Looking at the video with great interest as it seems to solve my problems editing 5,7K 360-degrees videos - however - I don't have all the presets (Apple ProRes) available for my proxy files... perhaps you could make a video or explain how I get those too ?
Hmm I’m not sure exactly how you would go about that for 360 videos and I didn’t have to do anything to get them, they were just there with the software so I’m not sure why yours would be missing. You might have to do some googling!
@@dunnadidit I found them when I made my own custom ingest/export. However - for 360 video - the format of the proxy needs to be different - clearly a 720/1280 is not working - as the "sphere" of video is not easy to work with.
I just tried this out, did everything right, and all my footage is still choppy, guess I'll have to play with the prores and proxies to see what the deal is.

You can click the toggle proxies button again if you want to view the full res files with all your edits and effects. However, when you export your timeline, it will automatically use the original files for that process so your final export is full res
Man, this was excellent and beyond helpful. Showing the best way to do something in the most simple, clear, and easy-to-follow away. I have no idea how the hell I'd be making videos if I wasn't constantly fed a steady stream of well-made youtube tutorials on here by people like you 😂
If you color correct while using proxies, you might find you get more artifacts and stuff but I would at least check/finish color grade with the full res files anyway.
I’m thinking about switching from Final Cut to Premiere and I heard about Proxies. I have a couple questions you may be able to help me answer. First, if I create the proxy files, like you show, can I send those proxy files to an editor to edit? Once they’re done can I reconnect those proxy files to my 4K clips and the edits be carried over? Second, after the editing is done on the proxy files is it easy to export the finished 4K video? My goal is to record the videos myself, and hire a video editor to do most of the editing process. We’ll have to share these files on Dropbox so proxy files could make that a lot easier. But since I’m new to this, I don’t know if this will work. Thank you for any advice you can share. 😁
Just customization. And h.264 is harder for your computer to read. That’s why I suggest prores proxy. It’s easier on the computer, hence why I use it to speed up editing! Using a smaller h.264 file would be similar to just turning down the playback quality.
An export preset only works for exporting from a timeline. An ingest preset works for transcoding or making proxies. Unfortunately, the only way I know how to make an ingest preset is to create an export preset first and then use that to create the ingest preset afterwards. It’s a bit of a process but it works in the end. If you tried to make proxies using an export preset it wouldn’t work 🤷🏻♂️
@@dunnadidit Oh, now I see it! With the Ingest I can make proxies right from the Explorer, without the need to create a project, right? It can be quite useful. Thanks a lot, man!

I love the idea of using Proxy, but I am a little confused if I understand that the proxy used to compress all your original footage and does it reduce the quality of the video when exporting at the end? or how can I go back to the original footage after using the proxy?
Proxy files are only used during the editing process to make it easier on your computer to edit. When you go to export, the full size files will be used to create your final render.

Hey, thanks for the great tutorial. One question: I can't preview the files before importing them. If I change the names in premiere (scene, take, etc) will they automatically relink using metadata or would I have to revert them to the original filenames before attaching the proxies?
You can, it might not be advisable though since the proxy file might kinda fall apart easier. I definitely have though and it will at least get you close.
Hmmm, either the overlay isn’t being added correctly or the proxies aren’t attaching properly. Can you find the proxy files on your computer and confirm that they do have the overlay on them outside of premiere?
Dunna Did It its all good now. Thank you so much for this tutorials. Now I can start on a self project. Looking forward to your next tutorials. keep it up!
Thank you so much for this. Other videos were just too lengthy and made it seem dreadful. This was so easy, thanks for saving us time and going straight to the point.
so ho exactly do you use them? do you flick back and forth to insert the edit points in the full sized clips? and use the proxies for playback and scrolling?
Turn them on and do your entire edit with them on. Then when you export, it uses the main files instead of the proxies to make the export. The only time I switch back to the main files is for color grading.
I followed this to the letter and it's the perfect guide! I noticed that creating my own 720p proxy ingest preset made the creation of the proxy a lot faster than using one of the built-in presets, that also don't have the "PROXY" effect overlay. Cheers Dunna! EDIT: I thought it was too good to be true... now it's cutting out huge chunks of audio on the proxy version in Premiere - making editing it impossible since editing when there's talking is all part of my editing. Back to just struggling along with the original file, sigh. This cutting of audio happens when I export too but I always export a WAV and drag it back into Premiere, that fixes it... I can't do that with the proxy version since exporting exports the original file. Plergh!
Thanks for the tip! I'm currently using Final Cut Pro but I also wanna learn Premiere so when it comes to making proxies, FCP's way is much easier than PP. But then again, I will try what you did on this vid and with that, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.Really helpful.
Great vid, just what I was looking for. You just earned a new subscriber. Do you reccommend using proxies as opposed to, say, just transcoding your original files from h.264 to Apple ProRes and editing with those? (and exporting again at h.246)
Do you still use proxies in 2020 man? Also, can we do this for any 4K clips? For example my drone footages and or camera videos? Or should we just turn on proxy recording for my Sony camera and just create proxies for my drone footages so there isn’t much encoding?
Proxies FTW! One thing I do that others might find helpful is create proxies with a squareish aspect ration (like the 1024 one) Once you're working in a 16:9 timeline (1920 * 1080) for example, the proxy footage (once you click the proxy button) will have black bars on the left and the right. Those black bars are a great reminder that proxies are actually on and more so a huge reminder to turn them off when needs be ;)

