I'd love to see a video on how the dragon flights all fit together. If this is a metallic dragon, then it must be one related to the Metallic family, right? But I've also heard about Adamantium Dragons which are actually a type of Planar Dragon. I'd love a video that just goes over the categories or families of dragons. I call them "flights" but I'm not sure if that is even the right term or not. One last question, aren't all dragon tails prehensile?
It is way more complicated than most people think, not only are there the inherited traits and obligations, but dragons are also part of social networks, the real movers and shakers of those are the various Xorvintaal factions, there are also different religious factions and groups concerned with taking control of this planet or that... they are both a species of reclusive monsters, and also a transdimensional civilisation of advanced prime material beings.
"Flight" is also the term for a group of dragons, so ostensibly correct the way you're using it! And the name of an amazing animated movie from somewhere in the 70s-80s.
21:46 haha, This part reminded me of a well known anime trope where a strong older fighter will say some variation to a younger challenger, "You're 100(0) years to early to challenge me, whelp!"

Well that's one way to deal with a dragon. Send it to our back yard and have it become a tactical nuke only to watch in horror as we send a few intercontinental missiles in return and completely wipe the area. To those living in Toril our world must seem incredibly bizarre and in some cases terrifying.

The four armed dragon casting the spell, loved the two skeletons just kick'n back watching their master doing he's thing. That breath weapon is mind blowing. This video and the orange dragon video are definitely favorites. Thanks AJ, you have a wonderful day!
It honestly feels like this video is stepping into the next level of learning about Toril as it is today, the setting suddenly comes to life as you realize with growing excitement, just how unprepared the amazing Sword Coast city states really are for the Dragon Princes.
I find it hilarious that planshift into the wrong plan with the wrong set of physics and a Orium Dragon can just blow up. Kind of makes me think of the teleporting Squid from Watchmen.
If the orium dragons are preparing for what they feel is the inevitable return of dragons to dominance, could this result in a civil war among dragons? Obviously evil dragons and those neutral dragons, who see subjugating humanoids as "for the greater good" & for the humanoids own best interests, would likely go along. But what about good aligned dragons & neutral dragons who are partons & advocates of peace & freedom for all? Also, what about prism & force dragons? Where would they stand or is it so far beneath their notice that they wouldn't really care?
I would imagine that the epic dragons would be deciding among themselves whether or not the rest of the dragons were slaves or get to be agents. Let the free (?) lesser dragons decide what to do with the tiny primates
Considering it’s taunts, would it have more respect for something like an ancient lich, or an old elven arch mage who might eleven have greater knowledge or the ancient and time? Or since they are not dragons, would they still not respect them?
This was a very interesting video, as I've never heard of Orium Dragons before; I was one of those "skip 4e; long live GOOD Forgotten Realms" folks, and so this was neat, but honestly, I think my favorite parts of this were the Ancient Empires references. I've been a mostly focused fan of FRCS since the late 90s; it's the setting I've always most preferred, and as cool as "current" lore is, the wizard in me always enjoys snippets of story from those aged, long passed kingdoms, often supported by fearsome, maybe even twisted magic, that no longer exists today. Things like Netheril, Imaskar, Narfell, and the like typically make me perk up in videos.😊 One of my own favorite 5e supplements is Heroes of Baldur's Gate, and what I love most from that is Epic Backgrounds. While Awakened Clone is my favorite, bar none, another one is called Last Emperor, I think. I don't actually like it, based on ots mechanics, but the idea it represents is wonderful. The Empire is doomed, and they know it, but they will have the last laugh. A scion is placed into suspended animation, to awaken later, and reclaim their birthright...but they don't wake up, and instead sleep for centuries. Once they do revive, they are a holdover of forgotten legend, and practically an amnesiac anachronism, for how little they'll know about the world they now find themselves in, though they still want to achieve their dream. The idea of some time-spiraled noble, from one of these dead, and sometimes maligned, legendary nations, trying to figure out who they'll be, and what they'll do, I'd great, and as someone who at least feels they have a "good" working knowledge of what Netheril, Imaskar, and the like were like, it could be fun to play something that actually knows what others only suspect, and only read in books, possibly written by dubious authors. I'm sorry for that pointless ramble; in between stuff, right now, so a chance to actually BS is always one I seem to take, but on topic, these dragons are cool! Again, I never heard of them, before, and I like how they do some different things, compared to others, like summoning an elemental out of their breath, and using it both to fight, and ad a maniple, because why TK when you command cloud kill to serve?😊 I also appreciate the number of values you gave out; I could easily compile the stats, if I needed, and use this, without having to poke through D&D Beyond, or the like. I even got some "radiation of the Wyrm" vibes, from White Wolf's Werewolf: the Apocalypse line, when you started mentioning polonium. Thanks for the fun video, and another neat draconic mindset!

