    The first vet I took my new fur baby too told me to feed science diet, Purina or royal canine. 😮 I told them “so chicken meal is healthy and best for my dog?” Who pays these vets to promote these brands?!? Also immediately put my pup on heart worms meds and flea and tick meds at 12 weeks old. So thankful for these videos. I’m implementing Raw along with homemade treats and learning as I go. Also flea and tick meds are out for me.

    This was such an informative discussion. My dog suffered the first year of her life on kibble. Once I did some research and came across Dr. Judy Morgan I began transitioning her to a home-cooked diet. She's going to be 4 this year & thriving!

    Ok I’m just gonna throw this out there. When I gotten my puppy he has been sneezing violently and huffing and puffing. I didn’t know what it was and I fed him high quality kibble. So once I made the switch to homemade food he doesn’t do the violent sneezing anymore. He’s been great ever since.

    My GSD has EPI. I had to diagnose her and ask my vet for the proper tests to confirm. My vet didn't know what to do to treat her. He gave me vegetable based enzymes, that didn't work. I went into research mode and figured it out for myself. Pork based digestive enzymes was the right treatment. 3 years later my girl is doing well with minimal issues. Moral of the story is veterans, just like human doctors have a license to "practice" medicine. It doesn't mean they know everything. Know that knowing your pet and your love for them will guide you to do the right thing for them. Thank you for this video keep spreading the word about the greed that plagues all our food and drug industry. ❤️✌️

    thanks, Rachel. I cook my dogs' food because no commercial dog food is organic, raw or cooked, and most of them add toxic synthetic vitamins and minerals. I add Four Leaf Rover's supplements, and as a multi, I use Venjenz's Rampart which uses whole food vitamins and minerals. Kibble is an obscenity. Even the Farmer's Dog is full of added synthetics

    I already love listening to Dr Brady , I do not have a dog at this time my sweet yellow lab is been gone 6 yrs. Now I’m retired and am planning on a new pup sometime soon as I can, but meanwhile I’m just seeking info I came upon your video and I’m amazed and need to learn more . My lab ate kibble all her life she lived to 15 but she did get beef bones which she loved. But with new dog soon I’m so open to new ways to raise her .

    Something came over me to make the switch to gently cooked or raw dog food. I have no excuse I’m retired. And with the toppings I put over their food, I may as well make the whole meal. So now I’m looking at videos and doing research. I have always appreciated Rachel for her videos on dogs they are so helpful. But now since I’m looking into this important subject your content is invaluable. Thank you so much, you are so knowledgeable and helpful and your expert guests put you over the top, you’re simply the best! And even saying that doesn’t seem like enough.

      Thank you for all your content & tips also Rachel, I drank Dr Billinghurst’s “kool-aid” 12 years ago. Have 3 cockapoos, all raw fed. I love this talk, thank you! I just wanted to ask what to feed a lactating dog. I keep seeing recommendations to feed them more carbohydrates for the sake of puppy growth. My dog is fed a high protein high fat diet, and I’m wondering if I should just feed her more of her diet (more calories but not more carbohydrates) when she’s lactating, or if I should make an exception and increase her carbohydrate consumption during lactation.

    my vet just "yelled" at me for feeding my now senior dog a high protein diet. they said that it will lead to kidney issues. & strongly urged me to change her to hills, royal canine or purina senior dog food. though I did go out and buy a bag of it .... I just can't get myself to believe that those foods would be better for her then a more raw / freeze dried diet (even though its higher in protein). is there validity to high protein diets = kidney disease / failure ??????

    Would like to know about a seven-year-old dog who's been on kibble only how can you start them on raw food I've heard of pancreas problems with too much protein???

    • @laurenmichero9003
      @laurenmichero9003 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My dogs have had pancreatitis in the past when they were on kibble. I transitioned them to gently cooked and also give them raw. I would suggest trying a gently cooked commercial diet or a freeze dried diet first.
      Pancreatitis has no official known cause…even vets don’t know in every instance what causes it. However a lot of times it can be caused by stress & inflammation in the body, cooked rancid fats, and too many carbohydrates (ie kibble is high in carbs).
      I transitioned my dogs to fresh Whole Foods and they have never looked or felt better. When you know what’s in kibble and how it’s made, then human grade fresh food is so much better. Traditional vets have been taught that kibble is better than other options out there but that’s because the vet schools actually get $ from the big kibble companies to promote kibble. I use several different brands and mix up their proteins and even my older dogs don’t have GI problems now when they really had a rough time on kibble.