You are the man, thank you so much I've been stuch with premiere trying to make my own proxy for hours, your method is perfect! Thank you so much!
That’s great to hear!
I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. Perfect tutorial.
Dunna a question do you color correct and grade on the proxy file?
You can, it might not be advisable though since the proxy file might kinda fall apart easier. I definitely have though and it will at least get you close.
Finally the video I needed! But I have one question: Is the Quicktime option only valid for Mac users? Or is it better for Premiere in general?
The quicktime option is just what I prefer but you can use cineform or DNxHD as well.
Thank you for your quick reply! I will test it right away ✌️ I just upgraded to 48GB of RAM, hoping that I will finally get rid of the lag.
Thanks for this. Ive actually followed every step however when I click on the toggle the prefix overlay doesnt show up. Any possible fix for this?
Hmmm, either the overlay isn’t being added correctly or the proxies aren’t attaching properly. Can you find the proxy files on your computer and confirm that they do have the overlay on them outside of premiere?
Dunna Did It its all good now. Thank you so much for this tutorials. Now I can start on a self project. Looking forward to your next tutorials. keep it up!
Great to hear it! Cheers!
I come to 5:58 and under Transcode files to Destination-Presets, I don't see the file I just crated.
My pleasure!!
It was really fun fast and simple, nice video keep hustle
Great vid, just what I was looking for. You just earned a new subscriber. Do you reccommend using proxies as opposed to, say, just transcoding your original files from h.264 to Apple ProRes and editing with those? (and exporting again at h.246)
This was the Best class by far about proxies 👍🏻 Thank you so much
Yay! Thanks for watching!
Do you still use proxies in 2020 man? Also, can we do this for any 4K clips? For example my drone footages and or camera videos? Or should we just turn on proxy recording for my Sony camera and just create proxies for my drone footages so there isn’t much encoding?
Which laptop you using for the edit which u doing in the video sir
2017 MacBook pro
do you have an after effects proxy tutorial?
Proxies FTW! One thing I do that others might find helpful is create proxies with a squareish aspect ration (like the 1024 one) Once you're working in a 16:9 timeline (1920 * 1080) for example, the proxy footage (once you click the proxy button) will have black bars on the left and the right. Those black bars are a great reminder that proxies are actually on and more so a huge reminder to turn them off when needs be ;)
I used to use the 540 one for that reason too! Then I found out I could add the title and I switched over but either works!
@@dunnadidit Awesome! Thanks for the reply dude! It's late here in Ireland, but how'd you mean add the title?
Vic Barry - I explained it in the video. I added the little title that says proxies.
Dunna Did It 😞 sorry dude. Of course you did. It was way too late here. I was half asleep. Doh.
omg i have a slow computer and this helps sooooo much. Thank you so much dunna this is incredible and so easy.
Great to hear!
Can you create proxies after you’ve already edited most of the video ? Would you have to re-edit it from scratch?
No you should be able to no problem.
Is there a way to do all this using hitfilm express? The free version… :/