"Deep Imaskari"? I thought my idea of linking demiplanes together to get around the range issue of a single mythallar was new. oh well still going to do it
@@AJPickett That's exactly what popped into my head. I'll have to homebrew something for it. Like a faerie dragon that ascended to an Archfey or Archdruid, or even came across some kind of wellspring of power. Now it has the full size and might of a metallic dragon, but the temperament and abilities of a faerie dragon. That, and now I have to make an erratic and hyperactive Cocaine dragon. I already made a Silicone dragon as a Valentine's/April Fool's joke encounter.
I've never heard of this one, seems like a fun dragon to run. I'd hit my players with one if I wasn't already planning a fight against a moon dragon and a side quest with stellar dragon.
such good timing, just started DMing a new campaign and one of the main NPCs is a youngish Orium dragon polymorphed into a human form. He has built up an organisation to build up his hoard and gain power, after being chased out of his old lair by another dragon. He is biding his time, building his power, and the player characters will make excellent pawns in his plan to kill the usurper who stole his lair.
I cannot begin to say how immensely appreciative I am of this and all of your other videos. This one in particular will be influencing my group over the next few months. Should be interesting interactions as the group has to play middle-man between an Orium Dragon, who needs to see some jungle ruins restored, and a Gynosphinx, protecting the powers contained within. With a Black Dragon in the background, who simply wants all the rumored treasures contained in its deapths, while also manipulating the group's wizard in a couple ways. (Bring me wealth and food, and I might teach you something. Also that tumor I gave you won't violently and painfully kill you tomorrow.) Whichever way it goes, this information will be exceptionally useful! Thank you!
@@AJPickett The short: She is a young (young adult) black dragon named Iteshk Oontanx. Using the twilightrealm translator it roughly translates to Sower of Sorrow. The long: She stole from her grandsire a spell of his own design called the Infusion of Black Essence. Which gives places a tumor in a "willing" humanoid creature. The tumor is perimant and can have three effects on the creature at anytime of the caster's choosing. Errupt: 18d6 acid damage per round for 10 minutes, bypassing resistance (acid in direct contact with internal organs). Pain: 2d6 to 6d6 acid damage for 1 round (get back to work). Blessing: Target creature is turned into a half black dragon, but tumor remains. She has used this spell four times now. Two dopplegangers who are now mascarading as the town's mayor and assistant stripping it of wealth. One upstart bandit chief who suspiciously shares the same surname of the mayor. And finally, the group's enchantment wizard who's cover is a traveling entertainer. Iteshk is permitting him to study her dragon fear so long as he regulary provides her with interesting meals, and wealth. (the wizard is a purposfully temporary character until this group joins charater(s) from a prior group) Iteshk inadvertantly stole a map along with the scroll which hints towards a divinely guarded treasure hidden away in fallen ruins. Here they will meet Zezhuanth Kartah (Ancient Discovery), an adult orium dragon, who has recently arrived at the ruins and is in the process of discovery and early restoration efforts to reach the inner most halls. Iteshk has dispatched Ulius the Unbelievable (PC wizard) to retrieve the "treasure". He plans to bring back the trueasure and a meal all in one go.
I spent the entire video wondering what real life metal were the orium dragons based on, the end was a very nice surprise I personally would add some radiant damage by proximity to its presence, a simple d6+2 for each round spent within 5 ft of it perhaps, but it is regardless a fascinating thing, love this series on dragons you've got going ill be expecting the next one anxiously! Edit: Random question, are there any more radioactive dragons? Like do thorium or uranium dragons exist within the multiverse?
I've gotta use this monster, the Drakewarden ranger will be thrilled to chill with a red-gold snake dragon. Meanwhile the warlock will be horrified that their gentle host is made of Pulonium.
Since they have a flare for grand and archaic lairs you'd think they'd have to contend with other powerful neighbors, or possible former tenants looking for revenge. Kick a mummy lord out of his grand temple and you better bet his devotees will be looking for blood for generations. Although having grand trappings means you get to show off your guards and servants. You're not a boss Orium dragon unless your lair is guarded by a pair of Bronze Serpents (Monster Manual 2 pg. 40) made of gold and platinum heisted from some Yuan-Ti temple.
