      He probably was. I cant begin to fathom how much pain it must be to be hated by the community he was a part of a series he loved. @@Senythril They didn't intentionally place a target on Tomm. They failed to understand the gravity of their fanboy reach. They made a video series as some random dudes on youtube that i'm sure, they didn't expect to break a few thousand views.
      Even had they expected it, from the viewpoint they had at that time... the knowledge we had access too, Tomm looked pretty bad. He did a few things that were not perceived very well. Now iv'e watched TRSHE two or three times over throughout the years, and it has been YEARS. Seven actually.
      and i can tell you that they did call out Konami, the called out several people. But Tomm took the focus, because Tomm put himself in that role. He didn't act like he wasn't in charge, quite contrary actually. And while i disagree with their information in 2019... 7 years ago it wasn't so cut and dry. So relax with the vitriol.

    As a game developer that has worked in complicated projects managed by big companies that care literally nothing about the quality of the product they are developing I think this kind of video is super necessary in order to make people understand that most of the time things aren't as they seem, that the actual developers of the game (programmers, artists, etc.) have very little or nothing to do with the big decisions that lead the project in one direction or another.

    I animated TV shows and animated 'reboots' of a certain beloved team of characters.
    I was paid by the frame, had my job threatened repeatedly, and received bullshit from the studio clients.
    On top of that, all the fans turned the rage of their 'childhood' being ruined on the animators-- Not the production company (Of which I am not allowed to call out.) in-charge of pinching every penny till yearly budget for the production continued to drop per season, with even higher quality expectations.
    Less than four animators remain from the original first season team.
    So the next time you see a remake/reboot/revival of your favorite show or game, and you cringe at the direction it has gone; get mad at the executive assholes that favour cheap, short and easy products. They usually are the ones responsible for fucking things up.

      ...PPG? Sounds like PPG. Could be wrong.
      You needn't confirm anything, you probably have some NDA you need to worry about. And that's fine.
      That being said I wouldn't ever blame an animator for a bad reboot.
      Speaking of bad reboots, whatever reboot you worked on couldn't have been as bad as the reboot for Reboot. A show in which the producer rebooted an unrelated show he worked on, and then said it's a reboot of Reboot instead. It's a bad reboot and a stealth reboot of something else entirely.

    • @k4yser
      @k4yser ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've seen plenty of writers, animators for reboots cherishing and embracing the very changes made to the original, which led to the reboot ultimately being worse. The biggest Red flag is the "adapted for modern audiences" line.

      I agree. I left a massive comment above so I don't want to repeat myself too much, but I do think it does touch on another potentially massive topic as the preservation of video game history is now a full blown serious endeavor. Its important modern culture, and yeah there's a very distinct story to be told I think on the Japanese side of things. I think there's a pretty big, yet understated imperative to preserve that culture, despite (or precisely because of) the difficulties like the one presented in this video. It's such an important, if not one of the most important areas of the overall tapestry of video game history and a big part of their own modern culture that I think there's quite a story there to tell and spread awareness of.

      Its actually quite a telling parallel to the early film industry, most films made before 1950 are just gone forever and nobody saw their worth in preserving. Lost to the winds of nitrate storage and abandoned or otherwise purposefully destroyed by fascist and communist regimes. Rather ironically it's piracy that better preserved these films and the same is true for games too. Anecdotally I would never have access to games like Earthbound without ROM sites

    I worked as a producer for a publishing company in Tokyo and a few years back I actually had the chance to send a pitch to Konami to publish the original Silent Hill games on Steam. As a lifelong Silent Hill fan, this seemed like a dream come true. When I was young, my dream was to work on a Silent Hill game in someway. In this way, I see myself in Tomm Hulett. Even though I think the Silent Hill games were mostly a disaster after 4 (Shattered Memories and Downpour were ok), it's clear that Tomm was doing the best he could in his position. Nothing came from my proposal to Konami, and maybe that's for the best given the current state of the company. Would still be great to get the original Silent Hill 2 and 3 PC ports on Steam someday though.

    • @EyeoftheU
      @EyeoftheU 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Regarding Other M, it is kind of hard to compare Hulett's role to Sakamoto's. Hulett was a small fish in a larger hierarchy, who just happened to be the most visible one (and the fact that he was an American working for a Japanese company probably limited him even further in what he had clout to do and not do). Sakamoto was a senior member of the old Japanese guard of Nintendo, had a lot of personal control over Other M as a project (he had final approval rights on the visual direction, the soundtrack, the gameplay, and the voice acting) and while he was not behind all the most decried decisions in that game, he was by all accounts responsible for quite a few of them, like the story and screenplay, especially how Samus was portrayed, the heavy use of the Wii-mote in lieu of the Nunchuck, and directing the English voice acting, despite not knowing English. (Unless you know something saying otherwise. I would legitimately be interested in seeing that.)

