+Robert T Yeah, it can, but honestly most of us aren't that dedicated. We're just trying to shorten the huge list of sandwiches on the screen during a lunch or dinner rush. Actually, the off-center problem might be because of how we're trained to finish the sandwich by closing the box upside-down so the bottom falls onto the top.

The Filet-O-Fish is the only reason I will ever stop at McDonalds. When I worked there as a kid in the early 1970s they introduced a double Filet-O-Fish called the "Grand Mariner". Sadly, that trial sandwich didn't last. A few years later I was living in Germany when the first McDonalds opened in Munich. The Filet was offered there as the "Fisch Mac". You could order it with a beer!
The Double Filet is available in Shanghai - its awful. Burger King has also started selling Fish Burgers in Shanghai, they're even worse. In Hamburg, I don't think the Filet o' Fish was very popular as the people of Hamburg prefer their traditional, crunchy bread roll, Fischbrötchen: funny locals, these fish sandwiches are usually always served cold.
I've always wanted to order a "fish mac", a double fish patty made as a big mac with tartar sauce instead of mac sauce. I doubt any store would be able to figure out how to bill for it is all.
@@Oldbmwr100rs Sounds good! When I worked there we had to pay for any food we ate at a small discount - I think 20%. To save money (I was paid $1.75 per hour!) We made up our own discount sandwich designs. My favorite was a grilled cheese sandwich (made on an inside-out burger bun) with tartar sauce. I recollect it was 15 cents...
I love the Fillet O' Fishdude. My dad and my chick love it too. What's good about this sandwich is that since it's not ordered very often, they don't keep premade/heated patties on deck like regular beef patties, so when you get a FoF, you're getting a fresh one. Downside is, they only give you half a square of cheese.
Its true I worked at a McDonalds as a teenager and they make you break the slice of cheese in half for the filet o fish. Its kind of strange why they decided to do that.
They should rebrand it like how crab sticks became seafood sticks so they can use more general fish rather than being stuck using the more known ones which have shrinking stocks. It's a shame fish farming doesn't work with the majority of fish due to migration patterns.
@@Ushio01 I doubt if the pollock stocks are going to be threatened anytime soon. Plus, you can't get more generic than Filet-O-Fish. BTW, pollock is also what crab sticks are made of.
when I was working at McDonald's I'd get at least 20 orders for fillet of fish a shift... and during Lent on Fridays out was literally the most popular menu item so we'd have to dedicate half the fryers to it.
Skyler Garza In my area we have fish sandwiches in the 2 for 5 menu. When the Muslims and Indians come in, its a field day. We can't keep them, cooking 8 patties at a time!
The worst I ever had it was when we had to dedicate the whole fry set up for meat to fish and start using half the French fry fryer for the chicken products.... We had a fresh shipment of 10 boxes in that day and we ended the night with one bag...
Something that I noticed when I was young and working at a McDonald's was that the fillet o fish also sells more when it rains. My manager had told me about it but I didn't take her seriously but then I started paying attention and she was right. Whenever it rained the fish was definitely ordered more than when it was sunny. I don't pretend to know why this happens but it certainly does.
It's the british heritage in many americans, it rains and they want fish and chips. Source: I'm drunk and made it up, but it almost makes sense if you ignore a bunch of stuff
@@alexandercope4049 honestly? You're probably half right, if we really think about it. Where are good fish and chips restaurants mostly located? By the seaside. Where the water is. Since water is where the fish is and all. Rain is just falling water.
Actually, my family and I actually buy the fillet o fish simply because we like them. I actually was surprised to hear it was really unpopular for the first time in this video.
It's not unpopular at all. I don't know where this idiot got that bit of information but it's wrong. Maybe it's unpopular in whatever shithole country he lives in, but here in the USA it is it is a huge seller and also McDonalds has no problem getting the fish it needs in the quantities it needs. Not sure where this doof got his info but it's grossly inaccurate.
I hope they don't remove it, the fillet-o-fish is my favourite burger there. Been enjoying that sandwich since I was a kid. I will say that it did seem to taste better when I was younger, probably a different type of fish.
My step-mom had a ritual every Saturday when she and my Dad went grocery shopping. They would always stop at MD and she would get a Filet-0-Fish and a hot chocolate! Weird combo! My dad didn't like MD that much but would have a coffee and a pie.
