    Enchanters were and are heavily underrated because they’re not a damaged focused class therefore resist the mathematical capture of optimization. It’s hard to quantify their effect unless you have actually seen it.
    Essentially they are screwing with enemies turns, which is a defensive feature. In any campaign with a lot of non-combat interactions they are the best subtype IME.
    I do wish other subclasses had features like the enchanter which really tied into the subclass. Conjurer has good features, but they only sort of tie into conjuration school.

    Enchanter benefits from an artificer dip way more than other wizards. Basic gameplan is cast your big concentration battlefield control first round, then second round you use hypnotic gaze and sanctuary on yourself as a bonus action. Along with medium armor and shield proficiency, your defense is better than most martials, let alone wizards.

    • @mme.veronica735
      @mme.veronica735 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wouldn't necessarily need to be Artificer for this, if you changed around your ability scores Cleric might be a better option. Having healing word available for a pop up on a downed ally even when using Hypnotic Gaze could be more crucial than keeping wisdom low for more Dexterity

    • @jlstudio1050
      @jlstudio1050 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mme.veronica735I disagree, having con save proficiency is most likely better than heavy armor. You are a caster so you want good dex for initiative, meaning you are most likely to lose value when using heavy armor. Also heavy armor requires strength, unless you are a dwarf. Speed is important for this strat considering the poor range on hypnotic gaze.

    Great job. It's good to see how you change the build based on making "sub-optimal" choices. I love min-maxing, but there is definitely a role for making a character interesting. 5e is generally well balanced enough that taking away a small advantage doesn't gimp the character, and it can open up a lot of variety.
    Hypnotic gaze can make kidnap missions a lot, lot easier which is something fireball doesn't necessarily do....
    Thanks again, High Optimagus.

    Playing a bounty hunter with this would be cool. You charm them then grapple them to jail with no extra saves (edit: you would have to grapple them first then use your action on the next turn to charm them, then drag them with your move)

    Just use a disguise before doing friends. Hat of disguise makes friends OP. Disguise yourself as the enemy leader, use friends on everyone, start a riot without save throws.

      This is an amazing strategy and I've used it with great results ! Friends is, ironically, more useful to create enemies than, well... friends!
      Sadly, a low level Wizard doesn't have access to many spells and cantrips and is heavily reliant on some spells early game, but I'll grab it again with a new character I'm playing as soon as possible.

    Hooray the one I'm most excited for! Before I watched your guide on wizard schools and what not I already wanted to play an Enchantment Wizard as it, and illusion, sounded the most interesting and fun to me. Sure evocation is great for damage, but sounds a bit boring to me sometimes. Even a level 1 this guide is kinda making me feel a bit better about myself as it had a lot of what I was considering going for if I ever play a wizard. I imagine playing them as a spy, trying to work their way into human colonies and somehow weakening them from the inside and sending strategic information back home to prepare for an attack.

    17:00 with +2 Dex, light crossbow is better than a ranged cantrip, and shortsword + dagger is better than an up-close cantrip. If you can afford any of that, of course.

    I had the interesting idea of tying a loop that you throw over the creature’s head after using Hypnotic Gaze. It’s Incapacitated and so you shouldn’t have any trouble doing so.
    The idea is that you can then drag the creature with you and keep it within 5 feet. The idea then is to more easily take the creature with you away from everything else.
    Although you’d definitely have to ask your DM before trying this. Some would say you move at half speed, while others might say that dragging the creature would require your action as it’s not actually a grapple.

    What do you think if you make the enchanter only use enchantment spells and concept wise the enchanter liked to use others do his fighting for him and keep himself clean. Using find familiar to use the touch spells do the range Is 100. My first game is Thursday and I made same race as this enchanter. And that is my concept I'm doing. I think I only have like 2 damage spells total and he's starting at lvl 6

  • @FuelDropforthewin

    Getting in an intrigue heavy political game. Tag teaming my enchanter with a diviner for making the enemy malleable. Also, Hypnotic Gaze is awesome for "negotiations" since charmed creatures give you advantage on your charisma checks against them and there's no charmed creature style "they know they were charmed" backlash.

  • @gregkaye5583

    With friends cantrip and suggestion I'd definitely take disguise self or maybe even go for changling race. It's either that or a dip into warlock for mask of many faces also good with a charisma-boosted race. With spells like suggestion and mass suggestion, I'd take linguist as a feat and aim for languages that are known by types of monster that don't understand common.

    This character concept is obviously crafted with combat in mind, and other than a few level 1 rituals, has surprisingly little to offer the party outside of combat. Here is how I developed my enchanter so far:
    Ability scores: Str 10 (I hate not being able to clear 10-foot pits), Dex 14, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 12, Cha 12.
    Race: variant human, prodigy feat (proficiency + expertise deception, proficiency poisoner's kit, 1 additional language)
    Background: custom, with forgery kit, 1 language, nature, medicine, and criminal background feature.
    Level 1: control flames, mending, minor illusion, alarm, comprehend languages, disguise self, detect magic, fog cloud, shield
    Level 2: charm person, mage armor
    Level 3: misty step, Nystul's magic aura
    Level 4: +2 intelligence, fire bolt, arcane lock, invisibility
    Level 5: fear, tiny servant
    (it's a party of 5 with few combats - don't need to spend too many spell picks on combat spells)

    So very weird question, but what is your opinion on the new UA cantrip? Personally, I think it's a valuable tool akin to Chill Touch or Frostbite, but d8 Psychic and essentially Bane on their next save opens the door for the strong "Save or Suck" spells to make a return to prominence in 5e

  • @archmagemc3561
    @archmagemc3561 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mountain Dwarf feels like they'd be a good race for this, since they can get into heavy armor @ 4. Yeah they don't get any int bonuses, but you can get 16 in via point buy so thats not an issue and dex isn't as important since your wearing heavy armor. Still a bit more gimmicky,, but having an AC of 20 with basic magic items at level 4 is pretty good.

    • @Vernoan3
      @Vernoan3 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Highest you can go to in point buy is 15.

    • @rpranger6115
      @rpranger6115 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oddly enough, because neither Mountain Dwarves nor Heavily Armored feat give you proficiency in shields, you will get better AC by being a Hobgoblin with 14 Dex (you can start with 13 with point buy) and getting the Medium Armor feat. And Hobgoblin boosts your intelligence (of course, hobgoblins might have in-setting disadvantages that Dwarves won't)

    • @archmagemc3561
      @archmagemc3561 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rpranger6115 Very good point. Also saves an ASI upgrade. The race disadvantage thing isn't too huge if its a high magic setting, since glamor charms can just be used. Thats how I'd justify it to my DM if I wanna do a race like that.
