Ion Vodă cel Cumplit (Ion the Terrible), who ruled Moldavia from 1572 to 1574, met a tragic end in 1574 after leading a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. His reign was marked by efforts to resist increasing Ottoman demands, including heavier tribute payments. Ion Vodă's defiance, including victories against the Ottomans and their allies, drew the ire of the empire.
In 1574, he was eventually defeated by a much larger Ottoman army, supported by Crimean Tatars. After a fierce battle near the village of Roșcani, he attempted to negotiate his surrender, with the condition that his life would be spared. Despite these assurances, he was betrayed. Captured by the Tatars, Ion Vodă was handed over to the Ottoman forces, where he suffered a brutal execution. He was killed by being drawn and quartered-a particularly savage form of execution where his body was torn apart by being tied to camels.
This act was meant to serve as a warning to others who might defy Ottoman authority, but Ion Vodă's resistance made him a symbol of Moldavian courage and resistance against foreign domination.

This is a harrowing description of the execution of Baba Novac and his priest, a tragic episode from Romanian history that took place in 1601. Baba Novac, the trusted general of Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave), was captured by enemies and suffered a martyr’s death in Cluj, being accused of treason.
After his capture, he and his priest were subjected to an extremely cruel execution. According to the description, they were stripped and handed over to the executioners (the Roma, who at that time often served as executioners in Transylvania). They were bound with chains above a beam that was placed on two supports, and underneath them, coals and wood were ignited. Their bodies were rotated on a spit to be slowly burned, and to prolong the agony, water was thrown over their wounds. The execution lasted for an hour and a half, during which they endured terrible pain until they finally died.
The priest, according to the account, remained patient and consoled Baba Novac with words of encouragement in Greek as he slowly weakened from the intense burns. This barbaric execution was an example of the cruel punishment inflicted on those who rose up against Habsburg power and their allies in Transylvania.
The death of Baba Novac remained in collective memory as a symbol of sacrifice for the Romanian cause and loyalty to Mihai Viteazul.
