You have no idea how OCD I've become as well from watching all your wheel truing videos over the years. Ya da best Brant plus the Park Tool truing stand looks SOLID!
Just built my first wheel using your video I made a time-lapse and shouted you out on Instagram the most helpful part was when you said to keep Zen when I have to take it apart cause I messed it up lol 😂 I still have to finish true ing them but I got them laced right and they look sick! Purple G Sport Hub silver spokes Purple Nips and Chrome Relic rim to run brakes.
I know it's a bit different (...well, a lot) but today I spoked my hub-motor (from a buckled rim) into an MTX39 26" brand new rim... I've laced up all 39 spokes, tomorrow I'm finishing off the final stages of gradually tensioning up all the spokes and then (somehow) I'm going to put the rear wheel back on my E-bike build and turn the bike upside down and try my best to make sure the wheels as straight (not bent side-to-side, and no bad wheel hop up n down) by using the tie-clip truing technique I've seen others use... Sadly I don't have a wheel tru-ing stand so I know it won't be easy - but so far I'm super happy to have just spoked up the hub-motor into the new rim.. Thanks for the video!!!! I've watched a few others too to get as many tips and ideas to help me get the job done right.. Wish me luck please, I'll probably need it 😅👍
Excellent video, thankyou!!! Watching this will really help me later today in the final stages of tensioning up my e-bikes new MTX39 26" rim (yes, i know its a bmx vid but i loved bmx when i was younger and rode freestyle everyday, im 51 and still love bmx)... I reecently got a buckled hubmotor wheel on my e-build so i bought a new stronger rim to put my hub motor into from the buckled rim... Today I got all 36 spokes laced in (finally, after several duff TH-cam vids that didn't help at all, but a few did and i managed to do it - phew!!!). Now later today I will be tensioning up all spokes and flippimg my bike upside down and usung the tieclip trick to check for lateral / hop movement... Thankyou, your vid was just the type of concentration information i needed, 'cos im not ocd but I want it to be absolutely perfect as it can be ... Thankyou dude!!! Great vid!! Wish me luck 🤣👍
Yes yes yes yes yes yes I freaking love you dude I have an electric bike and I did not have any idea how to draw a tire today and I was watching literally about eight different videos of a bunch of different dudes that were complete idiots and they had no idea how to explain this in layman terms and I was just sitting here getting super pissed off at my bike on these spokes and I tried to take them and remember okay and on the right side clockwise loosen them and I was getting so mad and I just let the videos play through my headphones and finally I heard your voice going on explaining it in perfect words and then it all just clicked in my mind and it understood everything and it made it so much easier thank you so much
very good process!...great presentation...thanks for sharing...just used this process on a 100 year old motorcycle wheel and couldnt believe ho wmuch easier it was than the way I used to do it!...thank you!
Thanks for the wheel building videos, Brant! I laced up my profile/hazard combo. Set the dish with a framers square and trued it with zip ties on my frame/fork!
I agree with most of what you say. The one thing I do is to actually overtighten the wheel as I approach close to true radially and laterally. After reaching this point I true both ways only by loosening spokes. This gives you super fine increments and allows the spoke to unwind itself. Tightening the spokes to get close to true and tight will twist the spokes. I have been building wheels, hundreds or more, since 1982 and I guarantee this method works deadly.
I have laced so many wheels.. but cannot true for shit.. I drop it off at Erik’s bikes every time !! I just wanna watch the whole process and be hands on.. good job tho man!! How killer to make your whole bike from scratch.. it’s a great feeling.
I have several 20" fat tire e-bike and a trike. I have two tension meters, one a Wheel Smith, and the other a recently bought one from Amazon that is pretty much the same as the Park one. The problem I got, is not being able to find enough OPEN spoke area to clamp the tension meter to. I wonder if they make smaller versions of this tension meter?
It’s a tight fit on bmx wheels but there is a way it works. Just is the only way so you have to do it exactly the same on every spoke or it doesn’t fit. I haven’t researched if there’s a smaller one but it kinda makes sense because you need that distance between the outer to spots in order to put tension on the spoke
@@Brant_Moore I was able to get it to fit, just wondering about the spoke crossover effecting the actual reading of the spoke the meter is on. It appears the readings are fairly consistent as I went around the rim checking. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to try it one more time and being able to get clamped on the spokes. I bought a brand new PUCKIPUPPY Husky Plus trike and had to true up both back wheels. Eventually will have to strip them down to the rims only to do radius truing.
I've always been an awful bike mechanic, but I've grown to have more patience with time, but when it comes to lacing and truing a wheel... my patience is still pretty low 🤣 even though it has improved also. However, my lacing-a-wheel patience far from perfect, if my wheel is the same as yours is at the 14:00 mark, I'm done! Here comes the rim tape, tube & tire! By the way, I do ride brakes! 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Brant, I just received a new cinema complete wheel, and I've noticed that the lip edges of the rim are not perfectly smooth but rather slightly wavy for about an inch and a half in length, at the section of the wheel where the rim is pinned/joined. Should I ask for a replacement or these things are common with bmx rims? Thanks for the videos!
@@Brant_Moore I mean like if you would go with your fingers around the rim, and everything feels smooth except at that spot where it feels a bit like a slight up and down wave for about an inch and a half in length. Photo wouldn't pick it up. I sent the pics to a store, but the customer service guy couldn't see the issue. So I am taking it to a shop in a couple of hours for inspection, but I wanted to hear your opinion before I go.
How about a truing bicycle tire stand that's a little more budget-friendly? I'm disabled on a fixed income and that truing stand is way out of budget. You need to do a video of budget-friendly stands that work well.
Okay I'm stopping the video at 18:40 where it shows the center of the hub is not in the center of rim . To avoid this from happening you have to make sure the center of the lateral guide is at to the center of the hub . It only take a few seconds to make sure you have the guide centered . Just measure and mark the center of the hub before you start putting on the spokes . Mount just the hub and use a square to know where to set the center of the lateral guide . Once you have the guide centered open the guide to the width of the rim . Add the spokes and tighten them up so the rim fits in the space of the lateral guides . If you do this the rim will never be off to one side like you show in the video and it will cut your work time in half .

I'm might try those alienation rims out and if you ride allot those wheel wheel tools come in handy.

Why not immediately use Park Tool TM-1 to select the tension of the required spokes?

It’s a little hard to understand what you mean through words. If you send a picture or two in an Instagram message I’ll be able to see better

on a 'radial' side of the rim
like a dent or a kink
@35o125 oh I would imagine it’d probably be okay but if you’re nervous at all I’d still go to the shop just to feel better about it
My rum is 90% straight but it has a hop to it, how to fix this bump??? 😢
Found a book for you. The Bicycle Wheel. By Jobst Brant. No joke.
Woahhh! First version was originally published in 1981 and the 3rd version was published in 1993
