It's incredible how badly the gold controller was received. I really thought it was going to be the next big viral thing and people were going to rip it off and do it to everything while watching it unfold. It was so incredible and interesting to watch.
Might have to do with the fact that gold is often seen as tacky in modern culture. I only ever see poor people who are trying to pretend to be rich buying gold and gold-colored things. A gold controller *reeks* of poor taste.
From Luke's "I gave myself a haircut without a mirror look" to "everyone is broke and probably unemployed, lets gold plate something" id say honestly these are minor youtube crimes at best haha the fact you can do this kind of retrospect amd see a meaningful difference says a lot. Not many creators have lasted so long, succeeded to such a degree, let alone experienced such meaningful growth, and its obvious LTT is a real family, Linus will be a hilarious grandpa CEO someday, can't wait to see it!

2018 doesn't seem like that long ago, in my mind those videos were like we have from LTT now, but man it's a real difference. I still think a watershed moment was Linus in the rain in Shanghai talking about the Intel X299 platform. It seemed like the moment LTT declared they weren't afraid to call out the big boys. You all look like you've really grown into yourselves. I love this channel and the people behind it, and I enjoy when you have genuine honest moments like this one talking about sponsors and how your dealings have changed.
@@lurch1539 Big boys in what capacity? Largest tech channel on YT? Perhaps, but there are alot of other big ones like MKBHD. LTT is big, but they are not Intel, Apple, or Google. Cut the melodramatic crap, there are no villains here. Just an independent private company with humans working that make mistakes like everyone else.
As a long time viewer (probably Langley days but I used a lot of NCIX vids to build my first computer) I gotta say I think I stuck around because the passion. Sure the channel is more pop than hard details but it appeals to me just fine. The early days made me feel like a friend who was being shared a cool tech toy that you just got. Linus and the team's passion is what drives this channel and LMG knows that. It's why Brandon's and Anthony's videos are so beloved in the comments. Not to mention the other great host's. Back in the day that passion was still there. Video production quality be damned. If Alex wants to show me (the audience) his crazy idea with using some unconventional material, recorded on his laptop camera I will probably watch it! Hell even the new guy showing us his coffee 'ritual' was bang on why this channel does so well. Doesn't matter the subject. If you show passion, the audience will connect. It's probably why sponsor spots & videos get so much hate too.
Agreed. I don't watch everything they put out (between all their channels, its a lot), and while not all of it interests me, i do still watch things i wouldnt otherwise, simply because i like the team and the channel. I get that a lot of the stuff they put out is just to meet their quota, to use a sponsorship, to generate some revenue, so honestly, its arguable that the majority of the videos they do wont be bangers, its just filler, but the bangers they do have are the best. Like the house project, the Intel Extreme upgrade or the production facility visits (or at least thats what i enjoy the most). i guess if anything, they put out enough content that im sure theres almost always something someone is excited to watch.
that fun stuff and feeling like youre a part of it while learning something is why im still here. dunno when I got here exactly but I remember watching these guys atleast from all the way back when the gtx980ti came out and was a sick gpu
@@michal_king478 I've been subbed basically since he launched but didn't really follow until the last year or so honestly. I remember watching him at NCIX. Followed a few different channels back when I was building my first PC.
Either they show real passion or they are good at faking it. No, I know they're passionate, but you cannot be genuinely exited in every video if you make videos all the time. Some acting is required. But their passion also shows from how much effort they put into most if not every video, in research et cetera.
I love how you can tell when Linus is about to talk about his sponsor, it makes me laugh every time he says something and you immediately know the next line is going to be “just like our sponsor” or something like that.

The premade sponsor spots are probably my least favourite part of LTT these days. I liked when the sponsor spot was part of the shoot and you could tell they were reading it off the prompter there and then. The cut away to pre-recorded just feels off most of the time. It used to actually be a segue into them delivering the spot instead of just saying the line and the tone never remotely matching between the cuts. I guess it makes things easier from a production point of view, but as a watcher, it just feels disconnected every single time.
@@KHudso To be clear, I have no issue with the sponsor spots themselves. I get why they exist, and good on LMG for trying to make them at least fun and interesting. Sometimes it's even something I might be interested in, if it's not a US & Canada only thing. My issue is only with the current method of delivery. The smarmy line with the cut to pre-recorded spots that never mesh with the delivery of the video to that point. It's jarring and feels so much more disingenuous then the former method of doing it as part of the video. I don't begrudge a company trying to make sure the money keeps rolling in. A company that doesn't ain't going to last long. It's all about the chintzy feeling nature of the delivery these days.

