- To grease or not to grease, that is the question! Working on BMX bikes can be intimidating and knowing the proper places to put grease as well as the places where grease isn't needed can take years to learn. So let me make it easier for you with this video!
With the help of my friend Kevin Czuba (@misckevin) we came up with this list of everywhere you should or shouldn't grease on your BMX bike!

I know this is an old video but another tip is to sand down the paint on the bars and stem where they meet to further reduce slippage.
Never greased my parts as a kid, couldn't get my bike apart. Got into mechanics and started putting too much grease, get black hands everytime I took my bike apart. The bmx lube job is best kept minimal but still important.

What an eye opener for me this video. I got my son a BMX and I just wanted to make sure I bought the right lubricant. I've decided to take it to a bike store as I couldn't trust myself with over greasing etc
I’m always happy to help! Supporting local shops is always good too! There’s not really much of a worry about over greasing causing problems other than just the mess of the excess though. For the future, since greasing things is part of regular maintenance

Lube all the things. I’m a bit of a triflow maniac tbh. Love that stuff and what I was using in my hubs pawls for awhile.
That and copper grease. For titanium bits. It works well on a lot of non ti stuff too. Odyssey used to include it with their cranks no idea if they still do.

Copaslick yup. Good stuff. Don’t think I’d use it in a hub though. Still looking into the beat grease for ti bits in a hub but pretty much anywhere else and that stuff is your saviour. It’ll help prevent it from cold welding to whatever it’s touching. Good stuff in general. Though lithium grease is probably better otherwise, for ti copaslick is the go to.
I have titanium crank bolts should I still apply my titanium anti seize? Or just leave as is so it does seize
I’m trying to understand how greasing a seat post if I set high will be a good idea when the grease will just allow it to slide easily?

I tighened it very hard but when i wanted to loosen the bolt, it was very easy to remove like it was never tighen hard i didnt put too much grease

Glad you made this viideo. One can imagine a lot of us, especially kids getting their semi built bike and just putting it all together without thinking about the grease. Pedal for starters. A couple of question. Do manafactures grease the bolts first? With the bolts that hold the headset to the stem, I read that they should never be taken out unless they really need to, is this the case?
Oh no doubt man when you aren’t told, the only way to learn is the hard way. Whether it be from a friend or first hand. That’s why I make these.
I think I noticed grease in my current stem when I got it, but that’s my only experience because it’s the only new stem I’ve ever had.
I’ve also never heard that about the back 2 bolts, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true

I’m old school mechanic so is cool working on my midscool with all sealed bearings, way easier to maintain than loose ball bearings

Hey bro nice video! Building my bike now and have found it helpful, was just wondering with the putting locktite on the cranks bolts has this ever caused you problems in the event of you having to remove the cranks?
or even having to swapout a sprocket? does the threadlocker make this very difficult?
Nah I’ve never had an issue like that. You can usually get some pretty good leverage when loosening cranks so you can usually break the bolt loose.
I have had pedals get stuck on cranks before though to where even heat wouldn’t get them off. Not from thread locker though

What do you recommend for chain lube? I used Tri-Flow for years but I don't know if that's around anymore. Or maybe there's a better option now?
Also you should think about annotating the video where you talk about threadlock so people understand there are multiple kinds. I'd only heard of Loctite being a permanent threadlock. I had no idea there were different levels available.
I believe tri flow is still a thing but I use park tool chain lube and it’s worked for me.
That’s definitely a good idea for when I have more time available. This video was started at 10pm Monday night and finished by 12:30am because I was so busy with other work related things. Really hope things take off soon so I can dedicate more time to these videos
Triflow for the win hubs chains and brake cables. Though dry lines for chains are better.
I used grease on my brothers chain and just now watching this video where he says not to.
Why does the chain get dirty so fast? He went crazy, he washed the chain, I didn't lubricate it, the next day the chain was already leaving black paint on his legs!
Hey Brant, for those of us that are new to bmx, can you do a video showing a list of tools you would prescribe to have in order to do normal work on your bike in garage at home? Not to take anything away from our local bike shops, but minimum tools to have to do everyday adjustments, switch tires etc. If you already made one, forgive me. I’ll find it. Thanks!
I’ve got one!! Search “essential BMX tools” or something along those lines and you should find it pretty quick. Hopefully it helps you!

The one and only time I put grease on all my stem bolts. One of my pinch bolts stripped the stem. The bolts sounded creaky so I greased. I never overtighten. I was told the grease caused it to strip out the stem threading. I call it bs, or faulty made stem.
That’s crazy. I had a creaky profile stem before that I greased. After doing so the creak all went away and everything was/is good with it.
Grease may have let you over tighten it accidentally. Especially if you had previously not been using grease. Extra stress on the threads and then an overload caused by the grease making it easier to tighten down.
Don’t have to grease stem bolts but it does let you tighten them down more and easier. Generally I find you move your bars or replace them enough to prevent seizing. But if you’re one of those people who never has bars slip or rides the same bars forever and never take them off grease your bolts. I generally bend bars fast as shit so I’m replacing them like at least once or twice a year. I also replace bolts every so often.
I’d still say always grease the bolts. But in practice loads of people don’t and are fine. But yeah it’s still possible it was an over tightening job by accident it’d be a very low over torque though. Still bad on the stem.
Hi just found your channel and I would like some advice if possible . Just got an old mongoose bmx and want to do full strip down . What grease would you use on the bottom bearing of the crank ? It's a 1 piece crank . Any advice would be helpful.

