    Edit: It's been pointed out to me that Wesker saves Chris and Jill because he wanted them to fight the BOW's in the mansion (especially Tyrant) so he could collect combat data. It's a detail I forgot about since it's only explicitly stated in Resident Evil 0 (which I haven't played in years) and on a note in the RE1 Remake (which I tend to just click through as fast as possible when replaying it). My mistake...although if he hadn't intervened, he could have gotten some great data on the efficiency of Cerberus dogs.
    I'm incredibly excited for the RE2 Remake and the quality of this game gives me a lot of faith in Capcom to get it right.
    Thanks for watching my video! If you have a minute, please rate, comment and share it around. Every little bit helps!

      They do have a successful template, but the re2make is not made by the same people and around the same time, so there's ample opportunity to get it wrong. The template can be misread. Just like many times across numerous franchises a sequel or remake fails to understand what made the template appealing and copies it only only on the surface level and fails at the crucial details.

    • @nicodetonado

      Wesker's goal wasn't to eliminate all S.T.A.R.S members, but to use them as test subjects to the B.O.W (specifally the Tyrant) and collect combat data.
      Also, the movies you showed at the beginning weren't remakes, they were reboots. At least you don't seem to get remaster and remake terms wrong.

But there was much left out from monsters and weapons that made me feel disapointed. I feel it satisfied me because i played this game on hard mode. My first run took me over 15 hours because i was scrapping for bullets and knives. Its a totally different experience when the diffeculty is higher and its your first play through.

    • @barmbailey6934
      @barmbailey6934 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      ABSOLUTELY true. Both the RE2 and RE3 remakes were great in graphic detail and some dialog direction but CAPCOM failed in the execution in staying true to the original's. First of all they should not have favored the over-the-shoulder shooting style like in RE4-RE6, takes the unexpected out of the gameplay. I liked RE4 but that was because it was designed to be more action orientated. I don't care if the so called, "Tank Controls" were bothersome in the originals, cause I got used to them and heck later with 3D support the games became even easier with dual shock. Cutting enemies and key areas out of RE3 like the Clock tower, Raccoon Park, and Deadfactory in favor of the broken Resistance multiplayer, shortens the campaigns playthroughs as well as decision making scenes that would alter things. With the RE2 remake; making both Scenarios A and B similar without it effecting the other character's playthrough also, shortens that replay ability.

    • @barmbailey6934
      @barmbailey6934 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @Dominic dominic No, because it's not in general how you remake a classic videogame. Imagine if a remake of Mario 3 had key worlds around 3 or 4 of them removed in favor of just gaining more fans and less playtime. Guarantee you would hear outcry. But that never happens because Nintendo listens to their fans and would never sacrifice something like that. The RE1 remake is the only true one where nothing got cut.

      The reason this game looks so much better than the original is because they are using prerendered backgrounds. That means the environment you run around in isn't part of the 3D engine. It is a 2D picture someone drew and pasted behind the character. This only works because of the fixed cameras. If you tried to turn the camera, there would be nothing there to look at. Developers aren't lazy, you just don't understand game development at all.

    • @triggeredcheeseburger932
      @triggeredcheeseburger932 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That's a very objective statement based on a subjective opinion. I loved the original resident evils back in the day and they will always have a special place in my memories. However, the old static camera style gameplay just hasn't aged well and I can admit that, I understand it adds a certain level of tension in a sense (with monsters being out of sight but you can hear them coming and what not) but the overall feel it gives you is really quite dated (obviously) and it just doesn't really stand too well. Sure, the graphics are a lot better but it definitely feels like the gameplay suffers for a lot of people, myself included. I think the resident evil 2 remake is much superior as it stays true to the original but with a modern take on it (which in my opinion is what a remake should be, there's a difference between a remake and a remaster). I think this was a great remaster, however I don't think it did enough to warrant being a perfect "remake".

    • @leostenbuck4194
      @leostenbuck4194 5 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      @@triggeredcheeseburger932 "The camera aged well" is even more of a subjective opinion. The only reason RE was ever good was the lucky combination of fixed camera angles and tank controls. We know this because the formula always succeeded except for RE0. Modern controls only worked for RE4 and RE2r, rest was utter trash.
      RE2 remake is not a remake, it's a straight-up reboot. It's not familiar, it hardly has anything to do with RE2 1998.
      If you play RE 2002, it's incredibly familiar but expanded, improved, polished. If you play RE2 2019, you have no idea, zero, about what RE2 1998 was. Characters are vaguely similar in look but their story is quite different, so are locations, all puzzles, combat system, boss battles and even who gets to fight these boss battles.
      Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but RE2 to this day has no remake.

    At 9:32 you question why Wesker saves Chris and Jill. I can't remember which game it was but Wesker makes it a point that he wants to collect combat data for the new Tyrant monster that you face at the end of RE1. Who better to test the mettle of a bio-weapon than the elite STARS? It's why Wesker has you fight it at the end rather than just shooting you in the face after you piece everything together (though he does shoot Rebecca Chambers, not sure why. Surely she would be useful data as well, considering the events of RE0 but whatever).