Roger Rondeau It's my favorite as well. And a plus to it is that, while you may have to wait a few extra minutes for it to be made,it will be hot and fresh.
I eat about 5-6 a year but when I have one, it's the *only* thing that I want to eat. Oh yeah, and always double patties. I'm pretty sure our bodies have their own agendas.
The Filet-O-Fish has been one of my favorite sandwiches since the 70's, hell I'm not even religious but they taste like the Gods made them from Poseidon's personal fish stash.
@Not Tucker I eat all cuisines and flavors lol. My favorites are mostly asian inspired. We are eating local Red Angus Ribeye cooked on an infrared grill tomorrow that are the only steaks the Hershey Hotel serves. I only eat a McDonalds fish sandwich about once every 2 years for nostalgia purposes and they still are awesome!

I love the Filet-O-Fish! I always ask them to add lettuce... perfect! And yes, I'm a good old Catholic girl, so I've consumed quite a few of them on Fridays during Lent, especially when I worked there for a few years way back when.
Eastyy its nasty man. i would only eat it if i wanted sth for a change and i was REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hungry. No offense man but neither the texture nor the sauce is good imo.
That's why do what I do ahaha have a food with you that your gonna watch about and trust me you won't be disappointed cause tada! no more aw man I wish I have one right now
Having worked in one for years, I'll say that a freshly fried filet + a steamed-then-toasted bun + tartar/lettuce/tomato/cheese = better than almost anything on the menu.
I just tried the filet o fish yesterday, and I was suuuper excited. As a pescatarian, McDonald's doesn't have a menu friendly to my diet, but our group wanted McDonalds and I was sure there was nothing I could eat until someone suggested this, which I never knew existed. The bun is simple and pillow-y and the fish filet is perfect. It has a great sauce, but I asked for no cheese. I'll order one again soon and try it with lettuce and mac sauce!
Cole Warden Nah dude, salty fish and cheese with that sauce? I like buying 3 of these when super drunk. 1 right away, the other 2 go on the counter for next morning ^^
I actually work at a store in the Groen franchise. His grandson, Grant, is our store owner. It's always been kind of weird they bring up the whole, "first new item on the menu" thing. But I guess it's a staple of the national culture and all that jazz.
you wouldent if u saw how they were made lol! i worked in the fish plant when i was younger and i cant say exactly "mc donalds" exactly but cheap fish cakes and cheap fish sticks are NOT fish lol!!!
Really eh? I know in Hong Kong they have it on the menu but when I went to Indonesia it was NO WHERE to be found! Actually same in Toronto though, I've seen locations (back in the early 2000s) that didn't serve it but you could generally find it pretty easily at other nearby locations.
I always called it fellatio fish, which went over their heads until I encountered one young woman who hardly stop laughing long enough to complete the order, but McDonald's is getting stupid expensive. It's not much cheaper than a diner meal anymore.
Zavier Moffit I have one every few years or so, I like the cheese on them but I order them without the tarter sauce. I live in New Mexico and have found that they're quite good if you add a little green chilé to them for a touch of local spice.
Eren Jaeger If you like fish and tartar sauce then you should try it. The buns have a very soft and fluffy texture. I think Filet-O-Fish is the first item from McDonald that I've tried when I was a kid and I love it ever since. That, and because I like to eat fish. This sandwich is actually quite popular in my country.
Yeah other places try to make fish sandwiches to compete and they just fucking don’t my favorite thing order extra tartar sauce and use the fries on the extra tartar sauce
3 years later.... It's actually the best thing on the menu. It's the only thing they always make when someone orders it. Everything else sits in trays and, depending on the store, could be very fresh or not. In most stores though, the Filet-O-Fish is always cooked when ordered because it's not ordered often.
I don't eat the Filet for religious reasons. I simply get it because, for me, its the best thing on the menu! The fish itself is pretty bland but the steamed bun and the tartar sauce (oh dear god the sauce) creates a fantastic combination that is like heaven for my palate.
That's why i start eat Filet-o-Fish, and I love it to this day (in the 90s, and early 2000 it was called FishMac, at least here in Europe). We ware traveling on the friday, and stoping at McDonald whole family order fish sandwich, as we are catholics.