Is there anywhere we could get this in text ? Would love to be able and include this like the lost text of an explorer the party could find in a library or lost book
Absolutely, I provide the full script text to my patreon, which is only a minimum of $1 per month for full access to all the scripts with my videos (and soon some extra perks from my Spring store which will make that dollar a real bargain).
I think one thing that could be done to improve the flow of these videos is smoothing the otherwise abrupt transitions between in-character explanations from the perspective of a character and out-of-character explanations from the perspective of a player.
I just love pointing out, in such a dramatic fashion, that the D&D Worlds only LOOK like Earth, they are alien dimensions with different laws of physics. I mean, forget magic for a moment, there is no atomic radiation on Faerun.. heavy metals NEVER decay down to lead, they just stay supermassive isotopes forever and radiate... *MAGIC* .
hmm that last bit makes me wonder if there's some kind of "uranium" dragon out there , potentially something with a nuclear fallout/extinction based breath weapon...although i guess that's just describing godzillia isn't it?
pure, logical deduction. There are no radioactive materials in D&D, yet in the multiverse, Earth exists and it has different laws of physics because radiation exists on Earth, but there is NO magic at all (that's why the Imaskari could so easily control the Mulan people abducted from Earth, the Mulan had no ability to use magic, that ability has been basically bred into them over time), also, there is no Adamantite on Earth, yet we have these super heavy metals which are radioactive as hell that doesn't exist on any of the worlds of D&D that have magic present (which is basically all of them). So, yeah, if you bring an Adamantine weapon to Earth? It's probably radioactive.
A dragon that turns into a Nuke depending on the planet/universe it may accidentally drop in? Lol ok That's a total party kill, or a good scene to describe through a scrying orb.
Something struck me about midway through this video; I have always felt about 4th edition the way I feel about certain choices and characters put into the reboots of my favorite videogame franchise. Namely, the offensive thing was the wholly new *trappings* the characters and lore were placed in: rebooted plotlines, wildly and offensively different mechanical systems, etc. Removed from those trappings, there's a *lot* about those characters and choices that's really, really cool. I adopted the Raven Queen as soon as she was *suggested* , sure, but getting to see the other neat little bits and pieces I never read far enough to find is a delight.
Just because something is different that dosen't mean is bad. Yes that dose sound super obvious but I believe most often we don't realise ower bias against the quality of a reboot/continuations of something, do to a combination of it being different and people not likeing change, so we tend to judge it unfairly.

Honestly it’s why he clicked until I read it again.
That's probably another feywild dragon species
Read it right, myself, but my brain immediately went to "Opium Dragon!? Hmmm..." And now I'm trying to figure out how to design that 🤔
May homebrew an opium dragon now...make it the smallest out of all dragon species but due to the effects it could have it wouldn't need size.

I never really got a good hint from the 3.5 monster manual on how to run them.
hmmm, okee dokee, added to the list
@@AJPickett Thanks, really want to use them in my game but again: the MM II doesn't give me a lot of information on how they behave other than just glomming onto someone and taking them over. You covering them will open up some plothooks.
It's amazing to me how MANY dragons have been created in the history of D&D, is there a timeline of all of them? Thank you AJ!
The sage raises once more!
"Deep Imaskari"? I thought my idea of linking demiplanes together to get around the range issue of a single mythallar was new. oh well still going to do it
Well, that polonium came out of nowhere...
I'm glad that refers to the video and not my actual life
Paw-like talons?
Certainly a passing resemblance to a dog.
#UnderstandableConfusion
Love the video Loremaster Pickett! The conversion at the end was AWESOME. But I've always thought a dragon was a living nuke anyway.
Great video as always, loved the intro.
Next is the dragon who listens to Future, spits cough syrup, has pearlescent purple scales, and has roars that sound like vaporwave.
The Opium Dragon.
The Codeine Catastrophe, the Percocet Plunderer, the Norco Nightmare, the Vicodinous Venom, the Sizzurp Serpent...
I really enjoy the information about the dragons. I also enjoy the continued narrative about your travels on Torril.
I definitely didn't read that as "Opium Dragon" when I clicked in excitement and curiosity.
That would be the Faerie dragon
@@AJPickett That's exactly what popped into my head. I'll have to homebrew something for it. Like a faerie dragon that ascended to an Archfey or Archdruid, or even came across some kind of wellspring of power. Now it has the full size and might of a metallic dragon, but the temperament and abilities of a faerie dragon.
That, and now I have to make an erratic and hyperactive Cocaine dragon.