      It isn't just those games. I remember reading an interview about Resident Evil 0 when it was a brand new game and the developers said the same thing. They didn't include the Crimson Heads because you're probably weren't going to be in the same long enough for them to show up. Unlike RE1, 0 also moves you to different areas quite often and unlike RE1, you are unable to revisit these areas after a certain point. Within the game's continuity, I think it has been explained that only different variations of the T-Virus create Crimson Heads which would explain why they don't show up in later games, not even in the Resident Evil 2 remake.

      I’m pretty sure this is right. Yes...no...yes...no.
      As a longtime fan, from the early 2000s, I thought no way would RE2 REMake surpass 2002 REmake’s overall experience. But... it’s really close. Too close. One is almost 2 decades old, and the other is just a year and some change. Two completely different ways of telling a game due to perspectives for the player, yet both REmakes achieve their desired effect...to completely surprise the player, old and new, by telling a scary story for dramatic effect. Not to mention the graphics for each are not what you would say at odds end, nor anywhere near the same. Each has their respective art style and presentation told beautifully and REtold in a way that pleases the senses of seasoned players and newbies alike.
      Overall it’s a toss up.
      Each one has their unique quality that draws you back for more. To pick one REmake over the other requires a certain feeling to wash over me and a certain desire to play either game which will come and go as the seasons.
      I appreciate the 2002 REmake for what it is: a genre-defining video game that has yet to be topped in my opinion. And of course, it is one of the last RE games to leave the initial 3rd person perspective intact before RE4 changed everything. I also am very pleased with the newer oh so polished RE2, as it incorporates nearly everything a horror fan or gamer could expect of a modern video game. While the new game also reveals the incredible possibilities of the future very well for how CAPCOM may choose to create and deliver their RE games. Period.

      RE1 remake is far better than RE2 remake. Original RE2 is still best RE2
      RE2 remake stopped being horror when player have control of camera.
      Only few jump scares which cannot happen if player is aware of its surroundings and game is too easy even on hardcore. I'm not even gamer I like just few games and I can say today games are all clones of each others. same camera, same controls same boring stuff with different paint
      Mr. X should be able to be defeated and then go for some time because having indestructible enemy that follows you is dumb. He is too slow and pathetic to make anything plus one flash granade give you time to run far from him and also player is faster than him even when near death. He was better in RE2 OG because player didn't know when he will attack so player always carried weapons and healing items and had to decide to fight or run. RE2Remake was worst decision ever because atmosphere of attack any second was changed by indestructible Mr. X which is background noise. Its clear that developers didn't know how to create tension without constant presence of Mr. X. He should have been like OG Nemesis to attack when nobody can guess but still can be defeated and must retreat for some time.
      RE3 remake ruined everything but I liked hospital, the fact that Nemesis can be defeated although it should be harder to do and UBCS members were expanded.
      Game developers are making dumber and dumber games ad now in RE they three times had enemy that follows you through game
      (I didn't play RE7 but I heard that father in that insane family follows player around, Mr. X that cannot be injured until the end which is dumb and now nemesis who looks and sound awful. OG Nemesis is only real Nemesis
      Game developers have no clue to make horror atmosphere like Shinji Mikami's remake from 2002 had or OG RE2 and RE3 with perfect music etc... They also removed lines what character think when pressing on something which removed another level of atmosphere.
      Gamers are not nor they will ever be character in the game. They just have control of them in that moment in their story. What characters thinks revealed lot about them and environment.
      Also puzzles are dumbed down to 0 and replaced with action. This is not even survival horror anymore, this is shoot and run, shoot and run, shoot and run etc...
      Did I mention shoot and run?
      RE2remake ruined characters like Kendo, Ben, Irons and Birkin who in sequence act like child who's parents didn't buy toy he wanted. OG Birkin was normal and cold prepared to defend G virus with his life while in Remake he is horrible. Irons had mystery because he acted nice
      Ivy creatures are replaced by tree zombies which was bad call.

    The Resident Evil Remake is a prime example of why there should be a balance of familiarity and differences when it comes to reboots or remakes of other properties. The Psycho remake failed because it was the exact same movie with color and different actors. Nothing new was thrown in, while Total Recall is so different, you might as well have seen a different movie. There were nods here and there to the original but it couldn't save it. Now being different isn't always bad, as it could probably have better characters or story than the original could, but the way it went didn't work. A movie that is so different to the point of it being really good is the Dawn of the Dead remake. That movie was better than the original in every way. No disrespect to Romero and his original movie, but the remake just had better characters, better story, better scenes. Everything. It seems that the RE2 remake is following the first remake where the balance of it's familiar but it's different as well. Seriously that damn Tyrant can follow you anywhere now. That's gonna be scary as shit.