      Tameem Antiondes of Ninja Theory (I really don’t know how to pronounce his name) didn’t really do himself a lot of favors when he basically bashed the previous DMC games and characters. Admittedly, Ninja Theory was in a no-win situation when Capcom themselves were demanding all of the changes for DmC, but the completely poor PR (which was basically all about the controversy over all of the changes) doomed it from the start

    • @sofija1996
      @sofija1996 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I was around when the DmC debacle happened and Tameem drew a lot of vitriol and hate with some... questionable statements about the previous DMC games. Put it on top of overall miscommunication (for a good while we weren't sure if it's a reboot, spin-off or prequel, if it's considered a mainline entry or a separate game, will it replace the "old" series...), NT's track record up until that point (their games weren't exactly praised for deep combat mechanics), the overall design trends of that era, the very idea of "westernizing" a game series known and loved for its quirky Japanese aesthetics...
      I'm not going to defend people who drowned NT in a sea of hatred. It was wrong and the devs did not deserve it, even if some of them kept adding fuel to the fire and antagonizing the fanbase. We should have had more restraint and a better grasp of our emotions. With that being said, the PR, community management and media coverage of DmC was absolutely horrendous, doing the game a massive disservice and needlessly escalating the drama around it.
      Also, it was not about Dante's hair. The hair ended up being our least concern and the lowest point on the list of issues with the final product.

    First off, I want to say I love how your video transcends the subject matter into a universal issue that continues to happen to this very day. The thing is life is not so black-and-white, and we live in a complex world. It's easy to use a scapegoat and blame everything on a single person or thing. It's where a lot of conspiracy theories spread: through ignorance, lack of skepticism, and mob mentality. It's why I'm a huge advocate of critical thinking and skepticism these days. Unfortunately on social media, where a majority of people receive their information, facts and misinformation can look the same, be given equal value (when they're not), and one may not know the difference.
    But I digress. This is a subject that hits close to home for me as I've seen up-close the harm black and white thinking can have on others and including on the people who spread them. Massive props to you both! 👍

    Not everyone got the joke. She got a ton of angry mails and death threats over this, for well over a decade.
    Eric couldn't have known that, but an act of fraud committed by investors created a money black hole within the company, almost everyone had to be fired, and the game had to be completed regardless. A co-producer recently stepped forward and took the blame for the ill fated puzzle, said he had to throw out Jane's design and replace it by something they could implement last minute, and they all hated this decision, but didn't have an opportunity to fix it.

He has said the very foundations of the series story lines originally established were boring and stupid, that the game controls and combat system should have always been more "action" style, and that the only original game that was legitimate was Silent Hill 2. While Silent Hill 2 was a great game it was more of a one off, and a great free standing title alongside the actual Silent Hill story line but it was not the true foundation of Silent Hill as Tomm seems to believe. Tomm is human so he will always see himself as the hero when attacking and acting condescending toward critical fans and the victim when being attacked by those same or other fans, simply at the end of the day he was someone who should never been allowed anywhere near a property like Silent Hill.

Also, he's not taking credit for the voice-acting changes there, even though he said they were all his responsibility on his own blog. The whole source code thing is a poor excuse for why old games aren't re-released, and a poor excude for why Silent Hill HD Collection was botched. You don't need source code to port old games. The whole Silent Hill HD collection debacle could have been avoided if Konami had done what they did with the Metal Gear Solid HD collection and contracted Bluepoint Games for the ports.
    Bluepoint games ports old games using a retail copy of the game. Reason? They realize that even when "source code" is provided, it sometimes has bugs or differences than what's on the final retail disc. To avoid this, they reverse engineer what's on the retail disc and use that code to port the game to new consoles. They did this with MGS HD Collection, God of War HD Collection, as well as the Shadow of the Colossus/Ico HD Collection.
    Hell, we could have Panzer Dragoon Saga on new consoles if people would stop spreading the misinformation that it's not possible because of "missing source code". It's not needed!

    • @GamingintheAM0801
      @GamingintheAM0801 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Games like Silent Hill 2 and Panzer Dragoon Saga were specifically built to cater to the consoles they were originally made for. The PS2 was a quirky console, even for its time. Porting is difficult enough even with the source code, so reverse engineering, while it can be done, doesn't magically make everything fixed either.
      (The Saturn, in particular, was notoriously difficult to program for due to all the weird anti-piracy and anti-emulation measures Sega integrated into the console, as well as its dual processors, which was a new practice at the time. This is the reason Saturn games are rarely ported or re-released, and if they are, it's almost always a complete rebuild or remake rather than a straight port. The console was just a pain in the ass to make games for.)