I already made a Silicone dragon as a Valentine's/April Fool's joke encounter.
Great video. I appreciate the incharacter storytelling rather than purely reading out of stat sheets.
I've never heard of this one, seems like a fun dragon to run. I'd hit my players with one if I wasn't already planning a fight against a moon dragon and a side quest with stellar dragon.
It seems like the perfect dragon to bait out the player's expectations of a red dragon.
such good timing, just started DMing a new campaign and one of the main NPCs is a youngish Orium dragon polymorphed into a human form. He has built up an organisation to build up his hoard and gain power, after being chased out of his old lair by another dragon. He is biding his time, building his power, and the player characters will make excellent pawns in his plan to kill the usurper who stole his lair.
I really love the story integrated lore!!! The world seems so much more vibrant when told this way!!
Also that tumor I gave you won't violently and painfully kill you tomorrow.)
Whichever way it goes, this information will be exceptionally useful! Thank you!
My pleasure! Sounds like a fun black dragon, got a name for it?
(the wizard is a purposfully temporary character until this group joins charater(s) from a prior group)
Iteshk inadvertantly stole a map along with the scroll which hints towards a divinely guarded treasure hidden away in fallen ruins.
So by the same logic… is there a Plutonium Dragon lurking out there too? (Shudder)
Notifications from AJ are literally the best
Are these the inspiration for the Otataral Dragons of Stephen Erikson's Malazan series?
Probaly not but malazan is BADASS
Didn't know about these guys either, I'm always glad when you hit a monster that's entirely new to me! Thank you!
Can't wait to use an orium dragon when my group explores some ancient ruins!
Thanks for all you do AJ!
Let your friends know I say hi
I spent the entire video wondering what real life metal were the orium dragons based on, the end was a very nice surprise
I personally would add some radiant damage by proximity to its presence, a simple d6+2 for each round spent within 5 ft of it perhaps, but it is regardless a fascinating thing, love this series on dragons you've got going ill be expecting the next one anxiously!
Edit: Random question, are there any more radioactive dragons? Like do thorium or uranium dragons exist within the multiverse?
24:19 Bismuth?
Try finding a chunk of polonium to photograph
Very excited you're finally hitting on some deep imaskari lore!
You have a pretty good story telling ability, have you thought about putting pen to paper?
Yes
Extremely good video!!
40) made of gold and platinum heisted from some Yuan-Ti temple.
all of this is excellent
Holy crap that book is such a good one, easily a great addition to the collection
Here we go perfect Sunday a dragon vid and now I have to see if orium is real in our world
Oof, you may not like the answer to that question....
@@AJPickett I figured it wasn’t
Orium may not exist here but polonium certainly does. Polonium is Very very deadly element that if ingested results in death.
@@AJPickett Say no less
Proceeds to happily yeet himself into the patron page. Thanks!
I have misread this dragon as opium dragon for awhile. Until I finally watched this video.
Well, a Faerie Dragon could be considered an "opium dragon", eh? Euphoria breath weapon.
I think one thing that could be done to improve the flow of these videos is smoothing the otherwise abrupt transitions between in-character explanations from the perspective of a character and out-of-character explanations from the perspective of a player.
I see what you mean, and I would like to accommodate that critique, its valid, but... its not my style :)
Love these stories
LoL I read it like "Opium Dragon" for a moment XD
I sensed a level of mischievous joy when you said "Polonium", like a child with a draw 4 in UNO
*MAGIC* .
@@AJPickett OH SNAP!!! Thanks for clearing that up bro😃
hmm that last bit makes me wonder if there's some kind of "uranium" dragon out there , potentially something with a nuclear fallout/extinction based breath weapon...although i guess that's just describing godzillia isn't it?
Eldritch dragon, Arcane dragon, hmmmm...
I'll admit, I never expected a DnD lore video to end with "Surprise! It's polonium." As cool as that was, where did you find/come up with that?
pure, logical deduction.
I keep scrolling past this and thinking the video is titled Opium Dragon.
Hobbit adventures on my day off. Yay! Been waiting on this one sage great work! 🖤
Relax, put your feet up and grab yourself a tasty beverage. :)
Yay!
4e did have some cool looking dragons. The cobalt dragon was my favorite.
Great video AJ. Cool dragon
Thanks Chris!
A dragon that turns into a Nuke depending on the planet/universe it may accidentally drop in? Lol ok That's a total party kill, or a good scene to describe through a scrying orb.
So the dragon has a stand
Incredible dragon!
