A short while ago we wrote about the fact Queen Elizabeth II needs neither a passport nor driving license thanks to a quirk of British law. But what other powers does the Queen of many titles have and what could she theoretically do if she decided to flex the full might of the authority she wields? As it turns out, thanks to the Royal Prerogative, a terrifying amount if she really felt like it, or, at least, assuming parliament went by the letter of the law and they and the people didn’t decide to stage a little revolt.

Still using the wrong title I see. How can you be taken seriously when you cannot get basic facts correct?
Now I will spell it out simply for you...
THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND HAS NO POWERS AS SHE DOES NOT EXIST. THE 1707 ACTS OF UNION ABOLISHED THE ENGLISH MONARCHY.
Please answer this question... Which of these are you? Just someone who is a bit slow to learn, a troll who has set out to antagonise the UK citizens of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, or an ignorant and arrogant little Englander?

    • @Aidankiwi
      @Aidankiwi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Correct in principle Karl, but the last Queen of England was not Elizabeth Tudor (who died in 1603 not the mid 17th century) rather it was Queen Anne. She was simultaneously Queen of England and Queen of Scotland from 1702 to 1707. From then on she was Queen of Great Britain. Between 1603 and 1707 the crowns were separate but held by the same person. For example Queen Elizabeth's successor was referred to as James VI of Scotland and I of England.

To quote Richard Dimbleby, from longer ago than I care to remember: "The importance of the Queen is not in the power she has but the fact that by holding those powers she denies them to others". It is widely rumored that Magaret Thatcher wanted to declare war on Argentina when they invaded the Falklands but the Queen refused. So, forcing Thatcher to send an expeditionary force to relieve the islands. If it had been up to Thatcher, the army would have invaded Argentina.

No Parliament is. The Sovereign reigns at the invitation of Parliament. Parliament literally gave them more power than themselves for a very simple reason. That way you could blame the monarch for any issues arising in your government. Unfortunately for parliament, the Monarchs after Queen Anne really weren’t interested in governing significantly, that’s how the office of PM came into being. It was due to the refusal of George the First to actually legislatively govern and deposing him over not doing anything wasn’t possible because he did participate in some functions of Government. The government of the UK fell into place with the lessons of history. It wasn’t some contrived untested theory on how a nation can run.
While there are a lot of potential “Powers” the King could use, it just wouldn’t make sense unless you had an absolutely deranged or infiltrated parliament. Plus if misused to a high enough degree, the public would demand they be restrained. A healthy Constitutional Monarchy is a very boring but stable State Apparatus.

It sounds like her role is basically as a failsafe. If the government spirals completely out of control and the people are about to stage a revolution... she'll take action against the government on their behalf to preserve the country. As for her advisory role, it makes sense too - unlike most politicians whose terms are limited, she has an incentive to care about UK's very long term stability. That's the value of her perspective. I do find it scary how much theoretical power she has, but as the video made clear - if she just started using it, she'd lose it. The only way she can use all that power is if the people are completely behind her, which would be the sign of a real crisis.

Richard Forester she isn't even vaguely close to all powerful. The history of political power in England is partially a long struggle between the monarch and Parliament ever since King John and the Magna Carta. Despite some ups and downs the flow of power is quite obviously been from the monarch to Parliament because Parliament has the ultimate trump card money. The English and later British people can't be taxed without their consent and only Parliament can give it. No surprise English colonists would want representation with their taxation.
Several monarchs have dissolved Parliament and tried to rule themselves but have ended up having to recall it when they needed money. Controlling the Armed Forces is less impressive if you can't pay for them.
Not to mention just because something is theoretically possible doesn't mean anyone would obeying orders if a monarch started giving them. Attempting to use most of these powers would probably result in losing them.

The idea being that kids whose names end with W, X, Y or Z shouldn't always be thinking they are "last." But I never heard back and she never adopted this idea. So now I'm bringing this idea to a TH-cam comment thread, where I probably won't even get one thumb's up vote. This is exactly the kind of thing that would help make the Queen very popular, so I'm surprised she never did this. Probably her advisers thought it was a joke. But I'm serious.