While I agree that it was wrong to harp on Tomm as much as they did, it's also not quite fair to paint them as acting completely in bad faith or even lying when there is NOW more contrary evidence available. If you simply look at quotes from Tomm at the time, and read them without any bias or context, he still was often painting himself as in charge, or knowing better than the fans. I don't want to blame the victim but I think it's fair to say that when a person with no PR experience attempts to be the main source of PR, then it becomes more clear how he managed unwittingly to paint himself as a target for the ire of a rightfully upset fanbase.

      Ironic, after watching a video in which the whole thesis is to not scapegoat people, commentors seem to want to riot against Twin Perfect now. Maybe TP stoked those flames a bit too much. They certainly could have been more tactful. And I definitely think that they should probably ALL (not just Fungo) publicly apologize to Tomm. But I also wonder if this video is going to direct a lot of undue hate and villification towards Twin Perfect.

    There was alot more going on behind the scenes on the voice overs than you're letting on. If the voice actors had no grounds to stand on then there wouldn't have been a problem in the first place.
    I remember reading an interview where all the actors were sent new contracts for the HD release, and part of the reason 3 didnt have the old voices was because they couldn't get ahold of at least one person from SH3. Guy wasnt the only one holding SH2 hostage, supposedly they were all in it together, he was just the vocal one about it since he got alot more interviews. He gets scapegoated for that situation, when in reality it was just a legal mess.

    It really is easier to slap your frustrations with any piece of media on a single individual than what is usually a lot of small bad decisions from a lot of different people spiraling a project into disaster. It doesn't help things get lost in the noise, kept in the dark due to things like NDA's, or when people understandably lash back out making the situation even worse. But stuff like this is important turning the "villains" of yesterday into actual human beings. I wish we could have more stuff like this when things blow up instead of so long afterward.

When all the Infinity engine games (Baldur's Gate, Planescape, Icewind Dale) were remastered a few years ago, they couldn't remaster Icewind Dale II (released in 2002) because no-one could find the source code. It seems even some Western companies didn't care that much about properly archiving stuff.

      There is that famous one about Toy Story 2 almost being lost because of an oopsie and back-up tape tech issue, but being saved because a staff member was working from home and had a copy of all the files there. So easy to lose a part, which breaks the whole thing.

Tomm Hulett didn't deserve any of the harassment he got because of these things, which were all outside of his control. Twin Perfect's placing of Tomm Hulett as "The guy in charge" seems to be from quotes he's made where he himself said he oversees the product and had described himself has the one coming up with the project, hiring the team and "making sure each step of the way making sure the project is coming along how it should be" and at the end finalising everything including bug fixing with a QA, "pretty much guiding the project start to finish" so by that quote I understand why he was seen as responsible for a lot of the issues SH had while Tomm was working at Konami, in more recent times he's downplayed his involvement, so either this original quote (Voice in the static #4, shshatteredmemories.com) wasn't accurate or what he says now isn't. Though I won't speculate which is true I just wanted to show the information from Tomm in the past has been conflicting.
    (I'm writing this after he said he wasn't responsible for picking the dev teams for games to highlight, yes, Tomm himself has put conflicting information about his time at Konami, but I can't say which statement is accurate)
    Though I will point out in the example used from Twin Perfect about "Tomm Hulett changing SH" was entirely in context of the new voices and script we he has taken credit for being involved (which in my opinion he did do a bad job on) not that Tomm was also making the other changes and bugs. I don't see Twin Perfect was blaming Tomm for the HD collection using unfinished source code either, they were infact taking issue with the reason given, as pointed out in their video, Bluepoint, who were responsible for the God of War, Metal Gear Solid and Team Ico HD collections, made a point not to use source code so that their ports were feature and asset identical to the original releases (and presumably knew source code from games from the early 00s was hard to find). Again that blame is presumably on Konami if they're the ones who picked HiJinx to make the HD collection despite having no experience with ports/remasters and not instead going with Bluepoint who they had worked with in the past. Like I said Tomm himself said he was responsible for "hiring the team/s" on games he was associate producer on so who was responsible isn't cut and dry, though I still see Konami higher ups responsible for that.
    I will say equating Twin Perfect's "Why aren't people angry?" quote to "it's okay to attack Tomm Hulett and blame him for everything" as a massive leap in logic, you can be angry without personal attacks and harassment and people should be angry at the existences of the HD collection for people some people's first experience of SH2/3 which is ultimately tainted and in no way recaptures what the original games were.
    I do think not covering his involvement with the casting/redubbing of SH2/3 means part of the story of Tomm's work at Konami isn't shown here. Granted way too much blame was put on Tomm for things he had no control over by overzealous fans but there are creative work he did on the series (SHHSC new voices/script, SHDP's story he co-wrote and BoM's Story he wrote having to be part of the canon and how it changed parts of the original series's canon, etc) not represented in the videos. That might be outside the scope of these videos which are about debunking him as being the reason for SH's downfall (it always felt like Konami's fault for bringing out the series when it should have been left in peace despite liking some of the things Twin Perfect had to say about the series, just to give context they didn't make me blame Tomm for post-Team Silent SH games) though I will say, and this is more in hindsight but I kind of wish he had seen Konami was mistreating the series and accepted he'd never be able to fix the projects before release and not pushed for more SH games to be made or at the very least not have got involved, if only for his own good. He clearly had good intentions but he was ultimately setting himself up to fail.
    These videos were great and did highlight some more behind the scenes stuff I wasn't aware of, personally I still don't agree Twin Perfect was saying Tomm was responsible for the series downfall, more just that he was part of it, but I agree they used him as a scapegoat way too much and should have done a better job in that regard. Hopefully if you'd like to you can address this comment and the one on Part one regarding
    - Tomm's envolvement creatively with SHHDC
    - Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn's claim Tomm was planning to rewrite the script
    - Tomm's conflicting information regarding his level of control over the projects he worked on
    - Emily Lineham's settlement with konami for her voice being reused in SH3 add's evidence to the idea Konami's lack of written contracts with the actors meant they didn't own the rights to the performances and did owe dues to the SH2/3 voice actors for the Xbox/PC versions and had to require the rights for the HD collection.
    but besides that, these were very well researched and informative videos. :)

