    Excellent video, I have tuned my HW95 myself.I have drilled my piston to lighten it, added a 12mm short stroked kit, polished all internals etc etc. The result is a fantastic hunting tool.

    I have an 8 joule, break barrel air rifle.
    The spring has a diameter of OD=16.6 mm and it is very difficult to find an original or aftermarket spring of the same quality. I made a new thin wall piston to put a stronger spring with biger OD spring, but I couldn't make it light at original.
    In the Gamo piston I made easier the 15% of the total original mass and got a shot deviation of only 2m/s, less recoil but I lost the maximum shot speed. Before tuning I had 295m/s and now after lightening the piston I have 265m/s.
    You are right about everything you said.
    This type of exhibition requires a lot of effort, time and money.

    I've just tuned (repaired) my 1980 HW35E after noticing a substantial power drop. I used to shoot on a local farm back in the 80's but haven't done so for many years now so the gun is used purely for plinking pleasure and keeping down the rat population in the garden which seems to go hand in hand with the several bird feeders we have. It turned out the original 40 year old spring had finally given up the ghost and broken, 3 coils in from the breech end. The gun didn't seem any noisier than normal as it always had some mechanical noise. I ordered and fitted a TBT "tuning" kit with Weihrauch export spring which needed cutting down (easy). The gun is now as good as the day I bought it, slightly better in fact as the nylon guides in the kit have quietened it down. It now averages 10.5 ft/lb with good consistency is very nice to shoot and I'm dead chuffed with the result. I guess "tuning" depends on how far you want to go and to spend. I've had the gun from new and would never part with it but, personally I can't see the point on spending £££ on titanium pistons or additional tuning work when it will never be as quiet and smooth as a PCP. My Brother has a Gamo PCP with silencer, as accurate as the HW, quieter and the difference in shooting experience is night and day.

    Don’t cut the spring to reduce power, instead try a thicker grease or more of the grease used, on the prying and spring guide rod area. Lots of grease in that area should slowdown the spring somewhat to the point that it will become legal to shoot without having made any changes to the rifle.

    Looking at a titanium set up on my 80 as it's recoil is not nice went the tbt short stroke route but the messing to get it to fit took forever, went with the aussie short stroke seal way better but still not what I want but really like the reviews on the Paul short kit and it's the way I want to go.

    • @jamesbailey6946
      @jamesbailey6946  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Robert, I know what you mean with the hw80, I did the same trying all the home tuning routes. The problem is because the hw80 has a big 30mm piston it becomes really slow and lazy when you drop the power below 12ftlb. It was really designed for higher power. It is one of the more expensive for custom tuning because you really need to sleeve the cylinder and reduce to a 26mm glided piston. It will then shoot just as nicely as a highly tuned hw95, infact with the extra stock weight will be even nicer.
      I reccomend talking to Paul, he is the jedi of weihrauch tuning.

    What forces are applied to the piston sleeve? All of the axial spring forces are applied to the seal end. That leaves the radial forces from the seal end being out of square. Delrin deforms under pressure, so adding the delrin must not be seeing much force. So, with no axial force and little radial force on the piston sleave, why not remove most of the material from the sleeve by cutting slots and reduce the mass? (Am I missing something?)

    Hi Paul, Thank you for a great explanation on air rifle tuning. I found it really interesting and thank you for explaning short stroke, etc.
    When I was at school, my mates used to brag about making their air rifles more powerful, thinking more power was better. I was never allowed one back then.
    I dont think this is always the case as more power can alter the pellet accuracy. Compressing the spring to create more power, I would have thought a bad idea also.
    Like you said, people must know what they are doing. Its a bit like altering the tyres, springs and brakes on a car, then taking it around the test track, expecting it to outperform the original set up. Very able, clever people produced the initial vehicle. It would think it would be unlikely that with respect, some duffer with a meat pie in one hand and a sausage roll in the other would better it.
    Thank you, Paul.
    Best wishes, Ian.
