      To add more to Vader there was a time he had to deal with a scientist who learned the hard way that shutting off disabling his life support systems would not stop him, a mistake he would never get to make again when Vader killed him.

    I remember in the Shadows of the Empire novel, Vader removing his helmet in a meditation chamber, then using the Force to sustain him while he turned off the chamber. He was making progress towards keeping himself breathing for longer and longer periods each time. I think he managed a full minute. The ironic thing was that he was using the Dark Side to do it, and every time he succeeded, his own joy in his success broke his connection to the Dark Side, causing it to fail. So, literally, succeeding was what was causing him to fail.
    Just imagine how much more dangerous Vader would have been if he had gotten a suit that didn't hold him back.

They did something, I honestly don't remember what, and then someone took the stage dressed as Darth Vader and chatted with the host. Vader is my go to favorite bad guy. Anakins literally overwhelming level of power and connection to the Force was made evident in the latter seasons of The Clone Wars, and you really get a look at just how much of a force of nature he was. The Emperor was very much aware of this, and was likely very much afraid of any possibility that would turn that kind of power against him. Had Anakin gotten proper cybernetics and treatment, his cooled raged turned to focus would make him the single most powerful being in the Galaxy. Vaders suit isnt protecting him from you, its protecting you from him.

    Interesting video. It's worth pointing out though that George Lucas didn't mastermind every detail: a lot of it was made up as things went along. Vader's helmet and suit were originally supposed to be his flight suit, but it happened to look cool on camera. (The general story arc and even the family relationships among Luke, Leia and Vader weren't fleshed out until _Star Wars_ was already released.)
    When you really get down to it, a lot of the _Star Wars_ OT is a synthesis of Joseph Campbell's ideas with _Flash Gordon, Dune,_ Kurosawa, and many other famous works. All great artists pull from great influences-and Lucas deserves the "great" label for some of his work-but I think there's a strong argument that Lucas had many strokes of good luck in the right places a the right times to pull off _Star Wars_ and _Empire Strikes Back._

      Ashley Tuchin, I managed to find this on Wikipedia "Blackcurrants were once popular in the United States as well, but became less common in the 20th century after currant farming was banned in the early 1900s, when blackcurrants, as a vector of white pine blister rust, were considered a threat to the U.S. logging industry."
      So I guess just banned in states that are active in the logging industry

      I should be careful when I say "banned", because it makes it sound like it's this new thing and a huge deal. It has been an issue for quite some time, mainly dating back to the early 1900s. But a few places do actually place bans on them. The thing that many people outside the US don't understand is how rare it is here. It's so common in other places, but we don't get the same deliciousness so many others do. I love the stuff and it always bums me out that I can't find it. When I learned the reason for its scarceness, I was surprised and thought it was pretty interesting

    You mean to say that it isn't just a random bit of cheesy scifi costume guff which is about as meaningful as the flashing lights on the bridge of the Enterprise?
    Okay, I can just about accept that he might need his own personal temperature control, but what use is an off button? I suppose that's in case the suit ever goes wrong he can get it going again by switching it off and switching it back on again.
    But who exactly designed a suit with control panels on the chest and belt where they will be totally invisible to a man wearing a mask with deepset eye sockets and a prominent nose piece? How is he meant to see which buttons he's pressing? Why not put the controls somewhere sensible like on his wrist?
    And then there's the gloves with fingers much bigger than the buttons ...
    So we've got a control panel with potentially disastrous consequences which is placed on a part of his body that he can't see but his enemies can and which has fiddly buttons and a chunky pair of gloves.
    Nah, I'm calling naff set design on this one. I think we can file it alongside the renowned and galaxy-famous Jedi ObiWan Kenobi hiding from the Empire by changing his name to Old Ben Kenobi, living within a few miles of Darth Vader's birthplace and who walks around wearing the costume of a Jedi knight and using a light sabre in a public place. Good hiding, Obiwan.

