    It is interesting though to hear how the tactics change as we get each new enchanter ability. The mobility and layering defenses makes a lot sense, and the mix of spells that allow you to be effective when enemies are mixed with allies or bunched.
    An important thing that I think needs to be recognized is that hypnotic gaze comes after you have done web, or sleet storm or another spell. Flaming sphere is an action to cast, and then controlled with the bonus action, so you need an extra round before using hypnotic gaze.
    I feel proud of myself bc I have predicted so many of your spell selections, including the first lvl spells, misty step, mirror image, web, slow, sleet storm, synaptic static, flaming sphere, dimension door and charm/hold monster.
    Some of the specific tactics with those spells has surprised me. Super cool

      Another spell I had considered was thunderwave if there was a need for a lower lvl dmg spell, but i didn’t take it while picking spells in lieu of tasha’s.

    you can use the lvl 2 invisibility on yourself and use the gaze, because the gaze isnt a attack neither a spell. so it doent broke the invisibility, and you can also concetrate on a web or something else. i prefer dip artificer on lvl 1 and use sactuary on myself and gazy on the same turn

    • @thomazeblen

      Nvm. Invibility is concetration but you can 100% use the gaze while invisible

    As a DM, I don't see why Hypnotize gaze's effect (magically enthrall another creature) would go through the Resilient sphere (Nothing-not physical objects, energy, or other spell effects-can pass through the barrier, in or out, though a creature in the sphere can breathe there.)?

    Instinctive Charm states that you must choose to use the feature BEFORE knowing if the attack roll hits or misses.
    So you really shouldn’t be choosing Instinctive Charm if you already know the attack was a crit. Realistically you should be trying to use it before the attack roll is made.
    On the other hand, given the multitude of reactions for this character, you should be paying attention to the battlefield so that you know when it is in your favor to use the Instinctive Charm or shield.

      @@deadpan5104 Interesting idea lol. You couldn't do it to your hypnotic gaze target because they'd be incapacitated, but for a typical charm (especially suggestion) that sounds pretty reasonable.

    Zombies have 3 Int, just barely high enough for synaptic static to work. And they're pretty much guaranteed to fail the save.

    Does Enemies Abound aplie for twinning? I think it would be a good option, maybe better than Charm Monster.
    Another question: Can I use Hypnotic Gaze with lvl2 Invisibility spell, without breaking it? Would be a nice combination with a lesser resource cost!

    • @tyleremery7088
      @tyleremery7088 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The target of hypnotic gaze needs to see *or* hear you, so you can still use it while invisible as long as the target can still hear you.

    I love the idea of having your critter move it. Like your kittah trundling it forward.

    Commenting before having seen the 3rd part. You could take dominate person later. After all it works better with the higher level slots for the increased duration, assuming of course you see it more as an out of combat spell (which I do).
    Your 5th level slots are a bit too crowded still though, with wall of force, hold monster and synaptic static. At least more than your 3rd level slots. Would it be worth it to take fireball instead of synaptic static for that reason?

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there are some tough decisions made here.

  • @matthewallen9776
    @matthewallen9776 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On the topic of Instinctive Charm and metagaming, do you also believe that a Paladin saving Divine Smites for critical hits is metagaming and poor form? My counterpoint would be that your character could certainly tell when they're about to be critically hit or deliver a critical hit. I imagine seeing an ax swinging right for the neck, or catching the opponent off balance and defenseless with an attack. I feel like metagaming is poor form in that a player uses information about a scenario that the character wouldn't otherwise have in order to make decisions to gain a tactical advantage. I would argue that if it's reasonable enough for a character to perceive a critical hit, then making a decision based on that is justified.

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think that would be metagaming because the decision to add a smite is made after you know the results of the attack. Instinctive charm is supposed to be before. If played by the book, the DM would roll the attack in secret, then you would announce using instinctive charm and you would never even know if the attack was a hit, nevermind a crit. Tends not to be the way we actually play though.

      @@TreantmonksTemple oh gosh. I missed the ever so obvious "you must choose to use this feature before knowing whether the attack hits or misses." 😂 That's embarrassing. Edited for spelling

    • @binolombardi
      @binolombardi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are quite a few different abilities in the game that require some knowledge of the roll beforehand.
      Instinctive Charm
      Beginning at 6th level, when a creature you can see within 30 feet of you makes an attack roll against you, you can use your reaction to divert the attack, provided that another creature is within the attack’s range. The attacker must make a Wisdom saving throw against your wizard spell save DC. On a failed save, the attacker must target the creature that is closest to it, not including you or itself. If multiple creatures are closest, the attacker chooses which one to target.
      On a successful save, you can’t use this feature on the attacker again until you finish a long rest.
      You must choose to use this feature before knowing whether the attack hits or misses. Creatures that can’t be charmed are immune to this effect.
      -So you need to see the creature.
      -you need to have a reaction available.
      -You need to know that it made an attack specifically against you
      You also seem to assume that all rolls by the DM are hidden, which certainly does not have to be the case.
      There are certain class features that require knowledge of the game forcing meta gaming to an extent.
      Take portent for example.
      Portent
      Starting at 2nd level when you choose this school, glimpses of the future begin to press in on your awareness. When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers rolled. You can replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by you or a creature that you can see with one of these foretelling rolls. You must choose to do so before the roll, and you can replace a roll in this way only once per turn.
      Each foretelling roll can be used only once. When you finish a long rest, you lose any unused foretelling rolls.
      Technically to comply with portent, the player needs prior knowledge of every single attack roll, saving throw, or ability check by all creatures within its sight at all times... rather tedious especially when take into account that the wizard can change it without actualy knowing what those things are.
      The bards are in a similar boat. Cutting words requires knowledge of rolls without knowledge of what the roll was or if it was a fail or success.
      Combat inspiration for the AC component of the ability actually requires sight of the attack roll.
      The fighters indomitable feature requires knowledge that it’s saving throw roll actually failed.

  • @Adurnis
    @Adurnis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Don’t worry about Instinctive Charm metagaming; it specifically says you must decide to use it before knowing if it hits or not, so by the time the crit is revealed, it’s already too late to use it.

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Officially that's true, I just find that Crits tend to be announced before checking if you are using instinctive charm (if the roll is hidden at all)

    • @Adurnis
      @Adurnis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch. Yeah I can see how that’s a problem. Generally for stuff like IC, I put the onus on the player; the first time they forget, I take it easy on them and let them use the ability in question, but from that point on I say they need to jump in and say they’re using it before I roll.

    I'm really liking this build. I also thought of using Animate Dead, mostly because it's thematic for any evil wizard, I see using it to extend the humiliation of my thralls beyond even dead (being carried in a chair on the shoulders of your dead enemies) and when you suggest it for moving the resilent sphere it's decided. Also being a Yuan-ti, I'll look to use poison in the my archer's arrows.