  • @chrissy8386
    @chrissy8386 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    My dog won’t touch kibble. He only likes home cooked food. He’ll eat a bit of raw now and then, but he prefers cooked food. I worry about getting his diet nicely balanced though. He’s very picky. Not sure why people want to turn their cats and dogs veggie, I’ve been veggie over 27years, and I hand feed my dog meats and everything 😂.

    Definitely would love to see Dr Brady again and give a talk about gut flora support. Also, it would be great hear his thoughts on new push to feed alternative protein source- I'm referring to insects dog food. I feel that we need to be proactive and learn more about now, because the movement to cut meat production is already very strong in human food chain, so it will become even stronger in petfood. We would like to believe that we are in charge of what we feed our pets and ourselves as well, but we all can see that certain, mega corporations purchasing farm land and food production, especially in US. Small farms and butchers are being pushed out of business. With high inflation most people cannot afford to purchase good quality meat for themselves, much less for their pets. Premade complete and grinds went up through the roof since last year. Big corporations already manipulate what we read, listen, how we vote and now they manipulate what we eat. Thank you Rachel for great content and having Dr Brady.

    Hate to break it to you, but this isn’t just a problem for pet parents, but for people parents too. Humans don’t need near as many carbs in their diet as doctors lead you to believe. That silly food pyramid ought to be tipped upside down!! If you’re buying anything these two are saying, then definitely look into the proper human diet, because believe me, meat heals. And doctors don’t want you to know that. Anyway, I’m here watching this channel because I’m wanting to get my dogs on a raw diet. I have seen what a carnivore diet can do for people, and I definitely believe that dogs need a lot more meat than what is recommended. Thanks for the video.❤ love your guest, he seems like he has his head screwed on straight.

  • @sswwooppee
    @sswwooppee ปีที่แล้ว +48

    There’s only one valid argument for kibble. It’s more convenient for the human. It’s completely outweighed by all the arguments for the raw diet.

    • @laurenmichero9003
      @laurenmichero9003 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be blunt, that’s a lazy and presumptuous argument. You don’t speak for all pet parents and you certainly don’t speak for those who simply don’t know there are other alternative options out there.
      Actually freeze dried, dehydrated, air dried, etc are as convenient as kibble and they’re much better for the dogs/cats. Most people who spend a lot on kibble think it’s good for their animals and they even look for the best kibble they can afford. Same for prescription diets. The consumers are tricked into thinking this stuff is healthy and necessary, and they’re never given better alternative options.
      There are so many new brands that offer a variety of proteins and have all differing price ranges so you can find one that’s affordable for you.
      There are even some brands like Green Juju that use organ meats and balance with Whole Foods instead of synthetic vitamins. Companies are really taking into account how busy people are and they’re trying to accommodate those people with convenient AND healthy alternatives to kibble. Most of these other options only require adding a little water to rehydrate. Most people add water on top of kibble anyway. If people knew what was really in kibble or how it was made and what happens to it as it sits in the bag…or how often they get recalled for making people and dogs/cats sick, then I’m sure many of them would dedicate a few more seconds or minutes to feeding their dogs something healthier than simply dumping toxic kibble into a bowl.
      Convenience is really just an excuse…& it’s the argument pushed by the big kibble companies, so you’re basically propagating their propaganda for them.

    • @sswwooppee
      @sswwooppee ปีที่แล้ว

      @@laurenmichero9003 you don’t seem to have read and grokked the point of my comment. “Lazy and presumptuous” indeed.

      Sometimes that is true! But some people have cognitive dissonance or they have just never been told how bad dry kibble is

    • @Aimee0206
      @Aimee0206 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is a bit of a closed-minded argument, many disabled people can't feed raw for a variety of reasons.
      Raw food takes a lot of time to prepare, including measuring out portions and cleaning surfaces before and after. I'm not able to stand up long enough to do all of this, even if it's just for one meal. On bad days, I can just about manage to do my dogs' dry food before needing to sit back down. My kitchen is far too small to use a chair in there and there's no chance I'm letting raw food go anywhere near the rest of my house. Costs also come into play.
      It's less about convenience and more about what I'm physically capable of doing everyday.

      Dr Mercola has one or two options but Adored Beast also has a line of probiotics including one with digestive enzymes that’s great.