    The first game's remake is a great example of a development team getting an opportunity to go back and implement things they may have had to cut out or otherwise abandon in the original. Crimson Heads are a notable point - they were (allegedly, at least) planned to be included in the original game but had to be cut from it. It's also an underacknowledged moment for the series overall lore in that they wrote Lisa Trevor back into the game, allowing her presence to finally tie together some things that were starting to get messy from a logistics standpoint for those players who were deeply entrenched in the series for the story it told across multiple titles. These new remakes are nice, that much is clear, but Capcom will never really be able to recapture what they pulled off so well with the first remake.

  • @aortaplatinum
    @aortaplatinum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think much of the reason REmake is beloved and is seen by many as the definitive version of the first RE game, is because it was made by largely the same team. Shinji Mikami wanted to do it because he felt he could more accurately portray his vision of the first game, using the far more powerful hardware of the GameCube as opposed to the PS1 and Saturn.
    When most remakes are done, it's an entirely different group of people than those who made the original. OG team members might be consulted or loosely worked with, but that's about it. A remake made in this fashion, with little to no input or direction from the heads of the original project, is a bastardization, it's the remake team loudly pronouncing, "I know better then the original creator, and this is the superior version of their work!"
    However, when a creator looks at their work retrospectively, and decides they can do it better now with current technology and an increased level of experience and skill, that almost always leads to a fantastic outcome. Most of the time. Some of them may go too far in a few places.

    Let me take you a few years back in time. A young boy who owned a Gamecube was hyped over the extremely popular RE4 and although it wasn't as fresh of a release anymore, he wished nothing but to get his hands on it so he asked his older brother to buy it for him on one of his trips outside the country. Brother came back and the boy snatched the game case off his hands just go be a bit disappointed by what he found inside. "Why is this 2 discs? this isn't what I asked for". Brother made a mistake and bought a copy of RE1 remake inside a box with RE4's cover art on it. THANK GOD for that mistake!! My friends and I couldn't wait to go play it at my house after school and it was all we'd talk about throughout the day until the bell rang. Before we knew there were playthrough videos on youtube, before I knew the english I know now, and before we even knew how to use ink ribbons in-game, each day offered a new challenge with the goal being to make it further than the last time. We were blown away by the graphics and at the edge of our seat not knowing what would come next as we experienced a game like nothing any of us had ever played before. We would take turns controlling Jill, come up with plans/theories/speculations of how the items would have to be used in order to make progress. The unusual controls just made it all the funnier and more thrilling as we tried escaping the zombies. I really believe our friendship back then strengthened significantly even more and it was all thanks to this game. I'll always be grateful to RE1 remake for providing me with wonderful memories I will die before forgetting. Truly a period of time that saw a huge impact on the person I am today. I really doubt I would've felt the same way if we had played RE4. Zero regrets! I LOVE RE1 REMAKE!!! And I pray the future to bring along the opportunity to relive those memories in VR someday.... I don't have my old friends with me anymore but I can always sit down, launch re1 and let it take me back to those golden times again and again :')

      Personally, I think the RE1 Remake and RE2 Remake both respectively did a good job at retaining or deviating from the classic scheme of cinematic fixed cameras, pre-rendered environments, tank controls, auto-aiming, and loading screens between doors...
      RE1 has the simplest enemy/boss encounters, plus a far more labyrinthian setting where you are invading the monster’s isolated territory. In my opinion, the fixed cameras and simple combat worked well enough for a game like RE0 or RE1, that wanted to focus almost exclusively on the cinematic horror atmosphere and resource management, rather than the combat itself. Monsters mostly hid around corners anyway, where an over-the-shoulder camera would not make them much more visible to me. The loading screens and the fact that almost every monster stays in their designated room helps each room feel like a unique self-contained segment of a gigantic maze.
      With RE2 onwards, even the originals were already getting more elaborate with their action set-pieces, Raccoon City was a much more expansive environment, enemies attack you in greater numbers, and monsters like zombies/Mr. X/Nemesis are now playing a more active role in hunting you. So I think it worked well to have a control/combat system, which gives you more direct control over the protagonist and allows you to freely look around in the huge environments. Plus, aspects like Mr. X chasing Leon and Claire felt more effective to me, in part because there were no loading screens between rooms, making the pursuits more seamless.

He needed to see how the STARS would do against the zombies and other BOWs to get any useful actionable data from it.

      @@TheRedRaven_ The success of the RE2 remake has nothing to do with whether or not Crimson Heads are good. Not that it matters. Videogames are unnecessary. Your insistence on treating your subjective preferences as objective fact is annoying. This conversation is stupid. Period.
      REmake 2 just uses other design elements to achieve the same kind of effect the Crimson Heads did, in any case.

    I love the original's opening.. it's actually pretty creepy before it goes to live action, and the uncensored version is freakin awesome, and quite gory

    Happy to report that today, at the age of way too close to 40, I finished RE Remake. I loved it. And your video as well. Cheers!