OK. the Felt o fish has always been my favorite since I was a kid. I was born in 62. I've eaten a lot of them. I have to say the fish has gotten bland over the years. I believe it the tarter sauce that keeps me coming back. I think I'll go to a McDonald's after my work.out and get the 2 for 5. My grandmother was friends with the Crocks when I was young. Got to meet him several times at dinner parties.
First let me say I love the taste of fish .. I believe 90% of people don't .. that's why they will eat filet 0 Fish sandwiches at McDonalds .. maybe it's the tarter sauce their after
Morgan Boucher depends where you are at. Here in Southern California where people are more health conscious, the fish is far more popular. The result of this is them having to be made freshly throughout the day which means they taste better.
as a muslim this is a life saver because it’s literally the one thing we can order that is halal (assuming it’s actually made in separate oil like they say) edit: only burger/ sandwich*
@@Shinigami13133 its usually a beef/pork mixture. Beef is halal as you can eat beef bacon (I believe, new Muslim here. As-salaam 'alykum brothers.). Usually sausage/beef from cheap sources is mixed with pork and other haram meats.
Catholics don't eat red meat on Friday, so it's mostly fish for them. That is why it was made, and being a North American company, they tailored their menu to their primary consumers.
It’s my favorite, but they’re expensive for their small size. When they had the two for $5 I would eat it all the time. I hope they don’t get rid of it.
not where i live .... i was used to get the "cheapo big mac" (Cheeseburger with the Big Mac sauce) across the lands where i was.. and when i asked about this at my McD few meters from my current home, they were like "ummm huh.. whoa... cant be done" ... went to Bk instead :-)
Low sales by McDonald's standards can still mean a fuck ton. And they also can't just store the prepared fish indefinitely, so what's not sold in time needs to be thrown out and replaced
@@kfstreich4787 In the US alone McDonalds sells more than 820m lbs (400m kg) of beef each year. The filet o fish is 2.9oz (82g) including the breading. They sell some 200m sandwiches each year, which is about 36m lbs (16.5m kg). Compared to 820 million pounds of beef, 36 million pounds of fish is very little. Like imagine if you weighed 820lbs or kilos and your wife/husband weighed 36lbs or kilos. REALLY big difference. But still, 36 million pounds of fish is a LOT of fish.
The filet-o-fish has always been my favorite at McDonald's. I've tried the fish sandwich elsewhere, but I think McDonald's is the best. Now, that might be bc I've had so many. Very interesting program.
agreed, its real fish, you can just tell, as processed fish never has the same texture as real fish (processed fish more like solid cat food pureè) plus the potatoes are real fries and the sourcing is usually local and actually stimulates the local economy
I like it.. the sandwich and usually always taste the same, but it weirds me out ever since an adult... what fish is it? some like burger king expresses catch of the day.... OK this could be your pet gold fish you put in my sandwich.
and I don't mean to spoil your appetite but most cheap fish comes from fish farms they do not clean the water often and is filled with crap. there's plenty of videos showing it. and well all fish in northern hemisphere is poisoned be it fuckashima oil spills illegal toxic dumps .. Cali dumps trash 5 miles off shore. chemtrail... nothing is proven safe to eat including ponds and rivers etc... pesticides everywhere. right I know all food is toxic but fish is highest on chain. even China of all places rejected our fish last year and here they are a killing spree to America with their products.
That is my favorite sandwich at McDonalds. I just ate one yesterday. There is a worker that calls me the cheese lady because i ask for the whole piece. I live in Utah, and recently found out if you order one filet-of-fish, they throw the other half of cheese away. I tell them to put it on mine instead of tossing it. THEY DO. I think it is stupid that they toss it instead of putting on customers sandwich. Help me out all of you Filet-of-Fish eaters wherever you are. Tell them you want the other half of the cheese, because they toss it anyway. Let's start a revolt.
I can just imagine walking into a really busy McDonald's, going up to the counter, banging my fist on it, turning up my hat, and saying, "Get me a Filet-o-Fish," and everyone turning around with a massive gasp like I'm in some sort of Western.
Going back 30 years when I worked at McDonald's it was the only item cooked to order (except in busy times when 6 were kept in the "bin") and took 4 minutes 20 seconds to cook if I remember correctly. Nicest thing on the menu tbh in that was just totally different to everything else on the menu.