What type of grease and thread lock should be used?
I heard to grease the axles and the brake posts so they screw 🪛 in tight and smoother and can still come off easily.
But i guess i never take the brake posts off once installed.
Maybe a drop of oil or 2 on the axles?
idk if i put to much grease but it hard to pedal and the tire stop quickly i greased the crank hub
What about between the crank spindle and the bearing spacer? What about between the bearing spacer ends and bearing? What about between the bearings and spindle? Seems like lube like wd40 would be perfect for smooth use.
If you have 3 peice cranks with a clamping bolt on each arm, do you grease the clamping bolts? And thread lock the compression (big end bolts) bolts?

If I’m installing 3 piece crank with 48 splines and using a spline drive sprocket instead of a bolt on, do I grease between the spline drive sprocket and the spline drive?

@Brant_Moore Thanks a lot, wasn’t sure if greasing it would make the sprocket slip. Never put on a crankset on my bmx yet but deciding to build up my new build on my own. Do you have any tips you have on aligning the chain line and adding sufficient spacers? That’s the biggest thing I’m unsure about. Odyssey Calibur V2 cranks to an Odyssey mid BB with a Profile Galaxy spline drive sprocket.

Is thread lock necessary? Would leaving the screws dry and firmly in place be adequate enough?
Depends on where you’re talking about. Pedals can be very annoying if they won’t stay tight. And crank arm bolts can be very frustrating if they come loose as well.
It’s often times better than not having it. But on somewhere like a stem bolt, I will always use grease over thread locker

I never put grease on the clutch surface of my freecoaster cause i hate when it makes the clutch sticky, but my friend swears by it. What's your opinion?
Interesting. I’ve never had a freecoaster so I can’t confidently say unfortunately.
I’d guess if you both haven’t broken them then either way might be okay
With freecoasters there almost isn’t too much grease. I had a loosebal one and I used grease on the clutch. Nankai hub though. All my friends grease their clutch.
The clutch eats out the shell of your hub over time. Grease helps prevent this. Well slow it down. Eventually even a new clutch doesn’t fix them.

Went wayyy back 10 years ago to Maui
Grease bearings, threads/cables get silicone spray and I use gun oil on my chain because I have allot of gun oil.
My seatpost is slipping and the seatclamp bolt is tight enough but when I try to tighten it up to prevent the slipping problems, the bolt looks like breaking. Help me ):
I would take it out and take it with you to the local hardware store to find the same bolt as a replacement
My crank bolts keep coming lose every time I ride, I don't have a thread lock and I can't go to a local bike shop. What should I do?
Get some thread locker at any local home improvement or hardware or auto parts store

One question though. Does the factory grease cranks and most parts on brand new bikes? I was going to do the stem like you said, the seat post and clap. And I was just going to make sure everything was tight. I guess my question was do I need to grease the cranks
It's hard to say but will definitely be very obvious if you take anything off. I would take off the non drive side crank arm to see and it can't hurt much other than being messy to add more grease even if there is some
I worked at a bike shop. We had a kid come in with bottom bracket problems. We took it apart and asked him what kind of strange grease he used.
He told us he didn't have any grease, so he used regular crest tooth paste.

Grease in axle bolts wouldn’t be a bad idea. People do put it in pedals as well but I don’t personally
I just spray my bike down with ballistol cause I’m a gun guy and that’s what I have available. I figure if ballistol lubricant can keep a gun running where metal touches metal and keep it shiny then it can definitely do the same for my bmx bike. Haven’t had any issues with that theory yet. I guess we will see in a few years 😂
Thanks for the indirect compliment lol, I took apart my shitty quando front hub and the balls fell out and I couldn't find anything online, so I big brained it out and figured out where the balls needed to go in order for them to sit properly on the axle, then I greased the literal fuck out of them so I'll never have to worry until I get a new wheel.

Use wet lube for your chain like finish line wet lube use thread locker on crank bolts grease your end of your seat post grease your bolts for your stem and seat clamp bolt Grease female bolts for hubs grease your axle of your cranks and where your axle gos in the crank arm freecoaster hubs need grease On the internals I would do this every month 👍🔧🚲💨
Dry lube on your chain. Works better. Well keeps it cleaner.

I've always greased axel nuts. And I don't understand locktite on crank bolts. Locktite use needs to be explained better. Small bolts under high torque, I'm worried about stripping and rusting. With locktite, aren't you supposed to strip all grease before using it? And so, if you do that aren't you exposing the part to corrosion and eventual seizure?
Agreed. I've always greased my axle nuts too. It keeps them from binding and cross-threading. And I haven't had a problem with them coming loose.
If I’m not mistaken locktite itself is a corrosion inhibitor. Not all greases mix well. One that’s supposed to lock threads probably double so. It’s like the ghetto paint locking threads. Kinda prevents other stuff from getting in there. When you go to loosen it once it cracks it comes loose. Even really old painted bolts can be removed if it was done right.
I’ll go double check their tech info though but yeah.
Yeah it’s an anti seize that prevents anything else from getting to the threads. Basically the same as the paint trick but not ghetto. Seals up any gaps for it to get in. The compound itself probably also has proper anti corrosives in it would be my guess. There’s a trick to building bomb proof wheels with it. Build em up prebed and stretch the spokes as much as possible ride till you have to tighten it back up then replace all your nipples remove the grease from the spokes and locktite them back into place one by one. Few pro riders do it. Prevents spokes from coming loose except via really crazy shit.
Linseed oils apparently works just as well but no need to replace the grease just use that from the get go. I’d assume boiled linseed oil but not sure. But you can buy pre boiled stuff.
Also don’t ever fucking use the red locktite you’ll rage super hard. It’s basically a “I never ever fucking want this to come apart ever again” compound. The blue stuff is legit. Pretty sure the blue stuff ironically comes in a red tube. But as long as it’s blue liquid coming out you’re fine. Someone I know got a free stem outa that mess up. Bought bars off our friend who red locktited the stem bolts in cause he couldn’t find his blue stuff.
The stem was broken to free the bars.