According to Kevin Cahill, in his book "Who Owns the Word", the Queen is the largest landowner in the world with 6.6 BILLION acres of land. The nearest landowner to her is the Russian state at 4.4 billion acres. She owns all of the UK, Canada, and other commonwealth countries.
I always wondered why in Canada, naval vessels are called "HMCS and ship's name" standing for Her Majesty's Canadian ship. Our prosecutors in criminal courts are called the Crown. Our equivalent to the FBI is the RCMP - Royal Canadian Mounted Police. If a lawyer practices for so many years with no blemishes on his record, he receives his Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) designation. Our Prime Ministers are sworn in pledging allegiance to the Queen and not to the Canadian Constitution. They also pledge to keep her secrets. She has a representative in each province (Lieutenant Governors) who report to the Governor General, who reports directly to the Queen.
Her picture is above the blackboard in all classrooms. We still sing "God Save the Queen".
The BRF often visit Canada. I guess they're coming to check on their property like any land owner would. So there is far more to the BRF than we are told and that meets the eye.

They do quite a decent job and the Parliamentary -Confederation system here works fairly well most of the time. If she got out of hand like Emperor Trump to our south, we'd likely quickly have a referendum and have a President to take the ceremonial role of our Monarch, i.e. a bit like the German / French system. I think it is Pepys diary where there is mention of the fact that during the reign of Charles II the Westminster palace complex - actually a town of royal buildings - actually paid property taxes to the City of Westminster. London is actually two cities side by side. The city of London more or less centered around St. Paul's cathedral, and the City of Westminster with Hyde Park more or less at its center.
Both cities are so much larger now and have absorbed what used to be separate towns: Kensal Green, Notting Hill, Bethnal Green, Golder's Green, Chelsea, and many others. NYC and Los Angeles both have similar histories of absorbing surrounding towns that still retain their names .
Only one building from the Old Westminster Palace still exists: Inigo Jones Banquet Hall built during the reign of Charles 1. It is actually one small part of a much larger Versailles like palace that was never completed. That small segment was so expensive it was one of the reasons Charles ! was beheaded. England in Charles' I day had a much smaller population than France during the reign of Louis XIV. Charles I had very expensive tastes but Parliamen6t controlled and still controls the government budget.

Yes, she is kind of passive Monarch. The power exists in law, and she could be more active (like her son Charles is) but she always takes this relaxed, advisory role and doesn't interfere or get directly involved in politics. She is really a perfect model of a Constitutional Monarch performing all these endless duties and an astonishing amount of charity work alongside her regular official duties and she never complains... even when the gov took the Royal Yacht Britannia away and slashed the Royal budget 10 fold down to just £30 odd million a year and refused to pay for renovations on Buckingham Palace even!
OK the Royal's are top of social class in UK but it shows they have the same budget constraints and challenges as ordinary folks, but just on a larger scale :-) Also they were born into this role and didn't ask for it ..it's a hard life really endless duties and very little reward just summer holiday's at their private Estate in Scotland. Some may say Buckingham Palace is akin to a gilded prison. It's not like the Queen and go shopping in the city, go on holiday, spend money or do any of the spontaneous things we commoners take for granted. Last time she tried to drive herself to a nearby village the police escorted quickly her back to Buckingham Palace!
That's why so many respect her and like her in the UK and around the world. She is a very stabilizing figure in the UK and very wise according to past Prime Ministers and world leaders.

She's not immune to violent revolution and dictatorship isn't looked upon kindly in the modern world. Sure, the reason she doesn't use her power is that she chooses not to, but there are reasons behind that choice too. As the old saying goes, no man rules alone.

Most of the powers here are what in the US are called executive powers, and here are called Prerogative powers. And they are exercised - some of them often, but by Her Government, not her. That is how the British constitution works - power shared between parliament and Her Majesty's Government, who are all accountable to parliament.
We must also remember that in the UK, precedent is everything. Since no monarch has exercised prerogative powers without the advice of elected government in centuries, it is *unthinkable* that it would ever happen again.

as an american...i can say too that even though many here would be loathe to admit it, QEII is our 'queen' as well.
after all, 'murica wouldn't exist without England and it's vile King (at the time). in no small way, we too are really just a colony of the mighty 'British Empire', and owe much of our successes and democratic ideals to the 'motherland' England. The majority of the founding fathers of this country were English or of english/european descent.
Proof of our interconnectedness: anybody who was old enough to have 'witnessed' Princess Diana's death 20 years ago on television, I'm sure can remember exactly where they were, and who they were with. It was the whole world that mourned...in a sense...as there are really scant few places on earth that hadn't been touched (or colonised) by England (UK). For better or for worse.
      God Save the Queen!

Of course, she is also the Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc. And most Canadians approve the monarch as our Head of State. She has been very careful to not interfere in the day-to-day operations of her parliaments throught the Commonwealth and I personally find it comforting that she COULD step in to some degree, albeit carefully, should a prime minister overstep his or her position.