      He mentioned rice in the first half of the video sorry I don't remember the exact time, but basically rice is just sugar. Not necessary for dogs, it's just used as a filler

      I would get a book like Yin and Yang which has complete and balanced recipes for dogs. It’s best to follow a recipe…& avoid rice and starches

    So loved this video. Totally believe in going back to the the good old days. Both people and domestic animals were healthier. Amber waves of grain. Back then wheat was tall. Today, wheat is a fraction of the height. How did they manage making wheat into a short plant? GMO. Our plant food does not resemble any of the real food plants from back in the day

    I put pure Scottish salmon oil on my dog kibble. I wish I could afford full raw but times are tight. I will try adding an egg now and again tho. Glad I found this video.
    3 months ago my dog started itching and almost scraped all his back fur off on the side of his crate. He's regularly flea, tick and wormed. I could find no reason for his itching. His fur has now grown back but he's still itching and dull fur. Vets say feed a better food... that we just happen to sell here!

    I have a rescue Dutch Shepard who is almost !0 years old and her energy level is that of a two year old. I feed her less than 2 cups grain free kibble per day (Morning/Night) with Tbs Ground Flax and two small baby carrots. Every other day Raw Beef liver or Salmon. Every other day one raw Bone with marrow. She's only had one rabies shot since I"ve had her 5yrs. and only 3 vet visits. Dog parks are a big NO. Thanks for all the info. I've subscribed and will be watching more.

    I've been seeing newer food that is made from insects. Some people feed their dogs or cats this who have allergies. What do you think of this type of food? I've seen kibble formulas and wet food formulas.

      There are so many options on the market now. If you ask the customer service reps at different companies then they should be able to tell you what is suitable to eat in most cases. I recently called a couple of brands and they went over the ingredient lists with me to find the best options. The smaller brands really seem to care about providing customers with good info to help our pets.

    A chap on TH-cam who always fed raw has recently reluctantly changed his mind because 2 of his dogs have developed kidney problems, which the vets put down to his raw diet. Are u guys aware of any link between raw and kidney disease?
    And with regards to home cooked food, what would you recommend? To include any carbs or not?

    • @laurenmichero9003
      @laurenmichero9003 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are several causes of kidney disease and not necessarily attributed to diet. Were the vets conventional vets because I doubt a holistic vet would automatically attribute it to food. Kidney disease can come from heart disease, high blood pressure, exposure to chemicals, genetics, etc…so I would hope he would investigate further on his own or find another vet for a second opinion.
      There have been dogs on Rx kidney diets that have died from malnutrition so I hope he didn’t switch from raw/cooked to something like that.
      My own dog has a form of kidney disease that is secondary to his heart disease that was recently diagnosed. There are plenty of causes completely unrelated to diet

    Love listening so interesting not finished yet but I have one question
    Why is raw food better ? Can we cook the meats first. I’m happy feeding raw and do but why is raw the best when the same stuff could all be cooked first.

    • @laurenmichero9003
      @laurenmichero9003 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can cook raw but you lose some of the beneficial aspects like the natural enzymes in raw food. I actually give my dogs a mix of raw and gently cooked. There are brands that tell you how to safely gently cook their food (AllProvide, Viva Raw, Darwin’s) or you can get already gently cooked meals (Raised Right, AllProvide).
      Freeze dried is also a good option. It isn’t highly processed like kibble. All you have to do is add water, bone broth, etc to rehydrate the dried raw food.
      Also raw is how dogs and cats eat prey in the wild.
      Gently cooked does slightly change the food but not that much. If your dogs prefer cooked, as many do, then that’s still a great option. Some dogs also digest gently cooked better. As long as it is human grade food with few or no synthetic additives, then you should be fine

    I started a high fat carnivore diet and felt so much better that I put my German Shepherd on it too. I'm not rich and don't buy the real expensive meat. Meat, eggs, fish and lard, no seed or vegetable oils.

    I feed our dog ground beef, an egg, a little bit of homemade yoghurt, few berries, few boiled carrots and fish oil. The fella is amazingly playful yet very, very calm. I think kibble f***cks with their irritability a lot, if more than anything.

      I feed mine 50/50 currently as I can't quite afford 100% as of now, her health has dramatically improved I also stopped the tick and flea prev and opted for holistic solutions as well as daily checks in tick season, I can see she's clearing up in her ears and got shiner coat as well as a lot more energy 🥰
