Man, poor Onix. It looks way stronger than it actually is. You'd think a giant snake made entirely of rock that spends much of its life digging massive tunnels underground would be a lot tougher when in reality it has a base Attack total that's the same as Wurmple's. Are you fricken kidding me?

@@JJames666male For Pokémon like that they just needed moves to compliment their physical types. We definitely needed better Flying, Bug, Rock, Poison, Ghost and Fighting moves.
-Razor Wind should've been a 1 Turn Flying move.
-Wing Attack should've been 60 BP from the start
-Gust should've also been Flying, maybe raise the BP and give Pidgey Peck instead
-Sky Attack also should've been 1 Turn, Solar Beam and Skull Bash too, there was no point to nerf them like that when Fire Blast, Blizzard and Thunder existed, it should also have been given to Gyarados
-Cut and Vicegrip should've been 60 BP Bug moves.
-Leech Life should've been 40 BP
-Rage, Strength, Mega Punch and Mega Kick should've been Fighting
-Submission should've been 100 BP and Accuracy
-Poison Sting should've been a multihit move.
-Every Poison Pokémon should've learned Acid and Sludge at some point
-Skull Bash and Swift could have been Rock type, but that's a stretch
-Bide should've been Rock type, but that wouldn't change anything.
-Rock Throw needed an accuracy buff
There's probably other changes, but those would definitely make physical attackers in Gen 1 better, alongside balancing out the rest of the meta.

    Beedrill is C tier, eh?
This is a love letter to Spike the Beedrill. His Nuzlocke run was difficult, fraught with bad luck and bad typing. But he was amazing.
Now, I won't lie, like anyone else who makes a Fire Red run, I was very disappointed to encounter a Weedle in the grass of Route 2, just before the Viridian Forest. I would have preferred a Pidgey. However, I was hurting for team members since this run had a "No Starter" clause, and I had "returned" Professor Oak's Squirtle after catching Nibbles the Rattata, so I kept Spike on as a placeholder Pokémon.
I largely ignored him at first, keeping his level just barely up with the rest of the team. It wasn't till right before Misty that I finally started to give him any real attention at all. Rose the Oddish proved to be a little on the fragile side and I was worried about her handling Misty's Starmie. I trained Spike so that he could use Twin Needle on the part psychic Pokemon. A good choice on my part, since Rose ended up confused from Starmie's Water Pulse, leaving Spike to bail us out.
My luck hadn't been very good this run, and by the S.S. Anne, I had only captured eight Pokémon. Then, just north of Vermillion City, my luck sank even farther. While using the Versus Seeker to train, Camper Jeff decided to get revenge and murdered both Nibbles the Raticate and Baboon the Mankey. Shortly after, Diggy the Diglet was killed by a Goldeen's Horn Attack.
I was quickly finding myself lacking the Pokémon I needed to fight Surge. In an act of desperation, I taught Tomcat the Meowth Dig to handle most of the electric types I'd encounter, and Spike learned Brick Break to deal with any Magnemites. The two of them wiped Surge's gym rather easily.
By this point, Spike had earned a begrudging spot on the team. His Brick Break was surprisingly effective in most of his battles, and despite his species reputation as fragile speedster, he proven himself very durable.
    And then I challenged Sabrina.
And as I'm sure many can attest, Sabrina is a murderer.
It was a stupid move on my part. Four of the Pokémon on my team carried a poison typing. I should have gone south after Sliph Co, challenged Koga, leveled up some more. But I overestimated my chances.
The key to my strategy was Wisp the Haunter. Her Shadow Ball destroyed most of the gym, including Sabrina's Kadabra and Mr. Mine, with One-Hit-KO's. And than Sabrina sent out her Alakazam, who proved that he was just as quick on his feet physically as mentally. I don't know how much damage Shadow Ball would have done since Wisp never got the chance to use it. She evaporated under one Psychic attack.
Tomcat the Persian was my back up, but he only landed one Feint Attack before falling to critical Psychic hit. And now I was in trouble.
Both Rose the Gloom and Regal the Nidoking were far too slow and would both die immediately. Hawke the Fearrow was certainly faster and lacked a type disadvantage, but his only dark attack was Pursuit. Besides, I had been planning on saving him for her Venomoth, and I very much doubted he could take them both.
So, as a last minute Hail Mary, I sent out Spike, praying that his speed would be greater than Alakazam's.
    It wasn't.
I remember how my heart sank with that health bar.
I had barely caught sixteen Pokémon by this point. Of that, five had already died. After my whole team got taken out here, I wouldn't even have enough for a full roster when starting over. I wasn't sure I could handle that. This run was over.
On a whim, just a mere half an hour of game time previously, I had used an HP-Up that I found in Sliph Co on Spike. It had given him two extra health points. I should have used more stuff on him. Hindsight.
And than his HP bar stopped.
    At exactly 2 HP.
The elation and excitement I felt was indescribable.
And then Spike attacked. Twin Needle, which was both Super Effective and a STAB attack, was than in turn boosted by Spike's specially ability, Swarm. Alakazam, who still had over three quarters left in his health bar, fainted immediately. Spike didn't even need to hit him with the second needle.
That was the moment that he went from a begrudging member of the team to my partner. And he stayed there, digging my team out of trouble time and time again. For a Pokémon with a Docile nature, he proved to be one heck of fighter.
I wish I could give you the ending of Spike's story, but I can't. While training for the Elite Four, I messed up. I left my NDS with my copy of Fire Red on the sink in the bathroom at work. It only took me ten minutes for me to realize my mistake, but by then, it was gone. I searched everywhere, asked my coworkers and supervisors, but it was nowhere to be found.
I won't lie, it hurts knowing I'll never see the ends of that run. I imagine a big climatic final battle between Spike and my rival's Venosaur, named Faunus (Processor Oak gave all his starters very grandiose names, the Squirtle I borrowed was Poseidon). But such is life, I suppose.
Spike the Beedrill was easily one of the best Pokémon I've ever trained. He went from just another useless Weedle to my battle tested partner. Goodbye, Spike.
    You really were amazing.

