Thank you Brant! This is now the must-see BMX wheel lacing video of all time. The other thing worth mentioning is how to bend the spokes properly while going under.✌

Instead of doing this on a table, you could make a simple hanging jig for your rims. I realize most people won't be lacing their own wheels, but if you own multiple bikes, doing your own work saves money. You would need a minimum of three padded hooks spreading out from the top and outside. Preferably spaced by rigid media. This keeps the inside of the rim accessible at all times. Hung closer to eye level, this would make wheel building not only more comfortable, but more efficient.

I've wanted to build a set of rims for a while but it seemed so daunting. Thanks for making it make sense!

My first job was lacing rims because I knew different lacing patterns (mostly straight, 3x and 4x) and because the guy that ran the shop hated doing it... I loved it because I met a lot of cool people and worked on some really, really nice bikes. 😁👍
Edit: My best advice is to do a couple crosses to hold the rim and hub in place... It helps keep everything in place just to make it a little easier, well at least for 24 or 36 hole hubs but 48 hole hubs were just a nightmare. LoL

The hardest part of successful wheel building is remembering the critical beginning steps and getting that first spoke placed correctly. The valve hole to hub logo alignment might not effect performance, but overlooking this gives you nothing to be proud of. Once you know this small detail, you won't be able to ignore it whenever you look at a wheel. I also recommend Ali Clarkson's tutorial on building strong wheels.

Absolutely! The valve hole thing is so simple it’s like why not right?

I like this method, the only thing I would change is after you do the first 9 spokes, run the 10th backwards and cross (if you dropped the spokes down, pull this one up), this will twist the hub to line up at the schrader valve and hold it there for the duration of the build. When you get to that step/spoke later, just make sure it's tucked if needed.

Hi, thanks for the video . . Maybe i missed some info, is it all your stuff specification at 1:27 . . length of spoke, ERD, etc?
Im asking because im trying follow your video but after 3 cross in a half side, the spoke is too tight, im afraid my spoke will break . . i dont know maybe my spoke is too short 😅
    Thanks for the answer 👍

I’d always recommend carbon fibre spokes. Saves a good amount of grams on your bicycle

Drive side 180.0mm non drive side 184.0mm for 3 cross for that wheel build 👍🚲💨

Are bmx rims front and rear specific and how do I calculate spoke length

  • @joec.4825

What Abt extra wide rims w/ the wider spoke hole spacings? Is it the same difference or is the corresponding hole different ( criss-cross) ?
Trying build up rims now. Wud be extremely helpful

Same as what I say in the video if you’re doing 3 cross normal lacing

  • @hopenavajo1391
    @hopenavajo1391 ปีที่แล้ว

There is no shorter or longer spokes when it is ordered and it is not specificied. The manufacturers makes spokes of the same length.
