. Great times I wish I could remember more of them🤔

Fogelberg died on the day my grandson was born (16 years ago). I did not know it for several days (as I was celebrating my new grandson) and grieved when I found out. I tell my grandson that he got the spirit of DF and encourage him to learn to play the guitar and sing. He took a few lessons and picked it up quickly but never got into it. Maybe one day he will and will learn some of DF's songs as a tribute to him. I still listen to Fogelberg a lot today and being from Nashville listen to Old Tennessee frequently.

It was circa 1992, at the " Old Pioneers Days" Festival in Colorado Springs, that the local rock band decided to take a break. They said: "Here's a friend who's gonna pay a couple songs." It was Dan Fogelberg. He set his stool up on the podium and after just a couple of notes captured the audience. People dropped everything they were doing and crowded to the stage. We were delivered a great performance!

i the mid-70's I worked in the herb shop section of the Green Mountain Granery co-op in Boulder Colorado. Dan came in quite often to purchase herbs and he was really into natural healing. He was a really zen nice guy who had a lot of curiosity about natural healing and I would have lots of interesting oonversations with him regarding herbs and herbal healing.

If you're interested in listening to the guitar playing of my late friend Barry "Byrd" Burton, you can check out the song "Third Rate Romance" by "The Amazing Rhythm Aces," who were featured on the ABC Dunhill Label. They won a Grammy for that song, and I believe it was Byrd's excellent guitar work on it and several other Ace's songs, that secured his place touring with Dan Fogelberg's Band in the 1980s. Actually the first 5 Amazing Rhythm Aces albums are all first-rate (see what I did there). James Booker, The Aces keyboard player was Nanci Griffith's band leader for over 20 years. That is how Byrd got connected to her. I saw Nanci many times and she is divine. Her passing recently hit hard. Speaking of the Aces, some of Russell Smith's solo stuff is well worth a listen. I could go on but will practice brevity:)

His dad, about whom the song "The Leader of the Band" was written, went to my high school in DeKalb, Illinois. There's a plaque at the school commemorating him.
For those who have never heard the bluegrass album, High Country Snows, I recommend checking it out. In particular the song, Sutter Mill, which I think is among his all-time best songs.
There are several gems on that album. It is a legendary album in Colorado...
What about "Run For The Roses"? It is synonymous with the Kentucky Derby. I liked his other work as well, but "Run For The Roses" and "Leader Of The Band" showed his emotions and passed them on to the listener. It was a very sad day when he passed away. You did a great job with the tribute 🙂
Daymn! This took me back. I remember the Red Herring well. It was originally a small church, right on the edge of the University of Illinois campus. At some point (in the late 50s ?), the chapel began to be used as a performance space for local musicians, and the basement became a genuine "Beatnik" coffee house, an arrangement that lasted onto the early 70s. Despite it's small size, the venue became a favorite for several well known musicians. Champaign--Urbana (home of the U of I -- these days UIUC) is barely two hours South of Chicago, and something about the community there was very attractive to well known Chicago musicians -- folk, blues, rock, country, and jazz -- and it wasn't uncommon to find a famous musician from Chicago (and elsewhere) performing, unannounced, at one of the relatively small bars near the campus, or at the red herring. I never met Dan (we went to different High Schools together in Peoria), but I became a fan long before most people had heard of him. Thank you for this retrospective.

This was an absolute tragedy, like Gunther from friends. As a prostate cancer survivor it's a simple blood test to check PSA levels. Don't understand medical establishment opposition to early blood test, men...don't wait until your 50!!! Gunther died in his 40's with NO family history. Screw your doctor demand the test.

Gerry Beckley from America played guitar on, There's a Place in The World for a gambler. May have done some vocals too, i don't recall. If you listen to Monster by Beckley, on America's album, Harbor, i think you'll hear some similarities.
I worked in Hawaii at many TV stations, in 1979-1980 John Tonaki and I had a series called Video Concert on the Air- John had sold 50 TV stations the program then John approached Warner Amex Cable hoping to sell them, they rip us off and created MTV, after that I made a video version of Longer and sent it to Fogelberg, he never responded, that was the last I heard from him.

I found Homefree in the old disc shop at South Shore Plaza, Braintree, MA in the early 70’s…before they added the roof! The wintergreen cover with his self portrait on the front cover and tiny photo of someone canoeing down a river in the mountains! I was certain it was a folk album and gladly paid the 50 cents when I took it from the sale bin. I was hooked!!! Played it constantly!! Its still my favorite! Love them all. So sad to have lost him at such a young age! Thanks for all the amazing music, Dan!! 💚🙏🏻☮️☘️

I got Home Free on Cassette w/Captured Angle as a double whammy! At a drugstore. I also had HF on Cassette solo, but seeing it w/Captured Angel, knowing my solo was wearing out, I scooped it up excitedly!
Later, I got several of his albums & CDs. Once cars gave way to CDs & no more cassettes, I had to keep hearing Dan in & outside the house, so CDs it was!👍

Much of your information is incorrect. It's believed you got false information from Jean Mayer - shown in the video -- but the woman pictured is not Jean Mayer. No one knows who that woman is. Jean Mayer was never Jean Fogelberg and she published too much false information about Dan Fogelberg who never owned a home in Maine and who was never married to a woman named Jean. Mayer is a homeless woman seeking fame. Dan's studio was always in CO. You talk about Dan's creative slumps back in the 70s that just did not happen. He wasn't discovered by Irving Azoff. They were roommates in college, who partnered to form Full Moon Productions. He was not diagnosed with prostate cancer. That type of cancer does not go into remission. Someone needs to ask Jean Mayer exactly where she got information on a man she never knew. Mayer has him affiliated with people & bands he wasn't in. And, the last album Dan published was in 2001. Anything after that is bootleg. You mentioned Columbia but his music is licensed with Sony.

In the late seventies i was living in florida and i had my twelve string with me there i met many good friends and played with many great musitions and a good friend asked me one day if i knew any dan fogalberg i said who i havent herd of him and he sang some of the leader of the band while i fumbled through some of the cords just trying to fugure it out and so unable to get it right then from not ever hearing the song before i went down to leighz music and purchased the music to the album when i got home i got busy right away learning as much of it as i could i really liked many of the songs and some were getting some local radio air time so i worked on the leader of the band till i had it very much locked in well enough to perform it live when work vacation time came around i got to go back home to my folks house i had not been home in about three years and my second day home my dad asked me so when are you going to play us some music on that guitar i had just bought a double neck alverez yairi guitar and i had brought it home with me so i get it out and show it to my dad and he gets a tear in his eye just seeing my guitar dad was sick he had emphisema and was on oxigen from tanks so i not thinking start off with the leader of the band in honner of my dad and i played it for him and mom and there was not a dry eye in the house after my dad said it was one of the most beautiful songs he had ever herd im his life mind you dad had played guitar all his life as well in church with my sisters and us boys and he really was the leader of our band and it touched him in a way i could not have done with out Dan Fogalberg so it gave me a final moment with my mom and dad so precious I will never forget so im writing about it here for others to read about and it will be forever on record here thanks Dan for the music and those special moments Glen Waddell