Not being able to evolve any Pokémon where the evolution isn’t in the Kanto Dex until you beat the game and not being able to get Pokémon like Espeon and Umbreon at all because the Day-Night cycle wasn’t in Gen 1 was just such a hilariously dumb move. Like wtf was the point of that and what’s the logic behind it? Yeah sure, I‘m gonna keep a Golbat on my team for the whole freaking game, you know, because it was such a classic in *good ol Gen 1.* It’s good to know that my Pokémon doesn’t love me until I show it the National Dex, I‘m sure half the fanbase can relate to this sentiment. Spearow gets aerial ace at 25 in gen 3 if you wait for the evolution and you have an incredibly reliable stab move that won't ever miss. Quick attack is always decent to have just in case, and you can teach either steel for coverage or stab return through TMs. Plus, of course, you can get fly before 4th gym.

My issue with early game only Pokémon like Butterfree is that while they're certainly very strong in the early game, the time you spend leveling them up is wasted and leaves your other Pokémon that you will actually use in the later parts of the game under leveled and thus require even more grinding. So to me these early game Pokémon are only used as a last resort, like for example Butterfree if you start with Charmander but even than it's not really necessary as you can get 6 random Pokémon at level 14 for Brock and eventually grind him with only bad and neutral matchups.

Pleading the case of Charizard in RBY-- TM03, Swords Dance, is fantastic. Set up moves are fantastic. Furthermore, having a starter with a good Physical move pool that can use this broken set up move is huge game. Charizard can have a move set including Body Slam and Earthquake alongside Swords Dance, and the only thing that resists both is Aerodactyl, which doesn't have a single Rock move to hit Charizard with and gets OHKOed by a set-up Charizard regardless. Other learners of Swords Dance are either not guaranteed or mostly have only good Normal physical attacks in their move pool.

That's really the issue with this tier list. Gotta be more specific. What games are we talking about? Lots of Gen 1 Pokemon are very good in RBY but are garbage in later games and vice versa (Butterfree being a great example, it's fucking atrocious in G1, but CompoundEyes means anything slower than it can't fight it in the remake so it's much better despite having mostly middling stats). I think regular Ninetales should be given a second chance as a gym leader or elite four ace, Nasty plot, solar beam, flamethrower, agility, drought would be just perfectly difficult for a new game. If they wanted it to be nasty, give it a bright powder, leftovers, or sitrus berry to help set up. If they wanted easier, take away the drought and agility and give it sunny day to make it harder to set up ( I personally think this could still be to weak, so maybe give it a power herb to kill under prepped teams with one one fire counter to prevent an easy water or ground sweep *cough Flannery*.) Or maybe they could mix up the classic strat by doing a more tanky/crippler strat, (calm mind, mystical fire, willow wisp, stored power) with leftovers or a sitrus berry

Now, I use plenty of items on my playthroughs, so my experiences might be a bit different than yours, but here is my team I used for my FireRed Nuzlocke
Venusaur- My starter, carried my through the early parts of the game. Easily took care of Brock and Misty. Later on all he could do was a decent Razor Leaf, but grew attached and couldn't throw him in the box
Fearow- Fearow took down almost all of the early bug and grass types, did really well early, but once I got to Celadon City I benched it for a Doduo
Nidoking- My main pokemon for taking on Normal or electric types, did well against fire types too, Didn't do too much against the Elite four, but I vaguely remember this thing saving my run against Blue
Hypno- Psychic types are always pretty good, can't say too much more than that. Took quite a few hits, and took many more lives. Did great against Bruno and Agatha, Koga, and obliterated Cycling Road
Jolteon- Absolutely demolished any water and flying types that crossed its path. Lorelei, Lance's Aerodactyl and Gyarados, Blue's Gyarados, Pidgeot, and Charizard. Had bite to help out with any ghost or psychic types, thunder wave to paralyze opponents. MVP
Dodrio- I thought it would do a lot better. I did great against grass and bug types, which only really helped against Erika. It could pull off a powerful Return, a decent Drill Peck, and fly me around
Cloyster- Second best team Member. Got it kind of late, but used all of my Rare Candies at the time to catch it up. Immediately evolved it and bought it an Ice Beam TM. I remember Cloyster being quite a bit faster than expected, and even against Blaine, the low special defense wasn't a huge issue. It was however an issue against Lance. Still had insane physical defense though.
And RIP to Hypno and Dodrio. The only two pokemon to die throughout that entire Nuzlocke

I’ve found butterfree to be at the front of my team in the fire red nuzlocke I started about a week ago (though it is my first nuzlocke and I’m currently going through silph co tower) because it has a huge special attack and sleep powder, and dream eater (a base 100 power psychic move *which heals butterfree*) can be learned from an npc in pewter city after learning cut and/or surf. It’s fairly specific but a sleep powder dream eater combo (both moves have 15 pp) is *really* good. Personal S tier

Farfetchd is really underated here. In early gens it gets early swords dance and can sweep teams quite easily.

Was looking for this comment. Farfetch'd is really good, very much above average in gen 1, and since Jan accounts for gen 1 in the other pokemon, that F-tier ranking was certainly a miss.
Also, isn't Mr. Mime a bit low?

Arcanine and Jolteon carried me through my entire first Moon run with Decidueye.

All experts agree that Venosaur is the best of the starters.
