  • After being involved with BMX since 1995 and owning a bike shop since 2007 I finally built a wheel up from scratch and it wasn't easy! With the help of Matty we are doing a how to build up a wheel video showing the step by step process so you can build up your own wheels!

    Hey Scott, great video. Just wanted to share a tip from my many years of shop experience. If you do the "spoke-head-out" spokes on both flanges first (before starting the "spoke-head-in", or "crossing" spokes), you won't have to bend the non-drive side "spoke-head-out" spokes to get them in. With both sets of "spoke-head-out" spokes installed, there is still enough slack in the wheel to spin the hub in the "forward" direction before starting the "crossing" or "spoke-head-in" spokes. I find it saves a bit of effort and you don't have to bend the spokes nearly as much, especially on smaller wheels. Hope this can help you on your next wheel! I find that working on bikes is therapeutic, especially now that I no longer do it as a job. Would love to see more videos like this. Cheers!

      I came to see if anyone else mentioned this. It also let's you get half the spokes in before the hub is clocked which gives a lot more freedom for getting those nipples started.

    Reminds me years ago when Albe's put a challenge out to see if anyone could beat their wheel builder in the time it took to build a wheel. Turbo is a heck of a bike tech, and he is freakishly fast at building a wheel. Curious how quick BK builds a wheel, and if he could revive the challenge to beat Turbo's time.

    This video is absolute gold. I've been riding for 17 years now and I never could figure out how to true my rims. I actually made my own stand with an old set of bars a stem and some forks with some zip ties to see where the rim is at. I just couldn't figure it out and always made my wheels worse.

    Great video scotty been researching this alot lately getting ready to build by first custom wheel set very soon. Only one thing to add. When you start drop the first spoke into the hub hole that is directly next to the hub logo. This way when the wheel is fully laced you can read the logo by looking thru the valve stem hole. Doesent effect the wheel build but it shows forethought and good execution. Also its wise to prep the spoke threads with spoke compound or in a pinch linseed oil to prevent them from getting loose over time. ✌

    • @sammather5751
      @sammather5751 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are nearly correct, but you need to start in the hub flange hole [x number of holes] from the logo, where x is the number of crosses. So 3 cross would be the logo hole plus 3 in the direction of hub twist.

    Someone else mentioned, but yeah you guys made this way harder on yourself than needed. lol. Do spoke heads out on the drive side, then the same on the opposite side, then twist the hub and do the heads in spokes. This makes it so much easier to get those spokes in and do the 3 (or 4) cross. Love your ambition to learn a new skill!

    It’s great you finally learnt to do this, I have built some wheels over the years but have been building a lot more since i started started collecting bikes a few years ago, i find if you tighten all the nipples to just cover the thread on the spokes to start, then run around the wheel with the same amount of turns on the nipples until you are ready for the truing part the wheel is already pretty close. i got my first truing stand this week after riding since 1990, i have always just done them on the bike.

  • @EdyStauch
    @EdyStauch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I build a wheel last week. I prefer to use the technique of putting all the spokes on the hub and then mounting on the rim. The first side is the same as in the video, but on the second side I'm putting the spokes two by two already crossed with their pair. For those who have never done this work, it seems complicated to work with a lot of hanging spokes, but in the end it ends up being easier, because you don't have to bend the spokes.

    great job!

  • @paulbernard2397
    @paulbernard2397 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Much easier if you put the 9 across the hub from each side first, then you don't have to bend the spoke to get over crosses- that was why Matty was taught to do the spokes from the outside first. And better to take them all equally to the point where the nipple hides the thread on the spoke and then give them all 4 turns then all 3 turns, 2 turns or whatever seems applicable to tension. That way you can avoid 'egging' the wheel. But great tutorial nevertheless.

    *** Plenty of cool tips in the comments already so I'll just add this tidbit: A "nipple primer" tool makes building SOOOOO much easier. Just a simple tool that holds the nipple to keep you from dropping it into the rim and makes it easier to get it started. Take a long spare random spoke and thread a nipple onto the end well past the threads, so there are a good 3mm of threads showing. Bend the other end 90 degrees so you have something to leverage with. When it comes time to put a nipple in, you thread one onto the exposed threads and it'll hold the nipple in place so you can pilot it into place through the rim hole. Sure, you can spend money on a nipple tool but the rando spoke method is more or less free :-)