    • @darken2417
      @darken2417 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You could use the force to "feel" where the buttons are that you are constantly defending.
      Perhaps Kenobi is an incredibly common name like Smith. Also the only people he spoke to were probably Luke's family who already know who he is. Common people on Tatooine(probably misspelled) probably don't know what a Jedi knight robe looks like or a lightsaber for that matter. Once he pulled it out and started using it people did take notice, but did they care enough to do anything? He also left the planet right after using it. Even if Darth Vader had went to Tatooine for a family barbecue, Old Ben could have just stayed in his cave suppressing his presence.

      I can almost guarantee those buttons had no purpose when the character was being created. The decades of expanded universe comics, books, games, etc. gave meaning and backstory to every single nut and bolt seen in any frame of the original trilogy.

    • @iainreeve4522
      @iainreeve4522 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There's a fine line between looking cool and looking cheesy. Most of the handguns in Star Wars were based on real guns because George Lucas wanted them to look realistic. That's cool. But the buttons on Darth Vader's costume seem to be based on cheap 1980s hifis. That's cheesy.
      We tend to accept the cool stuff. It adds to the experience. But when something is so outright cheesy it drags us out of the willing suspension of disbelief. Personally I am trying very hard to ignore those damned buttons, just as I'm trying to ignore that nagging question about how long it takes to fly to Degobah and how you go to the toilet in an X-wing.

    • @jmowreader9555
      @jmowreader9555 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Iain, Vader was Palpatine's enforcer. He wanted Vader to be completely under his control. He had plenty of reasons for Vader to need a turbo boost button - and even more reasons for Vader to not be able to push it himself. As for the off button...it serves the same function as Robocop's "Directive 4" - a mechanism for an evil corporation that builds a weapon that could destroy it to stop that from happening. Palpatine would have sent an assistant along with Vader to operate the controls. (If the Star Wars universe would have been in our present time, Palpatine would have a "Vader App" on his smartphone.)

    I thought Palpatine gave Vader a crappy painful irritating suit so that Vader would not only train to be powerful even with limitations (like muhammed ali training underwater), but so he was filled with hatred. IIRC Palpatine planned to replace the suit with one that actually enhanced him instead of restricting him but it was too risky for the reasons you mentioned, so Vader was stuck in his "training" suit.

      From across the galaxy? BS. No, Anakin himself used life drain on her out of rage when he force choked her.

    Just a little more info. Mace Windu's use of Vaapad reflects a dark force users energy back at them. Only Mace could have done what was done as he was the only alive user of Vaapad. In that particular case a circuit had been created where the Dark Side was being drawn out and redirected back at Palpatine which was why he couldn't stop the lightning. It wasn't an act when he was becoming weaker, if it had of continued he would have died. Sidious was stripped of the power that had been used to put the Mask in place which was a Sith Ritual which took some time and effort to create but little to no effort to maintain but did need a portion of his power. Hope you found this enlightening.

      @@JohnDoe-vn1we The new Star Wars movies had amazing visuals but lacked something any story needs. A plot you can follow. With exceptions, they followed exactly what the first three movies did. It felt like I was watching a terrible remake (plot wise)(Graphically wise it was amazing.)
      I'm only gonna list a few things, because someone already made an hour long explanation on why those three movies did so terribly.
      Original: New:
      Big evil empire Big evil empire
      Giant death star Even bigger death star
      Small group of rebels that shouldn't be able to make it Small group of rebels that are barely holding together
      Blow the death star up to win Oh look, we should blow up that convenient port hole that is the Achilles heel in this entire thing! This whole thing is starting to feel like de ja vu!
      Evil sith overlord and apprentice Evil Sith overlord that does literally nothing but sit in a chair
      Apprentice kills the Sith and turns to the good side Oh look, he killed the Sith, what a surprise!
      So, say what you want, but those new movies had a total plot flop. And if you think I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm a writer. I teach people about plots and consistencies and not repeating the same plot in a sequel. I'm also not the only one who thinks this way.