I work at McDonald's, and the fish are the second most likely item to be served to you super old. First is spicy mcchicken. My recommendation is to order both of these cook to order if you want them, they take 3:30 in the fryer so it doesn't add too much time and will taste a thousand times better trust. Especially the spicy, that will literally sit for 2 hours and never gets thrown out.
Actually thats not how it works, and Thrasher209 yes it is indeed a good thing when inflation slowly increases, consumer confidence rises, therefore increasing spending and in turn GDP. So, a steady, low inflation rate helps the economy.
This was the first job I had in high school. At that time (1974) they were made with half a slice of cheese. The best thing about the sandwich, in my opinion, is the tartar sauce. It’s great on fries.
flack youe I don't see how price matters. It may affect sales, but I think the main point they are trying to argue is their popularity compared to the burgers.
Great video! I really enjoyed this dig back into such a niche area of history - the creation of a sandwich that really doesn’t seem particularly historically significant by most standards). But these are good little sandwiches that I’ve always really enjoyed. The steamed bread, the cheese, the tartar sauce… it all works together. And yes, as a Catholic, I’ve been a big part of helping those Lent sales! As a matter of fact, probably 75% of these that I’ve eaten over the years have been during Lent.
My dad used to take me to McDonald's in the 60s and only ordered FOF. We were Catholic, but I never heard of that connection. I guess it was because my mom was Italian and shunned all fast American food, so we never had FF dinners.
I used to eat and really enjoy the fillet-o-fish despite never ordering one personally. It was always something my grandma would buy for me when she bought dinner for herself.
As a previous McDonald’s employee in my early 20s, the filet o fish is made fresh to order. Bun is steamed fresh. Probably the “best” thing you could order. Try throwing lettuce and tomato on it. Pretty good.
In Japan the Filet O'Fish is on the breakfast menu. There was also a week when they were selling it for half price. And last year a double filet o'fish was on the menu. I never much ate them in America, but here in Japan I do.
TheHobgoblyn huh, that's pretty cool. I always thought the idea of "breakfast foods" was silly. if I want something spicy or heavy for breakfast, I'm going to have that. if I want cereal or eggs later in the day, I'm going to have that
I hate the breakfast menu from McDonald. If i want a croissant, i go to the baker where i can buy me a buch of baked goods and coffee for the half price and it's taste even better.
Well, first Tony-- you are obviously wrong about no one caring. If you didn't live in a sewage hole under a rock and living off shit, you'd realize quite a lot of people care. Second, Tony, you are wrong about Japanese ever wanting "all Americans" dead. They just wanted to take over control of Hawaii because tons of Japanese people had already moved there and live there to this day. They also bombed the fleet at Pearl Harbor because it was a fleet that was built up to attack them any day. You know that whole "preeminent strike" thing that was the excuse for America to attack Iraq? Yep. That was the reason the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Except there actually WERE WMDs poised to attack them. It had nothing to do with the extermination of all Americans. They actually liked Americans at the time and wouldn't have had all their warships and planes had it not been for the Americans. But-- again-- I guess that is the education one gets from being a hole-dwelling sewage creature.
I've worked in McDonald's in the UK and the reason why the filet is so popular is because majority (not all) of people who buy a Filet are muslims and they are really popular because McDonald's doesn't serve halal food.
With all the fish & chips shops in the UK, I have to wonder why they go to a McDonalds for their fish. Aren't there like a million other places to get fried fish, probably more different kinds of fish and better quality? In the US I can understand going to McDonalds because there aren't as many fish & chips places.
lestrange I'm guessing because it's the easiest and fastest thing to do and there being so many of them with drive throughs as well. People are shopping in the area, and a McDonald's is around the corner and people know what they're getting at McDonald's as well, instead of chip shops as they're all different (prices, taste, quality)
it's a convienece kinda thing. Theres plenty of mcdonalds at service stations which are great while taking a break from driving. Sometimes when were out and about we just go to mcdonalds instead of searching for a different place to go. Infact I had one today since it was literally just across the vets I visited.