      I'll copy/paste some of the stuff I answered in your earlier comment so people don't think I ignored ya! :)
      "- Tomm's envolvement creatively with SHHDC"
      I don't know how else to address this, this was covered as thoroughly as possible in the videos, as well as Tomm Hulett's interview. Additionally, don't you think a fellow who was doing PR for a game and wanted it to sell well would naturally try to come off as confident about the games and his involvement? That's just the job decsription of PR, right there.
      "- Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn's claim Tomm was planning to rewrite the script"
      In regards to the last point about McGlynn's comments about "a whole new script", we've been told she misspoke or was simply mistaken. It was a slightly altered script with new line timings that was intended to match the lip-flap of the characters better, but it got mostly scrapped, except for the two line changes in SH3.
      "- Tomm's conflicting information regarding his level of control over the projects he worked on"
      See the first answer about how PR is about trying to instill confidence in an audience about a product.
      "- Emily Lineham's settlement with konami for her voice being reused in SH3 add's evidence to the idea Konami's lack of written contracts with the actors meant they didn't own the rights to the performances and did owe dues to the SH2/3 voice actors for the Xbox/PC versions and had to require the rights for the HD collection."
      Firstly, that was Thessaly Lerner. Emily Lineham played Lisa in the movie, Thessaly was Lisa in SH1. We didn't bring up Thessaly Lerner's (Lisa's) lawsuit because it is an unrelated affair that only seems related because TwinPerfect (and others) acted like it was. She actually WAS legally right, because her voice from Silent Hill 1 was reused in Silent Hill 3. Not a remake or a remaster, a completely new and different game for which she was not compensated. This is why the PC versions of Silent Hill 3 don't have her audio, nor Michael Guinn's line "It's being invaded by the otherworld..." Konami was actually in the wrong there, hence why Lerner got a settlement.

    • @TheDapperCat
      @TheDapperCat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I saw the other comment so no worries there :) (I also replied to those issues there)
      Sorry I should clarify, by "Tomm's involvement creatively with SHHDC" I meant his work on the casting and vocal direction of the new voices in the HD Collection which he has on more then one occasion taken credit for, including Part 1 of the video, though again I understand it's probably not within the scope of these video's subject matter.
      That is a good point about the PR and I agree with that, Tomm probably wanted to give fans the impression "someone was steering the ship" which I think backfired for him when he would later downplay his involvement, again I can't say for sure if his original claim saying he was in charge of guiding a project, coming up with the idea, hiring the team, working with the QA team and finalising the project was false or his later statements were, I just wanted to highlight the fact Tomm has put conflicting information out there.
      One more question is, not to pass blame per say but how responsible was Devin Shatsky on the games he was Producer and Writer on the games? (though for clarification he only worked as a writer on Downpour)
      Again I wanna say these 2 videos were great and did expose me to more nuance and information regarding the development of the SH games post Team Silent so thank you :)