Gotta love 3 LTT OGs taking a stroll down memory lane together. I confess, I don't typically watch 'react' stuff, but in this case I'm a sucker for the sentimental vibes. Well done guys!
Honestly, the "Luke eating in every shot" bit is HILARIOUS
10:26 no i remember this. You were getting lit up in the comments for using a Titan & latest GTX GPU's (that at the time were hard to get and stupid expensive) as weights! To balance the motherboard on the box. People couldn't get over how out of touch it looked to use several grand in hardware as literally ballast :P
People get upset over the dumbest shit.
@@ConeJellos You should respect things. And it's literally just dislikes and comments. You're acting like they were sent to court or something.
Torque test the Ltt screwdriver and compare it to snap on etc.
@@ConeJellos It's all about perspective. At the time, those things were worth more than their weight in gold basically, so yeah, it would be something to see. I'd probably LIKE the video for that, not get salty, but I'm a rare individual.

Luke's laugh is contagious, and Linus' attempt at a Boston or New York accent is tremendously hilarious! I like these videos where you reflect on the past experiences, the good and maybe not so good, but it all leads and builds to where you are today. Great video, great channel!

It's incredible how badly the gold controller was received. I really thought it was going to be the next big viral thing and people were going to rip it off and do it to everything while watching it unfold. It was so incredible and interesting to watch.
I still really like the idea. Would love a whole gold Xbox.
I personally enjoyed the videos but I can see why the timing may not have been the best
It was a great project with great videos. Got no idea either?
'
Might have to do with the fact that gold is often seen as tacky in modern culture. I only ever see poor people who are trying to pretend to be rich buying gold and gold-colored things. A gold controller *reeks* of poor taste.
@@seanonraet8327 What did you feel was off about the timing?
Genuinely asking / I'm not trying to defend the video
From Luke's "I gave myself a haircut without a mirror look" to "everyone is broke and probably unemployed, lets gold plate something" id say honestly these are minor youtube crimes at best haha the fact you can do this kind of retrospect amd see a meaningful difference says a lot. Not many creators have lasted so long, succeeded to such a degree, let alone experienced such meaningful growth, and its obvious LTT is a real family, Linus will be a hilarious grandpa CEO someday, can't wait to see it!
It was SOLID gold. Not even plating lol
That controller was made of solid gold, if I remember right it was made of something like $100k worth of gold at the time.
@@Perceivedshift Yeah! I saw that video as well. IIRC it was a just before covid hit. His wife kept looking at him like she was deciding how and when to murderize him. He wanted to keep it, she wanted to sell it.

@Lurch Ah yes, AMD and Intel worth hundreds of BILLIONS, and LTT, that huge TH-cam channel worth Billions... get a grip.
@@lurch1539
Big boys in what capacity? Largest tech channel on YT? Perhaps, but there are alot of other big ones like MKBHD. LTT is big, but they are not Intel, Apple, or Google. Cut the melodramatic crap, there are no villains here. Just an independent private company with humans working that make mistakes like everyone else.
That was a great video. I don't even remember what all the issues with the platform were, but I remember that video, and how it kinda gave me chills.
@@AthanImmortal Just under a billion, it turns out. Linus recently revealed on WAN Show that there was a 9-figure offer he turned down last year.
@@itskdog 100 million is literally an order of magnitude lower than a billion lol
I miss stuff like pizza heating PCs, or sketchy heatsinks. Those videos are a lot of fun.
that fun stuff and feeling like youre a part of it while learning something is why im still here. dunno when I got here exactly but I remember watching these guys atleast from all the way back when the gtx980ti came out and was a sick gpu

The gold controller was cool by the way. Very stupid, but I liked it.
It’s always very humbling to look back in the past to see how far you’ve come. In LTT’s case seeing you guys grow from LMG to LTT was great. From a suburbs house to a complete office will forever be one of the greatest moments I was glad to be a part of albeit it, not directly.
This was a wholesome read. Thank you for sharing.

And from the looks of it, Luke has lost quite a bit of weight!
I actually really enjoyed and loved the gold xbox controller video. Getting to see how gold is worked on and why a tradesperson would take different approaches to different parts was really enjoyable. The fact that it was in LTT style and just silly (and tech-ish) made it even more easy to watch.

Can't believe I'm saying this but you're right. The segues nowadays feel a lot more jarring despite being more well-made.
Yep extremely jarring plus the condescending smile every time of “yes we know how annoying this ad is, thanks for the view & making us more money :) “
@@tyrannicpuppy absolutely I agree and see your point. They need sponsors to keep the channel going and pay their employees. I just find the segments jarring like you do and very irritating