Back in the 1970's , Burger King had a fish sandwich called The Whaler. It was huge, twice the size of the McDonald's fish sandwich and I ate my fair share of them, too..!! Today, the Whaler is just a shrimp....so sad. Burger King also used to have a real good hot ham & cheese and was a real good portion. Oh, I long for the old days...!!
Burger King has always had a fish sandwich, as far as I know. I remember it being pretty damned big and quite good, but it's not much more than a Filet-o-Fish with a bigger bun these days.

Korean McDonald's stopped selling the filet-o-fish a few years back...it's absolute bullsh*t. Best item on the menu...gone.
Minus cheese , for me , but dead on point otherwise 👌
Its true I worked at a McDonalds as a teenager and they make you break the slice of cheese in half for the filet o fish. Its kind of strange why they decided to do that.
For the McDonald's near me it's the opposite lol the fish is never fresh unless you ask for it fresh
Fillet-o-fish is one of the best things on their menu only issue is its kinda pricey

Misspelling it with 2 Ls is probably why people mispronounce out. Filet is pronounced fi-LAY.

when I was working at McDonald's I'd get at least 20 orders for fillet of fish a shift... and during Lent on Fridays out was literally the most popular menu item so we'd have to dedicate half the fryers to it.
Skyler Garza When Filet O Fish is on sale , like two for one price , they sell at least 20 every half hour during the lunch or dinner rush.
Yeah I remember that too
Skyler Garza In my area we have fish sandwiches in the 2 for 5 menu.
I hate McDonald's now there fish I will eat I miss the California shop I went too privately owned and used fish from the dock.
Something that I noticed when I was young and working at a McDonald's was that the fillet o fish also sells more when it rains. My manager had told me about it but I didn't take her seriously but then I started paying attention and she was right. Whenever it rained the fish was definitely ordered more than when it was sunny. I don't pretend to know why this happens but it certainly does.
this is a very interesting phenomenon. I think it also somewhat relates to people preferring to eat salad in the summer when it's warm.
It's the british heritage in many americans, it rains and they want fish and chips.

I used to eat and really enjoy the fillet-o-fish despite never ordering one personally. It was always something my grandma would buy for me when she bought dinner for herself.
Good Friday, 1962: Ray Kroc inadvertently stumbles across the catchphrase "where's the beef?" only to be stung by it yet again by Wendy's in 1984.
TheHobgoblyn Sounds nice. I've had to not eat anything good because of that damn breakfast menu a few times. Just serve the same stuff at all times!
TheHobgoblyn what the f*** is that have to do with the price of tea in China?wtf.
I'm not a huge fan of the Filet-O-Fish but now I want one after watching this video. I know what I'm having for lunch today.
Meh, if I want fried fast food fish I'll got to Long John Silver's.
I don’t know why I enjoy these videos so much. I have never had one but think I will get one tomorrow for research purposes.
Same, just finished mine, pretty good, if a bit small!
Filet-o-fish is the only item on the mcd menu that my grandpa orders
Same here
I stopped eating McDonald's a long time ago. But this made me incredibly hungry
i havent eaten for years now
I've worked in McDonald's in the UK and the reason why the filet is so popular is because majority (not all) of people who buy a Filet are muslims and they are really popular because McDonald's doesn't serve halal food.
+James Murray Also I'm guessing they're cheaper and most immigrants are not rich and trying to save money.

it's a convienece kinda thing.

I remember it being pretty damned big and quite good, but it's not much more than a Filet-o-Fish with a bigger bun these days.
love mcD's fish sammie. always hated the whaler b/c waaaaaay too much bun for the size of the fish.
The yumbo. That was the ham sandwhich.
The Whaler was nothing short of AWESOME....but so was the Whopper...AT THAT TIME ! Now...FUGGITABOUTIT !
marbleman52 thank you. He pissed me off with the weird pronunciation in the first 30 seconds lol
I eat them, they're delicious. Try getting one with mac sauce instead of tartar. Winning 👍
Mac Sauce and, if you like them, add pickles. Also, in my case, I prefer white cheddar instead of yellow.
My mind is now blown. I shall try it tomorrow.
Donovan Graciano, how was it?
fileofish with Mac sauce + sliced pickles + bacon + tomato, award winning
@@davidjiang1437 no mac donald cheese, but add pamiggiano after and a dash of lemon.
